Phillies can’t back Halladay, continue three game skid

2010 Game Recaps, Posts

For the second time in this series, the Phillies were beaten by a former teammate. Tonight came in the form of JA Happ (4-2, 3.45). Happ was sent to Houston in a trade in which Philadelphia acquired left fielder and part time pitcher, or err you know, Roy Oswalt.

Happ did receive a nice ovation from the home crowd when he left the game after throwing 6 1/3 innings allowing five hits and two runs. Happ had not allowed a run until Jayson Werth hit his 17th home run of the season over the left field wall. Four relievers cleaned up the rest on way to a 3-2 victory for Houston.

The Phillies sent Roy Halladay (16-9, 2.22) to the mound who was looking to add to his recent hot streak. He came in winning his last six decisions and having not allowed a run in 15 innings. The scoreless streak ended at 18 when Hunter Pence hit a home run in the fourth inning for the first run of the game. Halladay finished with seven innings allowing three runs on six hits.

Doc is still in the running for the pitching triple crown (leader in wins, ERA, strikeouts) leading the NL in strikeouts and second in wins and ERA.

The Phils have only managed six runs this entire series, the exact amount they used to finish off Washington in the series finale Sunday. The bats need to come back tomorrow before Philadelphia heads out west for three game series against the Padres and Dodgers. They also stop in Colorado for a make-up game before coming home.

How pathetic can the offense get? The article is 100% correct, the Offense needs to figure out how to hit the little white thing called a baseball. I would like to think this is mearly the offense doing what they normally do against the lowly Astros at CBP and thats NOTHING. What are the Astros record at CBP, something like 17 and 5 or something ridiculous. Come on, this is Houston. It is NOT acceptable to be swept (which I can almost guarantee we will be seeing how Kendrick is on the mound.) I think the Phillies need to send Kendrick back to the minors before every start, because when they do that, he comes back pissed and is spot on for 1 start, then back to the KK we have come to know and loathe…excluding his Rookie Season. But I guess it could be worse, could be Adam Eaton. On a side note, I sure am glad we offered the good contract to Blanton, and gave Myers the boot. Also glad we got rid of Happ (SARCASM). Oh well, maybe the offense will step up and give Kendrick the 6+ runs he will need for a win, but maybe Kendrick will only give up 3 runs seeing how we are playing the Astros. We should have won the first 3 games…Had we dont that, we would be back in first place.

Now lets just hope the Cardinals somehow lose to the Nats. If the Phillies lose and the Cardinals win, we will be tied with the Cardinals for 2nd in the Wild Card race. Giants are currently tied with us for the top spot in the Wild Card race, and they do not play tomorrow. We will either be in sole possesion of the Wild Card, or be 1/2 game back again. I would say we need to play a BAD team to get some easy wins, but we are playing a bad team. Oh well, so much for that theory. I hope this just the typical slump against the Astros at CBP, and the bats will wake back up.

The Giants aren’t really tied with us for the WC, Brian. True, we’re even in the GB, but they have played 2 more games than us. We have the higher winning %.

We can all complain about not capitalizing on the Braves simultaneous losses….and that’s justified….

    …but…

Imagine how we would all feel right now if the Braves had WON their last 3 games…

Still 2.5 out…good striking distance….6 games vs them head to head….in Sept. when everyone should be in sync.

    I love this team’s chances.

Hey, in baseball, good teams lose to bad teams, and everyone knows that. But what’s frustrating is that this is not the time to slump like this. They Phillies already had weeks of “slumping”. Injuries were kind of a good excuse too. But now everyone is back in the line up, and while it may take awhile for the stars to get their timing back, what frustrates fans who watch every game is the lack of hustle and drive.

Fact is, the Phils looked pathetic in the games against Washington and Houston.

The offense folded in the World Series against the Yankees too.

Charlie was about as frustrated last night as I’ve ever seen him. We have emboldened the Braves by this kind of play…..

    “Emboldened the Braves”???

Uhhhh…the Braves aren’t exactly playing like a championship team either. THEY had a chance to extend their division lead the last three nights and didn’t.

    Will Howard reach 30 hrs?
    Will Utley get to 20?
    Will Ibanez get to 20?
    Will Worth get to 25?

Stupid questions at the start of the season right?

Realistically folks, don’t you believe as I do that the Phils need to head into the 5th inning with at least a 6-2 lead? And more runs on the way?

This is too much – I am pondering my Post season invoice

answers to all the questions you listed…

    Yes
    No
    No
    Maybe

It doesn’t really matter though…because…answer THIS question:

Will the Phillies make the playoffs? I still say yes.

    Brooks, no pondering needed.

@Bob. I am singing very loud. i am a man of faith (LOL) no really I am.

Lets see some fire tonight!!! If Chase is such a quick heal, he should be batting great soon. It took J-roll 4-6 weeks to start doing anything offensively. He is now good for at least one or two good bats per game. Its ridiculous when we are all just begging for one good bat or inning out of our guys in each of the last 3-5 games.

