Blue Jays/Phils Series Moved to Philly

News, Posts
Due to the security concerns of the G20 Summit in Toronto the same weekend, MLB is changing the site for the Blue Jays/Phillies series from June 25-27.
Kind of cool that the Phillies would get three more “home games” even though they would not be considered as such. We also get to see the DH used in an NL park. The Blue Jays will be the home team for the weekend set and bat last.

So who would get the money from the tickets?
Will it be enough to sign Werth???

Who do you think they are most worried about – Phils fans or players? Wonder if the remaining Nats home games against the Phils will be moved to CBP – heard the Phils fans were a bit inhospitable last time around.

They are the home team, there will be a DH and they bat in the Home half of the inning.

Very, very, very cool. It’s nice to know that they won’t have to deal with traveling up there and all the related hassel. Plus they won’t have to play in that dump, the Rogers Centre. They’re going to be doing limited, easy travel that month. After returning from Atlanta, 16 home games will sandwich trips to the Red Sox and Yankees. Lots of home cooking and no travel fatigue should be beneficial as the weather heats up.

Also, will MLB make us use the top level of the bullpen??? The visitors dugout? How far does this thing go? Will they play “O, Canada” before the game???????

This was kinda the idea to spice up Interleague Play ….
play by the other team’s rules … play by AL rules in NL parks to give the fans something different to see
I would imagine they’ll keep the clubhouse and dugouts etc the same
They play O Canada everytime they play a canadien team i think

I say they switch everything. I also think they should hop on a plane and fly a circle around Philly just so it feels like an away game.

Don’s right about the dugouts, anthem etc. based on when Houston was the “away” team in Houston for a game or two last year.
I would also love it if they played by the other league’s rules for every interleague game.
The other question is ticket prices, allocation, etc….Phillies.com doesn’t have it yet. I assume all jays ticket holders will have the choice of comparable tickets, etc. but don’t they have a ton more seats at RC center?

It will be a fun weekend at Citizens Bank Parque. I just hope we don’t have to pay in Canadian money. Will the signs around the stadium be switched to Canadian spellings. Will we have to be on our best behaviour? And can we pay with cheques? Will the distances be changed to metres? And beers will come in half litres?
What a great advantage for the Phillies. I look forward to attending the games.

D’oh, I meant to say Citizen’s Banque Parque.

Alright, the jays website says that the ST holders have first right to purchase but that all other ticket holders have to go through the Phillies regular avenues to get tickets. There should be 33000 tickets available.
BTW:
6/25 – 705 game
6/26 – 135
6/27 TBA

RC Center has roughly 6,000 more seats than CBP.
I don’t think switching dugouts makes a bit of difference, same thing with the bullpens. There is no actual advantage or disadvantage, from a strategic standpoint to either of those things.
Not like in hockey where being on the home or away bench does actually play a role in the outcome of a game.
Will be interesting to see the Phillies DH for that series, kinda sucks that they don’t get the last at bat but oh well.

Here’s one: Will the Phillies wear their away uniforms?
That would be awesome.

They play both anthems regardless of location when a Canadian team is playing. Also this sucks for Roy Halladay who deserves the standing ovation in Toronto! He was our best player for years and its really sad that we wont get to see him this year.

Jays fan, as it would stand right now, Halladay would not be on schedule to pitch in that series.

I would think the Phillies would wear their away uniforms. Unless the Jays decide to wear their Black unis.

Ed, the black uniforms are their home uniforms, which means they would wear white pants, which means the Phillies would wear their aways.

The following changes have just be announced for the series.
1. The Phillies will be the road team, will wear their road uniforms and bat 1st.
2. The Blue Jays will be the home team, will wear their home uniforms and bat 2nd.
3. Since it is a Blue Jays home game, the DH will be used.
4. All fans who purchase french fries will be required to put mayonaisse on them. Since Philadelphia is east of the Ottawa River, poutine will be served.
5. All fans must be polite, courteous and respectful of others. Littering and other serious offences will not be tolerated.
6. Home runs will be measured in metres.
7. All fans must sing Oh Canada word for word, with the middle verse in French.
8. For the weekend, Phillies fans can appreciate Joe Carter’s home run for the amazing and dramatic feat it truly was.
9. 50% of the music played at the stadium must be Canadian, 10% must be provinical. Get used to the Tragically Hip, Rush and Bare Naked Ladies. Likewise, clips from Trailer Park Boys, Kids in the Hall and Degrassi Junior High will be shown on the scoreboard to fire up the crowd.
10. Throughout the weekend, the Phillies will be known as the Rough Riders. The Blue Jays will be known as the Roughriders.

yea I would imagine Phillies will wear their ROAD uniforms..
…
Interleague Play was supposed to bring Ken Griffey Jr.. to every park ..
it was supposed to have fans be able to see their NL Central team play in Fenway Park ..
and give us the RedSox vs Cubs in each historic stadium, etc.. . . .
instead the keep marching out these fake-rivalry games… Phillies used to get to go to Baltimore, but now the RedSox come here, since the nats and O’s are rivals.. etc..
its all the same every year..
playing the RedSox every year is cool.. but I want to see us play the Rangers in Arlington ….. and the Mariners are home, etc

@ Don M, I agree with you. I don’t understand why we have to play the same teams every year in the AL. I too wish the Phils could go to Arlington or to the Royals or whatever. That would be cool.
That being said, I think it’s nice the Phils get an extra few games at home…don’t understand though why they couldn’t have just moved the G20 summit to Montreal. They don’t play baseball there anymore.
(Just kidding!)

Heather and Don: I hope you did realize we get to play the Twins and the Indians…
Fans from any NL team would love interleague games against:
Yankees
Red Sox
Twins
Indians
I can’t complain.

