The conventional wisdom said the Phillies would be comfortably in first place in late May. It also said the Flyers would be on the golf course.

But in sports, the conventional wisdom is all too often wrong. Don’t believe me? Grab a copy of “The Wages of Wins” by David Berri, Martin Schmidt and Stacey Brook. The authors are all sports fans who happen to be economists, and they make compelling cases as to why many of the beliefs regarded as canon in sports aren’t borne out by the numbers. Their research is thorough, and as a bonus, the book is an enjoyable read, too.

While the last three games have been anything but enjoyable for Phils fans, with the team having been shut out twice and held scoreless in 28 of 29 innings, an economist would say that it simply can’t hold up. The silent Phillies offense (which has batted a mind-numbing .203 and scored 15 runs in the past seven games) will crackle back to life – it’s just a matter of when and where.

What’s not helping with that are ever-present injuries. In addition to Jimmy Rollins being back on the DL, Carlos Ruiz acknowledged today that his right shoulder has been bothering him for, oh, about five weeks. He’s not in the lineup tonight but hopes to return tomorrow. The question remains of when – or if – his shoulder will be right.

Joe Blanton takes the ball for the Phillies tonight, and if anyone has the credentials to pitch a gem in Flushing, it’s Big Joe, who is 2-0 with a 1.59 ERA in four starts against the Mets in his career.

Tonight’s Lineup: Victorino CF, Polanco 3B, Utley 2B, Howard 1B, Werth RF, Francisco LF, Valdez SS, Schneider C, Blanton P

Lately, runs for the Phillies have been slightly rarer than flying monkeys. So while you wait for the offense to come around, grab one (or more) of these – it has a huge winged monkey on the label. It’s a farmhouse ale with faint lemon and yeast flavors which go down smooth – a definite summer ale. I’m drinking one right now and recommend a savory crepe with it. – By Brian

Jeff you are making the rest of us look bad. Either go away and come back when you aren’t acting like this, or wise up. Stop with the racist crap.

I think depth isn’t a problem. Your number 3 and 4 starters will often give up 4 or 5 runs. We’re just sitting in one of these legendary Fightin hitting droughts.

This is the team fans are sending to the All Star game? I need to start voting everyday for Wright,Bay,Jose, and Barajas so that the Mets will have home field advantage at the World Series.

please dont do that mets2010. we need to win for home field advantage in the series. sending those scrubs we lose

Thanks Jeff. I believe you. I have never known you to go that route before. Pardon me for jumping on you but I don’t want to see any of that here.

met fans will be calling mike the fat man on wfan when rod comes back down to earth. crying like they do. the mets will go right back into a funk soon enough. thats what they do.

Exhibit A of why fans should not get to vote for the ASG…Burrell 4th in DH voting…really? Ridiculous.

Why is everyone knocking the Mexican leagues? There is a pitcher in the Majors named Raul Valdez who played in Mexico last year, and is a very effective innings-eather. Oh wait, Phillies fans know him real well…he shut their team down out of the pen for a three inning save last night.

Kind of hard to score runs and win ballgames when you can’t use binoculars, huh?

This is truly the worst in-game blog. A bunch of teenage TrollMets and no intelligent back-and-forth between Phillies fans.

I guess I’ll try again next year.

Off to one of the 100 other options.

You didnt say Pagan should be in the mexican league?

    16 scoreless innings

@Ed R., Burrell is 4th in voting because most Phillies “fans” still think he is on the team.

Love how you all hate the Mets, but still find the time to listen to their radio station.

Jeff why would someone post with you name and say that pagan should be in the mexican league? You obviously said that one

We need J-Roll back in a big way. And it would be nice if Utley or the big man could get hot and pick us up during this stretch.

I can’t wait for us to break out of this offensive slump. This is hard to watch.

Are we headed for third shutout in four games?????

yo mets 2010nl chumps ——- read my 8:43 and 8:51 posts and get back to me with something to say. They say it all . Let me give you a reality check. Whatever happens in this series your still looking at our asses. This is the worst stretch the phils will have all year and your still not in 1st place. Watch what happens from june on . Heres a little more history for all you mets fans. No matter what happens tomorrow the phils will have a better record this year on may 27th then they have had the last 3 years. Look up what this team does the last 3 years from june 1st to sept 30th —-oh and i would tell you to look up record comparisons past sept but you guys haven’t played many games past sept. sorry my bad.

    Nice inning by Bastardo.

That’s good to see, at least.

Tell you what, you could have scripted the 6th inning. I did. The runners allowed by JB, the hit Durbin allowed for another run – the top of the 7th – if there was not a WP, the Schneid would have hit into a DP but instead, we got to see Rauull make the final out.

Hey Michael….What MLB team has the most losses in MLB history?

