Gameday 2009, Posts, World Series 2009
New York Yankees (2-1) at Philadelphia Phillies (1-2)
CC Sabathia, LHP, vs. Joe Blanton, RHP
Time: 8:20 p.m at Citizens Bank Park
Weather: Partly Cloudy, 56 degrees
TV: FOX
Twitter: Phillies Nation
The Phillies must even up the series after dropping last night’s game. Joe Blanton and the Phillies need to do whatever it takes to avoid falling to a 3-1 deficit.
Instead of throwing out Cliff Lee on three day’s of rest, Charlie Manuel opted to go with Blanton. Blanton last started in the National League Championship series and he allowed three earned runs in six innings. Blanton has struggled mightily against the Yankees throughout his career, but has not faced them since last season. The Phillies are in desperate need of a solid outing from Blanton, especially with Cole Hamels’ poor performance last night.
For the second time this postseason, CC Sabathia will pitch on short rest. The 280-pound left-hander threw 113 pitches in game one of the World Series. Sabathia pitched well, but was out-dueled by Lee and could not find a way to get Chase Utley out.
The offense is a big reason why the Phillies are in the World Series, but they are also a big reason why they are trailing 2-1. They have faced great pitching, but the Phillies are more than capable of putting up crooked numbers. Other than Utley in game one, the only players who are doing well are Jayson Werth (.400) and Carlos Ruiz (.333).
Your Gameday Beer – Tröegs Hopback Amber Ale
I’m surprised we didn’t recommended this beer during our summer of Amber Ales, but it is appropriate tonight as the Phillies need to hop back on the winning train. As advertised, this brew is loaded with citrusy hops, which accompany a pine, grass-like scent. The mouthfeel is smooth, thick and dry but full of flavor sensations. If you like the flavors of Pale Ales but not the bitterness, then this beer is worth a go. Have it with some grilled salmon seasoned with lemon. – By Brian
GO PHILLIES!

(SIGH!) And these stupid commercials with Hamels aren’t helping my attitude. I had to watch him choke last night, I don’t want to watch his commercials.

I think the most frustrating part is that if we win this game, we are in really really good shape. most likely a win tomorrow to go up 3-2. but none of the players or fans seem into it. that section of yankee fans are louder.

Our biggest hitters are showing up really small in the biggest venue in the game. Pretty disappointing.
I bet Blanton throws a 1-2-3 here.

Does anyone run their mouth when up to bat more than Posada? Honestly. I wish the ump would just tell him to STFU.

Well, at least the Phillies are crapping the bed so much that they might eventuallt run out of crap.
Also, Charlie needs to say something about Posada spending half the inning on the pitcher’s mound.

@FillyP…..please call dugout and send your message.
@Stuart….same last night. I was there. I tried my best. I will be there tomorrow too to witness the go ahead game in the series for the Phillies.
The Yankees are controlling the speed of this game in our own home turf. Something NEEDS to change with that. The meeting on the mound is bullcrap. The PHILLIES need to shake this Bank UPSIDE DOWN.

Was it Terry Murray who described the 97 Flyers as having a ‘choking situation?” It looks like that is what we have here with the Phillies.

I didn’t think this team would let the Yankee mystique and hype effect them, but something has derailed their momentum. I just don’t think Pettite last night and now Sabathia look as good as the Phils are making them.

This game is not over yet and the Phils can very easily force Rivera to blow a save. Too many fastballs (cut or not) vs the Phillies will eventually be hit and hit hard.

Tim L. – your right about Petite and CC…nothing spectacular…we are beating ourselves and the Yankees are to their credit taking advantage of the opportunities. Still plenty of game left

The Phillies are just not playing smart baseball. It is as simple as that. They are not making quality throws home. They are not taking advantage of the pitchers’ mistakes. They are not making adjustments.

I keep goig back to werth getting picked off in game two. that changed teh outcome i believe in that game. if he doesnt get picked off the phillies win game 2, go into philly up 2-0 and dont look back. it sucks that i cant stop thinking about a play in game 2.

If the Phillies can manage to tie this game again they will not lose. The fans will go crazy and not allow it.

I was at the game last night, and one of the biggest problems is that a lot of the lower level seats are all corporate. The real fans are in the top levels of the stadium, and it is loud up there, but it does not carry well. It really is a lot a Yankee fans at the games.

I’ll tell you what. Tomorrow night, Charlie should sit Ibanez. The guy is completely lost. How much more of his flailing do I need to watch?

Ben better stay in this game and start everyone from here on out. I would much rather have him hitting, fielding, and running the bases right now.
