Bats Rattle the Snakes in Phils 9-5 Win

2010 Game Recaps, Posts
Poor Cole. He throws gems for three straight outings and leaves with one win. Tonight, against one of the worst teams in baseball, he’s struggles, yet, was in line for a win. Hamels wouldn’t receive a decision, but some power baseball by the Phillies sent them to a 9-5 win – their 6th straight.
It wouldn’t be a Phillies victory without a daily injury. This time it was Shane Victorino who took himself out of the game with a left oblique strain. He will be re-evaluated tomorrow to find the extent of the damage.
Hamels labored his way through his five innings, throwing 108 pitches. He allowed three earned runs on six hits and four walks. The crispness of his previous three starts was missing, however, Hamels did manage eight strikeouts over 15 outs. Missing was his control, something that has been evident over the past month, just as it was throughout 2008. Tonight, though, Hamels could not find a groove. Home plate umpire Tim McCleland appeared to have a fairly tight strike zone on the night, which could be the culprit for those four walks Hamels surrendered.
The power bats came out and imparted damage through multiple crooked innings, something that has been absent for the better part of the season.
An RBI single by Ryan Howard tied it at one in the third inning and a few batters later Carlos Ruiz milked a bases-loaded walk to give the Phillies a 2-1 lead. Hamels would relinquish that advantage with single runs in the fourth and fifth frames, one being a monster home run to dead center field by slugger Mark Reynolds.
With Arizona holding a 3-2 fifth inning-lead, the Phils would strike for two in the bottom half thanks to Jayson Werth’s first home run since June 23rd against Cleveland. Quickly, that lead would evaporate as the see-saw affair continued in the sixth with Arizona putting two on the board. No worries, the offense was on a mission.
The Phillies put up three in the bottom half as Raul Ibanez started off the scoring by singling home Shane Victorino. Howard then deposited one into the seats just beyond the Southwest Airlines sign (Grab your bat, it’s on) giving the Phils a two-run cushion.
For insurance purposes, Cody Ransom went yard in the seventh to give the Phillies a 9-5 lead, which was plenty of support for the back end of the ‘pen.
Howard was the brightest offensive star on this night, raising his average to .302 with his 6th inning bomb off losing pitcher Jordan Norberto. Could this be his most complete year since his MVP season of 2006? Howard is locked in and his numbers that felt pedestrian at the mid-point now seem rather explosive in this year of the pitcher.
That, and it’s easy to find a groove if your hitting against the Diamondbacks pitching staff. They have, by far, the worst numbers of any National League team out of the bullpen, and the Phillies exploited that often.
As for the Victorino injury, he said he felt it grab on a diving attempt back to first base in the bottom of the sixth inning. Victorino then felt a pull when he caught a fly ball in the top of the 7th and decided to nip it in the bud.
When asked if he thinks it’s severe enough to require an all-too-familiar DL stint, Victorino said, “no, I hope not. I don’t think it’s that bad, I hope it’s not that bad. But, again, I won’t know until I take the MRI in the morning.”
Could this mean a Domonic Brown sighting in Philadelphia? If Vic needs time to heal, Brown could very well be on his way from Allentown to the pros in no time. Tomorrow promises to be a very interesting day for Victorino, who was hitting the ball quite well all night, for Brown, who could make a Major League appearance soon, and for this Phillies team, which keeps on winning, even though the injuries continue to pile up. Add that to the nonstop trade rumors surrounding this team and you’ve got yourself one hell of a Wednesday on tap.
NOTES: David Herndon struggled in his one inning of work but was the winning pitcher for the Phillies, his first win as a major leaguer.
-Hamels has posted a 2.16 ERA in July.
-The Phillies have won nine in a row at home, their longest home streak ever at CBP.

that’s right Phightin Phils! We’re making up ground quickly and will be in first place within two weeks! Hope Vic is okay, but who knows maybe a few days off will help him clear his mind and find his groove. Playing Werth in center and Francisco in left won’t be terrible. I don’t anticipate seeing Brown unless Flyin’ Hawaiian is placed on the DL

Nice to face a bullpen that is one of the worst ever.
Lets get some runs for Roy tomorrow

