The conventional wisdom said the Phillies would be comfortably in first place in late May. It also said the Flyers would be on the golf course.

But in sports, the conventional wisdom is all too often wrong. Don’t believe me? Grab a copy of “The Wages of Wins” by David Berri, Martin Schmidt and Stacey Brook. The authors are all sports fans who happen to be economists, and they make compelling cases as to why many of the beliefs regarded as canon in sports aren’t borne out by the numbers. Their research is thorough, and as a bonus, the book is an enjoyable read, too.

While the last three games have been anything but enjoyable for Phils fans, with the team having been shut out twice and held scoreless in 28 of 29 innings, an economist would say that it simply can’t hold up. The silent Phillies offense (which has batted a mind-numbing .203 and scored 15 runs in the past seven games) will crackle back to life – it’s just a matter of when and where.

What’s not helping with that are ever-present injuries. In addition to Jimmy Rollins being back on the DL, Carlos Ruiz acknowledged today that his right shoulder has been bothering him for, oh, about five weeks. He’s not in the lineup tonight but hopes to return tomorrow. The question remains of when – or if – his shoulder will be right.

Joe Blanton takes the ball for the Phillies tonight, and if anyone has the credentials to pitch a gem in Flushing, it’s Big Joe, who is 2-0 with a 1.59 ERA in four starts against the Mets in his career.

Tonight’s Lineup: Victorino CF, Polanco 3B, Utley 2B, Howard 1B, Werth RF, Francisco LF, Valdez SS, Schneider C, Blanton P

Lately, runs for the Phillies have been slightly rarer than flying monkeys. So while you wait for the offense to come around, grab one (or more) of these – it has a huge winged monkey on the label. It’s a farmhouse ale with faint lemon and yeast flavors which go down smooth – a definite summer ale. I’m drinking one right now and recommend a savory crepe with it. – By Brian

people are tired of phillies winning NL east every year. it’s time for change – hope mets win NL east.

mets are in last place. lol. something we would never be. lol they stink like joey in ny mamas house.

@joey —— phils ARE in a slump , they have had a couple of these slumps every year the last three years. You see unlike mets fans we don’t panic because were proven winners. I listen to wfan all the time
and you guys jump on and off the bandwagon more than any fans in MLB. The phils played as bad as they can the last 2 weeks and look at the standings. When its all said and done we both know who’s winning the division , no matter what happens 2nite and tomorrow nite. Just have the balls to check in here as the season goes and you look up in september and see your 10 games back.

your funny joey the moron. mr. met choker. my best friend is a die hard mets fan. he goes to every game. he called today and said hahahah we won. then he said and you will the phillies will be in the world series. he said i can enjoy a few wins here and there. atleast he is honest.

you would of won the nl east if you did not have a team of chokers. thats all. the phillies every year go into slumps, blow saves and they manage to win. for starters nobody in this division is good. the mets, marlins, braves are average at best. nobody scares anybody.

Hey joey check your grammar , ever heard of a plural ? ( we will see who stink at the end ) ( phillies wont even make playoff this year )
ME TARZAN YOU JANE . Just what i would expect from a METS fan. We dont mind intelligent METS fans coming on here and having interesting knowledgeable baseball talk. The problem is when you make a statement like your 7:22 post you lose all credibility. Where were you the last 3 years ( 3 div. in a row ) 1 world championship , back to back world series appearances. If you don’t have anything good to bring to the conversation , please go away.

I know Ruiz is in a slump and probably needs a day off, but really…Scheider vs a lefty? Makes total sense.

all the talk about the park doesn’t mean anything. whether its citi field or citizens bank park , both teams have the same advantages and dis-advantages. its just senseless whining.

Joey how old are you? I hope under 9 for your sake.

Kinda like how a team uses injuries as an excuse for a crap season and another team despite injuries is in first place? Like that kind of sensless whining?

david wright with his 35th strikeout of the year already. He is the most overrated player in the NL. If he played in a small market nobody would know who he is.

you cant let guys like pagan and rod beat you. they both are average. rod will come back down to earth and be just a bad catcher.

@ ed r ——- i’m a phillies fan , i hate when mets fans complain when we hit home runs at CBP , like the dimensions are different when they come to the plate.

i would love to see the phillies sit rollins until after the all star break. we wont need him to win this pathetic division. that injury is tough to go away. have him ready for the stretch run.

these guys are just swinging at the first pitch with lazy flys. amazing. they have to get a little motivated. howard is making 125 million.

jeff : blanton is our #4 starter when everyone is healthy , his contract has nothing to do with the lee situation. Blanton has done ok for us as the #4. I agree about Reyes , i hate that little greaseball , his attitude sucks. Everyone can relax what ever happens 2nite and tomorrow won’t matter come september. The Schnider signing i dont love he’s a backup at best. We traded away our catching prospects in some of the moves made the last couple years. Dont worry boy’s once everyone comes back this team will still end up with 95 wins give or take a few.

to phuck the philthies : where was your punk ass the last three years ?
i’ll remind you ( watchin the playoffs like your team ). Let me guess ? your on the mets bandwagon now cause you beat the Yankees 2 of 3 and won game 1 of a meaningless series against the phillies in may . I listen to you met punks all the time on wfan , you guys change your opinion of the mets from week to week. Just have the balls to show your face here in sept when your 10 games back. PHILS WILL WIN THEYRE 4TH DIV. IN A ROW. I’ve got some more bad news for you , phils will be favored to win this division the next couple years. Its gonna be like the Braves of the ninety’s. Just be happy competing for the wildcard for a while.

Awww… Jeff… Mommy jokes? That’s so 1970′s of you. You forgot to make funof my spelling or grammar, though. That’s the usual order of operations for weak minded fools.

(Even I can admit that was a nice play by Valdez)

WAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH….You philthadephia fans are ridiculous. you think you are the best team ever now. Congrats you went to two world series recently and won one of them. You sucked before that. You have the same amount of world series as the mets.

It would be nice to have real baseball talk with intelligent met fans. But with names like PHUCK THE PHILTHIES I guess thats a pipe dream.

You know… I don’t care if the Mets OR Phillies are in 1st or last place when they play each other. The standings don’t matter when these two teams compete head to head.

If you don’t understand that, ask a Phila Eagles fan how they feel about playing the Cowboys.
