It happened! The Phillies scored a run; actually they scored more than that, beating the Florida Marlins 3-2. Kyle Kendrick was outstanding for six innings, allowing just five hits with no earned runs. KK did not walk a batter, the first time he’s done that in a win that he started since April 26, 2008 against Pittsburgh.
You’ve undoubtedly heard the ugly streaks the Phillies had been on: 31 innings since a run was scored and a full week since winning a game. That futile period is over, finally. Five games felt like fifty as one of the most explosive offenses in baseball fell silent for far too long.
Tonight, Raul Ibanez snapped the drought in the 4th inning by ripping a triple into the right-center field gap to score Ryan Howard. It wasn’t a crooked number, but it made the team, and the fans, feel better. Momentarily, anyway. The Phillies were still in the hole 2-1 at the time before Howard brought home Chase Utley to tie the game. In the 7th inning Chase Utley would score Shane Victorino on a ground out to shortstop and just like that, a win was possible.
In the 9th inning, Jose Contreras would make an already tense mood even more uneasy as he allowed two runners to reach base. Contreras would eventually nail it down with a strikeout of Cody Ross and a pop out from Ronny Paulino to give the Phils their first win since last Friday against Boston.
Let’s keep it rollin’ boys. Two wins can happen.

Kendrick did allow two runs, although they were unearned, thanks to his own throwing error.

Oh, and through four at bats tonight, Greg Dobbs saw a whopping NINE pitches, in an 0/4 effort with 2 k’s…Wow. Good job.

Is there any way to filter out these constant fake posts by idiot advertisers? Who in the world cares about “new hairs and clothes and objects…” anyway?!!!
Its bad enough wading through trolls, but if THESE things keep popping up, I’ll definitely stop reading this site. They just clog things up and disrupt everyone’s enjoyment.

Wait, you mean if you score runs, you might actually win? LOL. As for Trolls, Aaron is right, the Phillies won, and the Mutts lost (1 more loss tonight and the Mutts are .500 again LOL). When that happens they usually stay away. As for Dobbs. Actually the Mets were shut out, hopefully the Brewers can come up big and Shut them out Tonight and tomorrow. LOL. Honeslty I would rather see Dobbs go 0-4, then see Ben Fran go 0-6 leaving 6 LOB in a loss for Roy Halladay. All he needed was one, single, the Phillies would have won that game. Or even a walk. Had he walked that game, the Phillies probably would have won that game.

The other thing that gets me was the double steal led off by Vic last night. Had Vic gone for the steal the other night when it was 1st and 3rd 1 and made it, the Phillies wouldnt have had the GIDP to end that inning. Chances are the ground ball out would have led to a run. Did they all of a sudden learn “small ball”

I continue to really enjoy watching the guy we pay 20 million dollars a year hit singles. Ryan Howard continues to do his best Ichiro impression. Last night in his first at-bat he took a fastball down the middle, swung at a 2-1 breaking pitch and then was late on a 92 mph fastball from a rhp. I don’t want Howard hitting .300, I wish he would stand further from the plate (he is jamming himself on inside pitches) and hit 40 homeruns.
Also, when was the last time Raul Ibanez pulled a fastball? He bat speed is about as slow as Griffey’s.

If it’s true that Howard moved closer to the plate when hitting, then it’s working for him. He is seeing the outside pitches better and avoiding those that are out of the strike zone. In cutting down on strikeouts and making more contacts, he is still driving in runs (33 RBIs) and getting on base. Plus he is hitting at or near .300 for BA. Wow!

Howard’s best months are historically August & September, so I think that he’s poised for a big season when all is said and done. He’s not really a concern for a couple of more years.
Ibanez is another story. This three year deal is playing out the way a lot of people had feared when it was signed. He’s just not a $10 million guy at this stage of his career.
This team does need to start getting younger though. They are the oldest team in the majors by far, in an era where getting younger and more athletic is the popular trend.

And yet the team who is supposedly “the oldest team in the majors by far” (I dont believe that overall) they won 3 straight NL East Championships, 2 NL Championships. Sure SOME position players could use some young blood now (LF) overall, who else do you need “young blood” for right now? Vic, Howard, Werth, Utley, Ruiz? Who? The majr issue this team has with age is Raul and Moyer…Moyer will surely retire after this season, and Raul will be gone after next.
