San Diego Padres (33-23) at Philadelphia Phillies (30-25)

Wade LeBlanc (2-4, 3.67 ERA) vs. Cole Hamels (1-4, 5.68 ERA)

Weather: Cloudy/Windy, 64

Yesterday, the Phillies bats couldn’t come up big when it counted most as they lost to the Padres 6-5 in 10 innings. Tonight, they can still win the series as Cole Hamels will take the mound against Wade LeBlanc.
Hamels should be very well rested. His last start lasted just 2/3 of an inning due to a one hour, four minute rain delay in Atlanta. Many said he should have come back out following the weather stoppage – after all Tim Hudson did it. Hamels, or possibly the coaching staff, felt it was best to keep him on the sidelines after that long. Figure Hamels to give the bullpen some rest today. He should be primed to throw 110 pitches or so. Against his hometown team Hamels has been excellent. He’s 3-1 in seven starts with an ERA of 3.35 over 43 innings.
Wade LeBlanc is not a hockey player; he’s the starting pitcher for the Padres this evening. The 25-year old left hander has been in a funk his last four starts. In those, he’s 0-4 with a 6.43 ERA. LeBlanc is facing a lineup that is salivating and would love to break out of a prolonged slump.
Some news regarding the injured Jimmy Rollins: He’ll head to Clearwater on Thursday as he continues to rest his ailing calf. It is NOT the beginning of a rehab assignment just yet, that should follow shortly after he gets down there, however. J-Roll has been MIA since May 22 – exactly the time the Phillies slump began. When he does return, Rollins said today he doesn’t think he’ll play every day to make sure the calf heals properly. He also says he’ll have an MRI once he’s ready to return to the Phillies. He seems to be at least week away, but it could be longer. When asked today it could be a month, he said “it better not be.”
Phillies Lineup: Victorino CF, Polanco 3B, Utley 2B, Howard 1B, Werth RF, Ibanez LF, Ruiz C, Valdez SS, Hamels P
Your gameday beer: Stella Artois
A cold Stella on a beautiful night with nothing but baseball? Love it. Stella is a Belgian beer and the name is Latin for the word “star”. The Phillies could use some Stella’s tonight in their lineup. It’s been far too long since we’ve enjoyed one of their patented offensive tears. Enjoy it with a Chicken Caesar salad and a Phillies victory. You won’t be let down tonight – by either. – By Pat
GO PHILLIES!

Ruben need to do something before it is too late. This team needs a shakeup. They are going to be in last place soon.

If the Phils get carved up by Wade Freaking LeBlanc, just imagine what’s going to happen when they’re in the maw of the AL East this month. It’s going to get ugly, folks. Very ugly. There’s going to be a hole to climb out of after the All Star break.

come on if the Phils fall into last, which they wont, they’ll only be like 5 games behind…
The Phils WILL be fine! Calm down!

Bouncing back from this is a big test for Cole. Let’s see if he’s got any toughness.

I may be in the minority I think the shake up should take place in the coach staff, watch out Milt and Charlie

I dont come here often. I have to say as a die hard Phillies fan I am very upset whats going on with this club. I never thought I would see the day that this team gets shut down in six games this year. Utley looks just terrible. The padres have one hitter on there entire club. Amaro has really killed this club. I understand he is not the one hitting but to give Howard that contract for five years 125 million will come back to bite him. The bullpen he put together is a disgrace. Really ashame.

“slump’ was passed a long time ago.
This team is scarey bad, with absolutely zero indication they
are NOT in a race for the cellar by next weekend.

Their whole team is better than ours. So is every other NL team that are no more than 2-3 games below .500. Funny how very few are bashing Mr. World F*ck’n Utley.Who looks as clueless and uninterested in baseball right now as the people who work at your local “Crown Fried Chicken.”

That 8th inning was ridiculous, Ruiz flies out, YOU PINCH HIT DOBBS FOR VALDEZ…. ARE YOU KIDDING ME!!! Then Ross “I have not shown one bit of why they signed me” Gload flies out.
Can someone explain to me why Baez is still pitching in meaningful situations??????
Not sure what is frustrating me more this teams performance, or the EXTREMELY POOR Decisions by Manual!
I have not posted too many times like I used to on this site due to some series idiots ruing this blog at times and those who know me from the last 3 seasons know I am the forever optimist, but man it is hard to be optimistic with this club!!!

