You want a playoff atmosphere? Well, you got it my friend. Tonight the Bank will be rocking – rally towels and all. The Phillies enter with a three game lead over the Braves in the NL East with 12 games remaining, six against each other.
To add to the drama, the Braves scheduled starter, Jair Jurrjens, has been scratched due to injury. 24-year-old rookie Brandon Beachy will start in his place. This move may favor the Braves as the Phils have not done well against guys they have not seen before. Not to mention Jurrjens’ struggles lately. Beachy has spent most of this season in AA and went 2-0 with a 2.17 ERA in 8 games in AAA before being called up earlier this month. He has an impressive 5.29 K/BB ratio – but of course, he has yet to face major league hitting.
And the Phillies have plenty of that. Riding a seven-game winning streak, the Phils have won 11 of their last 12. They are hot at the right time; even if those wins came against the bottom-feeders of the division. Nonetheless the bats are connecting, especially those of Ryan Howard and Raul Ibanez. Plus, Cole Hamels is tossing some of his best games of his career. He has given up just a single run in his last 31 1/3 innings and over his last 13 games is 5-3 with a stingy 1.79 ERA.
There is no doubt tonight’s game a big one. Where will you be watching?
Today’s lineup: Victorino CF, Polanco 3B, Utley 2B, Howard 1B, Werth RF, Ibanez LF, Ruiz C, Valdez SS, Hamels P
Your gameday beer: Victory Lager
Pure and simple describes this offering from our friends at Victory. The well-balanced German-style lager satisfies the taste buds with roasted malts and flowery hops. It’s a nice substitute for the traditional American Lagers like Yuengling or Sam Adams. Lagers go great with anything, but I particularly prefer a good pepperoni pizza.
GO PHILLIES!

@andrew , I know what your saying about the rotation cause the Phils are gonna be in the playoffs no matter what , the way theyre playing theres virtually no chance they dont make the playoffs. The old man really wants that division title and best record in the NL.

pheeling, LOL! That’s funny, man. Hamels just did what every other pitcher does to the Braves when they have RIPS….. they shoot their own foot time after time. Same old song and dance.

@DESI —— If you plan on the braves playing in october you dont want your bullpen overworked , aren’t they near the top in innings already ?

Werth really needed to move that runner over. Man I hate that. Should Howard have tagged?

Double play? That’s most likely pitching with a man on 3rd one out, but whats up Bravoman. Good 2nd inning.

Mike, Come on man.., we have a rookie pitcher out there, playing in CBP with that sellout crowd waving those towels, I will call it “Baptism with Fire”, I don’t expect too much from Beachy today.

Good point Miked63. I was asking because I just wasn’t sure. Werth needs to do a better job in that situation.

Beachy is getting squeezed like a MF’er. LOL! I laugh because umps are so predictable. Rookies don’t get close calls, but more than a few were like K’s to a blind squirrel. WOW!

miked, he’s fat! So is McCann, Melky, Hinske, Jurrjens. Overweight guys in baseball blow my mind, man. Howard is one great hitter. He’s awesome. But me calling him fat isn’t being mean because it’s true.

1st time through 4 balls hit hard – 2 for outs, 1 run, 1 intent walk. It’ll get better the next time around.

I’m starting to worry about J-roll… wasn’t he supposed to be back like a week ago? In any case, Valdez is swinging a hot bat lately so we better be cautious… but it’s kinda spooky that there haven’t been any updates (or I’ve missed them…).

Desibrave, you get why Bobby is playing the MelkDud over Mclouth? I know why. It’s because the man is obssess with righty/lefty matchups. MelkDud, though, might have cost us the game in the 2nd inning with that DP. Gonzalez has at least won us some games with the bat.
Ok, Philly fans. Carry on…..

Bravo, Thats the Bobby cox’s so called “Loyalty”. I don’t get it. honestly none of them get it., Atleast Bobby’s successor next year is not in the same mold. The LF/CF guys don’t even know if they are playing when they show up at the park.., Thats crap

They’re taking their time with JRoll. Especially with a 3 game lead and hot pitching.

Alright Vic. Be careful with a rookie pitcher, but he is righty. Them lefties can be tricky.

@desi —– you shouldnt say you dont care what happens the rest of year and that this feels like the nlcs cause its not even close. I know your pumped for the game but saying that sounds weak , if the braves dont make the playoffs this year that would be a huge disappointment for brave fans

Desi,
I think the Phils will do OK against Minor. My comment about Lefty rookies was more about their move to 1st base. Lefties can be tricky and Phils have never seen his move to 1st base.

Howards walkup music is a Kanye song called “Power”
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4M19oF5hmHo
As bad as that sucks, its a good song. Kanye says “Jimmy Rollins” at 48 seconds in. Swear.
MAN Werth.
