CardinalsPhiladelphia Phillies (48-44) at St. Louis Cardinals (52-41)

Jamie Moyer, LHP (9-9, 4.88 ERA) vs. Chris Carpenter, RHP (10-3, 3.16 ERA)

This has not, suffice it to say, been a particularly enjoyable post-All Star Game road trip for the team from Philadelphia. After the rotation’s youngest starter got roughed up so bad the Phillies sent him to Siberia Allentown, the rotation’s oldest starter will try to right the ship for a team that was expected to come screaming out of the gate, but instead has lost four of five. Jamie Moyer’s prospects don’t look good–opposing him is Chris Carpenter, the 6-foot-6 righty with a Cy Young and three All-Star appearances under his belt, and a deserved reputation as one of the toughest pitchers in the game to hit. So there that is.

I know it’s been a rough couple days for the Phillies, with getting blasted back-to-back nights on national TV, with Jayson Werth’s social capital disintegrating before our very eyes. But in this Cardinals team that’s surely about to curb-stomp the Phillies into a precarious position in the standings, we can take solace. If our team is going to lose, it’s going to lose to a thrilling veteran pitcher and (possibly) the best baseball player we’ll ever see. So let’s take some comfort in that.

TRADE UPDATE, 7:49: If you haven’t heard, the rumor mill is churning at its fastest pace so far this summer. According to Jim Salisbury, Roy Oswalt is a very hot name being linked to the Phillies, as are Dan Haren and possibly James Shields. A trade tweeted by Rob Kuestner of CSNPhilly.com is Roy Oswalt to Philly, Jayson Werth to an unnamed team, with that unnamed club sending prospects back to Houston.

Phillies Lineup: Rollins (SS), Polanco (3B), Ibanez (LF), Howard (1B), Werth (RF), Victorino (LF), Ruiz (C), Valdez (2B), Moyer (P)

Your Gameday Beer – Heavy Busch in Duck Hunter Camo

BuschThis is sort of stealing from Pat’s recommendation yesterday, but while this beer originates in St. Louis, I was introduced to it in South Carolina. When I was in college, I drank some pisswater Anheuser-Busch products (Bud Light with lime, Natty Light, Busch Ice, King Cobra, etc.), but this one, camouflaged Heavy Busch, was my favorite. I’ve only ever been shooting once and didn’t hit a damned thing, but drinking a beer that was trying to hide from me was absurd enough to be at least temporarily amusing. Gan bei. -by Michael

I hope Moyer has a nice big strike zone and Ryan Howard had a nice lunch with his folks and feels real good.

    Is this for real???

Hell of an at-bat jimmy just put together. One pitch and a pop-up. Great work and a great start. Is this team intentionally trying to infuriate us? Three pitches two outs.

    So, no righty bat?

huh? I thought our problem was the offense, not pitching! (as J-roll gets out on the 1st pitch) Oh well… we’ll have to wait and see…

Ibanez working the count before inevitably grounding out to second base

    wtf jimmy!!!!!

Frankly, I am going to say something unpopular: I think Jimmy Rollins time in this city is coming to an end.

jimmy doing what he does best, swinging at the first pitch…he’ll never learn plate disipline…now lets see if jamie can have a good outing…

    1 pitch
1 out for the imomparable J Moy

Lets be positive and lets win this one

I don’t see Jimmy coming back in 2012

Oswalt has a contract that’s a bit expensive.. but he’s contract runs through 2011 (or 2012 with a club option).

Halladay-Hamels-Oswalt would be quite the playoff rotation… but could we even get there without Werth? (I know he’s slumping big time, but he WILL come around and he’s the only righty bat we got!)

Why couldn’t Dom Brown be right-handed!!! Ugh

May be unpopular but it is dead true. He is gone after next season without a doubt. He has been a pretty average to pathetic hitter since his MVP season.

Manny: Look at Brown’s platoon splits though. He can rake against RHP and LHP.

    hell trade jimmy 2……

Starting pitching wins baseball games, period. If the phils can get Oswalt they without giving up any prospect they should.

Yeah. And in the majors someday ;-)

You are right, Ajay… my main concern with Brown would be all the pressure he’d have to produce big time (fill in Werth’s shoes).

But you go around the league and see Buster Posey hitting cleaning up for the Giants, and he’s doing a terrific job.. Ditto for Heyward, etc

Moyer will be the man tonight. Leave JRoll alone. He is a great ball player. Trade rumors are growing. Roy will be here for Saturday, his next sked start. I hope werth is gone. We need to move him.

    Two Roys!? Holy crap!

Absolutely right, Manny. I don’t want that pressure on him either. But if it’s that or not getting Oswalt/Haren, I say bring him up.

if they trade werth does brown automatically come up??

or will they just stick ben out there……

I think Moyer is hurt. Insert Andrew Carpenter. Can anyone actually confirm this Oswalt thing? Is Oswalt much of a hitter?

He IS the NO.1 prospect in all baseball… and he seems to have the right mental make-up…

(I’m trying to brain wash myself as I’ve said multiple times on here that trading Werth is a definite NO. But if you ask me what could make this team better in 2010: Dom Brown and Roy Oswalt OR J Werth, then I guess Brown+Oswalt has the bigger potential to shake things up and get this season under control.) Plus, you’d get a solid pitcher for 2 more years instead of 2 high draft picks.

Ruben said on DNL today that Dom is not coming up now, he’s not ready yet, Ruben said he “doesn’t feel comfortable with bringing him up right now, he only has 60 at bats in AAA”.

    Bad luck for Shane.

    OK ill say it first

Werth has been getting some hits lately and taking walks.
Needs a couple with men in scoring postion and he may be back.
Thats 11 hits and 6 walks in the last 10 games

IF they trade werth i dont think brown comes up…..

Just gotta say this: One of the things I really like about the NL is that every now and then you get pitchers in key spots, getting key hits. Myers 2008 (his historic walk, his 3-3 in Game 2 of the NLCS). Lee 2009 (those doubles to CF were just too cool and I miss them).

I really miss those moments.. they’re somewhat magical, and they have the potential to ignite a rally at any given time (if the pitcher can hit, why can’t I?).

Jay “Phillyboy” then who do you think would replace him??? Frisco?? That would be a huge downgrade (though not that noticeable –for now– since Werth is being horrible at the plate).

I DID NOTICE THAT MOYER’S FASTBALL WAS AT 74 SO HE MUST BE HURT……

Didn’t even realize Moyer was out! Wtf happened! Now they’re gonna ask us for MORE in a potential deal cause they know we need someone…

    Hope he’s OK.
