Phils Avenge World Series Loss

Well, not exactly, but it’s nice to take two games of three from the defending champs at their place. Kyle Kendrick scattered four hits over seven innings, striking out three and allowing only one run. Kendrick, Jose Contreras, and J.C. Romero combined to hold the Yankee top three of Jeter, Granderson, and Teixeira to a combined 0-for-11 with a walk on the night. That turned out to be enough, as Shane Victorino paced the offense to a 7-1 victory. Pineapple Express went 2-for-3, two walks, three runs scored and the eventual game-winning two-run homer in the fifth inning. Victorino’s home run, his 11th on the season, ties him for the team lead.

The win gives the Phillies the series victory, a well-deserved and much-needed pick-me up in what’s been a depressing month for the Phillies. Mired in a six-game interleague stretch against probably the second and third-best teams in the majors this year, the Phillies managed to start by stealing two of three against the Yankees, even after losing game one with Roy Halladay on the mound.

Not only did Kendrick pitch over his head, it’s encouraging that the Phillies didn’t let their foot off the gas late, dropping a four-spot in the top of the ninth inning to give the bullpen some breathing room. Is it too early to say that the worst might be behind us. Joe Mauer and the Minnesota Twins come to town tomorrow evening to start a three-game weekend set.

Despite the rivalry, deep down I was really rooting for the phills, I really can’t stand the Yanks, and their fans, and that was a good ol’ fashion a$$ whoopin, hopefully their down and the Mets can take advantage.

Talk about swift kick in the @$$ to good Ole Doc. He must be PISSED. I really wouldnt want to be the next team he pitches against. He is going to come out for blood. He gets lit up to have Moyer and Kendrick embarras the Yankmees. I think thats why Moyer did so well. he was PISSED by being completely Embarrased (understatement) by the Sox, wanted to prove something. The difference between Moyer proving something and Halladay proving something could be 8IP 2 ER 3 hits, to Halladay coming out to a CG SO, 1 hitter, or something along those lines. Lets hope they keep this going. Things are looking better.

It appears Vic ate his wheaties the last two games as well. 3 run triple last night and a 2 run Homer tonight!

Halladay seemed perfectly happy in the bullpen tonight and last night. Something tells me he’s happy Moyer and Kendrick were in a place to pick up the ball he dropped.

I agree that Halladay is more concerned that the team wins over his own pitching, and would rather lose a game and see the team with the next two, but at the same time, no one likes to get shown up like that.

Good two games in a row, Chase still a little off, but the rest of them have started comiing around a little bit. And why is it when KK has a good game he is pitching over his head, he is a 4/5 starter in a rotation and he will not have shut down games every time out, but outside of his Boston start he has had 3 or 4 good pitched games.
And do not get me wrong I agree that Doc will come back with a vegence in his next start, but if was Cole who got lite up after obviously not likeing an Umps call every one on here would be all over him, how he has to grow up. I know Doc has had a lot more years and it was just a bad game, and it probably has something to do with the frustration with the offense. Now we need Big Joe to show up tomorrow night, and King Cole to shut down Minnisota and keep this roll going.

Beta, I believe that was last year that people would be all over Cole. Everyone knows I was one of the more harsh critics of Cole last season, IMO, rightfully so, because he would do that all the time. This year however, he has proven, that he has matured quite a bit. Pitching much better! Even after a poor start, he comes back the next time and shows he really is a quality #2 behind Halladay, and maybe in certain pitching staff’s could be an Ace.

Now the Phills have a real dilemma on their hands. Do they send Kendrick to the bullpen, and sent Happ to the rotation, or do they send Happ, or Blanton to the bullpen? I personally think that they should still send Kendrick to the BP, even after this, but who knows.

  • Posts: 0 Brian Sr. of CO

The real Dilemma comes if they sign Pedro again. I believe Happ will at least start in the Bullpen for a few weeks to make sure he is “Major League ready”. Then by that time we shall see I would think. If Blanton continues on his own slump, he will probably go to the Bullpen, which could serve him the same as Moyer where it PISSES HIM OFF, and comes out in relief and looks good. Never know. Time will tell.

I think some people’s memory is short, Yes Kendrick has had some bad outings this year but most were in April,

He has an ERA 3.86 in June and a 3.13 in May

  • Posts: 0 beta sigma delta shag

If Happ comes back healthy and show signs that he is pitching good enough to be in the rotation, it may not be a bad Idea to put Blanton in the pen, in most of his starts he has had one or two good innings.
as far as Pedro goes I know I was against it last year, and he did pitch well but got burned out quickly, I do not want him back at all this year. You have to give Big Joe, KK, and Jamie the ball before you bring in someone else. Because like I said before, you take out the Boston starts, and KK and Moyer have been pitching pretty well, I know KK gave up 6 runs but the Phillies scored enough runs to win. I just think you have two #5 starters in KK and Moyer, they are going to have really bad games, you hope that the offense can keep them in those games. A lot depends on Happ and if can pitched like he did in the begining of last year.

agreed Nova, I do not think you send KK to the pen if and when Happ comes back, Unless big JOe turns it around before Happ comes back I think he will be going to the pen, even though I would really like two lefties out there now that Bastardo is on the DL

@Brian, Sr. Payback is big, but rest is bigger. Moyer, because of his short start in Boston, was very well rested. Kendrick, because of the juggling of the rotation, was also well rested. Halladay, pitching on four days after going 8 innings against the Marlins, was not. Give Halladay another day or a shorter outing against the Marlins and he might have won.

