Phillies Fall Short as Yankees win World Series

Remember.
Remember the chilly April, the awesome May, the blistering July, and the September that sealed it up. Remember the death of a legend. Remember the thrilling comebacks, the five all-stars, and a third straight division crown. Remember the late night’s against the Rockies, the “Beat LA” chants, and everything in between.
Remember it all; store it away for the long, cold winter, because this year was a success no matter how you look at it.
The Philadelphia Phillies lost this game 7-3, and in the process relinquished their spot at the top. However, they never stopped fighting. From minute one of the 2009 season, this team has fought until it could no longer fight, and in this case, the final fight came in Game 6 of the World Series.
For the 27th time in their history, the New York Yankees took home the title, with Hideki Matsui taking the World Series MVP. It was a hell of a series, and a hell of a season for the Yankees who finished with 114 wins combining the regular season and playoffs. Phillies Nation congratulates them on fine season.
As for the Phillies, there will certainly be questions abound as to how things will change in the offseason. The core of this team is intact for yet another run, so while this loss stings, they have the make up to do it one more time.
A wise man once said, “all good things come to an end.” It’s an amazing feat that the Phillies made it back to the World Series a year after winning the whole thing. Next year, this team will regroup and give it everything they have to try and get to yet another World Series.
To sum up this season, it’s hard to complain about what this club was able to accomplish. Overall, 102 wins is nothing to shake a stick at, so cherish all of the great moments this 2009 Phillies team gave us.
The Phillies will be back next season, and with them will come the same tenacity, passion, and energy they brought for all of 2009. High hopes, everyone.
See you boys next year. And to Phillies Nation, always remember.

Pitching…..Need Pitching: 3 starters, and a closer in the off season. To tell the truth, it was amazing how far they got with the pitching they had.

It was a great year and we have a lot of questions and work to do in the offseason. But this team isn’t done…its only beginning. Congrats to the yankees, we’ll meet again.
What I didn’t like was that everyone from Selig to every yankee interviewed, not one of them congratulated the Phillies on a great series. This is why I hate the yankees.

It was a great season- can’t wait for the hot stove league. Funny- but the Phillies might be looking at a $250M off season of their own.
1. Gotta extend Lee,
2. They need a seond big rotation option (particularly with Hamels not a lock to win 14 and the Yankees winning this series based on three quality starters to one)
3. They need a right handed bat to go with the lefty bias they have- particularly as Ibanez will need to be spelled more and more
4. can’t have enough relief pitching.
Great job though. Enjoyed following it on PhilliesNation

@Manny, cheer up boy. You know what they say. Some things in life are bad. They can really make you made, other things just make you swear and curse. When you’re chewing on life’s gristle, don’t grumble, give a whistle, and this will help things turn out for the best….

Ah, this hurts. It really does. But honestly, despite the fact that our season didn’t end in a parade, we still all had a great freaking time – at least I know I did. This team really brought our city together; whether it was to watch Ryan Howard blast another home run or to cringe as Brad Lidge blew another game, we all came together and had one hell of a ride.
I feel absolutely terrible about tonight, but things will get better. This spring.
In the meantime, I will continue to love this team with all of my heart.

Nicely written, Pat. I will never forget this team or this season..it’s been a lot of fun. And I think we should all sit back and take a second to appreciate the incredible run this team is on. Never before in franchise history has there been such a string of success. We can only hope that they’re on the road to building a winning tradition here. I envision a franchise where we’re no longer surprised by excellence, but we expect it. A place where players want to come and play, because they know that year in and year out they have a chance to compete for a world championship. Nothing breeds success like previous success, and let’s just hope that these past two seasons put us on the path to being one of the marquee teams in all of baseball, right up there with the Yankees, Red Sox and Dodgers.

Here is my facebook status. Sums up my feelings.
Hard to be upset with a team that has won the last 2 NL pennants and the world series last year. The Yankees are simply a better team because Hamels and Lidge are both terrible now. The phils will be back next year. 2 out of 3 isnt bad.

You guys are class acts. The Phils had a tremendous year, and the front office demonstrated its smarts in bringing in both Lee and (despite a couple mistakes tonight) Martinez. This team is likely to only improve, as its core of talent is in its prime at the plate and getting better in the field. Phillies fans should be looking at a team that will contend for another few years, at least.

We didn’t win either so we have no say in laughing at the Phillies and their fans.Oh and Georgie REMEMBER only 98 more days til Pitchers and catchers.

