Halladay Blanks the Nationals

2010 Game Recaps, Posts
There’s not much to say about last night’s 1-0 win other than I’m glad they actually won. It easily could have turned into another wasted pitching performance with the offense taking the night off. Fortunately, Roy Halladay shines when there’s no margin for error.
Tossing seven shutout innings, Pitcher Perfect improved his record to 16-8 on the season and dropped his ERA to 2.16. The Nats finished the game with more hits than the Phils with Halladay scattering eight of them. It was the ninth occasion this season in which the Phillies ace did not allow a run. He did balk in the first inning, much to everyone’s surprise.
On the flip side, Nationals starter Jason Marquis is still searching for his first win of the season, although allowing just the one run certainly helped his 14+ ERA coming into the game.
The Phillies lone run came third inning and they were lucky to get even that. After a walk by Chase Utley and a single by Jayson Werth, Raul Ibanez smacked a scorcher down the first base line. It deflected off the glove of Nats first baseman Adam Dunn and trickled into foul ground to allow Utley to score.
And that was pretty much the game. Madson and Lidge finished the pitching duties without incident; and with the win, the Phils keep pace with the Braves in the division race.

Tonight we will watch Kyle Kendrick. Las Vegas has him as a decided underdog against Strasburg and his 100mph fastball. And the Braves are decided favorites against the lowly Cubs. Will we lose ground, gain ground or stay even with the Braves and maintain our lead in the Wildcard race? Let’s see if Kendrick will be a clutch performer and if we can do some damage on offense against a phenom.

I think I head the NATS broadcasters saying last night that KK has the 6th best run-support in the league. I hope it stays that way and that we can get Stras out of the game by the end of the fifth inning.

The “phenom” is losing a little bit of its’ glamour as hitters are gradually making adjustments. Welcome to the Major Leagues kid. ;-)

As Wheels said: Strasburg loves his fastball. Phils LOVE fastballs. Especially fast ones. Example: Ubaldo Jimenez. Advantage: PHILS.

If a retread like Marquis and the Nationals bullpen can silence the mighty Philly bats, then just think what Strasburg MIGHT do to us. I hope we are not in one of our offensive dives because the last two games we did indeed look pathetic at the plate. GO PHILS !!! GO KENDRICK !!!

Brian one of the truly remarkable things I saw in last nights game was a few walks given up by Roy as well – in the same inning! Roy doesn’t walk 2 batters per month let alone 2 batters in a game no less the same inning..
Gutty, gutty performance. Thank goodness, extremely crappy team we faced. A win is golden!

Bart, you’re right – did you go with PN to the opener in DC? Due to the lack of history of the club, the franchise put up banners and posters of HOF players that were nothing to the Washington area and also had a “Game stopper!” (I think that was it) of Marquis – are you kidding me??
What a joke – probably any other team that does not play down to their competition might have bombed this guy from the start but, we made him look like – well, Roy Halladay (!). Even if the Phils bats were off and Doc was almost human you would expect a 6-3 or 7-6 win… not a 1-0 squeaker!

Gillies is a moron. He flagged down a cop for a ride and the Coke fell out of his pocket.
As an aside Cliff Lee is finally mortal. 5.2 innings 8 earned runs. His era is now 3.09.
