Clutch Chooch Caps 8-Run Comeback

2010 Game Recaps, Posts

If you thought last night was vintage Phils, then this is what keeps you coming back. Another incredible victory by a team that does not give up – not when players are hurt, not when your starter coughs up 3 runs in the first, and certainly not when facing an 8-run deficit with just 6 outs remaining. This was an awesome game!

Much to everyone’s dismay, it began with Joe Blanton pitching the Phillies into a 3-0 hole before they even came to bat. He settled down as the game advanced before leaving with 2 outs in the fifth and finished with 4 ER, 8 H, 4 BB, 3 K plus an RBI. Still the tone for the first 7.5 innings were set by that initial one. The Dodgers held the lead 9-2 heading into the bottom of the eighth. Then the real game began.

The Phillies batted around. Single. Single. Wild Pitch. Balk. Double. Ground out. Single. Fly out. Walk. Ground out. And just like that the game was 9-6 and the team was within striking distance. Danys Baez pitched the top of the ninth and was able to get Scott Podsednik to ground into a double play to take command of the inning. As the game headed into the bottom of the ninth Welcome to Jungle blared like it was the final face-off of a close Flyers game. Fans were rowdy and believing.

On the mound was a familiar antagonist, Jonathan Broxton. I doubt his number is listed in the phone book, but the Phillies certainly have it…and probably on speed dial. The Phils lineup locked in on his fastball and slider and held off the balls – well, except for the one that hit Placido Polanco to start off the inning. Mike Sweeney and Jayson Werth followed up with walks to load the bases. This prompted Joe Torre to visit the mound and ask Broxton, “Do you trust your stuff?” An affirmative answer kept him in the game. Then Ben Francisco knocked a grounder to left side of the infield that bounced straight through third-baseman Casey Blake’s legs. Two runs scored and the Phils were down just a run with runners on first and second, and no outs for Carlos Ruiz. In the post-game interview Chooch said he knew he was getting a slider, and since he’s a superb catcher, I certainly believe him. He smacked the pitch off the left-centerfield wall to score Werth and Francisco. The Phillies walked off with a valiant 10-9 come-from-behind victory.

With the Braves off tonight, the Phillies creep to just 2 games back in the NL East.

Notes… Shane Victorino walked and stole second in as a pinch hitter in the seventh inning.

This reminded me a lot of the classic game the Phillies played with the Mets in 2007, where the bullpen let it get out of hand and the Phillies won on a walk off hit after making a crazy comeback.

Though I think this may have been better. We have a bunch of reserves up here right now, and they are coming through in amazing ways. Carlos Ruiz? There is no doubt in my mind that he is the MVP of this team.

Me and my dad always believe that when the phillies are losing like then did before the come back that its our fault so we either stop watching or leave the game. And almost always when they no they have a comeback like this. I remember we were at the Reds comeback game this year and we decided to leave it early one they were losing and two we were heading strait to the beach. And we had a feeling leaving the ball park that something great world happen and sure enough it did. Same with this game only difference was I just kept checking mlb at bat and they I was on mlb at bat though the entire bottom of 9th inning and I was like OMG it happened again and then I turned on the tv only to find that they had won. Now u may not call me a die hard phillies fan but I am i just believe in a lot of supersitions and one of them is stop watching or leave the game and yea will have an unbelieveable comeback.

IMO, that game was more amazing than Halladays perfect game. Not only did they come back from 8 runs against a pretty solid team, they did it with broken legs (referernce to all the injuries). These last few years we’ve really been a thorn in the Dodgers side, and this offense has really been kryptonite to Broxton. The Phillies are only going to get stronger as a team once Howard, Utley, and Victorino are all back in the lineup.

The Braves got to be shitting in their pants right now after seeing tonights game. They know were on their asses, and there going to be chasing the wildcard spot by the end of August

    So unbielavable.
I remember on here people calling for Marson and Id have a fit telling them about Ruiz and how if he hit .200 hes worth playing every day.
I supported the Lee trade soley to lose Marson and solidify Ruiz.
This guy is the captain and a hall of famer. The team MVP and should be league. Most people do not understand the sport. Thats why they thought the Mets with K rod and Beltran were the team to beat.
You win with carlos Ruiz and his career 85 homers and .250 avg. You lose with Mike Piazza and his .308 average and 427 homers.
He will never even be considered for the hall. Because its about numbers. Piazza will go first or second ballot. Ill take Ruiz over Piazza. Ill take Victorino over Beltran. Ill see you in the winners circle.

Absolute insanity. Hopefully this carries over to the Mets series. We need at least 2 out of 3 and some help from the Dodgers in ATL.

We play the Braves 6 of our last 9 games. None of them will matter.

I agree terry, I hope their pitching flops because it’s carrying them. Offensive teams have more fun!

The Braves are legitimate. Unlike the Mets but they will fold up. Will just be tougher. The Jones injury is a huge help to Braves haters. Not for his on field value but the clubhouse value.

I agree that the Braves are legitimate, but they have started to falter ever so slightly. They aren’t the same team from June. Pitching is not quite as strong and that offense is pretty sad. I’m hoping the Dodgers can pull of a split down there.

