Phillies walk all over Jimenez, Rockies 10-2

2010 Game Recaps, Posts
You had to feel bad for Kyle Kendrick (6-4, 4.60). He was shelled in his last start against the Cardinals getting knocked around in a 8-4 loss. He was then sent down to Triple-A Lehigh Valley with the big league club looking to aquire a front line start via the trade. That trade has still not happened, yet. Then Jamie Moyer goes down.
Here comes Kendrick. Called up to start today against the Rockies and Ubaldo Jimenez (15-2, 2.75). Jimenez has been one of, if not, the hottest pitchers in baseball. Kendrick’s own manager Charlie Manuel even penciled Jimenez in to start for his NL All Stars. It was not going to be fun. Right?
Wrong.
For the second straight game, the Phillies offense looked completely different then they had in the previous eight games. At first it didn’t take their bats. It took their patience. Jimenez walked six batters in two innings. But it was the three in the third inning combined with two triples that was his demise.
The Phillies scored seven runs in the third inning. Ryan Howard hit a bases clearing triple, his fifth, to start the scoring. He would then score on a wild pitch. Jimmy Rollins would then triple, in his second at bat of the inning, to plate two more runs. It was 5-0 before recording an out. The Phillies took the field in the top of the fourth with a 7-0 lead for Kendrick.
Kendrick went seven innings allowing only one run on six hits and struck out three. After his last start, Kendrick said he left some pitches up and they hit them. Today he probably left some up too, but luckily for the Phils only one Colorado hitter connected. The only run surrendered was a solo home run to Ian Stewart to lead off the fourth inning.
Rollins set the tone in the leadoff spot. He had three RBIs to go along with his three hits. He also stole second base in the seven-run third. Howard also had three RBIs and Raul Ibanez hit his eighth home run, a two run shot in the third.
Jayson Werth had his very own cheering section with the Pirates, Rays, Red Sox, Tigers and Astros all having scouts in the seats. Werth did not disappoint going 2 for 3 with two walks. His line now stands at .284, 13hr, 52RBI.
Recently called up Vance Worley made his Major League debut throwing a perfect ninth inning striking out two of the three hitters. A nice gesture by Manuel guessing he will be sent down tomorrow to make room for J.A. Happ.
Worth noting: Up until the solo homer allowed by Kendrick in the fifth, Phillies pitchers had not allowed a run in 24 innings. Also, minor leaguer JC Ramirez was scratched from his start for Double-A Reading tomorrow. He is not injured. Hmmmm……

Kyle did get a few lucky breaks saw a few pitches that could of been hit that he got away with. Notice he was going inside a little more…Lil simplified view but i think if he can avoid the long ball as much he may one day make a serviceable 5th Starter….

I haven’t said one thing about the cliff lee trade, it happened and I just let it go, but now I think I’m going to… Now I might be jumping the gun here but we trade a pitcher we desperately need to get jc ramirez among others as we know, and now we might trade one. Boy for amaro’s sake I really hope it pays off.

This offense showed signs of life today. They worked the count. They were patient. They played smart. Unreal what happens when you work out good at-bats. I think this is the lineup that we need. I will sacrfice some defense at third to have Polly at 2b and Dobbs at 3rd. Victorino looks like a little-leaguer out there. He has been brutal.

Oliver Perez sighting. He takes the loss in the 13th for the Mess.
12th time this year the mighty Mess have lost in their opponents final at bat. Getting Beltran back has really sparked them.

Kendrick pitched well. I’m glad Vance got a shot before being sent down, that was a great gesture by Chuck. I have a feeling that we’ll be seeing Danny Haren in red and white before the deadline, and honestly, if Ruben can turn Ramirez, Singleton, and an other prospect or Happ (as suggested at MLB Trade Rumors in various pieces) into 2 1/2 years of cost controlled certainty in Haren, that will be the coup of the deadline.
@Bacardipr05: Trading Shane would make absolutely no sense for the long term or short term direction of the team. Dom Brown doesn’t play center field and Jayson has a handful of games there as a Major Leaguer. They have Shane in a very team-friendly deal, batting average down or not, and he still plays average to above average defense, rarely missing games. His power numbers are up, HR, 2B, 3B, Slg, and he’s on pace to raise his steal totals again while being over that magic 75% efficiency rating on the base paths. We’d also likely get a bigger haul for Werth as well.

