2010 Game Recaps, Posts
It wasn’t the huge outpour of offense Philly fans have grown accustomed to in the past couple years. But last night for the Phillies; it worked. Locking up three runs on three hits was all Joe Blanton (6-6, 5.15) needed to get just his fourth decision in his last 12 starts. He is 3-1 in those decisions.
Shane Victorino had two of the three hits for the Phillies. Jayson Werth was the beneficiary of Victorino’s two hits scoring each time. Not to be out done, Shane also scored a run on a Mike Sweeney ground ball and saved another throwing out Nick Hundley trying to score in the fifth.
Padres’ starter Jon Garland (13-9, 3.29) pitched well going into the seventh inning allowing three runs, hits, and walks. His offense just couldn’t get anything together for him. Their lone run came on an RBI single by Garland.
The Phillies will look for the sweep later today sending the San Diego native Cole Hamels to the hill in a matchup of lefties. Clayton Richard will throw for the Padres. The Phillies are still two games back in the NL East but lead the Giants by a game and a half for the Wild Card.

Great opportunity today with Josh Johnson going for FLA v. Lowe for Braves. If we can just scratch one more out for a sweep in SD, that would make up for the Astros series. It will be tough Clayton Richard only 3 earned runs allowed in last 3 outings.
Cole deserves a win!
Go Phils

Did anyone else happen to listen to the Fox Broadcast? It was an absolutely pathetic love affair for San Diego. You couldn’t get through a half an inning without them mentioning how great of an organization/team they are, how they had such a great turnout (considering 1/2 of the crowd was wearing red and outcheered SD fans), and then basically making it seem like they were letting the Phils win this one because they are that good.

I understand the Padres have a very solid pitching rotation and bullpen. Thats as far as it goes. There offense outside of the big guy is pathetic. Good pitching will shut that team down. If we get the wildcard and play them we should have no problem with our three guys going.

ChiSox, RedBirds, RedLegs. But I have never heard Friars and as far as I am concerened, if Harry Kalas didn’t recognize a nickname, it didn’t exist. Chuck – Harry was big on the “Bravos”.

I will tell you dipsy. I have been calling them the friars since forever. I will explain it ot you…
Padre means Father in Spanish, both referring to a Catholic priest. A friar is a brother or monk, meaning a person who has joined a monastic order. All that aside, the San Diego Padres also refer to themselves as the Friars. The post game radio show on 1090 in San Diego is the Friar Hour. It doesn’t have to be religiously correct, it’s just baseball.

Cmon y’all. I KNOW what a friar is and I KNOW that their mascot is some monkish, friarish guy. Maybe its a provincial thing. Thats cool. If it is, I might start calling them Friars every once in awhile myself…..but if I do, and someone asks me who the hell I’m talking about, I’ll blame you guys. Is the friar Franciscan or Jesuit, btw?

I vote Franciscan. Just a feeling I have.
Now that you mention it, Dipsy, I can hear Harry saying that. Bra-vOOOOs. Buc-OOOOs. (my Harry Kalas voice in type)

Dipsy, this one’s better, more complete:
“Spanning the globe to bring you the constant variety of sport. The thrill of victory and the agony of defeat. The human drama of athletic competition. This is ABC’s Wide World of Sports.”
My spine’s tingling hearing Jim McKay saying that.

What about Lidge getting a 1-2-3 yesterday to end the game. The three most criticized Phils lately came through big time yesterday with timely hitting, defense, and pitching. Love the fact that we won the game with only three hits. Our starters have been nothing short of outstanding lately. When they do have a bad game, which is inevitable, the offense better pick them up as the starters are the only reason we are within striking distance and leading the Wild Card.

Regarding the question on team nickname for San Diego Padres; “Friars” is seldom used by hometown fans or the media. The nickname most often heard for the Padres is “Pods” especially in the media. Pods rhymes with PA-dres.
Also the Orioles fans often described their team as “The Birds” more often than simply “O’s”.

The California Missions were started by a Franciscan Padre named Junipero Serra in, you guessed it, San Diego! So I would assume that the Pads, Friars, Monks (short for monkeys?) would be Franciscan.
I only wonder why some freedom-of-religion types haven’t taken this team to court over that religious connection, or the Catholics haven’t complained about that stupid mascot out there mocking the Church. At least years ago they only had a religion-neutral Chicken. I suppose he’s now McNuggets, though.
You just can’t win!

“Pods” might rhyme with Pa-dres, but Pods are also those diabolical alien seed things that take over people’s souls and bodies while they sleep. I think I’ll stay away from San Diego, especially when I’m tired.

Pods also refers to PODS….the portable storage company. Stands for Portable On Demand Storage.
I think the Padres nickname is spelled Pads??
