Split Squad Games Rained Out Today

Sorry Phillies fans, no baseball today.  Due to the monsoon-like rains in Florida, both split squad games have been cancelled with no make up date.  But worry not, the Phils will be back tomorrow taking on the Twins in Clearwater, when it is supposed to be clear with no (falling) water.

J.A. Happ will start against Minnesota.  Feel free to use this space as a spot to reflect on what has happened in Spring Training thus far.  Here are a few story lines:

GOOD: Cole Hamels, Roy Halladay, Antonio Bastardo, David Herndon

SO-SO: Phillippe Aumont, Shane Victorino’s shoulder, Brad Lidge’s recovery, JC Ramirez

BAD: J.C Romero’s recovery, Jose Contreras, Ryan Vogelsong’s ERA

if you’re talking the good you have to be talking about domonic brown, mayberry, kendrick and moyer. kendrick taking up residence under the learning tree of roy halladay is great news. i’m excited for bastardo this season but he’s only seen one inning of work so far, a little early to get a read. carpenter has put up good numbers which is nice to see, you can never have too many arms in the sytem.

I agree with christopher: gotta add Moyer, Kendrick, Mayberry and Brown to the GOOD.

I think Mayberry Jr has to be on the the good list, he has only struck out like 2 times and every time I have seen him he has hit the ball hard.
KK has also been pretty strong thus far in the spring.
I am not ready to write off Contreous yet, he seems to be throwing all breaking balls so I think he is just working something out there. I know they are long way off, and I can not picture his name but the skinny kid at SS looks pretty good I think he is A or AA guy this year

Good: almost every one of our potential bench players has performed exceptional (Dobbs hitting .364, Mayberry .350, Gload .333, Castro .333). Ben Fran has not hit well but he has played well (overall). Our starters have been great. Polanco has done exactly what we want him to do with a bat.

So-So: Young arms… JC Ramirez, Aumont, Mathieson, Savery

Bad: Vic’s Shoulder, JC Romero and Werth’s beard

Werth’s beard bad? I hope you mean in an insanely cool way. I imagine it stays in FLA – maybe he’ll auction it off (or it may just come to life on it’s own, like a miniature cousin It).

I’ve been pretty encouraged by the pitching staff all around. It really seems like the routine and preparation Halladay is known for has really been infectious for the staff in general. The one guy in particular that I find very intriguing going forward is Herndon. He has shown promise thus far, and his status as a rule 5 guy only adds to the intrigue in my mind. With limited space available on the 25 man roster, he’s a long-shot, but still seems like a quality arm that would benefit the Phils’ system. Unfortunately, I can’t see the Angels not taking him back given the opportunity. The question is, if performance continues, can Herndon be a legitimate contributer to the pen for the entire season? Worth keeping an eye on….

As an aside, I recieved my Maple Street Press Philles almanac for ’10, edited by the talented Joe Weitzal of beerleaguer.com (fantastic Phils site) Though I’ve only briefly glanced so far, I’m quite excited to really scour the publication. I’m certain that it’ll keep my Phillies obsessed mind busy until April 5. It’s is a little pricy at 12.99, but I certainly am not regretting the purchase.

Young arms are almost always so-so. Aumont and Ramirez both pitched better the second time out. I’d give them all more time. Same goes for Contreras. Spring is a time for trying new things, or working on certain aspects of the game to the detriment of results.

Victorino is back in action, so his shoulder problems aren’t so-so anymore. Romero is on his projected recovery schedule. Lidge is ahead of his, so that’s not bad, either.

A low ERA from Vogelsong would be totally unexpected, so a bad one isn’t really that bad.

I guess that only leaves Werth’s beard as a potential “situation.”

Herndon intrigues me, too. He’s done well so far; probably better than the Angels were anticipating. It’s still early, though.

I can’t really see a spot for him barring injury to someone else, but I’d hate to see him slip back to the Angels. He gets ground ball outs, which is perfect for CBP if he continues this. Maybe the Phils could convince the Angels to trade him (they wouldn’t have left him unprotected if they thought he’d be useful to them) for someone the Phils don’t need, and Herndon can gain more polish at Lehigh Valley.

Yea Thanks Chuck that is whom I was talking about Glavis, he has shown a good arm and a pretty quick bat the few times I have seen him play. I DVR all the ST games on MLB network, so I replay them and watch them a lot.