I told my Phillies guy this very thing in an email tonight. My team beat the best team in baseball tonight. The Phillies are a long term keeper who have moved themselves into October conversations for years to come.
My team had the Phils down by four runs with the indomitable Rivera in to shut it down, and I was absolutely crapping my pants off my legs until Cano settled that grounder into Tex’s glove.
I would never admit this to my son, but I didn’t think we’d beat you guys. You’re that good. Better even.
Congratulations on a great year guys.
I miss baseball already.

Well, it was a great run.
I’m disappointed the Phils didn’t repeat. But this doesn’t sting as much as past Philly teams that have fallen short.
One reason is because we won it last year. Another is because we proved — by returning to the series — that last year wasn’t a fluke. And because I know this team will be title contenders for at least another two years.
Congrats to the Yankees. Hate to see them win it, but they have a great team and they earned it by beating the defending champs.
Phils just weren’t as fortunate this year. Bullpen problems did them in. If we had the Lidge of last year, we probably win this series.
Anyway, I’m so proud of this team. It’s been a fabulous two years.
And there’s more great times yet to come.

@Morris, you know, that makes a lot of sense and actually explains a lot. I’m half, myself, I know a lot of Irish people. It is very difficult for me to adopt a Tracey-like mindset; I can tend to be negative as hell. What was it that Matt Damon said in the Departed? Something like “I’m Irish. I’ll deal with something being wrong with me for the rest of my life.”

This is the email my best friend left for me after the game. He is a die hard Mets fan. He did not care either way. Read below.
What a pathetic performance by the Phillies tonight. Why did they bother to drive down the turnpike. NOt even close, Pedro stunk and they couldn’t score any runs. A good team finds a way to beat Rivera. How many scoreless innings did he pitch this series and how old is he now, 50. Without Lee you guys would have been swept. Not impressed.

I don’t post very often but I do come to the site and read the articles regularly, and I just want to say thanks to all those that run this site for another fantastic season. Its been a pleasure to read them and occasionally banter with a few of you guys from time to time. Finally, I want to say while I am disappointed, if someone was to tell me 14 months ago that the Phillies would win the World Series, then win the Pennant the following season, I’d have taken it in a heartbeat. Thanks again guys, can’t wait till next season!

I simply agree. Howard and Rollins were horrible. Jimmy should just shut his mouth for once. Victorino and Ibanez I am still looking for them. We had no pitching except for Lee. Manuel got out managed by a nobody. We need a bullpen, a bench and a couple more starters. Hamels has no heart and he showed it. Granted the Yankees have some clutch hitters but we were the better team. We let a 40 year old guy go out and pitch in the biggest game of our lives. He wasnt even with us for most of the season. What a darn shame.

This was a great season and a lot of fun to watch even though we fell 2 wins short of the ultimate goal. Like others have said though, the Phillies have won 3 division titles, 2 pennants, and 1 World Series in the past 3 years. That’s pretty good! And you know what the best part is? This is only the beginning!
I can’t wait for next year! Keep your heads up. We’ve got high hopes! Next year is going to be great!

Its strange to be at this point now, since its been since the Rockies unceremoniously swept the Phillies in 2007 that we can say the season has ended on a loss. I’m usually a guy that has a hard time being positive when things go bad…I wonder what I have to do to make things right. Tonight though, I feel an odd sense of calm. I know this team gave it their all. They battled they scrapped, clawed and fought. In the end that is all I want from MY team. I am proud to be a Phillies fan and I am proud to finish second. There is no shame in that. One thing I’m sure of is that I NEVER want to be accused of being anything like a Yankee fan. Would I love to win every year? Sure, but i want to do it the right way and I want to identify and fall head over heels for MY team. I live in the NYC area and I was in a Philly bar where there happened to be two Yankee fans hanging out after they got their big lead. They poked and prodded and wanted nothing more than to antagonize. That is the kind of attitude that Philly fans have been branded with but have never earned. Walking down the streets I was heckled (and you thought you guys could hang – crooned some drunk fool). The thing is, the Phillies did hang and they did it with 70mil less on their payroll. All I ask of Yankee fans, when the dust settles, is to admit that without CC, AJ and Tex there is no way they win this thing. The rules are the rules and the Phillies play by them too but a Yanks fan that can’t admit that is a Yanks fan that has blinders on.
I want to thank everyone on this blog (contributors & commentors) for countless hours of thought provoking and entertaining banter and prose. I’m so proud to be a part of a fanbase such as ours and I can’t wait to spend the offseason gearing up for another run!

