The Phillies are coming off a frustrating loss, and hope that Roy Halladay can stop the bleeding. He’s done it a few times this year. Halladay will open the series in San Francisco against Jonathan Sanchez and the Giants.
The bullpen has been shaky of late, however Halladay likes to give the bullpen a rest. Including his last few starts in Toronto, Halladay is 6-0 with 0.53 earned run average, four complete games, and three shutouts in his last six starts. The Giants have scored a few runs off Halladay thus far, but Halladay has proven that he can settle down and pitch a gem.
Ryan Howard is fresh off his 5-year, $125 million contract, and would like to show fans why he’s worth that amount. Howard has faced Sanchez 12 times in his career, collecting a .250 average against him.
Overall, Sanchez is starting the year off on the right foot. He’s been collecting strikeouts right and left. Sanchez has a tendency to become wild though. Working the count and drawing walks will be key for the Phillies against Sanchez.

How many straight fastballs down the middle will werth miss this yr? His head is in left field watching where the ball will land but he misses it… frustrating. Too bad the Phils didn’t get one last inning. They’ll make it close and most likely come up short with that bullpen in flux… when things are going bad, they really go bad. April has never been their month anyways…. May will be better month

This is practically a blueprint of what happened yesterday, with the roles reversed. Too bad I don’t envision SF squandering what looks to be a sure win. Can’t wait for May. Maybe getting some regulars back will help spark the club.

They need to score a run when they get a lead off double, and should get at least 2 when you have bases loaded with 1 out.
One of the frustrating things about this group of players is that you know they will struggle in April, June and early September.

Agreed Publius, working on his approach to lefties is one thing that will really make or break this contract. He’s gotta learn to lay off those sliders. Of course, if I’m not mistaken, that wasn’t even a slider that he missed this past inning.

I should correct what I said. Howard better be a lifetime Phillie – strikeouts or not. It’s not just the home runs, not just the power – it’s that he’s an icon in Philly and I’m glad that’s gonna continue.

We have to remind ourselves that we wouldn’t have expected this career from him back in 2004, even after he lead Double-A in home runs. In the big leagues, he’s made Thome and all the other prior first basemen seem like place holders until he got here. He may strike out against some lefties, but imagine how scared they are of facing him. Only a few hitters in baseball inspire that kind of fear.

Morris Buttermaker, I agree. I turned away from what I said before because this blog’s of, for and by Phans – people who love the Phils regardless of the outcome. Giants have beat the Phils seven out of ten in their last ten meetings in Frisco, and, even worse, the Phils have caught the Giants and D’Backs on hot streaks. There’s a whole season ahead – and at least five more years of the Big Piece ahead. Not a good game tonight, but I’m not complaning otherwise.

It’s widely believed that when Pac Bell/ SBC/ AT&T Ballpark was designed, the architects forgot to include bullpens. So after the stadium was built, they had to place the bullpens along the foullines because there was no where else to put them.
