Moyer Crumbles as Phillies Stumble Again

2010 Game Recaps, Posts

Frustrating. Disappointing. Depressing. The adjectives to describe a Phillies game are no longer encouraging the way they were for two-plus seasons. After tonight’s 7-5 loss to the Braves those descriptors, coupled with the sweltering heat, made for a lousy time.

Atlanta showed why they are now the class of the NL East by grabbing two-of-three from the Phillies. They smacked around Jamie Moyer for just one inning, but that was more than enough.

Moyer had been a thorn in the side of the Atlanta Braves up until the first batter tonight’s game. Prior to Martin Prado’s leadoff bomb to left field, Moyer had gone two starts – or 15 innings – this season without giving up an earned run. At Citizens Bank Park over his last three outings, he’d been perfect, going 3-0 with a 1.88 ERA. At the worst possible time, Moyer imploded in the sixth inning, giving up six runs on six hits. A devilish sign? You betcha. Home runs by Martin Prado and Matt Diaz sandwiched a Brian McCann three-run double, which put the Braves on top 7-3. It was a lead they would not relinquish.

Five runs on 10 hits is by no means an offensive explosion. But for this Phillies squad, in this state, it’s as close to as good as it gets. Going through the order, there were positives. Ryan Howard continued his tear, collecting two hits, including a home run into the flowers in left field.

As much as people complain about Howard – and perhaps that’s warranted – he has now hit safely in 20 of his last 22 games. During that time, the first baseman is hitting .349 with seven homers and 21 RBI.

Jimmy Rollins chipped in two doubles and Greg Dobbs even put together a healthy 2-for-4 stat line.

For Moyer, it was a tale of two different pitchers. At one point, he retired 16 of 17 batters. Then the sixth rolled around and an ugly, nasty crooked number was stamped on the board. He hit the proverbial wall and hit it hard. Moyer had the lead before entering the frame but left having shot himself, and his team, in the foot.

It’s hard to blame any of the starting pitchers if they put together a bad night. For the most part, they’ve been solid. But this turned out to be yet another frustrating night for one or more parts of the Phillies team. After the loss, Moyer continually used the word “swagger” as a lacking ingredient. “We just haven’t found a way to get running on all cylinders,” said Moyer.

“We’re having a tough time right now, and we’re banged up, but at the same time, if you want to stay in it, you can’t be chasing two teams,” said Charlie Manuel. The skipper also talked about putting it all together, just as Moyer mentioned. That seems to be the crux of this crumbling team. When the offense has a decent day, the pitching fails.  When pitching staff puts it together, the offense bombs, which has been the case more often than not. Rarely have the two units been on the same page.

They’d better get on the same page quickly because they continue to fade as they stare at the backsides of the Braves in the division standings. Six games now separate the two clubs. And what began as a huge series turned into a dud. Frustrating. Disappointing. Depressing.  You betcha.

It was sweltering heat and Moyer is a 47-year old pitcher. Charlie Manuel doesn’t even have anyone warming up to replace him if he falters. DAMN BAD FIELD GENERALSHIP. Moyer should have been pulled early in the sixth. We would have won. Manuel has lost it. Fire him tomorrow. That’s an order.

    The beat goes on.
By the trading deadline the Phils may well be sellers not buyers. Luckily the Mets arent in the picture. But the Braves are and I thnk the Reds and Cards are good enough to make the playoffs too. Cant fall behind that many teams. I am already focused on the wild card though. The Braves are kings of the east again its easy to see.

Dobbs might have been 2 for 4 hit-wise but he stranded 4 runners and did not come through with the sacks loaded. Manuel’s name needs to be right up there along with Moyer’s name for the Jeltz Award. Failed to relieve Moyer in the 6th inning of a very important game when Moyer started getting into trouble and the Braves were getting to him. Do not know who Manuel could have gone to or whether or not the bullpen would have held Atlanta off but you have to give it a shot in that situation that Moyer was in with the Braves coming on.

Can we just hit the reset button and see how this season would’ve been without all these injuries? Please? No, what a shame.
The injuris to Utley and Polanco could not have come at a worse time. We were just getting a little bit of “swagger” back with Rollins in the dugout and now, well just look at our infield!
I have no doubts that these 2010 Phils are not done. I have no doubt that the 2010 Phils will have a 2nd half run in them comparable to years past, and I believe that Chase is coming back sooner than we all expect. That being said, obviously the NL East is much stronger than the last 2 years, and the NL as a whole is fielding a lot more quality squads to compete with for the Wild Card. 6 games is not too much to overcome for the East, but we need Utley, Polanco, Ruiz and Madson back soon for us to start playing the way we have to play. If these Phils are going to make the postseason this year, which they are certainly capable of, they will have to earn it. The odds are against them, but I still think they have it in them! Go Phils!

