Gameday 2009, Posts, World Series 2009
New York Yankees (2-1) at Philadelphia Phillies (1-2)
CC Sabathia, LHP, vs. Joe Blanton, RHP
Time: 8:20 p.m at Citizens Bank Park
Weather: Partly Cloudy, 56 degrees
TV: FOX
Twitter: Phillies Nation
The Phillies must even up the series after dropping last night’s game. Joe Blanton and the Phillies need to do whatever it takes to avoid falling to a 3-1 deficit.
Instead of throwing out Cliff Lee on three day’s of rest, Charlie Manuel opted to go with Blanton. Blanton last started in the National League Championship series and he allowed three earned runs in six innings. Blanton has struggled mightily against the Yankees throughout his career, but has not faced them since last season. The Phillies are in desperate need of a solid outing from Blanton, especially with Cole Hamels’ poor performance last night.
For the second time this postseason, CC Sabathia will pitch on short rest. The 280-pound left-hander threw 113 pitches in game one of the World Series. Sabathia pitched well, but was out-dueled by Lee and could not find a way to get Chase Utley out.
The offense is a big reason why the Phillies are in the World Series, but they are also a big reason why they are trailing 2-1. They have faced great pitching, but the Phillies are more than capable of putting up crooked numbers. Other than Utley in game one, the only players who are doing well are Jayson Werth (.400) and Carlos Ruiz (.333).
Your Gameday Beer – Tröegs Hopback Amber Ale
I’m surprised we didn’t recommended this beer during our summer of Amber Ales, but it is appropriate tonight as the Phillies need to hop back on the winning train. As advertised, this brew is loaded with citrusy hops, which accompany a pine, grass-like scent. The mouthfeel is smooth, thick and dry but full of flavor sensations. If you like the flavors of Pale Ales but not the bitterness, then this beer is worth a go. Have it with some grilled salmon seasoned with lemon. – By Brian
GO PHILLIES!

Blanton…settling in? Or just effective against the bottom third? We’ll see next inning whether he’s really settled down…or not.

why is Howard such a head case?
Predictablly swinging through those outside breaking balls.
Why can’t some one tell him to lay off?
Stop swinging! Just stop!!!!!!!
He can NOT do any worse than these ugly strike outs that’s probably getting into his head at this point.
I can not believe the massive mental meltdowns between Howard and Hamels.
Charlie, PLEASE DO SOMETHING!!

I was at the eagles game watching them destroy the midgets. The energy in that stadium was incredible. That first inning when the phils were up and got things going the crowd erupted, you could feel it throught the tv screen.

The xtra lefties in lineup only is a problem when Howard struggles like this. Which has not been very often in the 2nd half. The more glaring mistake perhaps is Charlie’s mis-use both Blanton/Happ in the post season season. The usual Blanton would be throwing 3-5 mph faster right now. The BP by commt. strategy(I’m aware of the BP issues) has finally caught up to us in the WS.

Blanton usually settles in after the first two, so he appears to be on track.
Ryan and Raul need to get on track or this is going to be too steep a hill to climb.

HK – yep. about Blanton…pretty rusty …i didn’t notice the velocity drop. that’s a problem…If he can the low strike I think he’ll be alright for awhile…I’d like to see more sliders to the righties

thanks j reed. hold’m here please Heavy B. We got the top of the line up coming up…. It’s only a matter of time before we get to C.C. The lefties – Chase just have to stop whaling on the low and away stuff.

@HK, 10 strike out in 13 tries, or something like that. What would you call that?
Whatever you want to call it, i’d say stop swinging. Try to get on base with a walk, maybe that’ll break the streak.

YEAH! That 2-2 pitch was strike 3, i was gonna be pissed if he didn’t do anything other than strike him out.
haha. the 3-2 pitch was more questionable then the 2-2 one was. Think the ump knew he blew it and gave him the benefit of the doubt?

james, good call. howard needs to have an AB where he doesn’t lift that bat. he’ll walk from the sliders out of the zone, and maybe that’ll jump start him again. it’s worth a shot.

hey, the lefty hitters have issues with lefty pitchers. Rollins keeps hitting fly outs. last night he lead off the game with a grounder down the line, so he has followed it up with fly outs. with his speed, put the ball on the ground.

It amazes me that the Phillies are the most patient team in the NL based on pitches per at bat, except for J-Roll. The one guy you want to be patient is anything but.

Jimmy Rollins needs to stop not getting on base. It’s killing us. I think that is more than Howard or Ibanez. Though not by much.

I’m listening to XM Philly feed while watching on the DVR synced up. Someone asked.
L.A. is disgusted with this ump and all the trips to the mound by the Yankees. This game is going to take long enough as it is without a mound visit by Posada, Jeter, Girard, etc between every two pitches.

The pitch to Shane may have been off the plkate by a couple inches. It is 94 MPH fastball. Chill out people, hitting a baseball is not an easy thing to do.

See how blanton does it? 2 strikes and you put the 3rd pitch in the dirt and try and make them CHASE it.
Maybe charlie knows what he’s doing after all
