You often hear “the best defense is a good offense” and the best thing the Phillies could do to retain their first place status is to keep on winning – put the Braves in the rearview and just keep rolling.
As always with Cole Hamels, the offense needs to produce. Today a .500 record is on the line for King Cole, a stat he surely deserves to go alongside his 3.18 ERA. That ERA breaks down further to 2.16 and 2.79 clips in July and August respectively. As you may recall, Cole didn’t allow a run in his last start on Sept 3rd which bumped his consecutive scoreless innings streak to 18. The lefty has had success against Marlins hitters individually, but he sports a just 2-7 record versus them in his career.
Andrew Miller will take to the hill for the Marlins and is coming off his first win in over a year. After starting the season in AAA, he found his way into the rotation after Ricky Nolasco went down with an injury three weeks ago. Chase Utley (.308 in 13 ABs) and Shane Victorino (.529 in 17 ABs), particularly, have had success against the 25-year-old lefty.
Technically the Phillies have a chance to sweep the Fish with a win tonight since this series started with Game 2 on Monday.
LINEUP: Victorino CF, Polanco 3B, Utley 2B, Howard 1B, Rollins SS, Ibanez LF, Werth RF, Ruiz C, Hamels P
Your Gameday Beer – Fire Island’s Red Wagon IPA
Tonight’s selection comes to us from Fire Island, NY, that crazy place off Long Island where cars are prohibited. And it is this quirky phenomenon that give us the name of the beer since red wagons are what locals use to transport goods around the island. Ah, simple times call for a simple beer. This golden beer is balanced with floral and fruity hops and is perfect for a September evening. Have it with some grilled pork chops.
GO PHILLIES!

Cards best chance is in the division. Cinci lost 3 in a row, might get swept by Rockies. That could give them incentive.

I’m anxiously awaiting the announcement of Nate Robertson’s outright release. I never need to see him pitch again. Other than that, it was a great game. Our lineup looked real good. Howard’s a beast.

Ashburn for Cole or Ryno? Hard to call it. 7 inning SO baseball is great, but 6 RBIs is amazing.

Howard it is! St Louis needs to at least split with the Braves. I dont’ think that will be impossible. Waino and Carp should get W’s.

because you expanded the roster and are up 10-0 in 8th
You put in a skell he can give up 3 or 4 and its ok
but 6 isnt. The putting him is wasnt so bad it was how long he was left in.
Nate Robertson was once a pretty decent major league pitcher believe it or not

I’m fully expecting sharing the highway with the Squaws by the end of tomorrow night and then the drag race really starts.
I may check out some of tomorrow night’s rerun of the Halladay perfect game. I was working that night and listening on the radio. The bar was monitoring the Flyers game and the kitchen was monitoring the Phillies/Marlins game. Great night, that.

Got you Andrew….Getting Figgy with it Nah Nah Nah Ah getting Figgy with it….Anyways I dont much about Nate so I have to take you word…but this guy needs some serious work….Madson is going to be our horse for any tough situations…last year we mixed in Eyre and Happ….I would say give my boy Kyle the start against the Mets…as he did pretty good against them last year and have Worley on stand by…

Honestly, Robertson was ugly last night. But one outing does not a fair assessment make. Hopefully, the bats keep producing and he’ll have another chance with some padded leads and see if this is a fluke.