I watched the game from a local CBS affiliate (i was interning) and the whole newsroom was watching from the 8th inning onward. it was awesome. the 10 pm newscast got cancelled, but no one cared. we were all happily watching the dodgers bp blow

The date was August 21, 1990. I made a spur-of-the-moment decision from my L.A. apartment to go to Dodger Stadium; the Phillies were in town. I found myself sitting along the 3rd base line, in with a bunch of Dodger fans (of course). It’s 3-1 Dodgers. Then it’s 5-1 … then 9-l in the 5th inning, with runners on base. I say to the guy next to me, “If this next guy gets a hit, I’m outta here.” The next guy gets a hit, making it 11-1, and I leave. Final score: Phillies 12, Dodgers 11, capped by Krukie’s 3-run dinger in a 9-run 9th. Here’s the box score:

    Philadelphia 0 1 0 0 0 0 0 2 9 – 12 11 3
    Los Angeles 0 1 2 0 8 0 0 0 0 – 11 15 4

Today, August 12, 2010, I’m walking along the beach in Playa del Rey, just outside of L.A. On my Walkman I hear 1st inning – Phillies down by 3. “OK,” I think, “The team has heart, and it’s early.” I check the game periodically and, as you all know, the Phillies trail throughout. By the 8th inning, they’re down 9-2. With the recollection firmly in mind of that fateful August 1990 day, I figure that, trailing the Dodgers by 7 in the 8th inning, the Phillies have L.A. right where they want them. Sensing the Dodgers’ imminent doom and smug in my confidence of the final outcome, I turn on the tube and watch the final two innings on local TV.

The rest, as they say, is history.

Let us hope that this kind of loss experienced by the Dodgers fires them up for tomorrow’s game against Atlanta and their pitcher Hudson. Go LA in Atlanta!

I’m afraid the loss is going to deflate the Dodgers, and that may hurt us when they play Atlanta.

Amazing team, and this team deserves a better bullpen. I’m sure Amaro has already been on the phone scouring for relief pitchers who could make waivers. We’re going to need it to be World Champs in 2010.

put contrares into the starter role to replace kendrick – put kendrick in the bullpen – bring back martinez to replace balnton in the starter role – put blanton in the bull pen – bring back eyre – so bullpen: kendrick, blanton, durbin, eyre, madson, lidge – and 1 more out of worley, zagursky, bastardo – get rid of baez, herndon, romero – and go win pennant and series!!

get rid of baez, herndon, and romero!!! – seen enough – this is ridiculous given the potential of this team with oswalt now in the saddle and howard and utley on the way back and ibanez and werth hitting again and chooch playing the way he’s been playing!! – bring back martinez and put him and contreras in the starting rotation to replace kendrick and blanton and move them into the pen! – much stronger!! – oh and bring back eyre – so the bullpen would be: eyre, blanton, kendrick, durbin, madson, lidge – and one of worley, zagurski, bastardo -or pick some else up like that guy from the orioles! – and then go win the pennant and the series!!!!

loupossehl: I too was at that game!

I am a Drexel boy that went to UCLA for graduate school. An old friend in the area was a Dodgers fan so we went to the game. We started in the cheap seats but, as the score widened and all the LA folk left early, we moved down into the seats close to home plate. Dodger stadium sounded like an empty echo chamber as I clapped and cheered as the Phillies pulled out the victory. Yes, that game felt good (particularly after all those playoff losses to them in the 70s).

Now I am in Germany, which is six hours ahead of Philadelphia, but last night I stayed up until the very end, until almost 5 AM, to see this game through to the end (watching live on mlb.com).

One simple rule: Never give up on the Phillies!

Some teams have a season of destiny. This team is a true team of destiny. Devastating injuries to nearly every key player? No problem. Entire infield of AAAA guys? No problem. Deflating off-season trade of top pitcher? No problem; just go get Oswalt. Seven-run deficit going into the bottom of the eighth? No problem.

    3x World Series. Believe it.

I don’t feel bad about the bullpen, no-ones perfect and the better ones usually come at the cost of something else. The answer is can the bullpen be stable enough to win enough games and to me the answer is yes, it’s the blown saves when the game is in your favor that’ll kill you.

Chooch is definitely one of my favorite players. Without that guy, do we win the Series in 2008? I don’t know. In fact, probably not. This is the guy that hits an infield single when they have 5 infielders. Wow.

Special thanks goes out to Jonathan Broxton. That guy has become a major part of some of my favorite Phillies memories. Let’s see, Stairs’ HR, Rollins’ walk-off, and now Chooch’s walk-off. Doesn’t get much better than that.

Really would like to see the bullpen tighten up, especially Romero. All told, that was a lot of runs to give up to a light-hitting team that hadn’t exactly been thumping lately…

Does anyone know what the dodgers were arguing about after choochs hit that the umpire made the safe signal while the Phillies were celebrating?

    Incredible game!
I honestly do not believe that the Phils will do anything with their BP – just because Cholly gets that way. I still believe they can win it all, regardless.

    BTW Dipsy, profound dude!