Fox Sports and MLBTR reportin Phillies very interested in Haren. Dback interested in jon singleton. a reason jc ramirez was scratched tomorrow for monday was because two starts he threw a lot of pitches and then struggled in his last start. therefore he was given an extra day, but u never know…. Phils very interested in haren folks…….

The Phillies continue to talk about Jayson Werth with other teams, as they have for weeks.
It’s the sort of thing that raises antennae at this time of year.
Phillies pitching prospect J.C. Ramirez was scratched from Sunday’s start with the Reading Phillies. The team said he will pitch Monday instead.
No official explanation was given.
Maybe the reason is very simple: Ramirez ran up a high pitch count while throwing eight innings in a July 15 start. He took his regular turn the next time and struggled. Perhaps the Phillies simply want him to get additional rest before taking the mound again.
Or maybe the move was trade-related.
The Phillies are known to be speaking with the Diamondbacks about right-handed starter Dan Haren — and the Astros regarding Roy Oswalt. They are also open to trading everyday right fielder Jayson Werth.
The Yankees and Phillies, opponents in the World Series last year, are both in pursuit of Arizona right-hander Dan Haren, sources said Saturday.

The Phillies are trying to upgrade their pitching staff — particularly after the recent injury to Jamie Moyer — but they don’t have the same quantity of elite prospects that they did while pursuing Roy Halladay at this time last year. Outfielder Domonic Brown is one of the best prospects in the game, but the Phillies have no plans to trade him.
It is possible that Philadelphia will trade outfielder Jayson Werth to bring the prospects — and salary relief — necessary to acquire Haren or Oswalt.
Philadelphia’s farm system is strongest at the lower levels, so the Diamondbacks may need to be patient with their return if they choose to deal with the Phillies. A number of Phillies prospects closer to the majors — right-handers Phillippe Aumont and Trevor May, outfielder Tyson Gillies — have not performed very well this season.
The Diamondbacks are said to have interest in Jonathan Singleton, a slugging first baseman at low Class A. Only 18, he has posted a .307/.416/.533 line, with 11 home runs in just 64 games. Right-hander Jarred Cosart is having a standout season for the Phillies’ high Class A affiliate but is currently on the disabled list.

•It is possible that the Phillies will trade Jayson Werth in order to get the prospects necessary to land Haren, according to Jon Paul Morosi and Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports. Alternatively, the D’Backs could take advantage where the Phillies’ farm system is strongest: its lower levels. Arizona is said to have interest in one single-A player in particular, 18-year-old slugger Jonathan Singleton.

Lots of news regarding a trade between Phillies and Diamondbacks – could see Dan Haren soon in a Phillies uniform…….
Halladay,Hamels,Haren,Happ/Kendrick,Blanton
Could it be the triple H squad? quadruple H? triple Horsepower??

Ahh yes, the old “he threw a lot of pitches in his last two starts.” They are definitely up to something, and soon…I am still thinking that Oswalt would be absolutely mad to pass up a chance to come here and team up with Halladay and Hamels. Should the Phillies make the playoffs, which they absolutely still can if they keep hitting like they did today, that threesome would be devastating in a playoff series.
I was there today, protected from the sun under the overhang in section 125, still brutal out there though, But they were excellent today. Rollins looked healthy and aggressive. Howards triple was awesome, he smoked the ball down the line and booked it to third. Kendrick was very good today as well. Worley has something there for the future.
The Phillies need to land a big starter. Getting players healthy and in their normal positions and slots in the lineup again will resolve the offensive issues. They have all the bats they will need to win another world series, it just a matter of getting it sorted out again.
Brown will help, as it looks like someone will bite on Werth and give us what we need to move him. Starting with Happ, Singleton, and someone like Gose – thats a good start to a package of players that would land us the likes of Haren or Oswalt. Perhaps Freddy Galvis as well. We still have great prospects, especially in the lower levels.
They can get it right again and get back to the playoffs. Have a little Phaith. The law of averages will take over now that people are coming back healthy to the lineup. They are superior hitters, and they will start to get the results again now. Polanco was also outstanding playing his old position at second base.

