Philadelphia Phillies (2-0) at Washington Nationals (0-2)

Kyle Kendrick, RHP vs. Craig Stammen, RHP

Time: 4:35, Nationals Park
Weather: Cloudy/Windy, 84
TV: Comcast SportsNet

If the Phillies have had a kryptonite the past few seasons, it’s been the month of April. But with the offense erupting for 19 runs in two victories over the Nationals, the Phillies are a win away from sweeping the season’s opening series for the first time since 2001. Yes, it’s been that long. Until Wednesday, Jimmy Rollins was the only current player left from that scrappy squad that nearly stole the NL East pennant. But then the Phils picked up Nelson Figueroa off waivers from the Mets – if nothing else, a positive omen for the Phillies heading into today’s finale.

With all the fuss over the guy who wears No. 34, the evolution of Kyle Kendrick was one of the quieter stories of the Phillies’ spring training, and this game should give us a better sense of just how far he has come from being a one-pitch wonder to a capable starter who can fall back on a change-up and cut fastball in addition to his sinker to get outs. No other Phillies pitcher had a better spring than Kendrick, who allowed only four earned runs in 24 2/3 innings for a mighty-impressive 1.42 ERA (though Jamie Moyer was a close second).

The Phillies’ top four hitters in the lineup – Jimmy Rollins, Placido Polanco, Chase Utley and Ryan Howard — have feasted on the Nationals’ pitching in the first two games, going 15-for-34 (.441).  Today’s dish is second-year starter Craig Stammen, who will have the advantage of unfamiliarity because the Phillies haven’t faced him.

Stammen, who went 4-7 with a 5.11 ERA in 2009,  is a control pitcher who relies on a curveball for strikeouts and probably wouldn’t be on many other teams’ rotations – much less occupy the No. 3 starter role. But that is the sorry state of the Nationals’ pitching staff.

Today’s Lineup: Rollins (SS), Polanco (3B), Utley (2B), Howard (1B), Werth (RF), Ibanez (LF), Victorino (CF), Schneider (C), Kendrick (P).

KenzingerYour Gameday Beer – Pabst Blue Ribbon

It just feels like a Pabst day.  It’s a 4:35 start today, meaning you’ll likely be getting off of work, sitting down on the couch, and enjoying the game.  That feels Pabst-like to me.  Don’t mistake it for a high-quality beer, but for a cheap case you can’t beat it.  On their Wikipedia page it says, “Whether the brand actually won an award in 1893 is unclear.” My guess is, it didn’t.  But enjoy it anyway, ice cold! – By Pat

GO PHILS!

I’m running out of work at 5:00pm should only have to follow the first few innings via the online scoreboard.

Not drinking Pabst but I am outta here in 20 minutes to watch the Fightins take out the brooms. We could start the season off 6-0. Don’t want to get ahead of myself but you can’t win championships in April but you sure can lose them….

    Great start KK!

Apparently KK didn’t deserve a spot in the rotation after all.

    Oh boy… :(

    This is not good.

That was godawful. BP for the Nats, those pitches were meatballs.

Sour start….plenty of time to rebound. Jitters………..hitters……and bullshitters.

Did not see it but on the internet it looks like he was trying to nibble too much. Plenty of time but he has to be more agressive.

triple, double, sharp liners – looks like most of the balls are getting pounded.

After settling down, he did well. 2 GO’s and a K, granted, it was on the pitcher, but oh well. Hopefully he can last 5 more innings.

Original Chuck P….yes, I have internet capability. Why? I can’t get the game anyway…it’s blacked out of mlb.com

The Nats feed was talking about how umps across the league have been criticized for squeezing pitchers early on… they mentioned Hamels.

Sniffing our way back into this thing… let’s go Phils! KK needs to set em down 1,2,3 and get our guys back up there.

    Chuck- check out http://www.myp2p.eu

Live streams… peer to peer. Might not be MLB.com quality but it’s close enough for the girls that I go out with. You’ll have to download stream torrent but it’s a sweet site to bypass the man.

    Best of all… no blackouts.

Back to our infuriating unproductiveness with runners in scoring position and less than 2 outs? Not even a base hit?

what’s up with ibanez? gosh i hope his days aren’t over just yet.

Damn. KK was throwing some pretty good pitches… but he’s getting hit hard anyway.

Well have fun being used for mop up duty KK.

I meant ineffectiveness…and those stranded runners are looking real good right now.

I apologize, I just HATE runners on second stranded and really hate runners on third stranded and then incredibly hate when THAT happens.

I’m starting to miss Joe the Pitcher.

Hey Kendrick, try throwing underhanded, you might have better luck. COME ON!

Batting practice for the Nats…..KK left his heart in Clearwater. NOT GOOD, at least today.

Chill out people… we’re still in the game. And Kendrick looked promising at one point. So, let’s see how this works out. He’ll have at least 3 more starts while Heavy B recovers.

Glad to see J.W came to play, piss poor coaching by Perlozzo there.

I just threw up a little.

ugh… Werth 3 for 3 and nothing to show for it. Come on, only down one – no problem, right?

Perlozzo didn’t really do a whole lot to stop him…

Thanks for the tip, Chuck P. I’ll try to figure out to install this thing when I have time….looks like a good alternative.

Look…we’re only down by 1 run. Have some phaith, people!!

That running mistake irks me to no end. Werth’s having a ridiculously good game with zero to show cause everyone around him is blowing it.

Polanco however is worth his weight in gold. Love him.

EVERYONE around him is blowing it?? That’s pretty unfair.

    ——

    nice sac bunt by Schneider!!

With the pitcher struggling to find the zone, there’s no one that I would rather have up than Chase Utley.

Wow a guy who can sac bunt, haven’t had one of those in a while.

Sacks jacked and now J-roll is up to the plate.

    Time to make them pay!

J-Roll!!!!! Nice job. And good baserunning guys.