If you think this avenges the world series you are crazy! Nice to take 2 out of 3 from them but this does not avenge or make up for the world series! Sure gotta feel good about it though!

2 quick comments from the game tonight. First, I was listening on Xm, and they only had the Yanks feed. The woman who does colour for them is dreadful. Simpy putrid.
Second, I do feel as though our boys are starting to come around a bit. Taking 2/3 from the Yanks in New York will hopefully do a bit to give them some confidence.
As an extra little tidbit, how hilarious is it that The Yanks just signed Bruntlett? :)

obviously Billmeier got his binoculars back and got the phils offense back going again. haha.

I agree with pedro. it turned me off totally after the last world series game when he just left before team left/game ended. It causes too much conflicts and he is not really an upgrade over moyer.

A double victory in a sense in not only did they beat the Yanks in this last game but they also saddled Andy Pettite with a loss who they owed “big time” from the World Series last year.

karen; what irritates me about Martinez in that last WS game last year was that he was sick and weak with the flu and still started, got hit around and lost that important clinching game when the ball should have been given to a healthy pitcher like Happ. Not saying that Happ would have beat the Yanks in that game but at least he would have been a healthy pitcher who could have given it a shot. Perhaps Pedro departed the dugout before the team left/game ended because of being sick. I am not going to disagree that Pedro is not really an upgrade over Moyer but I do not think he is a worse pitcher than Jamie. Would depend on how Moyer does until Pedro is brought back, if he is going to be brought back, and how Pedro performs if and when he returns. Pedro was better in the rotation last season than Moyer was at the time he came back until the end of the season.

Utley’s Voodoo shrine is now 2-0. Amazing.

Ryk – You were listening to Suzyn Waldman & John Sterling from the Yankee radio feed. I agree, they’re both awful – especially Sterling’s corny nicknames and HR calls.

    I’m Ted Bell.

I agree that Sterling and Waldman are awful but so are Mr. the biggest homer ever Tom I yell and scream everytime the phillies score a run McCarthy,Wheels and Sarge…..flat out unlistenable….Harry is missed big time

Sterling was better years ago when he was paied up with Michael Kaye.
    Waldman sucks.

Brian you are absolutely dead on target –
4/26 Roy lost his first game
    7ip 10 hits and 5 runs
5/1 Roy faces the Muts and throws a shutout
    9ip 3 hits 0 runs
5/23 Roy gets the loss in his shortest stint of the season
    5.2ip 8 hits 6 runs
5/29 El Perfecto vs the Marlins
    9ip 0 hits 0 runs 11 k’s
    6/15 Loss vs the Skanks
    6ip 8 hits 6 runs
6/20 vs Twinkies – this Sunday, Father’s day – people, be there!

Yes, I left out the losses to that should not have been.
The complete game loss to the Pirates where Roy threw 136 pitches and gave up only 2 runs and the 6/10 loss to the Fish where he gave up 1 run in 8 innings. These stats reflect the games when Roy gets “touched” and his follow up games.

See your bookie Brian, play the number 620 straight/box – I’m putting my money on what you said brother!

I like what the Phils are doing. In poker and golf it called “grinding”. Doing anything they can to scratch out runs. Taking more pitches. And Charlie putting that hit on with Valdez with the Yanks in rotation was precious. While they may not be back hitting yet, at least they are doing things to score runs when you’re not doubling and homering 10 times every game. The Phils are being “industrious”. Ya gotta do what ya gotta do

I agree Dipsy. The Phillies are doing whatever it takes to win. I can think of at least 3 or 4 incidents over the past week where a guy stole a base and then scored on the next play. When you aren’t hitting for power or raking up doubles then you have to play small ball and the Phillies finally seem to be doing that.

    Dipsy, Ed R…

Make that ditto for me as well. I am very impressed with the “little things”. Running to stay out of the DP, taking more pitches, etc.

Maybe Charlie’s tobacco chaw is working!

Point well taken guys – when Valdez came to the plate last night, my first thought (oh so negative) was “here comes Mr. DP..”

More stolen bases, successful bunting – hey, the 3 run shots will come no doubt but this is exciting baseball to watch.

Great game by the Phils. As an avowed Yankee hater, just hate the fact that they hurt the Mets even when they don’t play them. I think you guys here should be proud of the performance of Moyer and Kendrick, and hopefully these two wins have tempered the panic in this forum. All in all, I think the Phils have helped push forward the argument that the NL East is the best division in baseball, and I think you Philthy fans, us Mutts fans and the Fat Rebs will have a hell of a race. Mud in your eyes. Lets go Mets!!!

