Gameday 2009, Posts, World Series 2009
Philadelphia Phillies (2-3) at
New York Yankees (3-2)
Pedro Martinez, RHP (0-1) vs. Andy Pettitte, LHP (1-0)
Time: 7:57 p.m at Yankees Stadium
Weather: Mostly Cloudy, 51 degrees
TV: FOX
Twitter: Phillies Nation
Once again, it’s do or die. Cliff Lee and Chase Utley pushed this series to Game 6. Now, Pedro Martinez is handed the ball needing to further extend the series. A win evens the series and keeps the Phillies’ hopes of repeating alive.
Pedro Martinez lost to the Yankees in Game 2, though he pitched very well. He gave up three runs in six innings, yet tonight is the type of situation where “the most influential player that ever stepped into Yankee Stadium” thrives.
The Phillies offense owe Pedro. He has been excellent during the postseason, but the Phillies failed to provide him with run support. Chase Utley brings in a hot bat and could break Reggie Jackson’s World Series home run record with another dinger tonight. As you recall, Jayson Werth hit two home runs off Pettitte in Game 3.
Unlike Pedro who is pitching on normal rest, Andy Pettitte is pitching on three days’ rest. In his career, Pettitte is 4-6 with a 4.15 ERA on short rest, with his last appearance coming in 2006. He has been perfect (wins-wise) this postseason. He won both clinching games of the postseason this year and he has a chance for another.
It’s a must-win. Keep the high hopes!
Phillies Lineup: Shane Victorino is in the lineup despite having a bruised finger. Raul Ibanez will DH with Ben Francisco in left. Pedro Feliz is batting seventh.
Rollins (SS), Victorino (CF), Utley (2B), Howard (1B), Werth (RF), Ibanez (DH), Feliz (3B), Francisco (LF), Ruiz (C)
Yankees Lineup: Jeter (SS), Damon (LF), Teixeira (1B), Rodriguez (3B), Matsui (DH), Posada (C), Cano (2B), Swisher (RF), Gardner (CF)
GO PHILLIES!
Your Gameday Beer – Baltic Thunder
This dark lager from Victory honors the Baltic god of thunder, and tonight so will the Phillies. Another heavyweight at 8.5% ABV, Baltic Thunder is brewed in the European porter style. With subtle strains of fruit found among the traditional thick roasted toffee and cocoa flavors, this is a porter you can drink more than one of. Tonight order a cheesesteak pizza and get crazy. – By Brian

Who would you have started Jeff G.? Blanton on short rest? Lee on short rest? Happ who looks awful? Hamels? Enough said. What other choice did Charlie have?

Well at least the throw to first did not go down the first base line. That is a positive.

Yea, it looks like they used up all their energy making sure the Yankees did not win it in Philadelphia. They just have no zip to them tonight. Maybe with the heart of the order coming up, they can do something. But they need to get through this inning first.
Great inning Durbin. You earned yourself almost half a beer.

Manuel has got to be the dumbest manager in the world. Only an idiot would have let Pedro pitch to Matsui with the bases loaded after the swings he’s had off of him. Not starting Lee in Game 4, bringing in Lidge in Game 4, taking Victorino out in Game 5…the list goes on and on. The bottom line though is we need to get better pitching in the offseason. No one has stepped up other than Lee, and that’s not going to win you a World Series.

Package Durbin in with Francisco on a ticket out of town. worthless.
Man, I miss JC Romero now. Typically Philly luck, our “inadvertent” supplement user is out most of the year with injuries while Yankees super-dopers (ARoid and Pettitte) are key contributors.

Oh well, I thought the Phils would at least show some fight in this game.
Rollins = unaaceptable, Victorino misplays the ball in center off of CAPTAIN JETER= unacceptable. Matsui is their DH. We have Mr.0 for career Francisco who can’t make a catch in left field.
THIS GREAT HITTING TEAM cannot touch Andy Pettite on 3 days rest.
Wait til next year and I hope I see the last of Feliz, Hamels, Myers, and that great bench of Stairs, Bruntlett and Bako. Oh and you can take Durbin with them.

Sorry Nation, the Yanks appear to want it more than our boys. It was going to be the battle of the pens tonight, but we could not chase Pettite early so herer we are.
I think the weak link was Cole. It tied-up Charlie and he had to cobble together a rotation. Lee came here to be the second in the rotation and pitched like an ace. Cole wilted. What if we had the World Series MVP back and Lee pitching like he has. Shoulda, coulda, woulda.
I still love this team and will not count them out until this game is over. I like their chances for another pennant in ’10 and will be right back at the Bank cheering them on.

Man Durbin came thru big this post season and I believe had gotten sick once the world series started. In every relief appearance Happ hasn’t thrown 1 first pitch strike

Well I am disappointed with this game and the pending result but I am anything but disappointed with this team. What this team did this year was fantastic. They are a great team and not all great teams win a World Series every year. Thank you 2009 Phillies. See you next year.

David the Mutts fan from Queens:
First, enjoy the next 6 months of Yankees fans getting in your grill. You have nowhere to go and your team will always be second place in NYC.
Second, the Mutts are so messed up – no farm system, bad contracts, terrible GM and pathetic manager still in place – you are looking at 3rd to 5th place NL East finishes for the next several years.
So back at you, A*Shole. Na Na Na Na.

Don’t be bitter, Stuart. I’m glad that my comment has given you some solace.
I take as much pleasure in watching your Phillies get bombed by Hideki Matsui as you do in watching me post something.
We’re both happy!

Other than Cliff Lee and Pedros first start in the WS, the Phillies have gotten absolutely no good pitching. Nothing. Blanton was average. Hamels is a whining jerk off that I really dont want in our city anymore. Hes not a worker, just a primadonna – SELL on him while they still can.
I thought they could beat this team, but they are getting HUMILIATED. This is disgraceful to lose to these MERCENARIES. The Phillies have a 5-man rotation of:
Clifff Lee
Pedro (he is actually our second best starter, scary, and hes a free agent)
NOTHING (Hamels, but Hamels is worthless and QUIT on this team)
Blanton (fine as a back end starter)
Happ (IS HE EVEN A STARTER ANYMORE? I say Sell high on him)
The Phillies need a second and 3rd starter. I dont even know what Hamels is, and I dont even care what he is actually. They have an ace, and a few back end starters. SOme of these guys really got exposed: Happ, Hamels.
Theyd better spend some money or trade some good hitting prospects away because they need a WHOLE lot more pitching than theyve got if they want to beat a team like this.
As far as tonight, good luck getting all those runs off Andy Pettite and Rivera.

Hey, come on phans, best chance to turn on the hits is with the top of the order coming up against Pettite after a long sit. You really think they’ll let the season end this way? Be positive! And that’s bad if I’M saying that because I thought they wouldn’t even make the playoffs! Have some faith! If they lose, well, would thinking they’ll lose all along make you feel any better?

Start spreading the news …..
The Phillies are toast ….
I want to be a part of it ! New York ! New York !
**27 Championships. And to knock off Philly makes it that much sweeter. All the talk of the “AL line up” that we had to endure the past 10 days. Besides Utley I didnt see anyone else show up to these games.

How pathetic must your life be that you have nothing better to do than make bad jokes on message board because another team is losing? Is your life really that empty? If it is, I feel sorry for you. Your joyless existence must be pretty sad.

it aint over yet but were just about to flat line. The bats haven’t shone up tonight and we all knew we didn’t have the pitching to make it thru the Yankees twice. Unfortunately Hamels was the lynch pin …But if we go down lets get some more nimbers on the board. Christ that went right to Jeter.
