Philadelphia Phillies (39-32) at Toronto Blue Jays (39-35)

Cole Hamels, LHP (6-5, 3.75ERA) vs. Shaun Marcum, RHP (6-3, 3.24 ERA)
Time: 4:05, Citizens Bank Park
Weather: Partly Cloudy, 86

The Phillies are back to their old ways of offensive explosions and lights out pitching. This is the team that Philadelphia fans love to watch.
There was certainly no home field advantage for the Blue Jays, who were given a 9-0 beat down from the Phillies. The Blue Jays will remain the home team throughout this series, but at Citizens Bank Park, the advantage always goes to the team dressed in red pinstripes (but in this case, the gray road uniforms).
Shaun Marcum, who missed all of 2009 due to an injury, will take the hill for the Jays. Marcum has been solid in 15 starts this season. His earned run average sits at 3.24 and he has a decent WHIP of 1.14. Opponents are batting just .238 against him, however the newly re-surged Phillies offense could give him a surprise.
Cole Hamels continues to look stellar. In his last outing, he had one rough inning before settling in. This seems to be a reoccurring theme for Hamels. Hamels tends to be inconsistent, but lately he’s pitched very well. Hamels just needs to avoid that one bad inning, and his ERA will slowly drop, and the wins will pile up.
Your gameday beer: Today we need something hearty and strong. Go with Stovepipe Porter by Otter Creek. It’s hard as hell but fills you up. This team needs to fill up with offense. Weird transition? Sure. Eat some ribs with this. – By Tim
Go Phillies!

Good thing they moved this to Philly. Big riot in downtown Toronto with police being overwhelmed and cruisers set on fire.

Sorry I’m late — I was up late last night at the Phillies game, and took a too-long nap this afternoon!

hehehe… hating the home run, but loving watching three guys fighting over the privilege of picking it up, even though they will be peer=pressured to throw it back.

@Chuck: that was called as Utley’s error, not Gload’s.

wow , who’s on the mound ( tom seaver ? ) come on guys !
Were down 5 runs , jimmy’s gotta take some pitches there and make this guy work , shane too . One thing you always notice with yankees and red sox , theyr’e not afraid to hit with 2 strikes. Thats why theyr’e games against each other are the longest in baseball. I know when were going well like recently the aggressiveness can be good. However when were down 5 runs our team still takes the same approach at the plate like its top of the 1st. They did it thru the whole slump and it makes me nuts , remember the PAVANO game against minnesota , the guy only threw like 60 pitches thru 6 innings and it was 95 degrees out.
I know its not easy i played thru my 20′s. Does it make anyone else nuts we don’t work pitchers more especially when were playin from behind ?

@sports nut: Actually, Jimmy worked the pitcher very well last night. He walked in most of his at-bats! And went to a full count on at least one of the walks.

Everytime I see blanton or hamels pitch, I think it should be lees turn, the cheap bastard owners, one year at 9 million, why . why trade him, hate the owners, the prospects were shit we got. mariners will get more for lee now then we did. cheap bastard owners.

Hamels had one, but I thought it was just a California thing. Now I see Figgy has one.

@tracey —– i know trace , but last nite we were up big . I’m talkin about when your behind. Hey , i realize were an aggressive team at the plate. However i know you as a baseball fan, knows what i’m talkin about. When your playin from behind you cant let opposing pitchers have 10 pitch innings. Jimmy is great and i love him but his obp is always one of the lowest among leadoff hitters. I hate the friggin yankees and sox but every year theyre #1 and #2 in pitch count against. I would just like to see these guys have more discipline at the plate when were down , dont be afraid to hit with 2 strikes and get on base ! Howards homer perfect example ( nobody on ) .

@Brooks: well, nobody’s getting the job done tonight, so it’s hard to point any fingers at anybody in particular.

True – Jayson had 8 hits in his last 9 at bats – plus a walk. That was a zone.
Any idea why the Jays are changing pitchers like this? They have control on the game.

Utley is the only one who’s been on base more than once tonight, and Howard is the only one who’s been patient enough to walk.

One of the things about these Phils they have lost the ability to comeback specifically all those great magical comeback wins the last 3 years…When they would be down say 5-1 and make a comeback in the 8th an 9th Winning..Baez makes me nervous he barely made it that inning though Oh Oh the jays are going to blow this one open

WOW. I feel sorry for people who paid to see that garbage,
Oh wait, that would be me.
Caught a good nap in between Cole auditioning to throw the home run derby at the AS game this year,
Best 1-2 punch in the league,Chuck? I think not.