Well, where are all the panic button pushers now?

On another note I just noticed an interview with Davey Lopes in Baseball Prospectus newsletter (I would give you the URL but you need membership). In any case here is Lopes admitting that Chase had a knee injury(interview during the Boston series)!

Lopes: The numbers. Mainly the stolen-base attempts are just not there like they have been in the last three years that I’ve been a part of the organization. One reason is that Jimmy Rollins is hurt and he’s our main guy as far as attempting to steal bases. Vic [Shane Victorino] is starting to pick it up. And Jayson [Werth]—and I use the term loosely—is not very aggressive at all, for whatever reason, this year. Chase [Utley] has been hampered by a little bit of a knee injury. That’s more than likely why our numbers are down, but it’s still confusing to me as to why they haven’t been as aggressive in attempting to steal.

Dipsy – this report is for you. Keith and I did go to the game on the 16th when Moyer pitched at Yankee stadium.

The stadium is rich with history which to a fan is very cool but there were lots and lots of fights, a large number of police nearby to control them. And yet who gets the bad publicity? Philly of course!

Granted, we did sit in the RF bleachers (where Cano hit that monster shot) but still, I would say between 8 and 10 fights during the game that were not that far from us.

Lots of cursing, abusive language. Keith and I did not get too much grief (and yes, we were wearing our colors) and as usual we made the best out of the situation.

Overall rating: I have only been to 5 ML parks since the 90′s, this would rank 3 out of 5.
CBP – friendly, convenient – just home!

Camden Yards – I have not been there in a few years but I do remember how easy it was to get around. There is history, convenience and easy parking then access to the Inner Harbor.

Yankee Stadium – not easy to get to. Once inside it was expensive and there were some tunnels (with shrines but still tunnels) that did not have a view of the ballfield similar to our concourse – which is the best.

Chase Stadium, Arizona – very big (dome), did not feel fan friendly, large beers were good. The PA announcers did not introduce players on the other team, just the team in general (this was vs Lincecum and the Giants). Easy to get to, easy parking and good food.

DC – confused! Expensive parking (unless you park in the dust), the stadium does not know how to handle crowds and there basically is no history there. They borrowed history from other teams –

The worst thing I might say about CBP, we dont carry 24 oz beers.
I would like to be able to offer more, but my out of town experiences with Ball Parks is pretty limited. Perhaps others can?

I have to say this team has looked pretty good since the winning Sunday in Boston.

After the two ugly, ugly loses at Fenway, they’ve won three of four, losing just the Halladay clunker.

They’re just playing better — seeing more pitches, taking walks, playing small ball when they have to.

Valdez pulling back the bunt and hitting through the wheel play was fantastic.
Victorino starting to hit. This team really goes when the leadoff guy is going.

Also, it looks like Howard, Utley and Werth are getting better at bats.

I was really encouraged when Howard hit that sacrifice fly with two strikes on him in the 9th last night. He stayed on the ball and got the run in instead of striking out. That’s a good sign.

Let’s keep the resurgence going this weekend against the Twinkies!

All those who had a problem with acquiring Polanco because you didn’t think he could play good enough defense as a third baseman, you can now relax!

Nick Punto and Jim Thome come rolling into CBP as members of the Minnesota Twins tonight. I will be wearing my Nick Punto Twins jersey. Both ex-Phillies are anxious for cheesesteaks and to hit off of gopher baller Joe Blanton. I predict the Twins win 8-4 tonight. Both Punto and Thome chow down on huge cheesesteaks. GO TWINS

    I AM ………. DA WOOOOOOOOODY

PS: Thome hits a long one. Ryan Howard leaves six runners on base.

The slump will be over when the homers start to come from the middle of the order.

Small ball doesn’t get you jack in the majors.

    Teejvee,
seriously, that’s the stupidest comment I’ve read on here in a long time.

St. Louis won a world series–and reached another–in the 1980s by playing small ball.

    And how about Tampa Bay?

Yeah, they have some power, but the speed is killer. They’re leading baseball in steals, I think. And they can score a run with a walk, steal, ground ball, fly ball.

Small ball not only helps your offense keeps scoring when you’re not hititng home runs, but it also puts a lot of pressure on the defense.

Putting balls in play and runners in motion leads to throw aways, wild pitches, misplays, throwing to the wrong base…fielders trying to do too much. The resulting errors lead to even more runs.

It’s not 1997 anymore. We’re not addicted to power. Baseball is becoming much more of a speed game.

Small ball, played the right way, can be devastating.

And if you don’t know that, then you’re not following the game closely enough.

Singles are for wimps. Chicks dig the long the ball.

And unless the Phillies start bopping them, it’s bye-bye post season.

Nice series. Phils win on the road against defending WS champs with 1-1, 5-2, 6-3 pitching match-ups that heavily favored the Yanks.

Woody, you should probably find an anti phillies website…
    ps you were wrong.