Well this maybe a blessing in disguise…i doubt RAJ will trade Werth if Vict on DL…not so quick with calling up D Brown..bet he will call up Timo Perez…yeah Yeah! im guessing they want to make sure D Brown is mentally and skillfully ready..lot of young players get messed up in the head if they come up and struggle (see Cole of 09)

If they DL Shane itll be Brown. Or a trade.
You bat brown 7th or 8th and there is 0 pressure actually. This is a good time to bring Brown up.

bacardipr05: Cole had been up for almost 3 full seasons, with his fourth being ’09. ’09 as proven many times by the folks at places like Crashburn Alley and, shudder, ESPN Insider, have actually shown that Cole’s peripherals were almost identical in ’08 and ’09. There was nothing about mental struggling or getting a big head with Cole. Absolutely nothing. His peripheral stats improved in some cases and stayed stagnant in others. He was almost the exact same pitcher by every other measure other than ERA and WHIP.
I’ve heard his higher ERA and WHIP in ’09 blamed on poor conditioning, record high innings pitched, pitching in October/less of a break, but this whole “Cole has a weak mental make up” stuff is just bogus. There’s a reason he won the World Series MVP and has been our solid no. 2 this year.

Wow look
Davey Lopes will work on his SB % for sure.
He has to be penciled in as a starter next year. So the phils cant keep Raul and Vic and resign Werth anyway.

Maybe Riccaboni…but when Cole has a bad outing he shows it a lot….I dont see a trade if its just a short stint on DL…I see Timo Perez Whoop Whoop been called up…Gload see more playing time…unless the Phils can scour and pick up some other Journeyman players….

Maybe? He was lights out in the ’08 playoffs, had career high in innings pitched, and had identical peripherals. lol, that’s not a maybe, that’s a fact. Cole has always worn his emotions on his sleeve since he was called up in 2006. Remember, most of the reason he fell as late as he did in the first round of the 2002 draft was because of that reason (/he broke his hand in a bar fight). ’09 was nothing different from Cole Hamels ’08 at all, physically or emotionally. Seriously.

If anyone actually thinks the phil’s will resign Werth then said people are high or are just ignorant. The Phillies will not be able to afford werth that’s why it is better to get something for him now rather than nothing when he leaves. This injury better not be bad or it mucks that up. Do you really feel comfortable with Joe Blanton pitching the 3rd game in the playoffs or world series??

I think its a good time to recognise the Phils have put a serious dent in the Braves lead without making a single acquisition and Raul’s numbers aren’t looking so terrible now…

Timo Perez isn’t exactly tearing it up in AA Reading, Mayberry or Brown would get the call. Its a shame that Matt Rizzotti plays 1st base, and further a shame that the phillies have messed up his development and that fans of the orginization don’t even know he is. Best batting Average in the minor leagues. Batting .364 OBP- .443 SLG- .653 with 17 homers, 58 RBI’s (keep in mind these numbers would be much higher but he only came up to AA Reading at the end of May)

I think Vic is making this whole ”injury” thing up. Think about it…Trade deadline is 4 days away, and its a way to either #1 Keep Werth here or #2 Bring Brown up to see how he does in the lineup before dumping Werth. What do you guys think? Im sure most of you were probably wondering the same shit, right?

The Timo Perez was been sarcastic RAJ seems unwilling to call up D Brown…all though Victorino Injury might force him to…I hope Vict is ok though….Do we really want Blanton pitching the 3rd game in playoffs Not really not unless he starts showing more consistency…Blanton was innings eater type of guy from start…Can the Phillies afford Werth…Yes this depending that he isnt asking for more than 12mil…do they wanna go over budget even if its just for a year No…whatever RAJ does he will take heat for it…i still think they should keep Happ try and trade Blanton at end of season even if we have to eat a lil of his salary…

If Myers was all that then you sign him.

LV manager Huppert told the press tonight that he believed it would be Mayberry called up if needed, he also didn’t answer on 2 seperate occasions as to whether Brown was ready or not. He also said that all indications he had received was that when Brown would go up it would be for good. Brown left the ballpark quickly and avoided the media.

not sure what the sarcasm was for. i’m not a gm. if i was then i would go with Myers right now. Happ has thrown what 12inn or whatever all season and blanton is still working on his game. take a look at his stats. he’s crazy but he has heart. The phils front office is chasing its own tail again. They shouldn’t even be in this position to begin with. How good would this rotaion be right now if they had Kept Lee and Myers?? And they could’ve had Myers for cheap too. It would’ve allowed them to tune-up this bull pen. Phils brass look like complete bozos right now.

