2010 Game Recaps, Posts
The playoff chase has been on for the last few weeks. Now, the Phillies aren’t chasing anyone.
With tonight’s 3-1 victory over the New York Mets, the Phils jumped into a virtual tie with the San Francisco Giants atop the NL Wild Card standings. Obviously, the Wild Card isn’t the division, which the team ultimately wants, but it is a step in the right direction.
On this night, the Mets offense was stymied by the solid arm of Kyle Kendrick, who bounced back nicely after one of his worst outings of the year.
Kendrick wasn’t spectacular, but was solid as he tossed 6 2/3 innings, giving up six hits and one run. That lone run came from the bat of Jose Reyes, as he smacked the foul pole in right field in the third inning. It was another steady start from the Phillies fifth starter. For KK, it was his fourth outing of six innings or more and two earned runs or less in his last five games.
Mike Pelfrey was pretty good for the Mets, however, Shane Victorino and the bats gave Kendrick just enough for his eighth win of the year. Victorino led off the scoring for the Phils in the third inning with an RBI double, scoring Jimmy Rollins. Just prior to the run-scoring hit, Rollins stole both second and third in succession, finally showing that his calf and foot injuries are behind him. If the wheels are back and Rollins can be a pest on the bases, it’s just another added element that has been missing this season.
There was a bit of a scare in the third inning when Placido Polanco was hit by a pitch on the left hand. All was well two innings later when Polly put one up the middle to score a run, which happened to be the game winner. They added one more in the sixth inning on a Carlos Ruiz RBI single that brought home Jayson Werth.
Following Kendrick, the bullpen locked it down over the final 2 1/3 innings with Chad Durbin, Ryan Madson, and Brad Lidge throwing hitless baseball. Lidge put together a clean ninth inning for his 16th save, tossing just nine pitches to finish off the quick jaunt to Queens.
And, for the time being, the Phils sit in a playoff spot. The Braves sit two up in the NL East.

Instead of Ledge I am going to start calling the closer Lights out.
KK was dealing. I am tired of the bashing of him. Like I was always tired of the Moyer bashing. Lets make sure the big boys are healthy if they are going to play Tuesday. What a great time to be a Phillies fan.

Yea Kyle did an admirable job considering he is our fifth starter. No team is letting up so more than ever the Phils control their destiny. No collapse and we sneak in to playoffs we going to have to earn this one. These guys have been here before and need to pull it together.

I like the small ball tonight. We have our two best players out and these guys found ways to win. AMAZING. Yes, I am positive. Jimmy and Shane stealing bags tonight. We found ways to win without hitting the long ball. The Mets play us tough. We beat them 4 of 6 which is great. We need to take 2 of 3 from the Giants. Chase will be a huge lift getting him back in that number 3 spot. WOW. Just keep winning.

Effective small ball and a solid Kendrick performance. Victorino came up big, as well. Good game.

The Phillies evened the season series with the Mets at 6 wins and 6 losses with 6 more games to go in the series. One wonders if Santana and Dickey would have gotten their 1-0 shutouts against the Phils had Howard and Utley been in the lineup and Victorino was also out against Santana last weekend (Aug. 7th). I would bet that Dicky still would have pitched his shutout with that knuckle ball but maybe Santana might have been beaten as Howard generally does pretty well against him. Phillies hopefully can keep pace with Atlanta when the Giants come to CBP as the Braves will be facing Washington in Atlanta and then go to Chicago.

Bacardi,
I still feel ok with Contreras. He had one major meltdown and 2 smaller ones this whole season. I can live with that. It’s a long season and no one is perfect.
Also, Lidge has been solid for over 2 weeks now. I’m feeling a lot more comfortable when he comes in.

I agree with Andrew. Yes, Kyle dealt high pitch counts early on, but he kept the Mets to one run, not an easy feat when they kept us to one for a little while. He can let all the guys on base he wants as long as none of them cross the plate.
As for Dr. Lidge and Mr. Lidge, we once again saw Dr. Lidge last night and it was good.
I’ll take the wild card. The Braves aren’t folding quite yet and being on top of the wild card might take some of the pressure off our boys. Now let’s see if we can solidify the Wild Card spot and sweep the Giants.
Question: Did we play the Rays at any point in the regular season last year? If not, is this really Burrell’s first return to CBP since the 2008 parade coming up this week? I hope he gets a huge ovation… and then his new team gets its ass kicked.
Utley and Howard NEED to be healthy. We’ve got guys who are filling their spots adequately, it doesn’t help if either or both of them are still a bit tentative at the plate or in the field because they’re not quite all the way back yet. I’ll be driving the welcome wagon when they come back, but they need to be at full strength.
Cole Hamels Parody from my pal Andy: “Hey, guys, I’m really glad you gave Kyle three runs and all that, but TWO was all I needed in my last two starts. Just sayin’.” (in a bit of a higher, slightly nasally voice)

Concerning the bullpen- Through April
Lidge- 0.00 ERA
Madson 0.00 ERA
Contreras 2.25 ERA
Durbin 2.84 ERA
Baez has been sloppy but he’s obviously not going to play a key role. JC is a problem right now but solutions seem few and far between since acquiring an arm means sending Herndon back to Anaheim just weeks before he’s ours. Last night I it was mentioned Kyle Kendrick has a really good average against right handed hitters so there’s your bullpen addition once the rotation goes down to 4.

I’m usually critical of Victorino, but he had a great game last night. Hope he can stick with taking a controlled swing, putting the ball in play, and using his legs. Despite perceptions, the pen has been pretty good lately (even though he loaded the bases Sat night, Madson had good stuff both nights). Fri night, Mets broadcast crew commented on how Charlie should be a candidate for manager of the year.

Plans to attend the game on Tuesday, me and my two sons will be wearing Chase Utley shirts and anticipating see in Oswalt pitch for the first time.
Against the Giants we have Oswalt, Blanton, and Hamels. Time for Blanton to come up big for us. He’s been our worst starter, and if he doesn’t shape up, we might have to sign Moyer for next year……

Anyone else concerned that they might be rushing Ryan Howard back into the lineup? Utley’s injury is not something that can be re-aggravated, but I don’t want Howard back in the lineup until he is sure he is 200%.

bfo – I heard the Mets announcers say that too. Last night listening to Joe Morgan I was in hell, frantically looking on the sched hoping we didn’t have anymore games on ESPN. Unfortunately Wed is another one.
We just need to beat the Giants and catch up the 2 games with the Braves and then STAY THERE. We haven’t been able to make up those 2 games btwn us & the Braves. We’ve been 2 games down for a while.
We left guys on base last night (and that was the Mets). Werth stole a base, got into scoring position and then was left there (in fact he was left on 3rd twice). Sweeney was left on base, Rollins was left on base, and I forget who else. I just don’t think we can get away with that with the Giants.
I think any injury can be re-aggravated. They shouldn’t rush anyone. We’ve been incredibly scrappy & resourceful w/o our full, healthy team, but I doubt we can beat the Giants, Padres, Braves, etc. w/o the full team there.

@Mr. Gallen: It may be “a step in the right direction” for the Phillies in their virtual tie with the Giants for the wildcard spot. However, I would not be overly enthusiastic about the wildcard as your column gives that impression. The Phillies’ are focus only on catching the Braves and win the division. To me, the wildcard are for losers who are attempting to enter the playoffs through the backdoor. In addition, as we know, wildcard teams will be at a disadvantage without the home field edge once the playoffs begins.
