CardinalsPhiladelphia Phillies (48-44) at St. Louis Cardinals (52-41)

Jamie Moyer, LHP (9-9, 4.88 ERA) vs. Chris Carpenter, RHP (10-3, 3.16 ERA)

This has not, suffice it to say, been a particularly enjoyable post-All Star Game road trip for the team from Philadelphia. After the rotation’s youngest starter got roughed up so bad the Phillies sent him to Siberia Allentown, the rotation’s oldest starter will try to right the ship for a team that was expected to come screaming out of the gate, but instead has lost four of five. Jamie Moyer’s prospects don’t look good–opposing him is Chris Carpenter, the 6-foot-6 righty with a Cy Young and three All-Star appearances under his belt, and a deserved reputation as one of the toughest pitchers in the game to hit. So there that is.

I know it’s been a rough couple days for the Phillies, with getting blasted back-to-back nights on national TV, with Jayson Werth’s social capital disintegrating before our very eyes. But in this Cardinals team that’s surely about to curb-stomp the Phillies into a precarious position in the standings, we can take solace. If our team is going to lose, it’s going to lose to a thrilling veteran pitcher and (possibly) the best baseball player we’ll ever see. So let’s take some comfort in that.

TRADE UPDATE, 7:49: If you haven’t heard, the rumor mill is churning at its fastest pace so far this summer. According to Jim Salisbury, Roy Oswalt is a very hot name being linked to the Phillies, as are Dan Haren and possibly James Shields. A trade tweeted by Rob Kuestner of CSNPhilly.com is Roy Oswalt to Philly, Jayson Werth to an unnamed team, with that unnamed club sending prospects back to Houston.

Phillies Lineup: Rollins (SS), Polanco (3B), Ibanez (LF), Howard (1B), Werth (RF), Victorino (LF), Ruiz (C), Valdez (2B), Moyer (P)

Your Gameday Beer – Heavy Busch in Duck Hunter Camo

BuschThis is sort of stealing from Pat’s recommendation yesterday, but while this beer originates in St. Louis, I was introduced to it in South Carolina. When I was in college, I drank some pisswater Anheuser-Busch products (Bud Light with lime, Natty Light, Busch Ice, King Cobra, etc.), but this one, camouflaged Heavy Busch, was my favorite. I’ve only ever been shooting once and didn’t hit a damned thing, but drinking a beer that was trying to hide from me was absurd enough to be at least temporarily amusing. Gan bei. -by Michael

GO PHILS!

    buster:

Some of the pitchers the Phillies weren’t talking about, as of early Tuesday evening: Ben Sheets, any of the Rays’ pitchers and Dan Haren.

Alright guys, see ya tomorrow. By the start of tomorrow’s game Happ might have joined the team, Moyer might be on the DL for first time in his life, Jayson Werth might be wearing a different uniform and the Phillies migh have acquired a big time pitcher or by the end of this week this will all occur – Good Nite!

Follow-up on Phillies tweet: Phillies have talked about lots of starters. But hearing they’ve spent a lot of time exploring an Oswalt deal

Oswalt has been banged up lately but yes if they got him with cole and Roy and thats some serious top of the line starters.
Somethings gonna happen. Somethign has to happen. This team is lifeless.

Please don’t trade HAPP if you’re looking to ADD starting pitching. He’s a solid pitcher who can stay with us cheaply for many years to come… and all signs say that he’s looking sharp again after his injury.

    It is counter-intuitive.

A trade for a pitcher means nothing if we are not hitting. This team hasn’t hit since the binoculars incident. Hmmm..makes you wonder. Bullpen is filth. Andrew Carpenter has played in a few games for the Phils and has shown zero promise. What was RAJ thinking by signing Danys Baez? We still have no closer.

Ist off sorry Jesus. No suprise that most trade rumors involve tampa/houston. Werths body seem to singal a move. I just dont like losing werth. If it does i dont see the point of taking on a huge salary just to trz to win this season. THis team is too flawed. Id do this though to rid us of rollins. Im sick of his bs.

I can see it now. Late Sept and the Phillies are the hottest team in baseball. But even winning every night they cant make it all the way back and finish 1 game back of making the playoffs.

    Crisis

How do you get out of a crisis? What do you do if your life is on the verge of shambles? Because I’m a big Phillies fan, because the Phillies are my team, and because the Phillies are on the verge of collapse, I’ll use the Phillies as an example; but you can apply the lessons to your own life and family. Here are the basic rules:

    1. Don’t panic because things are never as bad or as good as they seem to be. What this means is that you mustn’t run around like a headless chicken reaching out for quick-fixes, especially since most problems are long-standing or have been in evolution for some time.

    2. Take your time; panic and distress distort your sense of time. In reality, you have much more time to solve the problem than you think you do.

    3. Don’t point fingers; instead calmly assess your strengths and weaknesses. Examine what you are doing right as well as what you are doing wrong. Try to use what is working correctly to keep you afloat while you work on necessary repairs.

    4. Don’t look for the one big fix. Often, to get things back on track, you must make a series of sequential small changes that take place over time. You must be patient. As human beings we often tend to absolve our sins (incorrectly) by piling them on one person. Frequently a crisis has multifactorial roots.

    5. If you discover that you have made a mistake that can be corrected by reversing course 180 degrees, then do it. If you must apologize to someone, then do it. If you must reward someone, then do it. If you must reprimand a person who had deserved reprimanding (but didn’t get it), then do it.

    6. Fix what is broken; don’t break what is fixed. In essence, don’t create problems for yourself.

    7. Have a good attitude. A good attitude will get you out of just about any jam you can get into.

    8. Enjoy the game because that is exactly what it all is.
