Boston Red Sox (22-21) at Philadelphia Phillies (26-15)

Daisuke Matsuzaka, RHP (2-1, 7.89 ERA) vs. Kyle Kendrick, RHP (2-1, 5.24 ERA)

Weather: Few Showers, 71
TV:  FOX

These aren’t the same Boston Red Sox that we’ve seen in recent history, as witnessed in the Phillies’ 5-1 win last night.  At this time of year, we’re used to seeing the Red Sox towards the top of the American League East, but instead they are quickly falling to the .500 mark.

Today, Jacoby Ellsbury will be coming off the disabled list for the Red Sox.  Ellsbury will need to be watched on the base paths, but the speedy outfielder missed a significant amount of time due to broken ribs.  On the other hand, Jimmy Rollins was placed back on the disabled list.  Rollins re-injured his calf by running out of the batter’s box in last night’s game.  The grade one strain is not said to be worse than the first injury, however Rollins is still expected to miss two weeks.  Wilson Valdez was recalled to take his spot.

Daisuke Matsuzaka will take the hill for the Red Sox.  Dice-K has had high expectations since coming over from Japan in 2007, but struggled last year and to this point this year.  Dice-K faced the Phillies once in his career, and gave up four runs in as many innings.

Dice-K will be opposed by Kyle Kendrick, who is coming off a great start against the Pittsburgh Pirates.  Kendrick has been up and down all season, so it’s always a mystery as to what kind of performance the Phillies will get out of him.  Kendrick is 0-2 with a very high ERA in his career against Boston.  Kendrick would like to continue the Phillies’ recent success on the mound.  In May, Phillies starters are 11-4 with a 2.96 ERA.  Starters went at least six innings in 18 of the last 19 starts, including 13 quality starts.

Tonight’s Lineup:Victorino (CF), Polanco (3B), Utley (2B), Howard (1B), Werth (RF), Ibanez (LF), Ruiz (C), Castro (SS), Kendrick (P).

Your gamenight beer:  A spring seasonal from Flying Dog, Garde Dog is a worthy Biere de Garde entry. It’s a bit tart, loaded with malts to create a toasted body. But why Garde Dog? Because tonight we protect our house. This is Phillies Nation. Let’s keep it that way.  –By Tim

OK: Am I the only one who looked at that Red Sox pitcher’s name and thought it said “Daisy Duke”?

    (take another drink, Tracey…)

Tracey, I sure hope he pitches like Daisy Duke! Tonight may be a little closer of a game seeing how JRoll is out AGAIN, and Jacoby Ellsbury (up now) is back in the line up for the Sox. Not sure what we are going to get from Kendrick. He has been good overall, but inconsistent. We could see a gem, we could see junk, but to start the game with an out right away is always a good thing!

Not a good evening here in NEPA. I have both Comcast and Directv to be sure I don;t miss a Phillies game. Guess what…my Fox channel on both are showing the stinkin’ yankee game.

    Any ideas???

on different note, I HATE having to be a Yankees fan for a series. LOL. Some may ask “why the hell am I a Yankmees fan today? They are playing the Mets. LOL. 14 pitches, no one on base, 1,2 3 inning, That is a good start to a game.

@Brian: Also, anything that knocks the BoSox down is a plus for the Yankees fans.

HotDogs, I feel your pain. I am in Colorado (obviously seeing the username) and even out here its Yankmees and Mets. I am so tired of the Yankee Love. Im guessing the only place Fox has anything but the Yankees must be in those individual cities. Im stuck trying to watch mlb.com.

Yikes, HotDogs. Well: I think MLB online is doing a trial of MLB TV online, for subscribers to the audio. I assume you’re out of the blackout area if you can’t see it!

Tracey, that is very true. one of My co-workers is a DIE HARD Yankmee fan (needless to say we didnt get along very well last October) and he is a huge Phillies Fan this weekend. LOL.

