Rosenthal: Lee & Halladay in Same Deal?

I originally wasn’t going to post this because there is “no proof” that the Phillies are considering this.  However, there seems to be a lot of talk regarding this topic.

Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports wonders if Cliff Lee and Roy Halladay could be traded in the same deal.  It sounds absurd, but if you read into it more, it makes a little bit of sense.  It would not be a straight up exchange; it would be a part of a three or four team trade.  Basically, Lee would be traded for prospects.  Those prospects would be sent to Toronto for Halladay.  If the Phillies send more prospects, there is a chance that the Blue Jays would eat some of Halladay’s salary.  Remember, “it’s just a hunch.”

Most of you are thinking: the idea is to have Lee AND Halladay.  Todd Zolecki of MLB.com also breaks down the idea.  Money is the issue.  Moving Lee would free up about $2 million.  The Phillies aren’t making much progress on a contract extension with Lee, who might want to test free agency next year.  Halladay, also a free agent next season, would most likely require a contract extension for him to wave his no-trade clause.  Then, the Phillies would have Halladay long term instead of Lee.  If Lee and Halladay are on the same team, and even if the Phillies are able to lower their payroll (Joe Blanton would probably be the first one to go), it’s unlikely that the Phillies would be able to keep both Lee and Halladay past 2010.

With that being said, I do not think trading Lee for Halladay is a good idea.  I’d take the risk of having Lee and Halladay on the same team for one year; a year that instantly makes the Phillies World Series favorites.  If that can’t happen, I’m perfectly fine with signing Lee long term.

What do you think?  Is trading Lee for Halladay a good or bad idea?

This makes a ton of sense… if you’re a GM and you want to get the most value for Cliff Lee, who is going to walk after this season, you need to trade him. It’s the same premise that non-contenders live by – prospects are better than draft picks. The problem with being a contender is that Rube can’t sacrifice today to benefit the future. We need a front line pitcher…. BUT if he can trade Lee for prospects that will allow us to get Roy Halladay AND an extension, it’s a no-brainer. Halladay for multiple years is certainly better than Lee for one year. I would be willing to sacrifice my dream rotation (Halladay, Lee, Hamels) for multiple years of Halladay.

The point of trading for Halladay now is to create an unstoppable trio at the top of the rotation for this season, then extend Halladay or Lee (likely Lee wil walk). Then you offer Lee arbitration and let him go as a FA, so you can recoup the prospects and restock the farm a little bit. You will only get salary relief for Blanton, not prime prospects.

Also, if Amaro trades Lee to another NL contender, especially the Dodgers, thats ground for immediate removal. You DONT do that…

I could just see the Dodgers and even Atlanta drooling at the chance to get a pitcher of Lee’s caliber. Dodgers have more of a need for him though, since Atlanta already has an excellent rotation. But yeah, Amaro has to trade to a non-contender…and i’d prefer he didn’t trade Lee at all.

Geoff, the point is to make the team better without compromising the future. The point of trading Lee away to get Halladay is that it might be the only way that you’re going to get Halladay without severely impacting the future. I would think that one year of Halladay and Lee is not worth major weaknesses down the road.

I really dont think they will get that much for Halladay actually. They will likely get more from the Angels than they would from us.

Trading Lee just to get Halladay is more or less a lateral move, Halladay is better, but not really by enough to justify going to all that trouble. Particularly if it meant trading Lee to a contender. Thats just plan stupid. No chance…

Looks like John Lackey might be signing with BOSTON, he either took, or is taking a physical for them today

which would mean that LA Angels need to acquire an ACE… which means they’ll likely up their bid for Roy Halladay.. and our dreams of getting him might be over

With two “ACES” on our roster already.. we clearly won’t try to match an offer that the Angels put out there.. they NEED Halladay, we only WANT Halladay

Why does everyone assume Lee will walk after this year?

because LEE is said to be seeking AT LEAST 5 YEARS when he becomes a Free Agent

the Phillies don’t like to go past 3 years for pitchers.. and they aren’t going to have the budget to pay him $20-25 M for 5+ years

so he’s most likely going to get paid by someone else next season

From an article on ESPN.com last year when we traded for Lee…

“Lee, who was a guest on ESPN950 in Philadelphia on Wednesday morning, was asked if he definitely plans to test free agency.

“That’s where every player wants to be, so honestly, the closer I get to that point, the more likelihood I’m going to be testing free agency,” he said. “But I still have a year and two months ’til then, so we’ll see.”"

Sounds like he’s going to test free agency, to me.

    Thanks Don,
But dont you think if he gets to play in another playoff/series,he may soften up to 3 years?

I guess what really bugs me is that we finally get really good players who want to be here, and then ,when it comes down to keeping them,$60 million isnt enough…….they need $120 million.Only Then can they be happy.
    What a bunch of bull**it!

Well, we all better PRAY that Cole Hamels gets his crap back together, and that Kyle Drabek lives up to everything he’s supposed to be, because once Lee walks, our teams pitching staff will depend on those 2.

    Let the Hallladay madness continue……

I love Lee but if u could flip him to a third team and give that team gives Toronto their propects AND sign Halladay to an extension, YOU’D HAVE TO DO THAT? Right?

CSN’s Jim Salisbury reports today that the Phillies are “actively talking” about a contract extension with Roy Halladay’s agent, according to two baseball sources. One of those sources told Salisbury Doc is likely to take a physical with the Phillies this week. The Philadelphia Inquirer’s Andy Martino adds that Halladay and his agent have checked into a Philadelphia-area hotel.

What’s more, Salisbury writes of “indications that pitcher Cliff Lee could be traded.” SI’s Jon Heyman wrote today that Lee would take no discount to sign an extension. Ken Rosenthal and Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports write that “a three-team blockbuster that would send Halladay to the Phillies and Lee to another club is under discussion.” They add that the Mariners have “contemplated dealing for Lee in recent days,” but a straight Phillies-Jays trade is also possible. The writers say these complex talks involve the Phils receiving money to put toward Halladay’s $15.75MM salary next year.

Questions: would Halladay command a C.C. Sabathia contract, even though he’ll be 33 in May? And which teams could match up for Lee aside from the Mariners? The Angels, Dodgers, Brewers, Rangers, Rays, and Red Sox were linked to Lee in July trade talks, but things have changed since then.

    According to MLBtraderumors.com

Yea, everything I’ve heard about Lee is that he’s seeking that Monster contract … he wants to be paid like one of the top pitchers in baseball

No chance he turns down 5+ years, $20-25 per year… just to stay with the Phillies for 3 years, $20 M

If we can do that trade, and on our end, its just a straight-up Lee goes somewhere, and Roy Halladay comes here …. you have to make the move !

Halladay is the better pitcher, would balance our rotation more, and would be more willing to sign a team-friendly extension
