Nationals Park is where it all began this season, where the division was won, and, tonight, the Phillies will say goodbye to Washington until next spring. That is, if the rain holds off.

With home-field advantage throughout the playoffs sewn up, the Phillies can afford to take their ease a little bit, as Charlie Manuel proved last night. Last night, Adam Dunn’s walk-off homer helped the Nats to a 2-1 victory over the Phillies’ reserve squad. Tonight is no different, as the Phillies make seven changes from their Opening Day lineup. John Mayberry gets his first start of the year, and Hero of the People Wilson Valdez returns to the lineup in relief of Chase Utley.

That patchwork squad will face lefthander Ross Detwiler, a 24-year-old making his 19th career major league start. Detwiler was picked 6th overall in 2007. In recent years, the Nats have done well drafting pitchers in the high rounds, netting Stephen Strasburg, Drew Storen, Chad Cordero, and Jordan Zimmermann in recent years. Detwiler has not been so fortunate, struggling with his control this year. At his best, he’s a finesse lefty in the Cole Hamels mold, mixing in a decent fastball with a change-up for an out pitch, but so far, despite a nearly-even K/BB ratio, Detwiler’s gotten away with it, posting a 2.52 ERA in 25 innings. Pay attention to this guy, because when the Nationals finally put it together in a couple years, Detwiler could be one of their good young arms, along with Zimmermann and Strasburg.

There’s not a whole lot else to say about tonight’s game. Hardly anything is on the line, so sit back, relax, and be glad you’re not out there in that rain.

Today’s lineup: Rollins SS, Valdez 2B, Victorino CF, Sweeney 1B, Francisco LF, Mayberry RF, Dobbs 3B, Hoover C, Blanton P

Nugget NectarYour Gameday Beer – Leinenkugel’s Oktoberfest

Today is the 60th birthday of Milwaukee Brewers owner Ken Macha, and in his honor, we’ll give you a seasonal beer from the best of the Milwaukee brewers, Jacob Leinenkugel. Leinenkugel’s Oktoberfest is not as highly-touted as, say Sam Adams, but it’s a malty beer that makes you think of football, terrible weather, and pumpkin pie. Enjoy. -Michael Baumann

Rollins needs to be at full speed or I think id rather have valdez.
Not drunk and just think you win with whomever allows you to win.
Jimmy needs to hit this last week.

Back at ya Philly-boy ! ——- What are we gonna do for a week ?
I cant wait , Big Joe has looked good 5 outings in a row now , he can be a solid #4 in the 7 game series. Its gonna be interesting to see who stays and who goes on the playoff roster. Last year charlie used 12 pitchers of the 25 men. Thats 13 position players , the 8 starters leaves 5 more spots.—- schnieder , valdez , ben fran , gload and who ?
This has jimmy starting but if he cant jimmys still there to come in and hit off the bench . Thats why i asked andrew if he was drunk , dont tell me you wouldnt want jimmy coming off the bench in a big spot to hit from either side (advantage). We have seen him come thru so many times when the lites are brightest. ———– dobbs , d-brown or sweeney get the last spot

  • NOTHING TO DO WITH THE GAME BUT-Brandon Webb has more work to do: In his instructional league outing today, his fastball was clocked at 80-82 mph.

  • I AM GOING TO MISS YOU GUYS DURING THE PLAYOFFS,BUT I WILL CHECK IN TIME TO TIME!!!!!!

  • MADSON??????????????????

I hope charlie doesnt give the last spot to his boy dobbs , its interesting though. Look at the speed the kid can give you on the bases. We might need Sweeneys right hand bat though. Charlie already has Gload to play 1st and he hits better. Valdez can play 2nd,3rd or short. I would keep Sweeney for the right hand stick, with gloads left handed bat dobbs services are not required dont need 2 backup 1st baseman. So is it sweeney for a 2nd right hand bat or the kid ?

  • MIKE-I HOPE THEY GIVE THE SPOT TO SWEENEY AND BEN,NOOOO DOBBS!!!!

  • YEA RYAN NEEDS THE WORK—-LOL

  • I LIKE SEEING HIM HITTING 96 MPH!!

  • BAD THROW BY DOBBS…….

  • Assuming the Phillies maintain this lead, Joe Blanton will be 8-1 with a 3.81 ERA in his last 20 starts.

Hey PN – it would be so great if we would be the reason that the Braves miss Post Season this year. We could go into Atlanta and leave with a 98-64 record. Atlanta would then be 90-72 and the Pads need to go at least 3-2 to wind up tied. The Pads wind up the season playing the Giants in SF which could be tough. The Pads have to stop losing! They have lost 3 in a row, twice to the Cubs while playing at home.

The Pads have shown resiliency and the Braves a nose dive, so, I am not giving up on the Pads coming away with a better than 3-2, hopefully win 4 out of 5. It just would be nice to see someone else, Atlanta is boring.

  • IT WILL BE TOUGH BROOKS,CHARLIE WILL NOT PLAY THE STARTERS…….

    Dominating outing for Big Joe.

The Padres started downhill after that series against the Phillies in late August/early September.

    Man, what a great game.

I just noticed Jay – Lidge’s ERA is down to 3.05, by the end of the season his ERA could be under 3, which in itself is a benchmark for a very decent season.

    Nice win
Dont want the braves in for a lot of reasons. they wont win round 1 and will be easily beaten by SF or cinn. But they will make it the pads and Rockies just couldnt pull it off

The Phils can not nor will not lose a series. And your right Andrew, I think we do better against SF in the longer series.

  • HELLLLL YEAAAAAAA LEFTY!!!!!

  • I AGREE BROOKS,JUST HATE A 5-GAME SERIES………

  • I THINK THEY ALL SHOULD BE 7-GAMES……..

No way the braves don’t make it now. I think if SD makes a strong enough challenge to them, they’ll end up winning the division because the last three are against the Giants. One way or the other we’re going to get the Giants at some point.

Andrew was that you heckling Phil Wood and Johnny while they tried to do their PGL Monday night? I was hoping you wouldn’t do that to Phil.
