The conventional wisdom said the Phillies would be comfortably in first place in late May. It also said the Flyers would be on the golf course.

But in sports, the conventional wisdom is all too often wrong. Don’t believe me? Grab a copy of “The Wages of Wins” by David Berri, Martin Schmidt and Stacey Brook. The authors are all sports fans who happen to be economists, and they make compelling cases as to why many of the beliefs regarded as canon in sports aren’t borne out by the numbers. Their research is thorough, and as a bonus, the book is an enjoyable read, too.

While the last three games have been anything but enjoyable for Phils fans, with the team having been shut out twice and held scoreless in 28 of 29 innings, an economist would say that it simply can’t hold up. The silent Phillies offense (which has batted a mind-numbing .203 and scored 15 runs in the past seven games) will crackle back to life – it’s just a matter of when and where.

What’s not helping with that are ever-present injuries. In addition to Jimmy Rollins being back on the DL, Carlos Ruiz acknowledged today that his right shoulder has been bothering him for, oh, about five weeks. He’s not in the lineup tonight but hopes to return tomorrow. The question remains of when – or if – his shoulder will be right.

Joe Blanton takes the ball for the Phillies tonight, and if anyone has the credentials to pitch a gem in Flushing, it’s Big Joe, who is 2-0 with a 1.59 ERA in four starts against the Mets in his career.

Tonight’s Lineup: Victorino CF, Polanco 3B, Utley 2B, Howard 1B, Werth RF, Francisco LF, Valdez SS, Schneider C, Blanton P

Lately, runs for the Phillies have been slightly rarer than flying monkeys. So while you wait for the offense to come around, grab one (or more) of these – it has a huge winged monkey on the label. It’s a farmhouse ale with faint lemon and yeast flavors which go down smooth – a definite summer ale. I’m drinking one right now and recommend a savory crepe with it. – By Brian

    It’s groundhog day.

Team Choke can’t score off scrub pitcher.

Only a matter of time before Blanton blows up.

The Mets should throw Perez out there tomorrow. Get him an easy win.

yo PHUCK : who’s whining , were not . Your 8:30 post says it all. Only losers bring the history thing up . All that matters is recent history and the future. So untill the mets win something ; YOU GOT NOTHING !!!
Just make sure you here in september so i can say i told you so. Secondly you bring up the last 3 years like its nothing , baseball is all about stats, and the phils were the 1st team in the NL to go back to back world series since the big red machine of the mid-70′s. After this year it will be 4 div. in a row , next year 5 , just accept it and you’ll get over it easier.

I thought Manuel was a guy who knew hitters…what is he and Milt doing? Seems like a whole lot of nothing.

So Pat, Mike? Fellas? Any reason you let idiots especially with names like that on this site?

JB has 4 walks, 3 hits – in less than 5 innings
    Missing badly tonight.

Brooks – I think they know we boost the post count. Do you realize how much more they can make in advertising when they can show THIS MUCH activity on the site? Its simple economics…. and smart, too. Not to mention that, if you look at all of us (Phils fans AND otherwise) objectively, some of this stuff is side-splittingly funny.

YOU MET PUNKS CRACK ME UP , puffing you chest out on may 26th. Read my 8:43 post and get back to me when you have something to say thats relevent. We have owned your asses the last 3 years , and will continue to in the next couple years. Just ask yourselves this question : if you could swap the phils and mets rosters would you ?
Thought so : I’ll say it again make sure your PUNK ASSES are here to talk in september losers.

miked63 – Bear in mind that if our rosters WERE swapped, you’d still root for the Phillies… Franceur, Reyes, Bbarajas… ALL of them.. well… MAYBE not Perez. He’s universally despised.

Brooks – I do… to me, its all in fun. I don’t think I say anything TOO bad… and even if I get a little raunchy, its all in fun. I trade jabs like this with my friends. NY has rivalries that don’t involve other cities… Mets/Yankees, Giants/Jets, Knicks/Nets, Rangers/Devils/Islanders…

AND… maybe unlike some others, I actually HAVE shown up here to congratulate the Phillies when they win a title. I did in 08 and 09. I don’t think I knew about this place in 07… and that was probably the most painful. 07 prepped us for 08. 09 was an injury-filled disaster we all expected it to be.

I’m sure I’ll be here to congratulate the Phillies this year, too.

At least Werth managed to fly out. Howard could’ve sac’d in Victorino…

One would think that when you are having issues scoring then you would be more aggressive on the base paths. I think that is the second or third time I have said this in a week.

Geez – we have scored in 1 of the last 33 innings. How many times will we leave a runner on third w/ less than 2 outs?

howard is a waste. you can fight with me about this forever. he is a average fielder at best. he strikes out more then phuck the philthies at a bar. 125 million is crazy. should of let him play out his contract. we will be swept in this series.

The Phillies have scored in one inning in their last 37.

THEY HAVE GONE THEIR LAST 36/37 INNINGS WITHOUT SCORING A RUN.

we’ll have to stay FLYERED UP for another week , hopefully by the time the stanley cups over the phils will get a hit with someone in scoring position. This slump is worse than what we usually see. I think CHARLIE needs to start doing something to fire this team up. Problem is all these guys are laid back like the manager. In times like these we need a pete rose type to do something to get this team going. —- IM GETTING PISSED OFF NOW ——- enough’s , enough —-they look like zombies ! GET YOUR HEAD OUT OF YOUR ASSES !

I do think Ole Cholly will soon be chewing some ass. The offense needs a wake-up call. This cannot continue much longer.

Great announcing moment during Magic-Celts game. As they go to commercial and replay Redick’s 3 pointer, Mark Jackson dramatically:

    “Great vision by JJ Redick”

    GREAT VISION!!

    I hate all sports announcers.

Kind of hard to score runs and win ballgames when you can’t use binoculars, huh?

I realize I’m saying this now, with Howard flailing at the plate, and someone can feed it to me along with my hat if he’s hot come August: but I’d have kept Lee, given up Howard, and reoriented the offense around Utley and Werth.

Having a streaky, if potent offense, is one thing if the pitching is there. But, I’m sorry, there’s just not enough depth on this staff.
