Talkin’ Phils-Mets with Mets Gazette

Timely hitting, good pitching, Big Chooch, and a little luck helped the Phillies complete a three-game sweep in South Florida Thursday night. For Mike Baumann’s write-up, go here. (Or just press the down key a few times.)

At 60-48, twelve games over .500 for the first time all season, the Phillies come home to take on the Mets for three at Citizens Bank Park. Remember when 26-15… or 24-13 was the high watermark for the season? Not anymore. It only took 60 games and a few thousand injuries.

Blanton-Niese on Friday, Hamels-Santana on Saturday, Halladay-Dickey on Sunday.

I sat down with Frank Gray of Mets Gazette earlier this week to review and predict the trials and tribulations of both teams.

We talked Halladay, Howard, Ibanez, injuries, strengths, weaknesses, and expectations. We also discussed the Mets deficiencies from the perch of unbiased observer.

For more, pay ‘em a visit.

I think Oswalt pitched ok. His control was off seem to get it some what together in the 5th but not for long. It could be he is still adjusting im hoping so. Bullpen Bullpen Bullpen is the weaknes….JC looked horrible Uncle Cholly has no one he can really count on to be erratic out there with the exception of Durbin…I dont know if RAJ can do anything even if we can go over this self imposed cap…then sort everything out next year…CHOOOOCH!

Oswalt is settling in and showing why we went after him. After he got out of a couple jams, he looked just fine. I can’t wait to watch him more.

Romero was terrible. 12 pitches, 2 strikes. There’s really not much more to say about that.

I think it’s about time we brought up some minor league talent for the bullpen. With regards to Romero, it’s not 2008 any more. The Phillies continue to be needlessly bound by Herndon’s Rule 5 nonsense. And despite Baez’s best Manny Ribera impression, he needs some serious work and hold situations are not the time for that kind of work.

Looking forward, winning this series would be very nice. The Phils should come ready to play.

On the flip side, Madson and Lidge looked good last night. Some of Madson’s pitches were downright NASTY.

One thing to note – if the Phillies sweep the Mets, they will essentially eliminate any outside hope the Mets had of making the playoffs. Right now the Mets are 54-54 sitting 6 back of the Phils and 8 back of the Braves. If they get hot (and they do have some good players), they still have a (small) chance. Sweep them and they’re done.

Listening to Larry A on the broadcast, he summed it up best… as an opposing hitter, the approach against Romero has to be to make him throw strikes because he has shown this year that he’s not capable of doing that with consistency. A reliever that can’t throw strikes is bad…

Need to give Lidge a day or two to rest… I think that regular rest is key for him. Madson, too. That means our bats need to come alive in a big way. A 10-3 drubbing would be really nice tonight.

I agree. It’s really important to make sure Lidge and Madson get regular rest. They are the two most important guys out there for that back end down the stretch.

I hope the Phillies can score some runs against the Mets in this important series. In the last series the Mets swept the Phils 3 games to none at Citi Field, May 25-27. What’s remarkable is Mets pitching dominated philly hitters..allowing ZERO runs. That’s right, Mets had a total of 16 runs to Phils’ ZERO. Hoping for a turnaround for the Phillies in spite of missing their key offensive players (Howard, Utley and Victorino).

Bruce, we all want to nay, need to kick some Muts ass – no extra motivation needed. They stink!

the 1st thing that game to mind after the final out last nite was “there are no flags on the field!” mets/phils? i don’t know. these games are normally very close or very weird. usually both. “one game at a time” motto that has gotten them back in contention is the only thing i wanna continue to see from this team.

Objectively speaking, I can’t see the Mets winning more than one game in this series and I think we’ll be lucky to have even that. The season has disintegrated and the pitching just isn’t good enough. Looking for the Phillies to bury us this weekend.

Phils know what they need to do. Anyone else really appreciate Sweeney being real patient at the plate? He’s a nice little piece to the puzzle.

Anyone know why Bastardo hasn’t pitched since 8/1?

repeat- needless to say the phils can’t take this team for granted. they’re gonna throw 2 lefties at us and we need to think back to the last series as a reminder. chipper jones took a jab at the phils during a post game interview following the braves win over the mets on monday. “i hope their road woes continue” stood out. not sure if anyone of them saw it or took offense. but the phils played inspired baseball vs the fish. the mets are awful on the road, but the phils aren’t that far off on the road overall and we saw what just happened. this reminds me of the birds game vs the raiders last season expect for that game was on the road. no one in there mind thought the eagles would lose to the raiders. the freakin raiders! but they did. blanton has been up/down and the mets were off yesterday. they still have david wright, beltran( yeah i know he’s soft), pagan and rose reyes. and for some strange reason the phils are the only team in mlb that has not exp. a k-rod meltdown. he’s era must be like under 1.00 vs the phils. plus there’s the lidge factor. and they romero…. and the Cholly Factory of bone headed late game decisions.

Excellent series sweep. One thing though that has been bothering me. JC Romero simply has to go. I’ve put up with it until last night, but that was just dreadful. He has made the most of his one good season with us. He was ok a few years ago, but he has been utterly useless for some time now. I think he will be a free agent this winter, and he better not be back.

Bring up Bastardo, soon, and just…RELEASE Romero, AAAAAAAAAAAAH!

That is my only complaint really, they need to bolster the pen and it can be done internally with this move.

Juries out still on Sweeney -
Cheeseburger tonight. This would be a great time to see him give up 2 or less… I know he has it in him.

How long has it been since Cheeseburger Joe has seen the 9th inning from anywhere besides the bench or a bar?

This could get ugly real quick. The Mets are right on the brink of a free fall. A severe whipping would actually be appreciated, maybe Paris Wilpon would can Jerry then.

Remembering that 3-game sweep by the Mets at Citi Field, which all were shutouts, right after Atlanta took 2 out of 3 games from the Phils at CBP; was the start of the Phil’s long tailspin. Phils should not need much more motivation then that, getting shutout three straight by the Mets.
