Odds and Ends: Weekend Recap

Odds And Ends, Posts

-Ed Wade continues to build a Triple-A team consisting of former Phillies.  He inked Brett Myers to a one-year, $5 million (with mutual option for ’11) deal over the weekend, and it appears Myers will be a starter for the 2010 season.  He’s still just 29 years old, but carries a lot of wear and tear on his right arm.  Myers will join Pedro Feliz, Jason Michael, Gary Majewski, and Michael Bourn as ex-Phils that have reunited in Houston.

In my opinion, Myers is a decent one-year guy, however, $5 million seems a bit much.  But I also thought the same when Billy Wagner got $7 million and Brandon Lyon scored a three-year, $15 million deal from, you guessed it, Ed Wade.  With the Myers Era officially over in Philadelphia, what is your favorite memory of the righty?  (Try and be nice about it, too.)  I’d have to say I’ll always remember him for the glove throw following the 2007 NL East clinching game.  Good luck to Myers with the Astros.

-This is a bit of older news, but Adrian Beltre inked a one-year, $9 million contract with the Boston Red Sox, complete with an option for the following season.  Lost in the shuffle is the news that he turned down a three-year, $24 million deal from the Phillies to play in Boston.

Seems odd to me in this time of economic turmoil that a guy would leave roughly $15 million guaranteed on the table to play for a franchise that is on the same level as the Phillies.  It’s interesting, too, because he hasn’t had an amazing season since the mid-2000′s, so he stands to lose money should he tank.  I personally believe he was a slightly better option at third than Polanco because of his pop when healthy, plus his defensive acumen at third.  Polly will do a great job, but this move by Beltre remains a head-scratcher.

-It’s just about one week until figures are exchanged for arbitration, and the Phillies have two big cases looming.  Shane Victorino and Joe Blanton are arb eligible and it’s a foregone conclusion they will both get relatively hefty raises.  Victorino made $3.125 million last year, while Blanton received $5.475 million.

Shane is eligible once again in 2011, should he and the Phillies not come together on a long-term deal.  Right now, there has been no talk of such a contract being in the works.  Are the Phillies saving their pennies for a run at Jayson Werth? Would it be wise to grab Shane on a three-year, $24 million deal that is backloaded a bit. Perhaps $6 million, $8 million, $10 million?  If you’re Ruben Amaro, do you hold off on that and wait for arbitration to play out for the next two seasons?  It’s a very interesting argument right now with the Phillies self-imposed $140 million cap this season.

The Brewers are brain dead for paying that kinda money to Wolf. All it takes is one team to fall in love with a guy during free agency and and a stupid deal gets signed. I like Wolf and Blanton about the same, maybe Blanton a tad more. If Wolf didn’t have a team in love with him then he may have languished until now and taken 3y21m or maybe even 3/18. Garrett Anderson – not signed. Jermaine Dye – not signed. These guys are not gonna get what they’re worth, especially Dye. Beltre waited until he was the last 3B and he got hosed. I have a better chance of seeing God than Beltre has of getting 640 plate appearances.

Werth is injury prone?? …. because he got hit on the wrist with a fastball and missed two years ?

Fianlly made it to lunch. Disagree with Werth being injury prone. He got hit by an inside fastball on the wrist, and the Dodgers misdiagnosed it, messed around for two years before releasing him. Other than that, he’s been healthy. He’ll get a 4 year deal minimum, and I give him a pretty good chance of playing it out healthy. My bigger concern is the health of Vic. Not to harp on it, but he’s had injuries (knee, calf, left hip, lower back), not good for a speed guy. Strictly on injury history, Werth is more likely to be in the starting line-up.

Exactly !!! We’ll see if he overcomes that moniker.

That doesn’t make someone injury prone..

I would say guys like Chipper Jones, AJ Burnett, Vlad Guerrero … those are injury-prone guys

not somebody who missed extended time with a freak injury

Werth is not that much over 30…not a good enough reason to not give him 4 years….and has he even been on the DL with the Phillies??…I don’t think so….pretty sure all that stuff is in the past..

In fact…Werth impresses me MORE…because he worked really hard to get over that injury…and prove himself to the Phillies as an everyday player.

I also think Wolf was overpaid, but lefty pitchers fetch a premium, and he is a character guy going to a young, somewhat immature team.
Unless the market really bottoms out (and it usually doesn’t 2 yrs in a row), I think Blanton will command a 4 yr, $28-32 M deal (unlikely to be from the Phils).

As I said earlier, Blanton will be replaced by Happ (if he continues to pitch well) and Happ’s rotation spot will be filled with a less expensive pitcher from somewhere else. Most teams can’t pay the number three/four rotation spot more than about $7 million. Blanton is most likely gone in 2011.