It didn’t come across in my previous post but I do want to congratulate the Yankees. All they can do is play with the team on the field and despite the obvious talent they still had to make the plays and beat a team that absolutely deserved to be there. I would have liked to see more humility from them and their fans but nonetheless they are now the World Champs. The target is now on their backs and we have the sights already set!

Congrats to the Philadelphia Phillies on back to back pennants and a world series title. No guarentee any of us will be back for next years world series. Have a drink. Think about the wins and the tough loses. Enjoy yourselves.

They need to find a new third basemen and get hamels to figure things out if he was half of who he was last year we’d won and get more help on the bench francisco is ther only good bat on the bench and get more help in the bullpen.

Chone Figgins would be nice at 3rd.
As for the bench, I’d only keep Dobbs & Francisco.

@Marco-Congrats on winning, and thanks for not being like a lot of other Yankee fans who have come to this site and a few others I read to just talk trash and be an overall dumb@ss.
Next year is our best shot, with our ages and the fact that it will likely be Lee’s last year as a Phillies…Lee, Hamels, Happ, Blanton, and Drabek? And so long, Pedro Feliz…I like his glove, but it’s not as good as advertised, and he has virtually no bat to speak of…
We have some needs we have to address for next year, but I’m gonna take a few days off without thinking about those things.

The original poster was a class act but many posts show the classless nature of Philly the city. The Yanks never once chanted Phillies suck and the illogical nonsense some phills fans live by.
We wouldnt win without CC? What does that actually mean? The only pitcher that could beat us was a gun for hire paid after you already had a 132 million dollar payroll–a team with the most losses in history.
Yanks dont buy success–they reaped the benefits of it. We had 8 guys from the farm on the field tonight–Phils had what? Our guys are overpaid and you actually had us beat at almost every position which proves that. Now you want MORE talent? What? You gonna spend as much as a franchise who won 40 pennants and has been in 1 out of every 2 WS? How do you justify spending any where near a team like that? You see, its just pathetic how illogical you are and how unwilling to accept that the Yanks are something special.
So the question is—who tried to buy success?

PS
Great season. Your team didnt lose cause it sucked. It just lost because it didnt execute. You had the players–as I said one scout rated only 1 yank position player over the Phills. You just as easily could have won. Your team really had no right trying to buy the WS. Get some success first to justify spending money because money doesnt buy the WS

John – as your comments are directed at mine I would like to respond. There is a very simple and easy answer here. What did the Yankees do last year? No playoffs. What did they do in the offseason? They signed the 3 most highly sought after and prized free agents on the market. They played well, executed and won a WS. All I’m saying is that those players are the difference. I also recognize that the Phillies spend money too, compared to most teams in baseball they send a lot. However, the Yankees are on another level. That is the way baseball is structured and that won’t change. However, until I hear a Yankee fan admit that money plays a major part in their success over the past few decades I will be unable to take them seriously. That is all I ask – a little honesty and humility.
If you want to do the math you might find that the % of free agents to homegrown guys is about the same between these two teams. The difference is that the Phillies (much like the Yankees of the late 90′s) built this team from within (Howard, Utley, Rollins, Hamels, Happ, Myers, Ruiz) and after it started winning they brought in complementary pieces to round out the team. Werth and Victorino were FA’s but they were not starters. The Phillies made them into those players.
I would love to have a civil and levelheaded argument on this subject in the future but right now I would hope that true Yankee fans would have something better to do and somewhere better to be than on a Phillies blog at 2:30 in the morning after they just won a World Series.

CZ – Indeed. The Yankees play the game right way and do the fundemental things they need to when the law averages isn’t on their side, that’s is the put themselves in a postition to improve their odds. I think we knew and I’m sure some of their more reasonable fans that for us to do this Hamels would have to somehow return to form or the offense would have to remain on the tear that it did to get to the play offs. Watching the BP pull itself out the ashes and the line-up have more strategic approaches at the plate definitely gave me hope that we could win, but it was clear by game two that Howard’s loopy swings at Burnett’s curve ball meant he was about to slump. Then the abysmal Hamels start and the bull pen collapse in game 4. Well even if we won tonight…who knows, but I doubt we could have won the next one. Unfortunately we faced off against the team we wanted but lacked all the pieces to win. Just bad timing that Lidge and Hamels had off years.

this series loss is such an alien feeling to me as a Philadelphia sports fan. To tell the truth, I’m not nearly as crushed as I feel like I probably should be. The pain from this isn’t anything close to that of the eagles championship game losses, or the sixers loss in the finals in 2001. or the flyers loss in the cup finals to the red wings way back when. probably because this phillies team actually captured the glory and gave us a real taste of it. not only that, but they defended their crown honorably . couple that thought with the fact that teams almost never repeat.

