2010 Game Recaps, Posts
The Phillies celebrated their 100th straight sellout at Citizens Bank Park tonight boasting their largest attendance all year (45,449). Too bad the offense couldn’t provide any fireworks to get Cole Hamels (7-10, 3.51) a victory falling to the Giants 5-2 in the final game of this three game series. Now, Hamels might not have even deserved a win giving up a three spot in the first on his way to five innings, seven hits and five runs.
Hamels still hasn’t won a game since July 11. Although, he hasn’t been all that bad in that span. Before tonight his ERA in his last six starts was just 2.14. He has fallen victim to poor run support numerous times this season including two tough 1-0 losses.
Jonathan Sanchez (9-8, 3.47), on the other hand, pitched a great game to block the Phillies from completing the sweep and taking a three game lead in the wild card race. After tonight’s loss Philly is still a game ahead of the Giants for the WC and two and a half games behind the Braves for the NL East.
The lineup is almost back to normal with Chase Utley back from the DL. Charlie Manuel stuck him in the clean up spot tonight with Ryan Howard still out. He responded going 1 for 3 and now has three hits in his three games back.
The Phillies only had four hits tonight and could welcome Howard back by the end of the weekend. Friday he will head to Class A Lakewood to begin his rehab assignment and is scheduled to be at Triple-A Lehigh Valley on Saturday. With Howard back in the lineup, the Phillies will have their opening day roster together for the first time in a very long time.
Despite DL stays from Utley and Howard the Phillies have still won 20 out of their last 26 games and are 17-3 at home since July 8. Without Howard in the lineup, the Phightins have won 12 of 16 games.
This loss snapped the Phillies four game winning streak.

I know mixing up the line up worked the other night, and there is no real clean up guy on the roster right now, but can Charlie please just put the top three in their spots, JRoll, Poly, Chase. I am not a fan of Werth in the clean up spot, I would be fine with vic there, Sweeny, or Gload, Sh*&t but Chooch there for a few days until the Big Piece gets back. It was nice to see people not jumping all over Cole in the game posts. 2 out of 3 from the Giants is fine, It would be nice to sweep the Nats, but I think the KK v Strausburg match up might be a tough sell. But there are times when the Phils hit good pitching. A sweep of the Astros would be nice too, but four games series’s are tough to sweep. Still think Phillies are in good shape, and I think the Braves are about to go 5-5 next 11 days.

Cant win them all. The giants were almost in a must win situation.
I think there is a guy named Halladay pitching friday night. I suspect things will get back on track.

Statistically speaking, winning streaks have to end at some point. I’m not worried.

Would of been great if we won since Braves lost. I knew Cole was due for a so-so game after been brilliant his las 6 or so starts.

Have to step up when you have the opportunity to pick up ground on the Braves when they lose. With the season winding down, you do not know how many opportunities you will get to narrow the gap.

I was in attendance… looking for video of the ball that the fan caught while walking back to his seat while carring a food tray.

Gotta score runs to win. Time to start another winning streak today. Losses really hurt this time of year when we are in the thick of it all.

What do you expect? If Coal Hammel pitched a complete shutout, the team would have won. If he would have hit at least 2 home runs in his 2 at-bats in New York, he would have won that game too. He only has himself to blame. I don’t get why they don’t trade him already.
(okay, turning the sarcasm off now)

Video of the fan catching the ball is on yahoo sports. Very laid back catch. If you said on Tues we’d take two of three against the Giants, I would have been very happy. Not sure why we can’t hit Sanchez, doesn’t have great stuff (can’t hit middling lefties).
Hopefully, we can catch up a game or two this weekend (although the Cubs gave up a few months ago, could easily see a Braves sweep, while the Nats still have pride left). Have a wedding to attend Sat – hopefully they have a TV – would like to see what the Phils can do against Strasburg.

Nevermind… found it. I’m in that shot; I was sitting first row directly above where that catch was made.

Someone posted here saying..”.. Not sure why we can’t hit Sanchez, doesn’t have great stuff..”. I can understand some young people here who are in love with the fastball of power-typed pitcher and making a uninformed remark like that. They repeatedly ignored a baseball axiom regarding pitching; it’s all about LOCATION, LOCATION , LOCATION. Last night, Sanchez was very effective in pounding the strike zone with some nasty breaking pitches that painted the outside corners of the plate. He kept the hitters off balanced all night long. When a crafty pitcher does that, he will shut down the offense no matter how good it is. I, for one, give him credit and tip my hat to him.
Off topic; I wish they get rid of PN “tweets” in the left hand corner and replace it with latest individual posts from thread(s) that we once had there. I couldn’t care less of those inane 5 words or less “tweets” from writers.