Utley looks like he is just up there swinging at anything he can get his short swing on. It’s disgusting. The guy went from working a count to being about as useless as Dobbs.
If anyone cares the Phillies drafted a local pitcher in the first round….a pitcher who has issues throwing strikes and only has two pitches…so, basically they drafted Adam Eaton with less of a arsenal.

MIlt Thompson?? Just curious Edr as to why you think he needs to go. It seems to me that these guys are all march’n to the beat of their own drums. Remember Game 6 last year?? Charlie repeatedly insisted leading up to the game that his lineup needed to go the other way against Andy P. And for most of the game they pulled everything anyway. This team seems bored ala 2007 Mets. They seem think that somehow everything will magically fall into place come the last weekend of the season like the last 3 have. They better be damn careful. As someone said earlier, if another nl east team has a great inter-pl record, the phils might find themselves in a hugh hole considering their history of poor in-l play.

I love this team and it hurts me to say that they suck right now. Im not even sure if they can come out of this slump at this point. If they do it will be the end of the season and its going to be too late because they’ll be 12-15 games out

What is truly scary is that they have managed to stay in the fight while hitting like this, I mean they split with the Padres, one of the best teams in the NL right now.

Good lord, Baez is awful. I know this loss can’t be pegged on him, but he really sucks hard. Whenever he comes in, you know he’s gonna make increase the damage. I don’t know what’s going on, when Hamels goes 8 and gives up 2 runs you should win the game. Period.

Even when they were playing well, the Phils were going to have a tough time in June. … I have to say, though, I don’t see *any* NL team that comes close to matching the cream of the AL right now.

They say that the Phillies security is not letting Rob in tomorrow night because of his threat of booing Ibanez, Werth and Utley. They say he really has the team furious and deeply concerned. Rob, wear a disguise and go boo them anyway.

Rob, I believe it’s illegal to boo Chase Utley in Philadelphia….you will open yourself up for a tasing.
I watched “The Bachelorette” tonight, and I’m sure I was much more entertained than you guys. The team will come out of this eventually, but it’s really tough to watch them right now.

Repeat…I might be the only one to think Milt needs to go, and that is fine. You asked me why so I will try my hardest to explain it. I liken a coach to a manger of a company, or branch, or whatever. It is easy for a manager to sit back and do their job when everything else is going well around them. If its a sales manager then its easy to be a sales manager when your team is making sales. But when they aren’t. When times are tough and no one is producing then a manager needs to step in and changes things up, change processes, offer guidance, correct mistakes. A manager, a good one, should be able to correct things and get them going in the other direction. Milt has been able to sit back and watch his offense produce because it has talented players but when the same guys have the same issues season after season, or when the entire team save for Vic, Polly and Ruiz are in a slump then Milt needs to be the one working with and correcting these issues. This is an offense that went from 2nd in the league to 18/19th. The team’s offense is failing and thus so is Milt in doing his job. Everyone needs to be held accountable.

I AM WATCHING THE PHILLIES AND THE RED SOX RIGHT NOW. THE SCORE IS 12-1 AND THE PHILLIES ARE PLAYING REALLY PATHETIC. THERE IS NOW WAY YOU ARE GOING TO GET TO THE WORLD SERIES AGAIN WITH SUB PAR PITCHING. THE ONLY DECENT PITCHER WE HAVE IS ROY HALLADAY. THE REST OF THE STARTERS YOU CAN FORGET ON MOST GIVEN NIGHTS. THE METS AND THE YANKEES ARE SAID TO BE GOING AFTER CLIFF LEE. I STILL CAN’T UNDERSTAND WHY THE PHILS COULDN’T HANDLE HAVING TWO GREAT PITCHERS BACK TO BACK RATHER THEN ONE GREAT ONE TRYING TO HOLD UP A SO-SO PITCHING STAFF.