A decent bat for the infield to replace Utley while he is out and another dependable starting pitcher would help the Phil’s effort at this time and also a relief pitcher, possibly someone who also can close.

I’ve been trying to stay as optimistic as you robert, but it may just not be the phillies year. Even the yankees missed the playoffs in 08. Why? Injuries. It just wasn’t their year. They came back and won the series last year. Sure we all know what this team is capable of, but there is a chance that we may not see the phillies manifest that calibre of play this season. Best case scenario is that we stick around long enough to make a late run. This team will be back and in contention again in 2011. Hopefully dominic brown will be everything that we expect and really infuse some young talent into the lineup. Outfield could look much different next year. The hallday/hamels one two will be in tact, and remember that hamels is still young and improving. 08 was amazing but guys figured him out and he has had to redefine his pitching. His changeup is still nasty, he just needs one more good out pitch. It could be his cutter or he can figure his breaking ball out. Infield will be together as well. Assuming everyone stays healthy we will have another run at it.

As frustrating as the majority of this season has been, I still feel fortunate that we can spout off at the typing fingers about how the Phillies, as good as they are now, “should” be playing. For countless years in and around Philadelphia, we didn’t have a fun team like this to watch. I’ll go on hoping that the Phillies will pull themselves together until the moment they are eliminated from the playoffs. And if they don’t make it, we’re guaranteed that this group of guys will be around a while. Plenty of fun times ahead.

Hey Shane you better be careful………and stop being such a girl and get thicker skin your hitting .251…..

Victorino: “I’m hearing fans yell you’re horrible. You stink. They’re quick to forget what happened in the last two years……that frustrates me more than anything, listening to that stuff… it eats at you.”

Who r u? His litte fn mommy or sthing? Shane is udispln as a hitter but far from soft. F those fans. Many r rct cowards hiding like sheep bhnd the booze. They wrship chase/werth no matter what. And the drool like wolves wtg for the chn to get on rlns/howard.

I’m not a big Victorino fan, but one thing I will say in his defense – he is not soft. Agree with Repeat! (although I’m too old to understand half his shorthand) – too many drunk “fans” hide in the crowd, hoping for something bad to happen so they can boo. Also agree that vanilla coke is delicious.

Howard is the most complete player he has ever been in his career – with the exception of his inability to throw to 2nd base, all other criticism is unwarranted. It’s hard to get rbis when no one is on base in front of you. Ibanez is showing some nice plate discipline in the 3 hole, Howard has been hot, about to completely break out.

Moyer and Charlie mentioned that the swagger is missing, but for the first time in a while, last night I though we had a shot at coming back. Looking forward to the Reds series, a few guys look like they are starting to get angry.

6 games out in July, not ready to throw the towel in yet. Durbin, Madson, and Chooch will be back soon. Rollins needs the abs to get his eye/swing right – but its coming.

I don’t know how much there is to say about that game. Pitching was the story. Slowball Express was doing just fine until that awful inning. Baez was very wild. You have to like Figueroa. He’s been effective.

Good job today by Rollins and Howard. Shame Rollins didn’t have just a few extra feet on that ball he tagged late in the game. I liked Victorino’s HR quite a bit, but wow, he had two really awful ABs.

From Phillies.com “Fans frustrate Victorino, seeking support” There appears to be a major typo- it should read “Victorino frustrates Fans.”

“For countless years in and around Philadelphia, we didn’t have a fun team like this to watch. ” Are you talking about the Flyers playoff run? Because the Phillies have been incredibly boring to watch this year. They rarely if ever comeback on teams. I can only think of 2 games this year in which the took they won the game while trailing in the 9th, one in San Fran and other week against Cleveland. It’s rare that you get an exhilirating game. It seems like if they are trailing in the 5th, the game is pretty much over. They have been shut out 8 times. They have not won back to back games in over 2 weeks.

Good afternoon Phillie phans!!! Im so glad to see that you all agree….

First off. if yall hate victorino, we will be glad to have him, we would trade you melky and mcclouth.

Second, if you really want to get rid of Worth, we will take him too, we would trade Hinske and Diaz, no waith nevermind HInske is our walk off hitter and Diaz is our Phillie crusher better hang on to them how bout T. Saito and Kawakami?!? Those are two quality pictchers.

Anyway, thank you again for a series win, and I really hope that your second baseman never returns!!! Have a great day!

    Much Love,

From Atlanta GO BRAVES BELIEVE 2010!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Victorino’s statement wasn’t so much a complaint about fans getting on the Phils, but about fans GIVING UP on the Phils. He didn’t word his comments well, but if a person paid any attention and actually read his entire statement, his thoughts were pretty obvious. Reading some of the comments here, I can agree with his assessment: “trade Werth,” “fire [Manuel] tommorow. That’s an order.”"on my way to the BF bridge…”

Even if the Phils do have problems, it’s still too early for such defeatism.