“Tyson Gillies, one of three prospects acquired from the Phillies in the Cliff Lee trade last offseason, was arrested in Florida and charged with cocaine possession, according to the Pinellas County Sheriff Department. Bond was posted and he was released.
This story will be updated as more details are confirmed.

By the way, should I give up hope that the mobile site for Phillies Nation will ever work correctly? The worst thing is that I can’t even kick it over to the real site.

Bruce, I appreciate the young remark. While Sanchez has a nice breaking ball, his speeds don’t change a lot. I would have thought by the third time through, they’d be able to hit him. With the exception of Victorino (of all people), the line-up didn’t do a good job of working the count, maybe didn’t see enough pitches to get a line on the ball. It’s not that they haven’t seen Sanchez before – he nearly no hit them (last year or 2008?). I also give him credit (same for Dickey, Washburn, Wakefield).
After the loss last night, I tried to go through all the shutouts of the Phils this year, but couldn’t find one place where I could see wins/losses/starting pitcher,…. My impression is that the Phils have a better chance of beating up the top of the rotation guys, but struggle with the 4th & 5th starters. It could just be a perception, since it is more memorable to be shut out by Wakefield than Beckett.
Either way, keeping pace. If we keep winning each series, the Phils will be playing Oct ball.

It was nice to see most people giving Cole a pass last night for a less then stellar pitching performance. They did hit some good pitches, and Shane’s play in the outfield did not help much. It is tough on the guy when he thinks he has to be perfect to get a win. This time of year all loses are tough ones, especially when the team ahead of you loses also. But if the Phillies can keep winning 3 of 4 and/or 4 of 5 they should be able to over take the Braves. The KK v Staursburg game might be a tough win, but win the series and then take at least 3 of 4 from the Astros and maybe be within a game or tied with the Braves when they see them

The sad thing is that if Hamels, as shag beta etc. says, “thinks he has to be perfect to get a win,” he’s thinking correctly. Even if he’d managed eight shutout innings last night, he would have gotten a no-decision.
I suppose it’s just the breaks, but it’s also pretty darned strange how the offense just shuts down completely when Hamels is on the mound.

Anyone dumb enough to use cocaine is dumb enough to claim it was for medicinal purposes.
My feeling, though, is that he’ll claim it was just something he picked up at the Cherry Hill GNC.

Here’s what drove me nuts… I like when our guys are patient but it was pretty clear by like the 3rd inning last night that Sanchez’ plan was to throw first pitch fastballs for strikes and our guys seemed to be taking all night. Sanchez is the definition of a hot/cold pitcher; he’s got “no-hit” stuff but if you can get a few guys on base and get him out of rhythm, he has a propensity to get wild. We let him dictate the game; our hitters were behind in the count all night and he was able to get us out in front of a lot of sliders (he was consistently throwing his slider at two different speeds- a low 80′s slider that he was trying to get guys to chase and a high 70′s slider that guys were popping up).

WHAT BUGGED ME WAS ALL THE FIRST PITCH FASTBALLS RIGHT DOWN THE MIDDLE OF THE PLATE THAT THEY DID NOT SWING AT………..THEN AFTER BEING BEHIND IN THE COUNT AS OCP SUGGESTED,JUST POPPED UP………….

It looks like pitchers from 2 different dimensions tonight. Halladay vs Marquis – Look at this guy, 5 starts, given up 5 hrs, 10 walks, 30 hits, 30 runs in only 16.1 IP! He has also hit 4 batters – batting average vs Marquis is over .400 and he is pitching at one of the ultimate hitting parks tonight.
Look, I know on occasion the Phils play down to their competition but come on… this has to be a win, it can be sloppy, Halladay can give up a few it really does not matter.. we really don’t care but it has to be a win.

Cody Ross was released today. Now this is a guy that would be a good addition to this team. He plays all outfield positions, is only 29, plays very hard and he can hit. B U T, he played for the Marlins and it is doubtful that the Phils will will get a shot at acquiring him.

I hope we stay within three games of the Braves, continue our lead in the wildcard, until the end of next week. Then we will have all of our guns on deck — Howard, Utley, Rollins, Werth, Victorino, Polanco, Ruiz, Ibanez. AND, hopefully Ibanez will continue to hit.

Moreover, I do like our bench with Sweeney, Gload, Schneider, Valdez, and Brown. Kudos especially to Valdez. He was outstanding playing three positions and hitting better than everyone expected.

If not for Roy H the Phils would be in trouble with all these 1 an 2 run games. The run generated was practically a give away…They either on all 8 or running or sputtering on 1 cylinder…a win is a win…