Lol I came on here to post myers threw a complete game shutout vs. Cubs and everyone is talking about him already…but maybe they’ll just go bring him back because he’s been sharp if things with oswalt don’t work out which appears more and more likely, just bring him back…

It may be the last time we ever see it, but did anyone else feel that long-missed thrill up their spine when Werth jacked that ball into his signature spot, the vines in dead center field?? The thunderous crack of the bat might remind Werth how much he loves that sound, too. It only takes one to get him going.

Yes it can get worse than a .250 average. I hope it isnt Ben Fran. Sure he had a homer and a double the other day, but it seems like Ben Fran has once great day followed by several weeks of ZERO production. Damn glad to see Werth AND Ibanez start hitting. They both improved their BA’s by almost 10 points. Werth to .280, Ibanez to .260. The team is finally showing life, and we dont even have a full healthy roster. As for Myers. He COMPLETELY BAD MOUTHED the Phillies organization (and I believe us fans), and hes an ignorrant punk. Wow, he beat the cubs, what an accomplishment. Ok, so the Cubs almost swept the Phillies, but the Phillies can often made bad teams look great…See the Pittsburg Pirates. I hope this current offensive production stays in place. I was more surprised about the extended slump than I am about the Phillies putting up 4-9 runs a game. As for Werth staying a Phillie. I have been saying since the beginning of the season, it is NOT going to happen. There is a reason RAJ said the things he said about “$15 Mill guys”, and not being able to have a roster full of them…Unless you are the Yankees.
Funny thing about this season. By our standards, the Phillies are having a mediocre season by being in 2nd place, and only 8 games above .500, meanwhile the Mets are 2 games above .500, and in 3rd place, and they are having a GREAT season by their standards. LOL. Hopefully the Cards get their heads out of their butts and whoop up on the Mets for the rest of that series.

No. Actually, you want the Cards to LOSE. They are closer to us in the WC race. F the Muts. They’re not gonna be there anyway in the end.

I’ve never thought the Phils have been having a mediocre season. True, I’ve thought at various points that they’ve been playing mediocre baseball, but there’s a difference between an up and down season and a mediocre season. The D’Backs are having a mediocre season. The Nationals aren’t doing so great. The Phillies are in second place. I don’t know in which universe that’s a mediocre season. My standards aren’t so hypocritically or band-wagonishly high.
If Victorino is making it up to keep Werth around for the rest of the season, good on him. Werth’s best days are ahead of him and if the Phillies want to make a deep play-off run, we need Werth, Howard, Ibanez, and Victorino, along with Utley, Polanco, and Rollins. We need that core group intact. And maybe the time off will give Victorino some time to reflect on his bad decision-making on the bases lately.

I think the home plate ump had the over last night. The strike zone last night was an embarrasment – not only not calling the corners, but the ball basically had to be right down the middle. Can’t blame Coleforthe start, nice hold by the pen.
Ryan Howard – MVP 2010. Who has better numbers? Not Pujols. Votto is in the discussion. Nobody out west is carrying their team like the Big Piece.
I’m pretty sure Vic will hit the DL – obliques have a nasty tendency to get much worse when pulled and not adequately rested (look at Reyes, hasn’t had a good swing since the initial pull).
Every game, the Polanco signing looks better and better.
3-1/2 and counting.

The D-backs aren’t having a “mediocre” season…..they are having a sh*tty season.

It won’t hurt my feelings if Vic sits for awhile. While I recognize that he IS a powerful weapon in the lineup (when he’s on) and in the field….he’s not my favorite Phillie. Time off will do him some good while we see what someone from AAA has to offer.
And don’t forget about Gload. Get that dude some ABs and playing time and he’s a real threat….I’ve always liked him.

