You are saying dumb moves for things you have NO IDEA if they will work out or not. IF Castro plays like Beard, it was a dumb move, are you sure he will play like him? No, you cant base a "dumb move" on future performance, because you just dont know what it will be. I learned that one when flipping out that Burrell left, and Ibanez came in. Based it ASSUMING he would play differently. You are ASSUMING Castro will play like Bruntlett. Also, really, who was available for Lidge mid way through the season? Are you taking into account what Manuel was saying through the season? Manuel was never so attached to a starting pitcher keeping his job as he was Lidge keeping his Job. Did you forget that Manuel could have MULTIPLE TIMES changed Lidge out, instead it was the same story, "he is our closer" so why should RAJ have shopped for another closer? Getting Lee, Francisco and Pedro one would have to think had something to do with Manuels lack of confidence in his 5 man rotation and bench. RAJ I HIGHLY doubt is going to go out and make deals with out ever taking into account what the Manager thinks or needs. Thats not to say that RAJ will ALWAYS do what Manuel wants, but Im sure his opinion is seeked often. My comment was NOT "all self righteous" but seriously "If you think ANY of these count as a dumb move…then yeah..it was ok to say…dumb move yet again….." really, wow, thats a sad outlook on everything. with how that is said if someone makes ONE SINGLE mistake that sets a precedence that he will make a "dumb move...AGAIN". I didnt take issue with the "dumb move" comment, but to add in "yet again" makes RAJ sound like all he has done was make mistakes. RAJ is also the same GM who didnt succom to the pressure to get halladay for MORE than what he got him for. Jays wanted 4 for Halladay, 3 prospects PLUS Happ. Instead we waited, sent 3 prospects AND RECEIVED 6 Million, as well as keeping Happ. Asmuch as I love Happ on this team, if I had to choose between shipping Lee to Seattle or Losing Happ or Blanton, I would have kept Lee, but I doubt Seattle wanted Blanton, not many do, and Happ has earned another year, he was brilliant last season prior to his injury. EVERYONE makes mistakes, I wouldnt say that he has "screwed up plenty". Overall, RAJ has done a VERY nice job. Not saying he didnt walk into a sweet deal, but Ibanez worked out pretty darn well, Park out of the bullpen was for the most part awesome, sure Moyer had some rough spots, however, I think he was signed for LEADERSHIP, which can not go overlooked, and he also had some DAMN nice outings out of the bullpen, I dont agree with the 2 years, but oh well, went and took another chance on Pedro and that worked. Like it or not, RAJ is judged on all of our opinions, and he WILL be scrutinized OFTEN for what we THINK the player will do, and not wait to see. RAJ was called a moron for getting Ibanez, Pedro, NOT getting Halladay last season, and "only" getting Lee. shopping Lee correctly? Were you there on a conference call? Most reports I have seen were the Blue Jays called Seattle PRIOR to the deal asking them if they would take Lee. Sounds wierd, but almost like they set the deal up as part of the Halladay deal. Look, Im not the only one who responded to your comment, I just so happened to be the long winded one, but I know I NEVER would have responded, nor most wouldnt have either if you 1 backed your story with past performance, or 2, left it at dumb move. It may have been, but RAJ has done a NICE job setting this team up for success. Who signed Howard, Gillick or Ruben? I dont remember, but I was definately surprised when he was signed because the Phillies for YEARS, probably more like decades wouldnt spend the money to make a run, or keep a good team intact. 93 was a one hit wonder. prior to that, the team of the early 80's was good for years. Finally they are starting to spend money to keep the Phillies VERY competitive. However I definately agree "I don't envy Ruben". He makes the TOUGH decisions to not always get what the fans want, get another integral piece (Lee) then let the fan favorite go (again Lee) to go out and get the player that the fans wanted. Not to mention the other "risks" he went for. Without risk, you have no benefit. When you take risk, he will make mistakes, but honestly with the amount of risk he has taken, im surprised he hasnt made more dumb moves. his risks have worked out. I will support him until the majority of his moves stop working.

There is only one thing I agree with…Moyers 2 year deal. He was too old for that. isPermaLink="false">http://www.philliesnation.com/?p=10614#comment-161966