Wolf, obviously, is considered a number two man by the Brewers.

does anyone know the what’s going on with Mr. Sheets? Not thinking of him in red pinstripes but just want to know if he has gone to a rival team.

if werth has another 30hr/100 rbi career-year-type season, i definitely see the phils offering him a 4 year deal. money per season, eh, is hard to speculate at this point. i would say around 10mil per season, but he could probably get more than that from a team (like SF) who will probably be in a desperate need of offense….

problem is….i want ryan howard here for his career. let werth walk, let victorino walk if you need to…those guys come and go. a home-grown slugger in his prime like ryan howard doesnt come around very often and i would love the phils to lock him up in a 100-somethin mil contract for multiple years. i know alot disagree with me because howard ‘strikes out all the time.’ i dont care. he smashes the ball, he is one of the top 5 most dangerous hitters at any given time, and he still has room for improvement on his selection of pitches (IE low, outside, offspeed garbage).

a signing of vic to a 3 year deal would possibly keep this option open for howard. a signing of werth to a 4 year deal would make it MUCH harder for the phils to fork out howard-type money…

The Phillies have $27.286m committed for 2012 before arbs. Just in case anyone is interested.

    jrollpatrol08….

First off…Jayson Werth will command more that $10MM per year….AT LEAST $12-$14 MM per year…

Keeping someone with his versatility (can play all three OF positions), speed, defensive capability, …and power is very important.

    The Phillies won’t be able to keep Howard…at $25MM for something like 5 years…forget it…the Phils won’t….and shouldn’t….pay it.

Where’s that money targeted for? Which players?

Strike that J. 15.286m and its all goes to Chase. The club holds an option on Lidge for 12m. Suffice it so say they probably won’t be exercising it.

nobody here realistically sees howard in a contract beyond his current one?

No. He’s gonna command more than the Phillies want to pay…

I love Ryan Howard…he’s a monster when he’s hot…and we’ve all seen just HOW hot he can get…

But I just don’t think the Phillies should committ what’s probably going to be $115-125MM over five years…for one player..

There will be other left-handed power bats available at that time that will cost HALF that much…Will they be Ryan Howard? No. But someone that can hit 30-40 HRs and drive in 100-120 runs..Adam Dunn maybe??…might just do the trick.

Howard for Dunn and Zimmerman. It will go down on August 29, 2011. Washington will extend him 5y/130m prior to the deal. The Phillies actually have it pretty good. They have their core in tact for two more years and, depending on what they wanna do, they can let some pieces go while replacing them with others, like the Braves, or they can, if revenue permits, sign the core to a few more years. But halladay is here for 4 (four!) for a reason. And its not to pitch for a loser.

I feel that if they can afford it I think you could lock up Ryan for 4 years 20-22 million to stay on a winning team in Philly. Or even 4 years 100 million. I think that can be done, and keep Wreth, Chase JRoll. Since according to most of you on here the Phillies have a wealth of talent in minors who play outfield. So if you can good young outfielders than you can pay Ryan. Maybe it is just me but I think the Big Guy likes it here in Philly, unless the Cardnials, his home town would pay him, but they have Holliday, and Pujouls. I do not see him going to NY or Boston, or the west coast. Or playing for a losing team like the Nats or Baltimore.

No way any sane man kisses of 20 million dollars of 4 years. Thats a bit more than a hometown discount. BUT! We do have one thing going for us: Ryan has already had the equivalent of a HUGE contract. in 2012 he’ll already be super rich…so…..who knows?

    Howard for Dunn AND Zimmerman….hmmmm…

“No way any sane man kisses of 20 million dollars of 4 years.”

–um…the phils are payin halladay 20mil/year for his contract extention of 3 years (possibly 4 with the friendly option). cc makes 23mil/year, johan makes real close to that. you see where im goin with this. if halladay would have waited for FA or approved a trade to NYY, BOS, LAA, or maybe even LAD, he could have EASILY gotten cc money if not more, and possibly another year on the extention. roy halladay turned down close to 15-20 million dollars to play here…and he is definitely ‘sane’

“Howard for Dunn and Zimmerman. It will go down on August 29, 2011.”

hmmm…well 1st of all, its only 2010 and adam dunn has already been moved to 1st base cause he is a defensive liability. i cannot imagine how incredibly bad he will be, even at 1st, in 2 more years. he will be in the AL by then, and he deserves to be. phils fans get all over howard b/c he cant throw to 2nd base…what the hell do you think adam dunn is gonna do??? gimme a break. AND i agree, i dont see him going to an NLEAST rival if he does get a contract……especially the nats who are probably not going to be a serious competitor.