I have not seen anything about the revenue sharing. I imagine the Blue Jays get a hefty share of it. And that is why they agreed to the games being at a non-neutral site. I imagine they were offered to play the games in like Milwaukee or Houston, or some dome stadium, or maybe a site like Pittsburgh, where neither team would have an advantage, but there would be few fans in attendence. Having the games at CBP is going to bring over 100,000 people for the weekend, and will bring in a few million dollars. It makes sense for the Jays to agree to it for the money.
I am surprised the Orioles still agree to the fake rivalry with the Nationals. They take two teams that get 8,000 a game and combine them for 2 series to get 10,000 a game. When the Phillies played in Baltimore, it used to be packed with Phillies fans. I’m surprised the O’s don’t want a slice of that pie.

@Manny…those are exciting games, yes. I guess my issue with interleague play is that I would like it to be “fair” if that makes any sense. I have no problem with it if all teams in the division faced the same opponents. But I think it’s kinda unfair to have certain teams in the division face the Orioles instead of the Yanks/Sox…if the NL East comes down to one or two games, and one of the teams faced the Orioles for 6 games while the Phils faced the Sox for 6 games and the Yanks for 3…that strikes me as a tad unfair.
On the flip side, as you stated, the games should be very exciting as the Yanks, Sox, and Twins are always fun to watch…and hopefully we can beat up on the Jays and the Indians.

By my quick math, the overhead profit on beer alone that weekend should be more than enough to afford a 3 year – $55M deal for Jayson Werth. But I could be wrong…

yea we played the Royals once…
we haven’t played at Jacob’s/Progressive Field in Cleveland (that I can remember)
I know the Rangers played here a few years ago…and we played in Oakland once , etc…
But the past few years we’ve played 6 games against the Blue Jays
Im not complaining that we play the Yankees and the RedSox ….but the reason for interleague play was to see all the teams in major league baseball …
as it is now.. I think its ridiculous that we play the Nationals 18 times, but other NL teams only 6 times..
Out of a 162 game season, you should get to play Home and Away vs. every team …. maybe with the AL vs. NL .. it just switches so if we host the twins this year, next year we go to Minnesota… the year after, they come here again, etc.
The phillies played in Fenway in 2006… they came here the last 3 years.. and now we’re back there this year .. there is just no rhyme or reason to the Interleague Schedule

I see the point you guys are making… they should vary it a little more.. mix it up so that it’s a little more fair. Though I’m pretty sure that whoever makes the schedules take all this into account… We get to play tough teams like Twins, Red Sox, and Yankees in interleague play… but we also get to face the Nats 18 times per season or so to make up for it. In the end, it seems that it all balances out… at least for the Phillies.

AND if we upped the price per ticket & over-charged for the Molson’s then maybe we’d have enough to make it a 4 yr deal w/a 1 yr option. What’d ya think? Now Gaze NJ you’re trying to start trouble . . . and nobody took the bait.

I thought it was funny Gaze. And the idea does have possibilities.
Now if we can just keep our bretheren to the north from kidnapping our star (their former) star pitcher AND we can figure out a way to keep the Messiah of the Right Field we might be able to make it to the WS again.

Actually the Toronto fans are fuming.
http://www.drunkjaysfans.com/2010/05/summit-series-heads-to-philadelphia.html
Their feeling is that the Jays gave away this series for money. And that money is more important than their fans. The Jays actually have a pretty devoted fan base. They are just small. But there are people from all over Canada who follow the Jays, and many were planning on flying in for this series.

They’ll have to wait till 2011:
“Beeston also said that the Blue Jays have requested that the 2011 regular season schedule include a trip to Toronto by the Phillies in order to allow the Blue Jays to properly honour Halladay, who left the club as a free agent this winter. The commissioner’s office is expected to go along with the request.”

Comments from a Jays fan:
“I am glad that I hadn’t bought tickets to this one. Beeston says that anyone who bought single game tickets to this game will receiver a voucher!!!!
A f’n voucher! Not a refund? I would be pissed. “Sorry, we moved the most anticipated interleague series in Jays history to Philly. But hey, here’s a voucher for a game against the Baltimore Orioles.”
Ri-fu*king-diculous. I am sorry for all you Beeston lovers, but Beeston is too bush league to be the President of a MLB club in the 21st century.”
/// they were really looking forward to this series…

a 3 game set to Toronto doesn’t even gaurantee that Halladay pitches there anyway..
when we have the Yankees and Twins as two series before the Blue Jays … those are the series you need to set your pitching matchups for

Interesting paragraph on why the Phils should trade a second minor league pitcher for Alex Gordon. He could replace Dobbs in 2011 and if he pans out then replace Polanco. I’ve seen dumber ideas.

This is GREAT! Honestly, what a blessing to literally get 3 extra home games (I don’t care that we don’t bat last, they are home games however you cut it) but I actually feel kinda bad for the Blue Jays… a franchise with little hope considering the division they play in, only one season removed from their beloved ace departing. I can only imagine how disappointed they must be as they won’t be able to see Roy pitch at least once more on their home field.
If I’m phillies management I would honestly offer some number of tickets to Jays season ticket holders and invite them to our park to see Roy pitch. Call me crazy, but it might be a nice gesture and could be great PR publicity for the club following the “Don’t tase me bro!” fallout. It would be a really nice thing to do.

I’m surprised some Mets fan hasn’t chimed in here to say that the Phils have gotten an unfair advantage with these three extra home games.

it was heart breaking to have to lose doc as he was one of our draft picks and played in toronto for 12 years. at least he went to a class organization. everyone in toronto is a phillies fan this year because we’re all hoping doc gets a ring. this seriously sucks.