Congrats to the Yanks. Tough way to lose, we never were really in that last game.
To John…um yes, you did buy it, at the very least in part. Two thirds of your World Series rotation were purchased this offseason, not to mention your 1B stud you also went out and purchased. Who starts if you didn’t just go out and purchase the top two SPs on the market this offseason? Are Hughes and Joba in the rotation? But, just because you bought it doesn’t mean it was a less deserved win, or that you shouldn’t enjoy it. The win was a total team effort on the part of the pinstripes, clutch hits and timely pitching were all in abundance. Mo is great too….a major difference was Lidge vs. Rivera.
Pettitte is awesome, props to him for being nails this late in his career on three days rest.

Im glad most people on here are not acting like the Yankees Sore Winners. Congratulations to the Yankees. They are a great team, they are the best time money can buy. They wanted a Championship, took advantage of having damn near unlimited spending money and went to get the best players available. They played well, but the Phillies did NOT quit! They took it to game 6 for the first time in 5 some odd years. They are also the first NL team to go to back to back WS in over a decade. Not a bad feat. I am proud of this team for not quiting. Quiting would have been losing it in the 6th game in NY rather than Game 5 in Philly. Most of everyone figured the Phillies would roll over and die in game 5 because they were down 3-2, but they didnt. The team has some obvious needs. Hamels is a question mark, Happ hopefully will come back strong, Blanton was pretty consitent, Moyer will come back but a year older, after being injured, and really shouldnt be relied upon, Martinez is done I believe. Closer, Lidge sucked this season, Madson clearly was a not a Closer, bullpen should be ok, most of the BP problems were injuries, and yet through all the turmoil and bad press and injuries, they still made it back tot he WS. Im pleased overall. I would have much rather won, but can you really be pissed off with 2 straight NL pennants? I can’t. Disappointed of course, but this has been fun. All great things must come to an end, I just hope this wasnt the end. Depends on the off season moves as it pertains to pitching. Look at it this way, several teams in the last few years since they went to the WS (win or lose) didnt even make it back to the playoffs the following year, (Cardinals and Rays come to mind right away). Actually since the Cardinals won the WS, they havent been past the 1st round of the playoffs since. This is a great team, and I hope to get a 4th straight NL East first and foremost, but the Phillies have bullseye on their back with the Braves and Marlins really wanting to de-throne the Phillies. Lets hope this has another year or two left in them. I think they should, but its not a certainty.

Not like I really want to get dive deep into the buying the WS or not, but if you look at Sabathia, Pettite and Texiera, they are all great players, but non of them wanted to be on the East coast. Pettite wanted to re-join Joe Torre, Sabathia wanted to be in CA, I forget where Tex said he wanted to be, and Im not sure about Burnett. Had there been a salary cap, or the Yankees didnt throw ridiculous amounts of money at them, they wouldnt have been there. That had a HUGE part in winning. That is really borderline between fact and opion, and VERY FINE line. But fact is they still needed to execute. They did and the majority of the Phillies did not. I am a Phillies fan and like it or not, the better team did win sadly. I can admit it. Clearly better? I dont think clearly, but overall better. IMO not by much.

Stay classy, Yankees fans! Because shouting “Who’s your daddy” at a guy who never knew his father is ALL class, way way way above chanting “Yankees Suck”.
Most of the NY fans posting here are class acts, and thank you for the kind words. We got outplayed in all facets of the game except Chase Utley and Cliff Lee.
To guys like Bob and John – You’re the reason your team is the most despised team in baseball. Arrogant with a sense of entitlement, so much so that on the eve of victory you have to log in to a Phillies blog to talk smack. And then you have the nerve to say Philly fans are bad. Enjoy your hollow, empty, shallow lives. This win for the Yankees was for the classy fans, and I hope they enjoy it.

And to address the “buying” debate — Let’s play a game of Monopoly. You start with 1,500 dollars and I’ll start with $70,001,500. That’s fair, right? No inequality there. I mean, you can still win the game, after all.
