Philadelphia Phillies (94-64) at Washington Nationals (68-90)

Nationals Park is where it all began this season, where the division was won, and, tonight, the Phillies will say goodbye to Washington until next spring. That is, if the rain holds off.
With home-field advantage throughout the playoffs sewn up, the Phillies can afford to take their ease a little bit, as Charlie Manuel proved last night. Last night, Adam Dunn’s walk-off homer helped the Nats to a 2-1 victory over the Phillies’ reserve squad. Tonight is no different, as the Phillies make seven changes from their Opening Day lineup. John Mayberry gets his first start of the year, and Hero of the People Wilson Valdez returns to the lineup in relief of Chase Utley.
That patchwork squad will face lefthander Ross Detwiler, a 24-year-old making his 19th career major league start. Detwiler was picked 6th overall in 2007. In recent years, the Nats have done well drafting pitchers in the high rounds, netting Stephen Strasburg, Drew Storen, Chad Cordero, and Jordan Zimmermann in recent years. Detwiler has not been so fortunate, struggling with his control this year. At his best, he’s a finesse lefty in the Cole Hamels mold, mixing in a decent fastball with a change-up for an out pitch, but so far, despite a nearly-even K/BB ratio, Detwiler’s gotten away with it, posting a 2.52 ERA in 25 innings. Pay attention to this guy, because when the Nationals finally put it together in a couple years, Detwiler could be one of their good young arms, along with Zimmermann and Strasburg.
There’s not a whole lot else to say about tonight’s game. Hardly anything is on the line, so sit back, relax, and be glad you’re not out there in that rain.
Today’s lineup: Rollins SS, Valdez 2B, Victorino CF, Sweeney 1B, Francisco LF, Mayberry RF, Dobbs 3B, Hoover C, Blanton P
Your Gameday Beer – Leinenkugel’s Oktoberfest
Today is the 60th birthday of Milwaukee Brewers owner Ken Macha, and in his honor, we’ll give you a seasonal beer from the best of the Milwaukee brewers, Jacob Leinenkugel. Leinenkugel’s Oktoberfest is not as highly-touted as, say Sam Adams, but it’s a malty beer that makes you think of football, terrible weather, and pumpkin pie. Enjoy. -Michael Baumann

FOXSPORTS HAS THIS AS YOUR NUMBER 1 WORLD SERIES MATCHUP-1. Phillies-Yankees
The hook: Goliath vs. Goliath
Lots of spicy notes to this one … A rematch of last year’s World Series, East-Coast intensity/obnoxiousness, top payroll against fourth-highest payroll, and the two teams generally regarded as the best in their leagues. If you believe the World Series should truly be a clash of titans, then this should be your preferred match-up. And how does a possible Halladay-Sabathia faceoff in Game 7 sound?

I just dont think the Spankees make it.
That the braveless are gonna back in means we draw the Reds in series one? rather them then facing lincecum 2 times in a 5 game series.

The Washington Nationals may be saying goodbye to Adam Dunn shortly. They need this guy, who is one of the most prolific power hitters in all of baseball over the past eight years. He killed us last night with both RBIs. I hope Sweeney gets some hits and it really is good to see the reserves get some playing time.

I feel very sad for Bravoman — a lonely voice rooting for a solid team in a big city that simply does not care one iota about its team. Sad.

Dunn is very good. No idea why they grooved one to him last night. But I guess we didnt want extra innings anyway.

If Baumann’s projected line-up is accurate, it’s the ultimate B squad that’s playing tonight. ;-) No Polanco, Utley, Howard, Ibanez, Ruiz or Werth. Although if there is a RISP, I won’t miss Werth (chuckles).

Polanco got a cortisone injection into his left elbow. Could play as early as Friday.

Y’all are obsessed with the Braves’ attendance. Who cares? They had a packed house last night and today’s game is quirky 4:30 game in the middle of the week. I know, I know ….your stadium would be sold out, no matter the time or day of the week, but this is Atlanta. I personally don’t care, as long as they get in the playoffs. Fans will be showing up this weekend. It’ll be packed.
Back in ’91 when that run started, you couldn’t go anywhere in the south without somebody having a Braves hat or shirt on. It was crazy. That lasted for a while and now they’re trying to get all that back.

