2010 Game Recaps, Posts

Jamie MoyerWhat more can you say about Jamie Moyer? This guy is awesome. Last night, as the Phillies offense slowly began to creep further out of its shell, the 47-year old stud took control of the mound and notched his 100th win since turning 40. That’s an average of 14 wins for the past seven years – which kinda makes you wonder what was he doing all those years before he got over-the-hill when he was averaging just 10 wins per season. Nonetheless, Moyer has thus far silenced the critics who complain about the length and payout of his current contract. He has been a rock in an often times tumultuous starting rotation.

Last night was surely a better-than-average performance for the wily lefty. His complete game (second of the season, eighth since turning 40, 33rd of his career) consisted of 2 runs on 7 hits, a walk and a strikeout, with 65 of his 98 pitches called strikes. For the season, he lowered his ERA to 3.98 and holds a 1.08 WHIP.

As I mentioned the Phils lineup did their duty as well against Jon Garland. Jayson Werth hit a two-run homer, Ryan Howard was 2 for 4 with a double and two RBIs and Chase Utley also drove in a run. The big three were back in business, and only Raul Ibanez was held without a hit.

Hopefully the team can keep those bats hot (or at least slightly above room temperature) and pull off a sweep of win the series against the NL-West leading Padres on Sunday afternoon. They remain 2 games back from Atlanta in the East as Joe Blanton takes to the mound looking for his second win of the season.

P.S. yesterday was my birthday, and it’s always fun when the Phillies win on your birthday. It’s like an extra little present.

Does anyone else check the schedule as soon as it comes out to see who the Phils are playing on your bday?

Never did that Brian. What an AWESOME idea.

    ——–

I said this in the other thread, but Moyer ….and RAJ fo giving him the second year…..is making a bunch of us (myself included) eat their words right now.

If Moyer pitches even HALF as good as he did last night for the rest of the season….then that second year may not be such a bad thing after all. We really need him right now and he is providing some serious stability in the rotation.

The only real question mark for me in the present rotation…well there are two I guess….is Blanton, who I think will be ok and be that bulldog that we have come to love. And KK…..can he keep pitching well like he has been?

Jamie Moyer has his sights set on 300 wins and pitching until he is 50.
Ruben better start thinking of signing him up to a new contract soon. I regret cursing him earlier in the year when things were not going well.
You gotta believe that the man has a real good chance at 300 wins, especially if he keeps up like he is doing now. If he continues to pitch like he did last night, he should win close to 18 games this year. Pretty darned impressive.

Hahaha. I am watching SportsCenter and they are doin the highlites of the game last night and the sportscaster just said that Ryan is over due for a Gold Glove. Jamie Moyer you say? Well, since I am probably the lead Moyer basher in the Nation (anyone wanna dispute that, feel free) I guess I must acknowledge that the guy is pitching great, and pitching long at that. Good for him and good for us. Its time for an extension now, no? I don’t expect it to last, but I am grateful for every game that he pitches like last night.

Query: If we get to the middle of July and Jamie is 9-5, 4.12, and KK is pitching great ( a big “if), and another team offers a nice bullpen arm for Jaime beacuse they need a starter for the stretch run, we make the deal right? Move Happ back to the pen for three more months and keep Jaime? I would say put KK there but the extra LH in the pen would be so key.

P.S. The extension thing was a joke.

Actually, the Phillies won’t yet sweep the series if they win today; it continues on Monday night.

Happ is not going to the pen, and no one is offering anything for Moyer at this point or at any point in the season. We have all talked about how valuable he is in the clubhouse, and now he is showing how valuable he is on the mound.

If you resign him in the offseason, it must be for far less money. His win total is high the last couple of years primarily cause at many times he got like 5-10 runs in run support. Not going to get that too many places. You put him in Washington, Mets, Braves he is 2-8 easily.

That being said I hope Moyer continues and I think his age and what the Phillies have to offer him in support on the mound would allow him to stay here for less money. He wants the wins, he has the title, 300 would put him in the Hall and that is not that far out of reach, but probably only if he is in Philly, he knows that.

I am actually very happy with our pitching staff right now, Lidge, Romero seem to be back, with the addition of Contreras and Baez seem good, Durbin is back to being himself. We just need run support for Hamels, Blanton, and Kendrick what has been forgotten the last 3 weeks is that our pitching staff has been remarkable even outside of the Perfecto by Halladay. If Moyer had more run support last couple of outings same with Hamels each would have close to 7-8 wins.