Did I really just read someone type "Dumb move by Ruben…yet again." AGAIN? What? HELLO, welcome to being a Phillies fan mr bandwagon. I was one of the MOST CRITICAL of RAJ prior to the 2009 season, but come on man, get with it. So MAYBE some of his decisions might not work out, but they havent happened yet, so far HE AND HE ALONE are credited with Lee, Pedro Martinez and Raul Ibanez. Maybe I am wrong, but I thought I watched Lee COMPLETELY DUMB FOUND the Dodgers and Yankees, Pedro Martinez pitched a VERY winnable game against a very potent offense of the Yankees, and also pitched VERY well at 5-1 with a 3.64 ERA, and Ibanez prior to his injury was on MVP pace. Sure he had a mediocre 2nd half, but I think that has alot to do with his injury. MAYBE some of his decisions this season could bite us as in Lee trade, or things like that, but to say "yet again", makes no sense. Back to the Lee trade, sure I think the Phillies could have afforded Lee and Halladay, and I really think that would have made everything so much easier to have those two pitchers as a one two punch, but I really think Lee getting shipped had ALOT MORE to do with Lee's Agent then it had to do with Lee or RAJ. Ive read a few articles saying Lee didnt want to be traded or leave, and thought he would retire there, not really going into what his agent was telling RAJ. I obviously wasnt there, but hearing all the reports and seeing it (take it with a grain of salt) on ESPN, that Lee's agent was trying to get Sabathia type money for Lee, and while granted they made a counter offer to the Phillies original offer, with what I have seen, Lee's agent wasnt really giving any sort of indication of caring where Lee played, but more all about the money. It leads me to believe that while Lee wanted to stay in Philly, his agent was more set on money then Lee may have been. Hell you never know, if Lee REALLY wants to be in Philly he could finish his current contract in Seattle and sign a lower contract to go to Philly (similar to Halladay). I HATE to see Lee go, but from my Arm chair, I dont blame RAJ for it what what I have read, I blame Lee's agent. I mean I HIGHLY doubt that Lee would move back to Philly, but if the Phillies go deep in the playoffs AGAIN, he may say screw you to his agent, and head to Philly (fantasy land I think), then we would have Halladay, Lee AND the prospects. I also remember readin somewhere that the Blue Jays called Seattle and asked them how they would feel if they could get Lee. So my question to that is...Did the Blue Jays as part of the trade for some reason make the Halladay trade contigent upon the Phillies dealing Lee. Dont know why they would do that since they are AL, but it sounds wierd that they would ask Seattle if they would trade for Lee from the Phillies. Unless the Phillies said they had to trade a starting pitcher in order to afford Halladay (supposedly) and the Blue Jays took it upon themselves to find a team that wanted one of the pitchers. Either way, regardless of the Halladay/Lee thing, can we really say the current Rollins decision is a bad idea? NO. He is one of the best players in the game, while he had difficulties at the beginning of the season offensivly, he ended it pretty good, from a defensive perspective, can you say ANOTHER gold glove? IF he goes completely in reverse, it was a bad move, if he only slows down a little bit, probably a decent move.

Did I really just read someone type “Dumb move by Ruben…yet again.” AGAIN? isPermaLink="false">http://www.philliesnation.com/?p=10614#comment-161935

Why does everyone keep saying lee and halladay were never going to play together. That's idiotic. Why not? Lee was only making 9 million this year. Its not like they were both making 20 million. And if lee left at the end of the year, the phils would have got 2 draft picks. they could have easily kept lee. The mariners prospects will never amount to anything and trading lee to save 9 million is going to be looked at as one of the worst trades in history. When the phils are struggling to figure who will pitch game 2 of the division series next year, amaro, will be wishing he spent the extra 9 million to be able to pencil in lee instead of smoltz or martinez. And how much is the 5th starter going to cost. Would you want smoltz and polanco or lee? Easy choice.

Why does everyone keep saying lee and halladay were never going to play together. That’s idiotic. No trades can be considered good or bad for a couple of years unless they are like the Johan trade. If these prospects are playing at the Bank in '11 or '12 and contributing then it was not a bad trade. If not then it was, Lee and Doc where never going to play here together, you have to get that through you heads, it just was not going to happen. The FO obviously likes the guys they got in the trade to Seattle, so let it play out before you jump on them.
I like picking up the Option on JRoll early it show you are comitted to him, and maybe even getting ready to sign him next year to another 3-5 years.

I think you guys who are jumping all over RAJ are a little short sighted, all about what this one year could bring us. I got $112 for 12 players if you count picking up Castro at $700k and buying out Romero at $250k instead of paying him 4.25. That's not counting a big number for Victorino in arbitration, lesser amount for Ruiz and Happ, re-signing or replacing Werth, 2 starting pitichers, and the bulk of the bullpen.

The math is about right. Here's the latest on their search:Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports reports (via Twitter) that the Phils offered Scott Eyre a minor league deal. The lefty wants more, so he hasn't accepted the offer. The Yankees have some interest in Eyre, but have yet to make him a formal offer.
Phils GM Ruben Amaro Jr. tells Scott Lauber of the News Journal that he doesn't expect to reach a deal with Chan Ho Park. "I just don't think Chan Ho and the Phillies are going to be able to bring the marriage together," Amaro said.

From MLBtraderumors.com

The Phillies would like to add relievers. These guys are really important and it would be a shame if we lose a bunch of games because we cannot hold on to leads in the sixth inning to ninth. A lot of games are won in the last 4 innings of a game. Are we asleep at the switch? Or should we expect someting positive soon? After all, I believe we are losing Park and Eyre --- two important players last year.

I am probably getting worked up over nothing, but I do hear of other teams signing some decent middle relief pitchers. isPermaLink="false">http://www.philliesnation.com/?p=10614#comment-161915

You pick up options early so your players aren't distracted with contract issues, so they'll play more confidently because ownership doesn't think they'll slip, so that teammates can rely on them, and so fans can be reassured the team will have a position at least covered. As far as flexibility, the Phils will need a shortstop no matter what; it's not like choosing between an eleven man or a twelve man pitching staff. If Rollins slipped so badly his option shouldn't be renewed, it would have to be next year, which isn't that likely. Short term injuries can be a problem no matter who is playing, and most contracts carry insurance for long term or career threatening injuries. Lighten up, John.

You pick up options early so your players aren’t distracted with contract issues, so they’ll play more confidently because ownership doesn’t think they’ll slip, so that teammates can rely on them, and so fans can be reassured the team will have a position at least covered. He's dirt cheap compared with too many others. Even if he slows a bit by 2011, he'll still likely be one of the best shortstops going.

None of us are privy to the negotiations, so none of us has the right to say who we should or could have gotten for Lee.

I’m glad to see Rollins’ option picked up. What about flexibility, or injury or massive decline.