I got worried a week ago when I was at the twins game watching Dan Haren absolutely get creamed by the twins offense. I looked at the score of the phillies game and it was 1-0. You know what I was thinking then, and here we are it is till happening. Barely any runs…It feels like June again for some games, that is for sure. At least Werth got a Homer last night and Yimmy the night before. We didn’t see that much in June

Brooks there in lies the problem this was a HR team that isnt hitting HR’s. The Phils always struggled with getting men to score w/o the long ball. Its just becoming more evident this year because the lack off HR. Mean while Vic and Rollins are trying to swing for the fences. Even without the HR this team should be more than capable of scoring a few runs. They have showed flashes of comebacks. The Phils where always a comeback team. Where they would seemingly come around in the 7th or so. Maybe Cholly should start defining roles OK Vic an Rollins you two are our speed guys. Let the HR comes from Howard, and Werth Ibanez. Everyone you hit the dam ball somewhere other than to shortstop for a double play. I dont think there is much Cholly can do other than lighting an occasional fire under someone ass. No one perceived that the offense was going to be a problem at start of the year everyone worried about the bull pen and our starters after Halladay. Although our bullpen is still on paper our weakness Cholly seem to have found a way around this to a point.

the reverse choke?? mets got caught in 07 when they said during at bad stretch sometime late 1st half/after all-star game”we’re so good that sometimes we get bored” phils look down on their opps. and once again they got what they deserved.

Yeah, I’m sick and tired of watching Vic act like some great slugger every single time he comes up. JUST PUT THE BALL IN PLAY. Unless they see absolute beachballs floating in there, Vic and J-Roll should be just trying to get on base. That’s it.

Tough spot for Brown to be in last night. Talk about pressure placed on his shoulders. At some point in his career, however, we’re gonna see him end games like that with some blasts.

I just dont think its there year. I just hope our big boys are not declining. Thats going to be very bad. This team lost there edge.

These have been some incredibly frustrating games for the Phils. I hope they can pull it together they have been in High Pressure situations plenty of time of the past 3 years. Hopefully experience and perseverance pays off if any group can it should be these guys here. The Rockies are starting to scare me I always said dont count them out the talent is there.

So this series our starters have gone:
    7 IP, 1 run
    7 IP, 2 runs
    7 IP, 3 runs

And we couldn’t even win one of those games. Very pathetic.

YOU LOST THREE IN A ROW TO HOUSTON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! DO YOU KNOW IF THEY WIN TONIGHT THEY HAVE THERE LONGEST WINNING STREAK OF THE SEASON>>>> AND WORSE THAN THAT… ITS AT YOUR HOUSE??? How do you let someone come into you home and beat you like that???

One last question…. How does the Braves rear ends look??? I mean I Dont get to see it much and yall have been behind it alll year, so I was wondering if you coul inform me please..

“That was a bad play,” Manuel said. “It’s been addressed.”

Francisco left the ballpark before reporters entered the clubhouse.

Why cant these spoiled brats stick around and answer for the dumb play. Its a disgrace what happen with Werth and Fran. There is no excuse in the world for getting thrown out in those two plays. No focus at all. I wish we had a leadoff hitter. Rollins is not. Look at Bourne when he gets on. Its almost an automatic run. This team better start hitting soon. We were winning every game then our lineup goes back to normal and no hitting. Maybe they rely so much on our big guys. We had a nice flow going. This has been our problem all season. Sick to get swept so far by the Stros.

With run support Hamels would have like 12 wins and Halladay would probably have 20. Can’t say enough about how well those two have pitched.

Every time Shane Victorino swings wildly at the first pitch he should be fined $1000. I’m sick of it.

And the Ben Fran play was STOO-PID. What made it worse was that it came the night after the bonehead mistake by Werth.

Memo to Phillies baserunners: Watch and learn!!

I don’t understand how the Phils have become so bad at baserunning. I mean, even if they don’t feel like stealing, it’s the stupid plays getting picked off. It’s really awful.

I had a feeling like this was going to happen against the Astros. WHY DO THEY ALWAYS GIVE US SO MUCH TROUBLE?!

Yet we swept the Astros in Houston earlier. We are now 3-3 vs the second worse club in the NL.

This team doesn’t deserve to make the playoffs. The offense and baserunning are a disgrace.

What are the chances of seeing Atlanta drop three in a row again, while the Phillies are playing a 4-A team at home? This was a backbreaker. We’re right back to where we were in May, with the offense a lifeless incompetent mess, and it starts at the top — i.e., with Rollins.

Either he or Victorino has got to go next year. They’re just too similar, in both strengths and vulnerabilities: they both have good speed on the basepaths, pop at the plate, and they’re both above-average in the field. But their batting averages are mediocre and on-base percentages are appalling. Having one of them is useful, but we need a traditional plate-setter at the top of the lineup. Then again, what good is that if the middle of the lineup is so hot-and-cold?

    36 games left. Crunch time.

    Win today. A MUST!!!

Win 2 of 3 the rest of the way, splitting the 4-game series with FLA and winning the make-up with COL.

That gives the Phillies 24 more wins for a total of 94. That’s .667 baseball (24-12) the rest of the way.

I have been saying all along that to win the division they need 95.

