UPDATE: 12:00pm, Sad news today that former Phillies great Robin Roberts passed away today at the age of 83. Our thoughts and condolences go out to his and the entire Phillies family.
In his first six starts wearing red and white, Roy Halladay has been everything Phillies fans could have hoped for, with three complete games, two shutouts and a 1.47 ERA. But as spine-tingling as those performances were, they were just a prelude of things to come.
Not to diminish what Halladay has done this season, but he hasn’t faced the kind of lineup that inspires fear – until today. The three most talented teams he has faced so far have been the Mets, Giants and Braves – teams that have their share of hitters but that aren’t loaded the way the Cardinals are from one to eight (or one to seven and nine, in Tony La Russa’s wacky mind).
Today, Halladay receives his most intriguing test of the season so far. It’s too early to call it an October preview or anything along those lines, but the result will give fans to consider as the early season unfurls itself.
After Juan Castro tweaked his hamstring Wednesday night, Wilson Valdez starts at shortstop today. Injuries have hit the Phils hard this season, whether through bad luck (Jimmy Rollins) or stupidity (Ryan Madson). While it still is in first place, if this team is really going to take off, it is going to have to get its best talent on the field at the same time. The bad news is that is certainly not going to happen for a while, at the very least.

Your gameday beer:
It’s the King of Beers, Budweiser.
Beechwood-aged, it’s your all-American lager, a little bitter and a lot of simple. We’ll drink a few on this beautiful afternoon in honor of our guest from St. Louis.
Enjoy the beer with a hamburger.
Go Phillies!

I cannot help but think that the young starters have learned something from Roy Halladay. Perhaps today he will teach them another valuable lesson. Let’s hope so.

Just dropped off my wife and daughter at work in center city, was stopped at light in front of four seasons hotel. I can’t believe how many people were there with ball to get signed by cardinals. Saw pujois, holiday and if think wainright they to my little time there wouldn’t sign.People are nuts to beg them to sign.

Yeah, taking 3 of 4 would be awesome today! I would argue that the Nats have a better offense then the Mets, at least right now and possibly better than the Giants.
These games have been playoff like and happy to see Hamels and KK do so well and do it at home!

Good pitching is contagious. I’m feeling good with Roy on the hill and a chance to rather quietly take 3 of 4 from an excellent Cardinals team.

I love Chooch as much as the next fan, but he should be replaced on the Ashburn Award.

Certainly a sad day for Phillies baseball. Maybe Doc can go out and throw a CG in his honor.

Unrelated, anyone else starting to really like T Mac’s homerun call? I don’t know if it’s the call or just the homeruns that I’m enjoying.

Ok guys, we got a game with the Cardinals today. And that only means one thing. Bad news for the Cardinals.

A few quick points to bring up before the game.
At what point do we admit that the Nationals are not terrible? I am sure they will hit some rough spots throughout the season. But as of right now, they are playing some pretty good baseball. And the Marlins have a pretty good lineup. As demonstrated by the 4 runs they scored the second Halladay left the game.
It looks like the sentiment is gaining traction.

Bobby D … “That ball is….. GONE!” I like it too. Much better than Yankees Michael Kay’s “Ssssssseee ya!” (sounds like a serpent)

Great first inning by the Phillies, scored 3 runs and forced Lohse to throw a lot of pitches.
Michael Kay is one of the worst announcers in baseball. I lived in Japan when Matsui first signed with the Yankees, and they would show every Yankees game live in the morning. I had the displeasure of listening to Michael Kay call the games. He is brutal.

can someone watching tell me if ibanez should have scored on the ruiz double?

They did not show enough replays to tell if Ibanez could have scored. It seemed like he could have at least tried to score. But they did not show any replays.

I like McCarthy a lot. I think he is a great announcer. He calls the game very well. Honestly, my only problem with him is that he is too professional sometimes. With the great announcers, you can hear the disgust in their voice following a horrible play, or a backbreaking homerun. One of my favorite Harry Kalas calls was in 2005, when the Phillies blew a series against the Astros, and Craig Biggio hit a huge 3 run homer off of Billy Wagner. And you can tell just how pissed off harry was.

Hey Mo, I was at that game. You should have heard how pissed off I was. But I know what you’re saying. Don’t be too objective.

That lost to the Astros was as brutal as a loss could be. That one hurt for a while.
I am starting to think the Halladay guy is pretty good.

