Phils Muster Three Hits in 6-3 Loss To Atlanta

2010 Game Recaps, Posts
It was there for the taking, but the letdowns have become all too familiar. The Phillies fell short when they needed it most.
Atlanta took the middle game of the set, 6-3, striking for three in the 11th inning to seal the deal. Silent bats showed up again as Cole Hamels did his best to keep the Phils within striking distance all night long.
Hamels came within one strike of making this a relatively dominant performance. Instead, he allowed a seventh inning home run to Martin Prado, giving Atlanta a 3-2 lead. His final line would look like it always does – it left you wanting more. And it needed to be more. Hamels went seven innings, allowing those three runs while striking out eight. It was so close to being an outing that makes you definitively say, “Cole Hamels is an excellent number two starter.” However, the homer run lets doubt seep its way back in.
On the other side of the ball, the sticks were mostly silent. Yeah, they put up three on the board, but for 11 innings they could manage only three hits – three measly hits. Two came against Jair Jurrjens, who had been on the DL a week prior. Both hits, luckily, cost the Braves dearly, and allowed for the Phils to stay competitive.
The first was a line drive home run off the bat of Raul Ibanez in the first inning. The other was a Ryan Howard opposite field blast that barely stayed in the park. Howard ended up on third base with after Matt Diaz failed to corral the ball and lost it as it kicked away from him. Ryan would stay glued to that base for the rest of the inning, accentuating a puzzling trend on offense.
With no outs and a runner at third, Jayson Werth, Ben Francisco (pinch hitting for Greg Dobbs), and Wilson Valdez were unable to push a runner 90 feet for the go-ahead run. Werth had the first crack at it and simply stood there, watching five pitches pass him, including strike three. The Bearded One used to relish that sort of situation. No more. Werth is hitting just .176 with runners in scoring position this year, including .167 with a runner on third with nobody out. That’s a spot where Werth needs to connect.
In the 11th inning, the bullpen finally met its match as David Herndon crumbled for two runs, followed by Mike Zagurski allowing one more on an Eric Hinske homer. Trouble has been synonymous with the bullpen recently after it had been a source of stability for roughly two months. Now, it’s just all over the place. As is the offense.
The only constant has been the starting pitching. And while maybe it wasn’t as dominating as it could have been, Cole Hamels’s performance was absolutely enough to lead his club to victory. It’s just that three hits won’t get you there.
With a chance to close the NL East gap to just three games, the Phils dropped a winnable game and will now have to fight to stay within a reasonable distance of Atlanta.

Personally I’m fine w/Howard. He came to ST early and looked as if he was trying. I’m happy with his higher overall avg, lower weight, and somewhat better play at 1st base v just trying to power hit every ball that flies over the plate last season. I don’t have any problem with him.
Victorino…eh. I’ve never thought his arm was great or his acumen. But he’s fine in CF. For me, Ibanez’ OF play had nowhere to go but up. However, lately both he and Valdez have been hitting into double plays (Ibanez’ plays have actually gotten Werth out at 2nd & 3rd more than once). Don’t get me started on poor Juan Castro. Utley made more errors than normal for him before his injury but nobody can say he isn’t smart as hell or that he wasn’t giving 100%.
Wow, is that true about Mickey Mantle, George? I had no idea. I’ve been saying we should be more conservative regarding when & how Dom Brown is brought up. I just didn’t realize there was that brilliant back-up for it. When he is brought up, why can’t he be platooned w/Ibanez? LF isn’t as difficult as CF or RF. RF for some reason has turned into almost a GameBoy or something it’s so bad these days. (What did all these designers do to these RF spaces?) Shouldn’t Brown be able to learn it at a decently quick rate, or am I nuts?

I, for one, am not angry at Jayson Werth. I just think that if he’s gone at the end of the year, you try to get more proven prospects as opposed to a couple of draft picks.
Werth has a big problem with perception. When he strikes out, he looks awful almost like cartoon character. It’s really just the nature of the beast (The Beast?). Take it for what it is.

So there’s actually a way to look GOOD when striking out???

HA! You took the words … er …. away from my keys, Chuck. I’m not certain how one should look after having struck out, especially knowing the weight of the team is on your shoulders right then, especially feeling the literal pressure of tv cameras and a crowd of 44,000 people breathing on you. How should he look? I don’t know, he doesn’t look any worse to me than any of the other guys striking out. Victorino has almost fought with every ump in the past 3 games. Ryan Howard has also been murmurring to himself.
Under any circumstance striking out is embarrassing at best, ignominious at worst. And coming from the place Werth was 1 month ago when he was getting standing ovations from his ‘peeps’ in RF, I’m sure we can only imagine 1% of his pain & embarrassment. It’s some life, I’ll tell ya.
It’s then when I question whether or not the money is actually worth it. I like being left the heck alone. When somebody breathes down my neck I tell them to get lost. They can’t. If Werth did that – then he’s being “nasty with the press.” Brother people would hate me.