When they did a close up of Jamie’s face in the 2nd or 3rd inning, he looked genuinely unhealthy. Like, “call an ambulance” unhealthy. Of course, that’s probably how I look when I’m walking up a slight incline, and I’m 20 years younger than him.

Moyer had pitched an excellent game until the sixth. THAT’s why no one was loosening up. And once the bullpen stirs, it takes a bit of time for them to really warm up; sometimes three or four batters. What’s Manuel to do in such a situation, call for a timeout? Bring in a reliever who’s still tight and could get injured because of it?

This is why athletes have hated Philadelphia fans for years ….

and why I defended what Jimmy Rollins said 2-3 years ago when he called our fans frontrunners ..

I think from what i’ve been reading: If the Phillies don’t make the playoffs this year, they suck? And Manuel should be fired? …

    REALLY??

Maybe fans needs to look into baseball, realize there are other teams out there that improved from last year, and so this year, with all our injuries, the playoffs just might not be in the plans… and I guess i’ll be one of the few that still loves them more than ever because they’re the “Phillies” .. not just because they’re the “NL CHAMPION Phillies”

COME ON! How do you consider a team the class of the division when they take us down without our 2 and 3 hitters. Take Heyward and Larry off ATL and they’re in a bigger hole than we are.

I’m sick of this “sky is falling” attitude. You’re all proving Jimmy (and now Shane) right.

Fn frontrunners. Go back to Boston, home of the frontrunner.

Don M, I know what you mean. This is why I have been saying it’s okay to recognize that maybe we don’t make the playoffs this year. If we do that though, we need to make savvy moves so we are playing for the future, not just some endless denial that this year is a failure if we don’t make the playoffs.

I’m not saying that we should trade Werth because I hate him and I don’t want to see him as a Phillie. I’m saying trade Werth because having developing prospects is something we really need right now as opposed to the uncertainty of draft picks.

Sometimes the best move is not the most popular. Amaro needs to buckle down and make some hard choices before it’s too late.

Don, you are one of the younger fans on here who actually seems to have a mature attitude towards all of this. These young kids are spoiled now, and expect the Phillies to be in the WS every year, and they will never be happy unless that happens. We could have a team like the O’s or Pirates, who have completely SUCKED for years. Are they playing the way I’d like to see them play? No…..but for fans to say they are horrible, season over before the a/s break, it’s just ridiculous and immature. I really think some “negadelphia” fans are HOPING for failure so they can whine on and on about how pitiful this team is, when in reality, THEY are the pitiful ones.

Look, we all know the Phillies are in trouble. It doesen’t mean they are done. I just hope that they can fight back.

Don M, if it becomes clear that they are not going to be contenders in late July (14, 15 games back), wouldn’t you consider trading Werth? I would because if they are not going to get to the playoffs, then they might as well get some established prospects for him than draft picks.

    We can’t trade Werth.

I have to say that’s the most idiotic thing I’ve seen. Stupidest thing we could do. Trading Werth–and getting rid of our only dangerous right-handed bat–means we’re giving up on this season. (If we trade an OF, it has to be Victorino–though I’d hate to see that.)

And you don’t give up on a season when your team is within 2-3 games of the wild card. Even a six-game deficit isn’t impossible. Stranger things have happened. THere’s still a lot of baseball left.

WIth this team’s track record, you can’t give up. This team is built to win now. If we lose Werth in the offseason, so be it. We can find another RH bat. But right now, in this season, we need him.

If this team gets healthy and can sneak into the playoffs in the wild card, watch out. Anything can happen in the postseason, especially with the Phils track record and how the offense can get hot.

Is it going to happen? I don’t know. They might miss the playoffs.

But you show me a healthy Phillies team that’s hot in Sept. and wins the wild card and I’ll show you a team that no one in the NL wants to face in a playoff series….

Pat Gallen writes in his article:

“As much as people complain about Howard – and perhaps that’s warranted – ……”

    And perhaps that’s warranted????

Really???? Tell me just how it’s warranted to complain about Ryan Howard this year.???

    .298 average
    16 HR
    62 RBI
    .351 OBP
    .514 SLG

He reports to Clearwater early and works his a$$ off. Loses weight. Works on his fielding…..so he can be a BETTER defensive player.

He has numbers this year that are RIGHT THERE with the league leaders.

Yet it’s warranted to complain about him?? I just don’t get it.

