Ibanez’s Timely Hit Pushes Phils Past Cubs

2010 Game Recaps, Posts

Raul Ibanez singled home Chase Utley in the bottom of the eighth, and Jose Contreras battled out of a jam to record his second save as the Phillies defeated the Cubs, 5-4.

Propelled by an efficient start from Joe Blanton, the Phils jumped out to a 4-1 after six, behind homers from Utley and Jimmy Rollins. From there, however, things got shaky. Chicago responded with two runs in the top of the seventh, then tied the game in the eighth when Kosuke Fukudome led off the frame with a home run to right. It was only the second hit reliever Antonio Bastardo had allowed to a lefty hitter all season.

Danys Baez immediately relieved Bastardo and retired the side in order. It was Baez’s team-leading 19th appearance out of the ‘pen, and he would pick up the win for his efforts. Why? Because in the bottom of the eighth, Utley and Rollins walked to place runners on first and second with two out for Ibanez, who poked a single to right field that scored Utley, the game’s deciding run.

Contreras would make things interesting in the ninth before closing the door. After plunking Alfonso Soriano on the 11th pitch of his at-bat, Mike Fontenot singled to put Soriano at third with none out. From there, Contreras took over, striking out Starlin Castro and pinch-hitter Aramis Ramirez and inducing a weak, foul pop-out from Geovany Soto to end the game.

Their pair of two-game series complete, the Phillies now turn their attention to the Boston Red Sox, who come to town to kick off interleague play. John Lackey will oppose Cole Hamels in the opener.

Here’s a postgame video from Pat Gallen at Citizens Bank Park:

Good win today. I know the sox haven’t been playing tremendous ball, the the phillies are historically poor in interleague play. Let’s hope we can break the tren this year starting with a nice series win at home against the bosox.

I would say the Sox have been getting better. They have been playing 6-4 baseball in the last 10, against some very good teams. One of those loses was a walk off at Yankee Stadium. Its amazing what Steroids (A-Roid) and alittle league ball park will do for a team (Thames home run). Take that one back, and its 7-3. They were playing piss poor baseball, but have been improving. The Phillies on the other hand seem to have been on a slump the last few days. Maybe today was the end of that slump, maybe it was the Phillies avoiding a sweep. Don’t overlook the Sox because they are 1 game over .500, especially considering the teams they have played alot against (The Rays which appear unstoppable and the Yankmees). While I would love to say the Phillies will take the series, I would tend to doubt it with a team whos offense has finally kicked in, true their pitchers have not been good overall, but they are VERY capable of shutting teams down. Nos if the Phillies can tee off on the Sox, that could lead to another tear and leave the rest of the NL east in the dust. Or maybe further in the dust.

When I lived in Boston, the Sox had an outfield of Rice, Lynn and Evans. and their top three starters were Luis Tiant, Rick Wise and Fergie Jenkins. You could go to the ballpark any game and get in and get a decent cheap seat, except when the Yanks were in town. NO MORE!!! I love the Sox in the American League, but they are not the Phils. I hope we beat the crap out of them, but it will be an interesting and fun series.

Changing the discussion back to today’s game, I know Blanton battled in the 7th and was in a bases loaded jam, but I wonder how he feels when he has a low pitch count(aroumd 80y and he is lifted for Bastardo while just two games ago Halladay is allowed to throw 130+ pitches..

anybody watch the reds-braves game. WOW. Reds were up 8-0 after the second. Then had a 9-1 lead later. The braves scored a couple to make it 9-3. The braves scored 7 in the 9th to win. Thats incredible. If that happen to the Phillies, I can imagine this site.

NC Jason: I think they’re just taking it easy with Heavy B because he’s coming off that injury… by mid-June, Charlie will let him pitch 100+ for sure.

That being said, I hope we take it a bit easier with Halladay…

BurrGundy – sounds like you and I have the AL in common. I grew up in Baltimore, a fan of the Orioles for years – a winning tradition until Angelos
I was thinking that the Sox might wind up in 3rd place behind the Yanks and Rays this year. That would be OK with me!
The Red Sox starters are off to a shakey start. Beckett’s ERA is over 7. Lester’s ERA is near 4, Lackey is almost at 5.
Looks like we will be facing Lackey (vs Hamels), Dice K. (ERA at 7.89!) (vs Kendrick 2-0 in his last 3 starts with a 2.57 ERA) and then Wakefield and his junk (with a 5.31 ERA) (vs the good Doctor).
Once again the matchups look very favorable for the good guys but we’ve seen that before.
    Go Phils!

