Philadelphia Phillies (26-19) at New York Mets (24-23)
Cole Hamels (5-2, 3.92 ERA) at Mike Pelfrey (6-1, 2.86 ERA)

Not sure there is really all that much to say in this spot. The Phillies need to score runs, and that’s all there is to it. They haven’t scored a run since Sunday and haven’t scored a meaningful run since Friday! They’ve beaten up Mike Pelfrey once this year and they’ll need to do it again to break out of this awful slump they’re in.
Cole Hamels toes the rubber in the quest for his 6th victory. He’s been very good lately, however, the Mets are a pesky club at home that can make it hell on opposing pitchers. Just ask Moyer and Blanton. The love to wreak havoc on the basepaths, so Cole might be firing to first base a lot tonight with that pickoff move.
Offensively, it’s not as if the Phils aren’t getting guys on base. They’ve managed 24 hits the last three games combined. It’s just what they do with those guys on base that is so unsavory. This trend of stranding runners is a bit unnerving to say the least. They’ll need a pick-me-up tonight.
Tonight’s Lineup: Victorino CF, Polanco 3B, Utley 2B, Howard 1B, Werth RF, Ibanez LF, Ruiz C, Valdez SS, Hamels P
Your Gameday Beer – Yards Extra Special Ale
I’m going with my favorite beer for tonight’s must win. Yeah, I said it – must win. Yards ESA is a hearty amber ale with a malt body and aromatic hop finish. It’s got some kick to it, 6.0% by volume, but is one of the best beers around, in my opinion. Plus, it’s made in Philly, so what’s not to love. Enjoy it with a porterhouse and mashed potatoes and be sure to scream at the TV all night. The Phillies need all the help they can get. – By Pat

thanks for the update tommy. you smooth talker. i will go on record and say within two weeks the phillies will be up by 8 games on the mets. mets caught the phillies at a good time and the brew crew and padres will destroy that average team. the mets are very average. there pitching is pathetic and bay is overrated. there in last for a reason. they will go back to there loooooosing ways again. then we can listen to the met fan cry on wfan. like always.

lets get this game going !!!!!
heres a little pre-game stat —- last year going into june 1st ( 48 games)
phils were 28 & 20. Right now thru 45 games phils are 26 & 19 . Even after the worst week you’ll ever see this team play theyre right where they usually are. I’m not worried. Look up howards, utleys , rollins ( need him back a.s.a.p ) and companys career numbers from june on and you’ll feel better. This team will win 93 to 95 games , book it !
Met fans can say what they want , no matter what happens tonite , mets only shot is wildcard , and they know it. Mets do have shot at wildcard , but i think it will come down to last day of season. I dont think the mets are a 90 win team. The NL EAST is the only division in baseball with every team at or above 500 going into tonite. Good luck met fans , how great would it be to play each other in the playoffs !

miked63 – I couldn’t agree with you more… it would be nuclear but it would be a LOT of fun if they could meet in the NLCS.

Jayson “Take Your Hands Off Me You Damn, Dirty Ape!” Werth deserves at least as much as Ryan Howard. Please pay him accordingly.

from the first two innings offensivly, they need to swing at strikes, going be tough hitting tonight, low strike zone but they are going to have to go down and hit them where they aint.
Ruiz has lost his eye for the strike zone, we need to take a lead here and know

Because clearly a players contract determines how good he is…
Only a Met fan would think that.

that is why you run, the phillies are playing scared, they need to be aggresive like they were all of last year. Vic should be on second base

Amazing. Pelfrey is so easy to hit and we can’t get the big hit. Sam should be fired.

Victorino should have been running there. Would have stayed out of DP.
We need to run more while we’re in this slump.
One run. I just want one friggin run….

That is absolutely sickening. If you are in a slump like that most teams will try this thing called small ball to score a run. 1st and 3rd only 1 out, to me, RUN! Vic shouldhave run. So what if the catcher throws him out, because IF the catcher threw the ball, we probably would have scored on the throw. The Phillies arent just playing poor baseball, they are playing HORRIBLE baseball. I can stomach loses, but this is just bad. With the offense playing like this, we will probably lose 1-0 and get swept. PATHETIC.

@ phuh cube : thanks dude nice to talk to an intelligent mets fan. What do you think the wildcard will take ( 89 wins ? ) . Mets have to go 65 and 50 rest of way for 89 wins. Man thats 15 games over 500 rest of way. I think Omar has to get a pitcher , you cant go with dickey all year. You guys need Beltran back healthy and contributing also. We need Rollins back at the top. Wildcard is gonna be tight till the last day. The way the Phils have played recently i’m worried about my 95 win preseason prediction. We have to go 69 and 48 for 95 wins. The difference is the phils have played that kind of ball the last couple years after may. Hope we get our dream of meeting in the playoffs.

Really good at bat by Howard.
See if that gets them going. Their at bats are at least better tonight. They’re seeing pitches.

I love Werth, but he’s playing like crap. A strikeout and a DP…..
A walk and two hard hit balls in the inning and we got nothing to show.
Will they ever score again?

Well at least the Phils are getting shut down by a good pitcher as opposed to some of the other garbage that has embarrassed them the last week.

it is the curse of the knuckleballers, good hitters go into slumps as soon as they have to face a knuckleballer, Phillies have faced two in a row, almost as bad as a hat on the bed