Hey Chuck……We all know you love Howard. Let people complain about Howard if they want to. We all see him differently than you. You continuously go to bat for him like a loving daughter. Take a break already. He is a great ballplayer. Ruben Amaro is to blame for signing him a year early and for too long a time frame. We know what this will do to this team in terms of making moves in the future. SOOOOOO, we use Big Brown as an example. Take it easy and calm down. Don’t blow your wad on this. It’s just baseball. Do you wear a Howard jersey ?

I dont think there is even the combination of Phillies lose everygame between now and the deadline and the Braves WIN every game between now and the deadline to put us 15 games back .. …

But I said last week, if we’re 10 games out at the end of July, and Polanco and Utley aren’t close to a return .. then you would have to think about dealing Werth

BUT … as much as people want to complain about us being “6 games out” .. we’re only 3 games behind in the Wild Card .. and LOTS of Wild Card teams have made the World Series recently, including the Rockies and Marlins

If the Phillies were to trade an OF, my best guess is that it would be Victorino (Ibanez is a below-avg, DEFENSIVE OF, with a higher salary) . . . Victorino would be a great addition to a team like the Diamondbacks, who could use an everyday player that’s “been there before” .. he could be their Aaron Rowand)

I see the Phillies adding a pitcher, and then finding bench help off the waivers, as usual .. they’ll then cross their fingers, hope the team can return/stay healthy and see if we can make our way back to the playoffs

    at which point:
Halladay – Hamels – Blanton – and anyone we traded for … gives us a good shot to advance

Also, Howard is a team leader in the clubhouse and on the field. he never wants to sit out a game. He acknowledges the fans, signs before games, etc. He’s gracious in interviews.

He’s really become the FACE of the franchise in a lot of ways.

Yet it’s STILL seems to be ok to b*tch about him.

Can someone please tell me if I’m missing something….cause I’m really confused.

Howard is truly a great guy. Most of us just care about his on-field performance and are not emotionally connected to the ballplayer. They loved Iverson and he was a thug. They loved Ted Williams and he was a nasty bastard, They loved Steve Carlton and he was a self-centered douchbag, they loved Dykstra and Rose and they were mentally ill jerks. It is alllll about what happens between the lines. Howard is not going to host a kids show. If he were, you would be watching it, I’m sure.

We booed Schmidt, Dick Allen, Wilt and others. We are Philly fans. Nasty jerks who demand excellence and effort. We are this way because we live in a nasty area surrounded by crime, intensity, a decaying city, mean ethnics, crappy weather, too much traffic and unhealty food. Our outlet is the toilet called the Jersey Shore and the garbage dump called the Poconos. We are a product of our environment and upbringing. If I were a talented athlete in any sport, this is the last place on earth I would want to play.

I think Ryan Howard has a better chance of hosting a kids show than Lenny Dykstra.

And to be clear about it….I’m not “emotionally connected” to him either. But I like the fact that he’s NOT a douchebag.

Ryan Howard, I think, truly appreciates what he’s been able to accomplish and for what the Phillies have done for him. He should. They are paying him a lot of money.

And just to clarify one more thing….I wasn’t for the big contract right away either. Waiting might have made more sense. Or maybe it wouldn’t have. We really won’t know for a few years. Maybe when it’s all said and done $25 M a season will end up being a bargain.

Chuck, check FanGraphs. Howard is ranked as the 7th first baseman in the NL. The only year he was ever worth close to $25M/year was in 2006 when his estimated free market value was $24.1M. His next best was 2009 at $21.2M and then the next best after that was 2007 at $17M.

Howard gets so much criticism because he is overvalued, not because people think he is bad. If he wants to work on something, he should work on poking singles and doubles to the opposite field. Nothing is worse than that shift.

What does everyone think of the lineup last night? At this point, what do you really do with it, but Ibanez being 3rd definitely raised my eyebrow.

in the big picture…. I truly appreciate your loyalty. I just see things differently. And I am sorry to jump on you, but you do jump on others. The truth be told, you add a lot to this blog and I always read and ususally agree with what you say. Personally, I am so pissed with Amaro for this early contract upgrade for soo much money. So much can happen and we had all of next year to deal. It is not Howard’s fault. He is one of my favorite players, as well. I think a lot of us care way too much about our team and show our frustrations differently. Have a good day and let’s hope Kendrick pitches well tonight and we score some runs off a tough Reds pitcher. I’ll be at the game either cheering wildly or crying in my beer.

And like I said….maybe it WILL be a good contract….in terms of value….and maybe it won’t.

We really won’t know for a few years.

But for now, it’s really unfair to say it’s “warranted” to complian about him….when he’s really producing just fine. Again, look at his numbers. Average is up. Home runs are down a little….but right there with the rest of the league leaders. Same with RBI.

If he’s overvalued…is that HIS fault?? Why should HE shoulder the blame for that….when he going out and doing his job??