Brooks has a good point, however the Phillies seem to have a knack for driving up low ERA’s (Santana and Plfrey come to mind) yet miraculously lower bad ERA’s. LOL. Sometimes they just flat out play to the level of their competition.

F*ck the Redsox. They have by far the most annoying baseball fans in sports. They claim to be so anti-Yankees yet they mirror their every move. Or at least they used to. Who was the genius that decided to build a team based on pitching and defense in a division with the Yankees?? Theo Ep-dude that’s who? Brillant! Not! I don’t care what happens this weekend. The Phils have never played well in inter-l play. Although the umps stole a game from us against the Bo-jingles by not reviewing Dobb’s 3run walk-off. The Redsox won’t be playing this October.

Brooks, were you named for Brooks Robinson, by any chance?

    No – family name
Repeat – the manager of the Red Sox will likely get consideration for the HOF.
Unreal – I will be placing a hardy ‘boooo’ to Francona when his name is announced.

Considering Francona did NOTHING when he was the Manager of the Phillies by chance Brooks? LOL

Jeff, the Braves comeback today reminded me of a Phils-Braves game back in July of 2008. The Phils were down 9 to 3, Hamels had gotten knocked around, but the offense battled back, and won it on a Greg Dobbs three-run homer. I think that they never looked back after that win. Best game I ever attended at CBP. About pulling Blanton — his ERA after the 6th is not so good, and I think it was ok for Charlie to take him out. I’m guessing he’s still in spring training mode for another start or two.

bigbobster, it also shows just how inept the Reds Bullpen is, and has been for most of the season, excluding the 10 game hot streak they were on. It proved nothing else.

The Phil’s pitching is going to have to handle Dustin Pedroia and our old friend, J.D. Drew, if they want to win this series. These two players have a recent history of just “killing” the Phils at the plate and both seem to hit well against Hamels. The Phils also have to contend with Youkilis and Beltre, who are both batting over .300. Unfortunate that Boston has really started to play better recently.

I don’t know if it is possible to pick up bat speed as the season progresses, but it looks like Ibanez is doing it. Maybe he had some lingering leg issues from last year that finally worked themself out? He’s pulling the ball more, and making more contact, so I don’t think he is cheating.

An epic encounter between Soriano and Contreras yesterday – neither gave an inch. Regardless of who comes back into the pen, I think we have our closer for the rest of the year. A controversial pick up by Ruben and Co that is working out quite nicely.

Jimmy back to lead-off tonight, or waiting until he can go all out around the bases?

Epstein’s idea of building around defense and pitching is a good one no matter what division you’re in. The Sox so far just haven’t gotten the pitching performances they expected. Also, Francona didn’t do anything in Philadelphia because the front office never got him any talent to work with. Had he been kept around he’d have done better.

Right now, it seems that Blanton can’t even BUY a win. He had some bad luck by getting injured, and he’s still having bad luck since his return. Of course, Halladay and Moyer had bad luck the two games previous. Let’s hope that doesn’t continue! I’m glad Bastardo didn’t pitch to any more batters, even though he probably would have gotten them out. Had he finished the eighth, HE would have been the winning pitcher, and that’s just totally unfair.

The simple solution to all of this is to pay attention to things that actually accurately describe a pitcher’s performance, instead of pitcher wins.

George you’re kidding right?? Go check out a Redsox blog once in awhile. Redsox fans hate Terry’s decision making on a day to day basis. Like Charlie, he’s a great manager of lockerooms and egos. Which is very important. But that only takes you so far. Like Charlie, it’s easy to manage and be successful when u have a boat load of Grade A talent around you to go along with a front office that his deep pockets. Except the Mets. Building a team around pitching and defense is a good idea if it were the truth. The truth is the Sox pitching overall has no imaginary or tangible edge over the Rays or Yankees. And their defense so far this season has been a joke. The Redsox sold the “pitching/defense” to bandwagon Sox fans. Tru Redsox fans that this is just bs. Long way to go, but the Redsox may really turn into semi-sellers come July… The Rays are much better and the Yankees are too stacked with deeper pockets.

  • Ahh the Yankees, love them or despise them, they are good. I do miss Joe Torre though. Thank goodness for Derek Jeter. I’m not a huge Arod fan however
