2010 Gameday, Posts
Florida Marlins (70-67) at Philadelphia Phillies (79-60)
Chris Volstad (9-9, 4.82 ERA) vs. Joe Blanton (6-6, 5.52 ERA)
Time: 7:05 at Citizens Bank Park
TV: Comcast SportsNet
Weather: Sunny, 83
Twitter: @philliesnation
Lineup update: Dom Brown was in the original lineup posted around 3:30 today, but was replaced around 5 p.m. for Jayson Werth who jumps in to bat 7th. No word yet on why the move was made.
5:15 p.m.: Brown was scratched with a sore right quad, he will be re-evaluated after the game. Doesn’t seem like a serious injury.
Get this: the Phillies have won 31 of their last 45 games and now sit 0.5 behind the Braves. With a Braves loss and Phillies win, they will grab the top spot in the division for the first time since May 30. It’s been a long, crazy summer, but somehow, someway, they can grab first place tonight with some help. Amazing.
It all starts with Joe Blanton, who was crushed in Colorado his last time out. He has to put together a strong performance, and if he does, again…first place could be had!
LINEUP: Victorino CF, Polanco 3B, Utley 2B, Howard 1B, Rollins SS, Ibanez LF, Werth RF, Ruiz C, Blanton P
Your Gameday Beer – Leinenkugel Sunset Wheat
I haven’t given up on summer just yet. Everyone is out there drinking their pumpkin beers and enjoying their octoberfest brews, but I’m not ready. I’m sticking with a summery beer, Leinenkugel Sunset Wheat. With the temps still close to 90, it’s important to enjoy a warm-weathered beer. Go with this.
GO PHILLIES!

This game will speak volumes about Joe Blanton and his ability to perform in the clutch. This, like every other game this month, is really important to the Phils. Joe needs to keep the ball down and throw strikes. We can beat the Fish. We would also like to see Ryan Howard show up tonight. I know he is really pressing, and I am rooting for him 120%.

Why did Cholly scratch Brown? Werth is batting 7th because he is 1-17 lifetime vs Volstad.
I have the feeling we’ll be seeing 3 or 4 plate appearances by Werth which will be painful to watch. He’ll have bad body language, look disinterested, and produce nothing. Not feeling this move, Uncle Chuckles.

D Brown allegedly has a sore quad. That’s the reason for the scratch. Regardless. Werth has been bad against Volstad.

Just when nobody expects it, J-roll gets bumped off the leadoff spot… 2 games now.

I don’t think this game has anything to do with Joe Blanton performing in the clutch. He’s won World Series games and hit home runs in the post season also. I’m sure he’s gotta hold of his senses. Cuddyer at 10.5 for a year would be great. That would tie you over until Ibanez’s salary is extricated from the payroll and give you a ton of flexibility going forward. Lets not poo poo the idea so quickly. I bet Ruben has thought about it. F.Y.I. “Superstars” never bat 7th.

Cholly rarely tries anything new. I’m all for it. Jimmy’s tires are flat.
Offensive liability, defensively strong.
What a stretch to think the Pirates beat Hudson but anything can happen. Imagine being one of the 12 Atlanta fans, watching the scoreboard as the Phils got swept by the Astro’s – yeah, anything can happen.

If Ruben HADN’T though about it he’s a stupid GM. And he’s not stupid. Cuddyer’s a good thought. Probably won’t happen….but it’s good to keep options open.
I think Jayson batting 7th has more to do with just plugging a hole in a line-up that he already had made with Brown in it. Plus…maybe it motivates Jayson a little.

Help me to understand guys, what is the attraction to a career .270 hitter with so-so power and a so-so fielding percentage? Michael Cuddyer. Oh yes, no speed.
Werth is faster, hits for a better average, has more power, better speed and a better fielding percentage.

We wouldn’t have made it through July and August without Raul Ibanez. That being said, he needs to start hitting again and start taking walks again. Whatever it takes to get on base.
I’m pleasantly surprised to see Victorino in the lead-off spot again. I love J-Rol, but it’s not currently working with him leading off. Hopefully, he spends a few games in the five- or six-spot, gets hot again, and he gets another shot at lead-off.
I want Ryan Howard to start producing again because I like Ryan Howard and I want to see him succeed in September again.
I don’t think we see first place tonight, but I do think we stay right where we are. Not bad, considering May through July.

Brooks, no he won’t be more expensive. He plays RF, 1B, and 3B and is a smart ballplayer. He will not command Werth’s salary. He is the perfect player to incorporate into our outfield if Werth leaves. He can spell Ibanez, Brown, and Utley (by playing 3rd) and make us more righthanded and making us more versatile. Unlike the more, ahem, “mercurial” Werth, you can plug Cuddyer in and you’re gonna have a guy that will hit, is steady, and has a good head on his shoulders.

Extremely not bad Kate! Are you kidding? With the impact players we had go down, the number of missed games, it is incredible that we are on the verge of taking this division!
Cuddyer is getting over 9 mil – I just dont see it happening. Look, in no way to I advocate keeping Werth after this season. I dont think he will be worth the money asking. Start Brown, he will be OK there, really. forget the overpriced Cuddyer

How is Cuddyer overpriced at 9-10 million when Ibanez is getting…what?….11??

Brooks – I would not expect the Twins to pick up his option at 10.5m. For that reason I think we will be a free agent and get somewhere, if I were to hazard a guess, in the 3y/20m range. He’s perfect for us.

Who wants Cuddyer and why? I think we have everyone and everything we need right now for playoffs. If Ruben was good he’d sign Werth before he get’s to Boras. Then you’ll never see him again until he comes in and bashes Oppo Boppos all over Citizens Bank. Let’s get Burrell back in anything! Glad he found a home in SF. Again. He’s home is Philly

I hope Brown is ok, I really like him and he needs to see time.
Like BenFran. Where the hell Cholly, put him in he’s got talent now. Brown will the more time he sees. He’s the future

I dont get attached corner outfielders or infielders.
Someone is going to overpay Werth so he like Rowand will have to go.

This is an important game. Blanton is pitching and he has been mediocre at best. Yes, this is a clutch game for him and he did get out of the first inning without giving up any runs. Good start because the first inning has been a difficult one for Joe.

I agree that Cuddyer would be a very good addition. Is he available. My understanding is that he is a free agent in 2012. Is there a real possibility here or is it a mere wish at this point?

That’s true, he’ll be overpaid just like Rowand.