Andrew, go ahead and admit your projection about the Braves missing the playoffs were wrong, or at least they look to be. You probably won’t, but you should since you went on and on about how we were/are a joke and all.
The Braves are coming. They might not go far in the playoffs this time, but they’re coming full force starting next year. Everything looks good except the offense, but that can be fixed with a signing/trade for a OF or two. The all around pitching is solid for a long while.

Andrew, it’s sad that a Philly fan spends so much time dissing another team and he won’t admit he was dead wrong about them. Admit it dude. You were wrong about those “sorry Braves who won’t sniff the playoffs”.
I think John Kruk fits right in with his Philadelphians ….fat, pale white and lazy looking.

Oswalt or hamels its kinda moot. Unless one is clearly beter at home or on road etc etc.
Does anyone know if the brvesless make it who wed play Sf or Cinn?
Braves making it isnt good for us. They will get swept out and the tea we face in the NLCS will be all rested up.
And I dont wanna play timmy and pat in round 1. round 1 should be 7 games.

Don’t turn mean and nasty, Bravoman. We don’t hate you. YOu are a nice fella who cares about his team….perhaps too much …..that is why you are invading other winning teams sites. Living vicariously. Do the Braves have a blog you could join?

Good Afternoon Denizens, Looks like everyone is worried about Braves attendance here., BTW tickets are still available for the Phillies series.
Any team that won divisions 3 times before this year will obviously sellout night after night.., thats no wonder.
Here are some facts about your own PHILLIES ATTENDANCE
Year Attendance Rank
2001 22,846 24th
2002 20,482 24th
2003 28,973 15th
2005 33,316 13th
2006 34,200 11th
2010 40K 2nd
What you learn from this is Crowds come in to watch when you keep winning. Braves didn’t make playoffs 2006-2009 and this year it is stilll hanging by thread..
Wait for a few years for Oswalt, Halladay, Howard to leave when they get old (they are already past their peaks) and you will see the CBP empty again…

The Phillies are the Yankees of the national league.
They reload with Cliff Lee, Oswalt and Halladay not laughers like Derek Lee.
There will not be a down time. Sure wont make it to the series every year but they wont be second tier ever again. they got the finances (thanks to the attendence) not have to.

Braves lost Martin Prado for rest of the season, thats a major blow, at this point even if they make it to postseason huffing and puffing, they will have real tough time in playoffs, Even the bullpen is shaky lately, Saito and O’Flarety are no where close to return, Venters who is another rookie of the year candidate is struggling lately, bobby used him for 82games already.. its a shame.
Heard , charlie is not going to let Oswalt and Halladay pitch in the braves series, and that Hamels will go for 2 or 3 innings at the max.. that will be a biiiiiiig relief for the braves,

One big advantage that Braves have over Phillies or for that matter anybody else is their BENCH…, Brooks Conrad is our daily 3B after we lost Prado and guess what he does, Hits a 3run homer today which is the margin braves are winning today, and David Ross our back up catcher in place of McCann today gets 3 Doubles.., Thats why braves are still here in the race..

How is this guy even talking? We won the division. We swept you guys. And Chollie will probably put our A team out this weekend just to sweep you again.
God forbid the Phils meet the Braves in the playoffs at any point. Then you guys’ll just be talking about how much you’re gonna beat us NEXT year.

Talk about benches we just hit back to back hr’s. As far as predicting CBP to drop in attendence , it will never happen. Andrew already mentioned the Phillies will continue to reload even after the current group is gone. Phillies A ball teams are the best in baseball winning back to back titles the last two years , those guys will be here in 3 or 4 years , perfect timing. The attendence desibrave listed still shows 30 to 35 k a game even at veterans stadium. The flyers have sold out for 30 years same with eagles , sixers do go up and down depending on how the team is doing. Of all the cities with the 4 major sports Atlanta by FFAARRRRRR is the worst as far as fan support goes look it up stats dont lie. To try and compare Atlanta’s passion for theyre sports teams to Phila’s passion is an excersise in futility.

So andrew; how was the game you went to ?
Philly-boy told me you were there. Give us a little scouting report , how was the food ? Did you spend a small fortune , its very expensive if you go to a game a drink more than a couple beers.

Francisco’s making a pretty good case for himself for the postseason roster.
I still want to see Sweeney in the postseason, though.
Is there ANYONE aside from Valdez and Dobbs who can cover second, shortstop, and third? Because Francisco and Sweeney both deserve the postseason more than Dobbs does this year.