Dipsy- there was a local band that played in the concourse before Game 5 of the WS in 2008; they did that song and changed some lyrics… it was awesome and the crowd was rocking but your lyrics were better.

What a friggin game… are you kidding me? My wife asked me to turn the TV off at 9:45… it was 7-2 at that point so I did but I soon realized that I wasn’t going to be able to fall asleep; like I’ve said so many times, you don’t quit on this team because they don’t have it in them to lay down. So I went downstairs and watched the madness by myself. That win is so important… if you don’t think that the Braves were nervous before last night, they certainly are now.

Do you think that Charlie letting Ruiz swing away with men on first and second with no outs was his way of admitting that he should not have sac bunted with Polly last weekend?

@Fish55: Dodgers were arguing for a call on Ruiz’s hit to the wall as a ground rule double claiming a fan touched the ball. That was just a last gasp desperation effort by the Dodgers. :-)

Understandably a lot of euphoria here for a great comeback win. What seems lost or ignored here is another implosion by Phillies’ middle relief pitching. Unfortunately, that remains an albatross for the team and can be the difference between 1st and 2nd place at season’s end no matter how good the offense is.

@Bruce, thanks. I was at the game and thought that they were either arguing a fan touched the ball or maybe that Fransisco passed Werth, but it didn’t look like either happened. Definitely desparation time for them.

At some point I felt crappy about it all and turned down the sound but I told myself I’ve felt this same way off and on about this team all season and I’m not giving up now. This is just the type of game they used to love to come back on. Then Bellisario was pitching to Werth and I said outloud, “If JDub gets on, I bet we win this . . .” Of course I live alone so nobody heard me, but I said it! He had some crazy look in his eyes, I don’t know. He was on the make all night – he stole 2nd (which helped get that 2nd run in). Then he griped and got the balk called. Later Verducci & Costas (I had to watch on MLB) kept raising Broxton’s name and saying, “Well Torre has to bring Broxton in, I know he’s trying to save him, but…” as if that would stop all the ‘dreamy’ nonsense the Phillies fans had about winning. Now I’m sure my neighbors think I’m nuts b/c I yelled, “OH YES! Bring on Broxton. We OWN HIM!” Then I knew we’d win, no doubt in my mind.

Thinking of buying a Broxton jersey. No kidding. How hilarious. That poor poor man. He must hate red & white & just see it in his nightmares

I just had that weird feeling when they got down 9-2 that it might just happen. I slumped in my seat on the sofa, shook my head and said ” If it wasn’t over before, it just about is now, BUT, they’ve come back before from a deficit like this”. My wife said “that’s true” and we watched as the miracle unfolded. Of course, I was one who called for chooch to bunt. I guess that’s why I’m sitting at home watching…..

The other game that I remember was a game in the mid 90′s at the Vet against the Pirates. I was at the game as Tyler Green got lit up early, and the Phillies trailed 7-1 before a lengthy rain delay followed. Being from just north of Baltimore, my wife and I decided to leave. It was a week night game, and we both had to get up early. As we drove down 95, the time was about 11:40 as the bottom of the ninth started. A couple of walks, hits, a Doug Glanville triple, and then, the dramatic pinch hit 3-run homer by Mike Lieberthal ended the wild comeback as we were getting off our exit. Screaming in the car, going absolutely bonkers, I couldn’t believe that we left the game early. It’s something we never did before, and have never done since. So, the thought of turning this one off before the end, never entered my mind. We have PHAITH in our PHILS. Do you?

Agree with you, Bruce. In this series the Dodgers exposed the weakness in the Phillie’s pitching in regards to their 4th and 5th starters and middle relief. From the box score last night, it looks like the Dodgers only had one extra base hit out of their total of fifteen hits, which was Kemp’s home run. Not much power on that team but big on the small ball with the addition of Podsednik, Theriot and Carroll, and great team speed.

    Frederick -

It’s interesting to compare the box scores for these two miracle-rally games.

    August 21, 1990:
    Philadelphia 0 1 0 0 0 0 0 2 9 – 12 11 3
    Los Angeles 0 1 2 0 8 0 0 0 0 – 11 15 4

    August 12, 2010
    Los Angeles 3 0 0 0 1 0 2 3 0 – 9 15 1
    Philadelphia 0 1 0 1 0 0 0 4 4 – 10 12 2

The similarities are almost spooky: The two games were within a few days of being exactly 20 years apart. First 3 innings – teams combine for a total of 4 runs. Last 2 innings – teams combine for a total of 11 runs. Similar error profiles (neither game was a fielding masterpiece). In both games, Dodger hitters rake Phillies pitching for 15 hits. Phillies get 11 hits in one game, 12 in the other. For the astronomically inclined, perhaps this all has something to do with the Perseids meteor shower. For those who believe in karma, kabala and numerology … if I am a Dodger fan and if the Phillies play the Dodgers in mid-August of 2030 when the Perseids are in the heavens, I’d be making plans right now to hide under the bed.

I see that you’re in Germany. In mid-late May of this year, my wife and I vacationed in Geneva and Provence. If you happened to be around there at that time – and since you and I were in Dodger stadium on that fateful August 1990 day – then something weird is indeed going on. Auf weidersehen -