So Kendrick might “one day make an serviceable 5th starter?”
He’s 6-4. How much more serviceable can he be? Sure, he’ll get bombed from time to time, but so does any other 5th starter. That’s why they’re 5th starters.

I personally prefer Oswalt, but Dan Haren is an excellent pitcher and would slot in well at the third starting place in the rotation, still very scary in a playoff series – Halladay, Hamels, Haren. The idea of Hallday, Hamels, Oswalt would be a nightmare for opposing hitters though.

Don’t want to guarantee anythin, baseball is unpredictable
but it looks like the following as we head to sunday morning with Jeff Francis vs JA Happ:
-Phillies will be 1.5 games up on Mets, 2 games up on Marlins(watchout!!!) and 8.5 or 9.5 up on Nationals
-Phils will be 5 back of NL East leader Braves
-Phils will be 3 back of NL Wild Card leader Reds
-Phils and Dbacks heating talks up about trade involving Dan Haren

I was thinking myself. Watch the Marlins end up the main competetion.
As always I completely disregard the mets.
Jerry Manueal is 170-174 now for his career. Lets just hope he stays as long as possible. He is good with the media thats whats important in NYC.
Id be thrilled to have Haren.

Marlins have blown lead
5-5 top 8th braves with men on 1st and 2nd – 2 errors in the inning have led to basically all 3 runs in the inning and maybe more
Or the marlins can get their 4 walkoff win in 6games???
baseball is unpredictable like the phillies trades rumors
started off slow with a bunch of pitchers, then got really hot for oswalt, then cold, then extremely cold, then hot, then haren gotten really hot and now oswalt getting hot as well for phillies

Singleton is 18 and he’s most likely a first baseman so trade high. Not sold on a starter if happ is in the deal. Glad to see the club hitting, but I’d love an infield bat and a bp arm. Being real gm is a lot harder than a side bar gm. Oswalt doesn’t want to be here so pass. Haren not having a great year, but the stuff is there. Ugh. Bye bye mutts.

Oswalt gave up 6 runs and 9 hits to the Reds today in 5 innings. Do we really want this guy in the starting rotation in Philly? Has been hit hard on occasion this season. Decent ERA but I think Haren would be a better option.

see, thing is folks is that if we hit like we did today, then kendrick and his 4.60 era (honestly that’s not terrible for a #4 or 5 starter) will be fine. Happ is a question mark. I’m looking for about a 4.30-4.50 era outta him.
Therefore, if the offense comes to life, are we content with a dynamic 1-2 punch and hoping that Blanton finishes pulling it together? I like Blanton. People have given him crap all year but i think he’s pulling it together. I’m not gonna lie, having Haren or Oswalt would be phenomenal, but that only matters if WE KEEP HITTING THE BALL.
in conclusion, i’m fine if we make a trade for a starter, but i’m also gonna be happy and root til the end for the Phillies if they don’t. Remember 2008 when we came from nowhere to win it all!

If you win a world series and Werth leads the way. You got something.
If Werth doesnt go then the Phils are all in this year to try to win the WS. I am nto bothered by that at all.