I know it sounds weird to look good when striking out, but that’s not what I’m saying. There’s a difference between looking beat and looking the way Werth does when he strikes out, which looks off-balance and out of control. Surely I am not the only one who notices this. Compare that to Utley who looks remorseful that his sweet choppy swing was wasted on the air.
As for if it’s all worth it, I would gladly keep myself in check with the media to be a multimillionaire who gets paid to stay in shape so I can play a game. That sounds pretty awesome to me. Especially if that game is baseball.

It makes me angry that every comment about Utley has nothing but praise in it ..
People would rather complaing about the .300-hitting Howard, because he ONLY has 15 HRs ..
but with Utley, everything ends in that he “gives 100% percent”
(doesn’t Howard do that by commiting to training all year long, dropping weight, and getting to camp early every season to work on defense?)
or when Utley strikesout
“looks remorseful .. his sweet choppy swing” ..etc
… Do people really not yet realize that Utley isn’t the greatest player to ever put on cleats? His average has dropped in each of the past few seasons.. he’s improved defensively but you would think that Ryan Howard SUCKS, and Chase Utley is AMAZING based on these comments .. Utley probably costs us more defensively every season then Howard does

Just like Jeter in NY, there are some fans with serious man love for Utley, who see none of his faults.

First, off, dont even read ANYTHING from “Jeff”. He is either a troll, or an idiot. I havent seen anything even close to be “intelligent” from him yet. As for Cole last night. Well it was a good start. The only run I had a problem with was the Prado Home Run. That was without a doubt a Home Run pitch. 2 strikes, and thrown Prado a pitch STRAIGHT DOWN THE MIDDLE? I am pretty sure it was even a full count either. Thats like throwing Votto a pitch like that after the 7th innings. Those two are killing everyone AFTER the 7th inning. Having said that if you have a Starting Pitcher give up 3 runs in 7 innings, and have a man stranded on 3rd base with ZERO outs! The offense is progressively swinging at worse and worse pitches as the days go on. I have no idea why everyone is blaming Ruben for keeping nearly 90% of a WS team intact, bringing in quality pitchers (fine he let one go for another slightly better pitcher). I know he has made some bade decisions, but please. If you are going to blame anyone (besides the PLAYERS) it should be a coach. Manager Charlie Manuel appears to have lost the trust, or control maybe of the players. Not sure. Milt Thompson. Hmm, well I wont even say it. But some people insist Milt is a great coach even though the Offense (excluding 1 week) has been HORRIBLE (understatement) for 8 weeks. Before blaming the GM for the WS players playing HORRIBLE, blame the players or the coaches.
As for Utley vs Howard. Don M, you have to look at the other 2nd Basemen around the league. Who is better…Cano? I dont think there is a better 2nd basemen in the NL. Now look at 1st base. Pujols, Texiera (some say Fat Boy Fielder, Im not so sure) and now Votto? Compared to other player at the same position, Utley is one of the best 2nd basemen in the league, Howard based on the same thing, is probably 3rd or 4th. Having said that, of the players on the field now, there is one ONE player with an avg OVER .280 I believe, and thats Howard. Werth dropped his avg about 60-70 points. Ibanez is still loaw, but hey, at least he raised his average about 20 points in the same amount of time Werth dropped his. Besides, if it wasnt for Ibanez last night, would the Phillies have Scored at all? Didnt he score the run off of Howards Triple? Too bad that Triple was 5 feet longer. Howards power has dropped as well. Either way, SOMEONE need to do SOMETHING and QUICK. We will more than likely end up 7-8 games back by the break.

And yes, Utley’s average is/was lower than Howard. Howard is not to blame. He has his share screw ups, but many people want to dog him because his Home Run numbers arent up yet, but look at last season. Of the players to hit OVER 30 homers on the team, he was the last of them to reach 10 and 20 homers, yet hit more home runs than any of them, and has. Not to mention, people think Howard is to blame because the rest of the offense fell asleep when he signed his contract, so it must be his fault. LOL.

I am more concerned about known relievers than a starter and sending one of our pitchers to the Pen. The only consistent real problem so far is Blanton, which I cant imagine would stay that way. Is he tipping pitches? And hopefully Happ will come back in the same was he was last season (until he had the oblique strain.

Utley may not be the greatest ever, but he may currently be the greatest in the game right now (or at least as of May 12, 2010):

Here is Ryan Howard’s WAR and calculated free market value (Dollars):

Now, take a look at Chase Utley’s WAR and calculated free market value:

Is there really an argument as to why people have problems with Howard? I do like the fact that Howard has been able to focus on other portions of his game and the fact that he has trained himself into being a better player, but I hate how well he is regarded even though it isn’t 2006 anymore. And now he gets paid the most when he is not our best or even second best player.
You know why I like Utley so much? He doesn’t showboat and he treats his job with the utmost professionalism. I just don’t get that same feeling with Howard. Maybe Utley is more modest, but the fact that I like Rollins so much undermines that theory.

Anyway, my comment was pertaining about as to why Werth has a negative perception by the public. It has to do with body language. Let’s hope for a win tonight. We surely need it!