Biggest concern for this team is getting everyone healthy and back on track with their hitting.

Don’t be so sure of that Jeff. If he is pitching well, with an expiring contract, someone might give us something. Don’t get sucked in by the Moyer Phenomena.

I would hesitate to move one of the six starters. Someone else may get injured and having six will keep us in good shape. I think it is interesting to consider what Charlie will do with Happ coming back. KK and Moyer have been pitching very well. I don’t see Moyer going to the bullpen and right now I would not be surprised if Happ ends up there. Actually we are getting a little crowded in the bullpen.

BUT, just for discussion, what exactly could we hope for in exchange for Moyer? I am not looking for bullpen help. I want some more prospects.

Dipsy, I remember another contributor here by the name of Tim Malcom who last year led the way in bashing Moyer and wanted him banished to the retirement community (chuckles). I wonder if he’s eating his words today.

Moyer sure has me made me eat my words. Great for Jamie and the Phillies. Let’s hope Blanton gets back on track today.

Jeff….all the teams in the NL East have scored more runs than the Phillies, with the exception of the Nats who have scored as many runs in 3 more games…so what makes you think he would be 2-8 if he played for any of them?

I would trade Moyer in a heart beat if they could get something of value for him.

Another thing, Jeff: So far this year, Moyer has won two games which maybe he wouldn’t have without the run support. But he’s also LOST two games because of a LACK of run support. His ERA is under 4.00, his WHIP is just a shade over 1. A lot of pitchers would love to have those stats, and some of the #2 starters around–including Hamels–don’t have those kind of numbers.

Also, if one were to look it up, last year’s “bad season” was mostly a bad BEGINNING to the season. After mid- June, his stats were really pretty decent, and once again, there were as many games he could have won as there were those he could have lost. This whole “he only wins because they score him 10 runs” idea is a load of bat guano.

If Moyer is 9-5 in mid July, I don’t think you trade him unless the offer is absolutely overwhelming. There are too many question marks (an injured Happ, a recovering Blanton, an inconsistent Kendrick, and a not-quite top form Hamels) to let a proven performer go. If he’s not pitching well, no other team would want a 47 year old making multi-millions.

And, by the way, if Moyer continues his current run, he might be 9-5 by the last week of June.

What is wrong with some of you people? “Moyer’s been good this year… let’s trade him.” What? Generally, particularly if your starting rotation has a lot of question marks, the good players are the ones you want to keep. Moyer’s been a rock, and this is shaping up to be a great year for him. I want him to have that great year for us.

If we can sign him for another year for a low price, I think that’s a great idea. I mean what would our other options be? Sign someone else for a low price who probably wouldn’t be as good and definitely wouldn’t have the same coaching benefit for the team? Bring up a minor-leaguer who would be a huge question mark?

Particularly if Blanton doesn’t get it together soon, and with Happ an uncertainty in his sophomore year and Hamels an constant question mark, we absolutely need Moyer as an anchor for this rotation.

That is, we need him this year. Next year it’d be nice, but I wouldn’t go so far as to say necessary.

Hmm, maybe I wasnt so far off huh? LOL. Dipsy you are one of te Moyer Haters, but it would be a pretty competition to see who on this hates him more. I know I was one of the VERY few on here who has supported him. I am not surprised he has a winning record, but I am COMPLETELY surprised that he has 2 complete games, and ERA of 3.98 14 Walks (Really?), 33 Strike outs, WHIP 1.08 with Opponent AVG of .234. Unreal. So much for the Hater saying he only reason Moyer got the first complete game is because he was “pitching against a HORRIBLE Braves team”. Well uh, I may not be a rocket scientist, but the “horrible braves team” is currently in first place, scored quite a few runs on us this past series (granted out offense is playing poorly), and Moyer just put quite a performance against the “NL West leading Padres”. Keep in mind, prior to the Padres dropping the first 2, (and technically still currently) the Padres do have te best record in the NL. Not bad for a pitcher, and even better for an “Old geezer” who “should be cut now” and “fire RAJ for signing the old fart to a 2 year contract”. LOL. Moyer hasnt even needed much run rupport at all over all. What has he needed to win MOST games, 3 runs?

I’ve bookmarked this because I found it helpful. I would be very keen to hear more information on this. Cheers!