Oh, bleh! It says it’s blacked out nationwide! And they wonder why nobody pays for this crap…

I must say it is annoying that we have to play a pretty decent AL team as the Tomahacks (thanks Ed R! for that one) play the freakin Pirates.

Well, the audio is like $20 a year, and you get the video highlights when they happen. Not as good as watching, but not bad.

I’m surprised Fox decided to put NY on for everywhere not local. You’d think that Red Sox Nation would provide an incentive to show the Phils game in at least some other parts of the country.

At least Polanco is driving the pitch count up! No hopefully Chase is patient. At least take the first pitch.

Number 47, you are talking about the Yankees. Red Sox nation does have enough “incentives” to override the ANNOYING Yankee love.

    oops. hell of a catch

  • Posts: 0 Brian Sr. of CO

Damn. Well, again, drive up the pitch count! If they can continue to show that type of patience at the plate, and drive up the pitch count, whether taking first pitch, or fouling off a crap load of balls, that usually helps the offense. All depends on the day for Howard, Werth and Ibanez. With those three you may get a crap load of runs, or 3 pitches. I hope for the first one overall right now.

Yeah, Daisy Duke threw 17 pitches at 3 batters.

    Thanks all for your support……
I am in a blackout zone for MLB.com so I don’t think I can watch that either. Guess I will just grin and bear the Fox game and watch the Phils on gamecast.
Tonight I root for the Mets even though they are the enemy. The dislike I have for that other team that ruined my night is much more overpowering. In my area, the Phillies Triple A was sent packing to accomodate the Triple A Yankees team…I think that really is the root of my disdain!

That was almost bad. Ruiz had it, and Howard called him off.

  • Posts: 0 Brian Sr. of CO

Ok, well the patience by the Red Sox may do the same for them. Oh well. I am learning one thing today. Even a blind deaf squirrel (Mets) find nuts (runs) every once and a while. LOL

    Practically ran Ruiz down.

    HotDog: is that Wilkes-Barre/Scranton?

  • Posts: 0 Brian Sr. of CO

That sux HotDogs, I dont think could stomach the Fox game cast, I usually stick with the MLB.com “gamecast” is I cant hear the audio, or watch the game. I usually trust the pitch count and Strike Zone on MLB.com more. Could be my disdane for Joe Buck.

So I am curious, where have all the trolls been saying how great the Mets might be if they werent injured? Could they be staying away because they are more healthy than the Phillies, yet still in last place? So much for injuries ruining a season.

WOW!!! Hell of a catch by Werth

  • Posts: 0 Brian Sr. of CO

I think Papi might want to change his name to Molasis.

ok well that was a crap load of pitches for the 2nd inning, but at least they didnt score.

Mets fans only troll when their team is sniffing at 1st place…but seeing as how that won’t happen again for the rest of this season I guess we should be ok.

    Zero patience.

@Brian: still (slightly) less pitches-per-inning than Daisuke.

Ed R. True. I find it amusing that they blame last season on Injuries ALONE, but have nothing to say about the Phillies being in First place, with JRoll, Blanton, Lidge, Happ, Madson, Schneider (a few more I believe) all on the DL at some point. Thats a pretty significant amount of starters on the DL to still be in first. Not a very good second inning overall. What is this do far, a 9 pitch inning? not even a baserunner.

  • Posts: 0 Brian Sr. of CO

teejvee, remember the Phillies have a bad habit at making very good pitchers look bad (Santana, Sabathia a few others) while make bad pitchers (Daisy Duke, and a few others) look like Cy Young winners.

The Phillies are AWESOME are driving up LOW ERA’s and lowering HIGH ERA’s. Dont know why. LOL.

Actually, it’s two 17-pitch innings in a row. But the PHils need to work him harder.

Our #3 and 4 starters, set up man, closer, starting SS and back up SS, as well as back up Catcher were all on the DL at the same point, at one point in this season.

    And yet, here we are…26-15.

Giving up hits to Dice K is pretty terrible.