I don’t mind the beard but he does look a little bit like the uni-bomber… or Jaysus. If I’m his agent, I’m wondering what the heck he’s thinking.

Young arms have been good but I list them as so-so because I understand that you can’t put too much creedence in SPT. Realistically, if even one of those guys helped us this year, that would be outstanding.

I think Werth’s beard is making him more marketable. He’s gaining national recognition with his beard, and when he goes out as a free agent, his agent will use that as a bargaining chip. Werth’s beard will put fans in seats.

Blanton I think is another guy to keep an eye on. Some people have been a bit critical of the contract he earned this offseason, but I have a feeling we have yet to see the best from Kentucky Joe. If Hamels returns to being the pitcher we all know he is, and Joe maintains his consistency, I think our 1-3 matches up with any team in the bigs. Decent years from Happ and the five slot and I feel like we match up well against any of the 29 other teams in baseball.

I’ve read in several places that the Skankees are thought to have the best lineup in baseball. Sure, the DH gives any AL team an advantage over a NL counterpart, but as far as position players, I really don’t see them being any better than our starting 8. Also a lot has been made of a new defensively orientated Boston line-up. Good defense is paramount to winning of course, but, at what point do you give up offensive production for defensive superiority. My hunch is that the Redsox will be defensively excellant, but will they score enough? Are we seeing the Sox morph into a team more like the ’09 Mariners? Other than the Skanks is there really another team (on paper) that matches up that well against the Phils?

The beard is a definite no. Werth used to be one of the finest looking gents on the team. Now he looks like the guy panhandling outside the stadium.

I respect the fact it’s his own face, but c’mon…give the ladies some eye candy!

The beard makes Werth look so “badass”. I like it and I actually think he looks better with it like that than with that scruffy little goatee.

my wife hated werth and would fight with her hen-pecking yenta girlfriends about how ugly he was…until the beard.

now, she wants me to dress up like werth (w/ beard) for some role-playing exercises…

We enjoy the games but I find Werth a bit of a distraction now with my wife yelling, ‘hit the ball. even a caveman could hit this pitcher.’ Makes me wonder if he’s looking for a ‘Geico’ endorsement.

This guy Herrndon is interesting, three times out and all he does is throw ground balls. Not sure they will want to hide a rule five player while chasing a third trip to the WS

I agree with Brett….Werths beard will be very marketable this season. I can see CBP actually selling the beards this season making LOTS of Money, while at the same time Werth will use it to his best advantage next season in landing a sweeter contract.

Both Brown and Mayberry have been on fire this spring…Your looking at your future Phillies outfielders fellas.

John, I too heard that same BS –
If you take position by position, the Shanks probably have the edge on 3b and the SS is a sure HOF player but, judge for yourselves:
3B – Arod vs Polanco – no contest, Arod
SS – Jeter vs Rollins – Jeter
2B – Cano vs Utley – no question, Chase gets the nod
1B – Texiera vs Howard – arguements? Tex has a better average and a better glove but Howard? If he does not get hurt, even with a shortened career ahead of him he is HOF material. Tex is very good but, Howard gets my nod
C – Posada vs Chooch – for most of Philly its Chooch, for the sake of arguing, lets say Posada
LF – Winn vs Ibanez – I’d have to say Raul
CF – Granderson vs Victorino – who would I want on my team? Granderson has more power but a mediocre average (I think very overrated) I’d have to choose Vic for his spunk, defense and ability to stir the pot.
RF – Swisher vs Werth – No question its Jason.
The Shanks of course have the DH which unless I’m mistaken will be Nick Johnson. The Phils have a much improved (face it, anything is an improvement from last year) bench.
That is the Offense – Pitching is another story. With the addition of Vazquez, the 1-4 starters could be the best in the league. Are they enough to scare us? Not in the least.
IF the Shanks make it to the big dance this year (IF!), this will be a fun series..

Im going to go with the Red Sox on the best pitching staff in baseball, i feel thats its hard to argue otherwise

Chris I., the minute CBP starts selling “Werth Beards” I will start hating the fu*king beard…

I agree with Heather, Werth was some fine eye candy pre-beard, now he looks like he’s trying to channel the nickname we gave him a few years ago here (I think it was Rob)-”Teen Wolf”. That butt-ugly beard will have to go before the season starts, unless there’s a bird’s nest in there now, can’t disturb the hatchlings…
