Sore Shoulder Keeps Victorino Away from Drills

It was a quiet day in Clearwater, as the team prepares for their first spring training game. However, the news reported was not something that Phillies fans want to hear.
Shane Victorino suffered from soreness in his right shoulder. Victorino took batting practice, but did not participate in outfield drills for precautionary reasons.
Luckily, the injury is not serious. Charlie Manuel is unsure if Victorino will play in Wednesday’s exhibition against Florida State.

It is still early, so I hope it does not become a lingering injury for Shane.
We need him healthy to be the best team they can be. But I think with PP it gives us some wiggle room in the batting order, and I think for short stints Werth in CF and Francisco in right would be ok. But just not for a prolonged period of time.

We can’t over react just yet.
Injuries are a part of the game.
Someone, please pass me a beer!

I still say that Ruben should have extended Werth before extending Victorino, since Werth is a lot more important to the team in the longrun. Gillies is shaping up to be a guy who could be even better than Victorino, and he would be a lot cheaper than Vic.

I think there are too many questions about Werth yet for either side to commit to an extension. Werth himself may not be ready to sign, because he likely feels he needs one more season to establish himself. In other words, the better he performs in 2010, the more money he’s likely to get. He knows that. Same goes for the Phils’ front office. They can’t commit maximum dollars and years for a player who, so far, has had one and a half good seasons. (He wasn’t full time until mid-2008.)
Victorino may not be perceived as being as important, but he’s been a force for SEVERAL years now. He’s totally established himself, and isn’t breaking the bank.
And Gillies may not be ready to replace anybody for another 2-3 years.

I think Victorino should be fine..
but I would imagine that Werth would move to CF . . and Brown would get called-up in the event of any longterm injury.
Berry could be ready defensively (though people laughed at my last year when I said I thought he would actually help an MLB team).. he just can’t really hit
I dont think they want to move Werth to CF if they can help it.. and I dont think Francisco has the arm to play RF

After all the odd Victorino stories I’ve seen this off-season and some of his MMA TV sightings, I’m not surprised that Victorino isn’t quite up to peak physical condition coming into spring training.

I don’t think the MMA has anything to do with Victorino’s shoulder. I’m sure it will all work out just fine.

Its probably all those ugly shirts he creates and wears that messed up his shoulder
Ed Hardy style clothes weren’t even cool when they were “cool” . . . let alone 5 years later, when you try to design spinoff brands
Dear Shane,
Focus on baseball, little man!

To some extent, I agree with Gaze_NJ. From all the pictures I’ve seen of the Phillies this offseason, a good 30-50% have been of Shane Victorino, either at the MMA or hanging out at clubs. Couple that with a new multiyear contract and the cynic in me thinks that he’s probably not in the best shape right now.

Sounds like a rotator… let’s hope it’s nothing too serious. If it’s a rotator, he’ll be able to swing/run but fielding (particularly throwing) will hurt for a while. Strengthening will be crucial… he’s not a pitcher or an infielder so I would think that he’ll be alright as long as he takes it easy.

Just the fact that we’re all talking about this….Shane’s “behavior”…..reinforces why he isn’t one of my favorite Phillies.

He just got married.. so i highly doubt he just became Pat Burrell all of a sudden…
its the off season, and he just so happens to like MMA fights.
I can’t criticize him for that…
To me, he looks bigger.. not sure if its fat, or muscle.. but definitely bigger in interviews ive seen

Like I said earlier, I don’t think MMA fights have anything to do with his shoulder problem. Whatever he wants to do in his free time is fine with me….just as long as he comes to to the ballpark to play hard …and SMART….everyday.
Bottom line is that I just don’t really like the guy all that much. I don’t hate him and I will cheer for him all the time because he happens to be on the Phillies. But I’ll also get more pissed off at some of his mistakes….more than I might from someone else on the team.

Shane has always traveled and really lived it up on his offseasons, check out this article from the 06 offseason http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20061207&content_id=1753562&vkey=news_mlb&fext=.jsp&c_id=mlb. Everyone is scrutinizing his offseason as the reason for this because we’ve seen a situation like this before in the past, a la Cole Hamels 2008 offseason (TV and Live Appearances, Radio and TV Commercials and very much in the spotlight) and how he had such a *blah* 2009 season he had. The fact is: Cole and Shane are different players. After that 2006 offseason, Shane went ahead and had 78R, 46RBI, ,281AVG and 37SB. His shoulder is a bit rusty, he’ll be fine.