I see the record George but Kendrick gets hit out the ball park. I meant a serviceable 4th/5th starter on a winning team….Yea why does everyone seem to want to get rid of Happ John I ask myself that same question..more importantly why do a lot of team show interest in him…The kid has great potential no one seems to have the patience to let him bounce back from his injury….I read that Werth was offered a contract by the Phils but didnt accept it yet….Riccaboni you have a point…just that Victorino is out there hacking like a double A player instead of taking at bats like a Major League Player….I think Werth is starting to come around..PS…I think Haren makes more sense than Osawalt…

I’d say Kendrick is a serviceable fifth starter. Wins more than he loses, doesn’t have an atrocious ERA and most importantly, is dirt cheap, which allows money to be spent on players who will actually make a difference in the playoffs. The problem with the rotation so far isn’t Kendrick, it’s that the two pitchers ahead of him were making far more than him and in one case, barely out-pitching him and in the other case, pitching far worse.

While this offensive explosion is a positive thing, I’m going to remain skeptical until they can score like this on a regular basis. I’m terrified that tomorrow they’re going to get shut out, then they’ll only score 1 the next two games. That’s how the season has been, sadly. I hope they prove me wrong.

Raul is doing great and Werth looks like he is ready to turn things around offensively. Victorino would be no great loss offensively but his defensive play in center field would be hard to replace.

Why is everyone so eager to give up Happ?
I don’t think ANYONE is eager to give him up. It’s just that to get quality, you have to trade quality.
I fear that Happ might be one of those injury-prone types. So far in his career, he’s been disabled twice with basically the same forearm issue. That’s one reason it took him a long time to get to the majors.
Also, if one believes in those more arcane sabermetric stats, they simply don’t support a consistent sub 3.00 ERA.
While I’d be perfectly happy having a healthy Happ, I wouldn’t feel that way if his arm proves fragile and he misses time nearly every year. His value is currently pretty high (although I think today’s start might make or break a possible deal) so it might be the best time to get someone for him.

To clarify: Happ pitched one game for the Phils in 2007. At the time, he was just there to fill in, and was sent down immediately. He missed most of the rest of that season with a forearm strain.
His rookie year, he was 27 years old. Last year, he missed time with a different muscle issue, and probably needed more time rehabbing than he was given; he was used sparingly once off the DL.
I’m not trying to belittle Happ, and I don’t think the front office is against him, either. I’m just pointing out some potential issues the Phils’ staff has to be concerned with, and why he’s a possible trade candidate.

Happ was actually 27 at the end of his rookie year. Sorry for the small error. I misread the month; mostly just saw the 1982 date.

was at the game last and going again today. The bats looked good last night and patient Raul is swinging a lot better hope he is about to go on a run like first half last year. I really like Happ, but I think today is big start for him hopfully he is healthy and will stay that way through out the rest of the year. If he can look anything close to last year the Phillies rotation will look pretty good. I also like Dobbs in the line up since you have Gload as your lefty off the bench. It is going to be another hot one at the bank today lets hope the bats stay that way

The official expects a Phillies deal to involve a third team that would acquire outfielder Jayson Werth.

I’m really hoping we don’t trade anyone.
I still think this team has the talent to win. If Happ can recapture his form from last year, I think the rotation is in good shape, especially the way Hamels is pitching.
(If we can fleece Arizona by getting Haren for low-level prospects, let’s do it. But it sounds like their demands are awfully high.)
Werth is starting to get hot. You can see it. Trading him now would be a huge mistake. If he walks at the end of the year, so be it. We’ll use the money on another RH bat. But right now, in this season, we need him.
If we can pick up a bullpen arm on the cheap (where’s Chan Ho Park these days?), I’m all for it.
But otherwise, what these team really needs is the best second baseman in baseball. And hopefully he’ll be back in a couple of weeks.
That should be our deadline addition—Chase Utley.

•In an update for FOX Sports, Rosenthal says the Astros are having trouble matching up with the Cardinals and Dodgers, leaving the Phillies as the most logical suitor. However, in a pair of tweets, ESPN.com’s Buster Olney reports that the Phils are exploring the possibility of swapping Werth directly for a starter if they can’t work out a deal for Oswalt or Dan Haren.