If Shane is out, I think a Francisco/Gload platoon in the outfield is completely reasonable and I believe that’s what Charlie will do. And its not a bad platoon at that. Of course that negates the possibility of trading Werth but thats OK. RAJ has had a decision made for him.
So it looks like Happ + for “the pitcher”.
Go Phils

Regarding Myers – he is having his career year. 21 starts, all 21 games he has pitched 6 innings or more, including 13 times where he has gone 7 complete or more. His ERA is 3.10 (including 1.67 for the month of July). He’ on pace to pitch over 240 innings and win 14 or 15 games.
That does not mean a thing as we found out. Next year could be chock full of injuries, walks, hrs – too sporadic, too much of a head case. Just forget Brett Myers and hope to see him during that 4 game stretch in August when the Stro’s come to town.
Most important, how will Cholly react to this latest round of injuries?
Keep Cody at third, let Poly play second – I suppose Wilson has to play SS – I see no other choice but hopefully that wont last too much longer. Who leads off while both Jimmy and Vic are out? Wilson has turned into an out machine, Cody’s pop may be back, so using him in the leadoff position would not make sense. Do you put Gload in RF while Vic is out? Does Ruben let Domonic stop by for a whirl?
Lots of questions for such a critical time in the season – by the way, I think from the AS break, its all critical.
Here is my lineup, I would think most of us believe that 3, 4 and 5 need to be left where they are:
Poly (2b)
Ruiz (c)
Ibanez (lf)
Howard (1b)
Werth (cf)
Gload (rf) (or Brown)
Ruiz (c)
Ransom (3b)
Valdez (ss)
Thoughts?

BTW – I would use Ben to replace Gload, Brown or Ibby – but not start him unless Gload fails miserably. Ben’s best performances in Cleveland are substandard for Philly (.260, 15 hrs, 54 rbi).

I don’t know why anyone would fake an injury-that’s just stupid. Maybe though Vic will use this time off to clear his head and get it back in the game.
Mayberry will probably be brought up if shane hits the DL, but god, I hope it’s brown. Just the thought excites me.

I do NOT want Oswalt. What’s the point in forcing or bribing someone to come here when they don’t want to and/or won’t be able to take the fan/media pressure when they get here. Plus, he’s got recurring back problems. And don’t bring Myers back, either. He was poison in the clubhouse last year. I think we can stay as we are. You only really need two good starters once you get to the post-season, and we definitely have that now. Get rid of Werth while we can still get something for him, but I think we need bullpen help more than a starter. And, after last season, why would anyone think about letting Happ get away?

Wow, not only would Victorino fake an injury, but Houston would take on Werth and the half season he owes under his current contract.

I like Myers too. If we can’t get Oswalt, my money is on Brett. Atleast we’d have someone who actually ”wants” to be here. But if I have to be honest we NEED Oswalt. This pitching staff would be filthy for the next 2-3 years having Halladay, Oswalt, Hamels, Blanton.
I say Houston bites off Happ & Worley alone

Last summer when the phills really needed bullpen help before his first rehab start in clearwater. Myers decided to go to a bar in Tampa get in a fight showed up the next day with a black eye and said he fell out of his truck. I am glad Philly got rid of him.

Great game… the Big Piece has that saddle on his back and he’s carrying this team to the promised land once again. He doesn’t get enough credit on here… he is the best run producer in baseball and the single biggest reason why we have won three consecutive NLE division titles. His work ethic, his character, his game… some kind of special player.
If they do call up Brown, he has to play every day… period.

Myers was one of my personal heroes during the 08 post season, no doubt. When he was warming up during the NLCS, instead of throwing the ball in the OF prior to the game – starting close and winding up from RF to center, he just kept Chooch in center and went as far to RF as possible and threw the ball over Chooch’s head into the CF stands – he was sooo pumped up but I guess that’s what you have to look at with Myers. He was able to top 97 sometimes even 98 MPH on emotion then again, he could just fall apart like we saw him do.
Too much baggage with Myers -

They would not bring Myers back, the guy is a total whackjob. And the idea that Shane is “faking an injury”in cahoots with the team to strategize for the deadline is ridiculous. This is a sport, you should not have or be spending the time to concoct conspiracy theories about Sports. There are more important things giong on then to come up with stuff like that. Come on, guys.