@miked63, Ive had plenty to say thats relevant since your two posts. I’ve said it before and I will say it again: Kind of hard to score runs and win ballgames when you can’t use binoculars, huh?

Your two posts at 8:43 and 8:51 were so informative and well given, that you should really think about becoming a history professor or a baseball historian.

If choking and history are your forte, look at Figgy, Schneider, and Wilson Valdez. If your history theory proves true, I’m sure glad they are now members of the team that you root for.

can ryan just give back that money. he is so overrated. should of traded him after this season. got a few players for him. amazing how bad he looks at the plate.

It’s been a long time since I’ve seen a Phils lineup look this lost — even during our offensive slumps, it hasn’t been this bad.

    I’m keeping the faith, though.

A crooked number is coming…one of these innings they’re going to bust out for like seven runs.

He’s got no clue at the plate right now. Swinging to protect, at best.

Maybe our fans will start a blog after tonight because we’ve sure been bailing on our team the last few years. Who knows? Maybe we’ll start winning and become frontrunners once more

Haha, I just made a comment about how we are not allowed to criticize Utley on these boards. And I went to post it. And it told me it could not be processed.

yo phuck ……… come on dude thats all you got ? pitiful . I explained at 8:43 only losers bring up crap like that , read it again . You met trolls haven’t given me any good response to my posts yet. I’ve been smokin your asses all nite. Truth hurts brother , i want all of you to read my posts again. —— ok i’ll humor you with your little 9:51 post , phils have been around since the 1800′s , when did mets start 1964? Its a meaningless statistic nobody cares. —- I give you facts and all mets fans give me is childish little jabs.

Bullpen getting quick outs. Nice. Or does everyone just want to go home?

  • Posts: 0 PHUCK THE PHILTHIES

Of course we all know it’s possible for a catcher to lay down a sign, for the bullpen to call up to the dugout and for the dugout to flash the signal to the batter before the pitcher throws the ball. Keep in mind the pitcher has to have his eye off the pitcher throwing the pitch to get the sign even though the pitcher throws the ball mere seconds after the sign is flashed.

Actually they will be in 2nd or 3rd tonight after this laugher….but nice try…get your facts straight

  • Posts: 0 Phuh Cube Itchez

Here’s a fact, mike…. how’s this game going for you? How about the last 3? Are they gonna add ant scores from the last 3 years to any of the last 4 games (including tonight) to give you a win? When we’re discussing recent team history, you may like to post your rant. This, right here, is a blog post about tonight’s game. Tonight, your team sucks llama sphincter.

Call it what you want, but this showing is foreboding and scary for this team. To completely fall off the radar offensively is reason for serious concern about this team. Do not kid yourself.

Well there’s no frontrunning mets blog yet, but if we keep winning we’ll get one, my dad told me that.

The whole team has gotten big heads since beating Pittsburgh 12-2. They’ve scored about 12 runs since that game a week ago. They have a lot of lazy stupid at-bats. Nobody goes to the plate with a plan. They just go up there and hack away. Polanco seems to be the only guy who just tries to make contact and get on base.

Burr, its just a temporary swoon. Much as he’s kinda sounding foolish, miked63 brings up a good point: Phillies record at this point is better than the last few years and look how they ended for you. Phillies are a 2nd half team. They are notorious for slow starts. This year, they have gotten off to a better start than previous years but they aren’t a better team… so the law of averages had to come into play at some point.

As a Mets fan, even after 2 consecutive shut-outs of your team, I am still as confident as ever that he Phillies will be on top of the divicion at the end of the season. I’ll go so far as to predict a repeat of last year’s World Series… and the Yankees are in about the same need to turn things up as the Phillies. Unfortunately (for you), I predict that repeat to run through the WS and I will unfortunately have to listen to Yankee fans (including my wife) gloat about #29…

We’ll just let all the Met fans have their moment.

You all know you’re getting lucky with the Phils in an epic offensive slump.

You all know the Phils are going to bust out big time soon. And you’re all hoping and praying it’s not against your team.

And you all know in your slimy, little Met fan hearts that the Phils are the better team. Deep down you know it.

So we’ll lay low for now and let you gloat all you want — because it won’t last.

    And you all know it.

By the way, its really cute that you philly blog losers refer to met fans as Trolls. Met fans may be trolls now, but Philly Fans will always be front runners.

Us NY’ers are having tons of fun with the fact that you are a Hockey Town all of the sudden. Ride the coattails of a hot goaltender who will have a GAA twice his weight next season. BlackHawks in 5.

You know us mets fans only come in when we’re winning. As long as we catch or pass you in the division we’ll be around. If we play like the chokers we’ve been in recent history we’ll slither away quietly like the slimy snakes that we are.