    Does 94 get it done??

I’m thinking the primary changes we will see are:
Werth gone, Brown starting in RF –
Lidge gone (his arm will fall off) -

Anything else your guess is as good as mine.

How about a version of Utley that we fell in love with.
We will see an average Ryan Howard (no more superstar, even if its in his own mind).
Hopefully we’ll see Vic back to his .290 days.
We’ll probably see an older Ibanez in right, no Ben Francisco, no Romero –
Another 130-135 games out of Poly and
a Chooch that will hit .250 or so.

I don’t think neither the Phils nor the Braves will win 95, or even 94. Not when they’re battling each other in September.

Lidge won’t be gone….AND….he’s been pitching well lately.

    Romero? Good-bye.

Utley and Howard are not major concerns. Both will be fine.

    Vic??? Who knows???

Ibanez will be here but that’s ok if Brown is that infusion of youth that the team needs.

I hate to see Werth go…but I agree that he probably does.

I’ll take 135 games from Polly hitting .315.

Chooch. What’s not to like looking at next year?? He’s like the backbone of this team.

I don’t disagree about Lidge he is pitching great but with all the shots he’s taken, the fall off in velocity – this has to be close to the end for him.

Brad Lidge for the month of August (so far!) has an ERA of 0.00
    No way to improve that.

Right now pitching is the LEAST of this team’s concerns. Even Danys Baez is pitching well!!

Hitting….and LACK OF FOCUS sometimes is the problem.

I think give it another few games and this lineup will start to fire on all cylinders. Remember…Howard and Utley are still essentially rehabing.

Its the sheer innovation they have in finding new areas in which to screw up… I mean, baserunning now? Seriously, guys? Do they have meetings before a series and discuss which fundamental part of baseball they will ignore? I’m not “Its not their year” guy, but things like that make you wonder just who in the hell you’re watching out there.

This isn’t the LLWS, right? These are grown men who’ve been running base paths since they were preteens? Okay, just checking. Because… wow.

I think we overrated Mr. Werth. Last season he batted .265. He did have homers and rbis. This season he started hot and thank god for that. He is now 7-109 with runners in scoring postion. That is pathetic. He is a good fielder but like Vic he makes some bonehead moves. He gets caught napping at second. He swings for the fences everytime up. He has become a jerk to the fans. I just want him gone already. Let the Yankees give him 15 to 19 million a year. Not WERTH it. With him, moyer coming off the books we have some money. I like Brown but we need a righty at bat. Maybe try and ship Raul out.

EVERYBODY SETTLE DOWN. THE TEAM IS FINE! Not good losing to a team that is 10+ under .500 but these guys can and will hit.
And when they do they could get on a massive run that will end on broad street in late october on floats again.
    GET A GRIP GUYS!

What is wrong with some of you?

They are 22-8 in their last 30 games even counting this debacle of a series so far with a Houston team that I believe is 39-34 under Brad Mills?

The last 3 games have been frustrating for all.

Someone name me the last 3 game losing streak before this?

    IT HAPPENS, this is baseball.

Move on, focus on today’s game. Time for good Kyle to show up today.

For the 1st time since August 11th, the gap between 1st and 2nd will change by a 1/2 game.

Just because Jayson Werth doesn’t want to talk about his family in an inteview….and has said that he’s a private person…..he’s now a jerk???

    I don’t get it.

Yeah, Houston has some good players. And Brad Mills has done a good job.

Give credit, too, to Myers and Happ. They pitched well against their old team.

    BUT….

    They win today.

Chuck: I agree about the SI interview. But that attitude is part of the ‘WE HATE WERTH’ convention that’s been going on since the beginning of June. If the clubhouse janitor gets a zit then its Werth’s fault.

Don’t involve the family & why should he have to talk about anything except baseball? He plays baseball & the article is for Sports Illustrated, not People. It’s nonsense that a veteran Time Life writer like Lidz included that info w/i the context of the article. But here’s why: he wanted ppl to know that he didn’t get what he wanted. HE was a petulant jerk.

And ppl still see it as Werth being the bad guy – I have to shake my head. If I were Werth I’d be absolutely positive that I’d done the right thing not letting that writer near anyone I liked, let alone near anyone I loved. He had an agenda and when he didn’t get it, he made sure Werth took it on the chin.

Interviews, video or print, are not a favorite thing for anyone. In print, writers & their editors have the very last word. In video too, the presenter & their producer have the last word (& the final edit). The interviewee suffers on some level in either case.

Precisely why Steve Carlton never talked to the media…because they are agenda driven and they can’t be trusted. Some people have labeled Steve Carlton a jerk and I never got that either. He returns to the park for almost every alumni occasion the Phillies have and he usually comes up to the booth to chat with our 2 nitwit announcers. I don’t blame Werth for not wanting to talk about his personal life. And frankly, we don’t care anyway. We just want him to play solid baseball.

@Biz, we were even as far as games, with a VERY slight lead in the winning percentage, true, HOWEVER, the Phillies lost again, and the Giants didnt play, we are now 1/2 game back. So in other words, we were tied with the Giants, now…Not so much.
