Philadelphia Phillies (73-57) at Los Angeles Dodgers (67-64)

Roy Halladay (16-10, 2.22 ERA) vs.
Hiroki Kuroda (9-11, 3.56)

Time: 10:10 p.m at Dodger Stadium

Weather: Mostly Sunny, 67

This is what sets 2010 apart for the Phillies.

Faced with a similar position the past two seasons – heading into a big road series in need of wins, the Phillies would have had one hot starting pitcher (Cole Hamels in 2008, Cliff Lee in 2009) and a grab bag (Brett Myers and Joe Blanton ’08, Hamels and Pedro Martinez in ’09) for the rest of the series.

But not this year. This is why they got Roy Halladay and then added Roy Oswalt. Not to slight Kyle Kendrick, a serviceable fifth starter, but with the ability to hand the ball to Halladay and Oswalt heading into a key series – whether it’s at Dodger Stadium or Yankee Stadium – you have to like the Phillies’ chances.

Tonight it’s Halladay’s turn, and if anyone can maintain the staff’s momentum after an overpowering series against the first-place Padres, it’s Halladay. He’s been so dominant since his Sunday night clunker against at Wrigley Field in mid-July, until last week it seemed he might not lose the rest of the season. But then a bloop single and the Phillies’ inability to score in the Astros series ended that bid (Amazing bonus stat: Halladay has failed to pitched at least seven innings only four times this season).

But no matter how well Halladay pitches, the offense has to score runs. And before their five-run “explosion” yesterday, the Phillies hadn’t scored that many runs in a week. The struggles of Jimmy Rollins and Shane Victorino from the left side of the plate – and from Ryan Howard and Chase Utley in general – are a major threat to the Phillies’ playoff hopes with each day they continue.

Your Gameday Beer – Philadelphia Original Lager

Philadelphia Original LagerBrewed by Red Bell Brewery out of the Brewerytown neighborhood of Philadelphia, this beer is a classic microbrew lager. It’s a bit heavier than Yuengling, with more of a roasted malt flavor and some sweet coffee and caramel hints. Its supreme drinkability coupled with a pour that looks like iced tea means you can sneakily house several of these bad boys. Have your favorite pasta with some marinara sauce and a few Philly Lagers. – By Brian

    Biz
Like I said before other threads for this.
But there is a budget and that 5 million is a good quality reliever.
Cabrera is 20 million gonzalez is 20 million. Howard is probably not as good as either at 25.
No its not my money but there is also a budget and you cant over pay too much. BTW I think all professional athletes are underpaid so dont tell me I am jealous. I am just saying it isnt unlimited.
    thanks Jeff
    for getting that started

I know the contract well. Its about 20% too high.
I personaly would like to have that 20% for some other players.
But it is what it is.
Like I said got 5 years to discuss it and I will be hoping he earns every penny of that contract.

    Ha Jeff
Always makes me laugh when you stand up for squirrel hair.
I can almost tolerate him now. But stuff like tonight is super annoying.

So can young Dom Brown be a hero

  • Posts: 0 Andrew from Waldorf

hes maybe best catcher in league at handling staff and defense.

jeff… seriously u need 2 chill wit the negativity… its not the end of the world… yes we all want 2 see the phils get a hit in every single at bat but thats not realistic… & everybody who slams wheels… stop… i agree he sounds lik an idiot sometimes but at the same time he rly knows the game & is a tribute 2 older times wen color analysts werent all former players… one of the few in the MLB who never played

    Bring in Broxton

  • Posts: 0 Andrew from Waldorf

    Me but jeff defends wheeler

    seriously how awesome is that?

That was awesome. Frankly, I would have prefered Fransisco who can drive the ball. Sweeney has driven one ball since joining the team. That was yesterdays meaningless home run.

screw you charlie. give the kid a chance instead of using up your bench. You have no idea how to use a bench period

  • Posts: 0 Andrew from Waldorf

    josh its simple lefty righty
    and sweeneys homer wasnt meaningless

I more make fun of wheelers hair/dead squirrel than anything. Hes fun to goof on. I really dont try to be mean spirited about it.
I am a follower of broadcasting and if he had a broadcasting voice I think id have a different opinion of him. For me its the biggest issue I have. How do you go 35 years as a broadcaster with no communications degree, never playing the game and no voice for broadcasting?

10 losses with a 2.27 ERA. This offense is disgraceful.

Just wait til we get Utley back.

andrew… my wheeler comment wasnt targeted directly at jeff but more towards everyone in general… & i agree that he has some issues but give the guy a break… some ppl rly rag on him hard (i havent seen it as much lately but i used 2 see it a lot on here & tonight was reminiscent of those times)

    and howard

    and Werth

it doesn’t matter Brown can hit lefties. Charlie just has not given him the chance.

and Rollins….. I can’t wait til we get our entire team off the DL.

    That’s where they are, right?

biz… im startin 2 think utley & howard never came off… i mean their bodies did but their playin abilities r def still hurt… but on 2nd thought im thinkin utley jus never showed up this season cuz he wasnt doin spectacularly prior 2 his injury (in terms of norm utley production… i think… i dont remember exactly tho so i may b wrong)

Me hes a bad broadcaster. That is what it is.
Im not going to sugar coat it.
But hes ours and you can goof on him and have fun with it.
Hes not so bad (mccarver) that Id watch the other teams feed.
He does have knowledge I will agree. Alot of the things I thnk he says and when I say things he says them after alot.
Hes just a very polished broadcaster after 35 years.
He also give bad chemistry. Mccarthy suffers from it and the old guys used to too. Hes hard for the other announcer to work with.

me, Utley has not been Utley this season. He hasn’t been much better than Valdez. That’s the truth.