For those of you not able to see the game, the Ibanez homer was absolute shot. 5-6 deep into the second level in right field, over the budweiser sign.

Ibanez.. with two out … should have scored on Ruiz’s double … but maybe he spun his wheels, or something.. the ball ended up tight down the RF line
The error charged to Valdez, should have been charge to Ryan Howard. . . it was a high throw, that Howard got some leather on, but he was stretching too early.. if he waited to judge the throw, and then reached up.. it would’ve been an easy play In My Opinion
….
I like Tmac .. that “GONE!” gives me goosebumps
I HAAAATTTTEEEE Sarge though, he dumbs down the entire broadcast when he’s on, and to me makes it almost unwatchable … they should stick him to Pre-game and Post-game only, because he brings NOTHING to the booth
Tmac and Wheels on TV
Franzke and LA on Radio
Sarge… eating ribs with the Bull and Gary Maddux

Ibanez makes up for his non-Run Scored earlier.. he’s starting to swing a hot bat!!!
CARLOS RUIZ.. is currently batting .304 .. and is he leading the team in On Base Percentage too??
If he had better RBI numbers, he could be in line for an All-Star appearance… but that will go to Brian McCann, and a Molina instead

Don, CHOOCH is leading the NATIONAL LEAGUE (not just the team) in OBP!! Crazy.
I’m voting for him for the All-star. Yadier isn’t THAT great… and McCann isn’t hot enough offensively to get my vote.

and that should keep Roy in the game for the 7th!

I thought the Howard/Valdez error could have gone either way. Both players made mistakes on it. Howard took a strange stretch on it. It’s been a real misadventure in the field for both teams today. It’s pretty windy in Philly today. I spent a few minutes this morning tracking down my trash cans.
I don’t hate Sarge the way some people do, but they do need to limit his time. Give him like 2-3 innings a game. I’ve met him a few times, and he is such a great guy. I can’t get too upset with him.

@Don: Ibanez didn’t score because they didn’t send him in… it wasn’t HIS decision… and I think it ended up being a good one..

not “ended up” cause we didn’t score after that play… but at the time, it looked like they would’ve had him out at home.

Yadier has a cannon for an arm though. His career Caught Stealing % is 47%.
I’ve always been a big Chooch fan. He brings a lot of intangibles to the field. The pitchers love him. And he comes up huge in the post season. It’s great to see his stats reflecting what he brings to the team this year. Tuesday night was the 2nd time I’ve been at a game when Ruiz had a walk-off homer.

@Morris… I was there for another walk-off… in 08, Game 3 of the WS…. I love Chooch! He’s getting all my votes! ( He think he even homered in that game as well)

Franske and LA were making a case for Chooch getting an All-Star appearance.
I’ve got the radio on….no video…..and it sounds like either Halladay is getting ZERO close calls….and is just not as sharp as he usually is.
Wow…..what a call by Charlie to leave him in and get that out. What respect this guy has earned!

I knew Pujols wouldn’t go down quietly….
Oh well. In any case, 7 innings, 2 runs is OUTSTANDING.

Amazing that 7 innings, 8 hits, 2 ER, 3 walks and 9 K’s can be considered not one of Doc’s better starts.
That is how awesome he is.
Glad Charlie didn’t take Roy out, just shows the respect he has for him.

It’s a combination of both. Halladay is not as sharp as he normally is, and he is not getting the calls from the umps. He had Pujols rung up earlier, and the ump did not make the call. It was a perfect pitch.
Good call by Cholly there. I’d let Halladay pitch tomorrow too.

Halladay’s arm is going to fall off by august if charlie keeps making him pitch 110+ pitches everyday. He doesn’t have to go at least 7 innings every time he starts when you have a five run lead and a high pitch count take him out. This and the game against San Francisco is a joke.

Chuck, when you go to the All-Star ballot… and see that not one of the names stands out this year (McCann who’s the best one by far isn’t off to a great start)… you’ll see that voting for Chooch isn’t that unconventional… Perhaps the most deserving catcher right now is Soto from the Cubs, but bleh… never really liked the guy enough.

The first run Halladay gave up was not his fault. Werth misplayed a ball, and it was scored a triple.
Werth just had a classic Werth atbat. he looked terrible the first few pitches, and then hit a double.
