2010 Game Recaps, Posts

Things looked dire there for a little bit, but the Phillies prevailed tonight to hand Roy Halladay his 17th win of the season. Roy allowed four home runs for the first time in his career, yet fortunately for him (and most power pitchers) there were no runners on base and those 4 runs were all the Brewers could manage.

The Phillies were led by back-to-back homers by Ryan Howard and Jayson Werth to start their scoring. Hopefully Howard’s solo shot in the second only further fuels his September fire. The big story however was the Phils game-winning two-run sacrifice fly in the seventh. Down 4-3 with the bases loaded, Placido Polanco flied out to left. Carlos Ruiz chugged home beating the throw from Ryan Braun which sailed behind him up the third-base line. Seizing the opportunity, Wilson Valdez scampered home as well to give the Phillies the 5-4 lead.

J.C. Romero and Ryan Madson tag-teamed the eighth inning to set the stage for Brad Lidge. Without much drama, Brad locked it down for his 20th save on the season.

Meanwhile the Braves managed to beat Josh Johnson and the Marlins and remain a game ahead of the Phillies. The Phils recalled Scott Matheison earlier in the day. Vance Worley and Nate Robertson also made the trip south from Lehigh Valley and will find out Sunday along with the rest of us who will start the second game of Monday’s doubleheader.

This was a great game. The Phils have seen to been responding to adversity even when their ace was getting a lil roughed up. I heard about Nate Robinson a few hours ago. Wasnt this guy garbage?

Halladay now leading NL in wins and Ks. big lead in innings pitched and ERA is 2.36. Id say season ends today he wins cy young. Get him to 20 wins and he probably gets it. Jimenez and Wainwright are struggling some.

Phils continue to impress. Getting very close to that best record in the NL and home field throughout the playoffs.

When was the last time Halladay won the Cy Young? Sad about Cliff Lee having trouble with his era and back problems… I know we could possibly face him in the playoffs, but I wish the guy best of luck. Really happy the yankees fucked up the trade for him.

Going today, Phils have lost the last 3 games I’ve been to but their home record is that good I’m still up (16 wins 10 losses).

Time for KK to toss a good one, he is due.

Heading down on Monday night as well, thank goodness after the music stopped it looks like Roy2 will be starting – yes!

When was the last time anyone can remember when the Phils had 2 starters that were near the lead in the NL for strike outs? Roy leads with 196 and Hamels is 6th best with 183. Both are destined for over 200 this year and, Oswalt has another 5 starts – he may reach 200 (currently at 161, OK perhaps an outside shot).

Wow – what a team, what a crazy year. This is the time to be on fire though.

It is Nate RobERTson, not RobINson. He’s a bit of a Kyle Kendrick type; throws some good games and some terrible ones.

I’m curious to see just who pitches in the other game of that doubleheader. Robertson obviously has more experience, but hitters may be less familiar with Worley.

In either case, I hope the team’s bats show up, because they’ll most likely need a lot of them.

Nate Robinson plays in the NBA and won the slam dunk contest one year. Nate Robertson is a stinky LH pitcher with lots of ML experience. If the Phils don’t use him its would be because the Marlins hit LHers a lot better than righties, according to “my sources”.

I think KK is spent for the season. He wasn’t ready for full-time rotation this year.

KK is what he is a #5 starter. He needs the offense to support him. He’s either really sharp or terrible. I have no issue with KK, he’s done the job you expect of your #5 starter.

He’ll have competition for his spot come Spring Training.

I dont get why so many misunderstand what the #5 starter is.

If KK is our biggest issue then we are in damn good shape.

Why Scott? I don’t see it. He was a mediocre pitcher at the start of the season, and still is. He pitched in more games/similar innings in 2008. Thus far, he’s never returned to the type of performance he showed in 07. But on the bright side he’s only one of two starters on our staff with a winning record! ( I know, I know, Cole should have 15-16 wins by now it’s true)

Makes me wonder if there is anything to the theory that teams hit better when they don’t have their ace on the mound, because they know they have to. And vice-versa in Cole and Doc’s cases.

**Correction**- Meant to say- “he’s one of only two starters” not “he’s only one of two starters” –kind of loses it’s meaning the wrong way

The only person in our rotation that hasnt pitched to expectations is Big Joe, but he’s shown signs over the last month of coming out of it (Rox game aside).

When he’s on he is a soild #3 but we only need to be our #4.

That’s nice rotation depth and we can claim one of the best 3 headed monsters in the game.

I agree Bob- KK’s done just what we’ve needed him to, Joe hasn’t.

But it could have easily went the other way. KK could be two games under .500 (net loss of 4 games) and Joe could have been as much as 4 games over had he met expectations.

Net, net- we still would have the same record

I certainly don’t expect much when Meatball Joe is on the mound. The glimpse we had of his return to the dining table was fleeting at best. He’s back on the couch and changing channels with a bag of Fritos.

Here’s hoping for a sharp KK today. Last few outings he has not shown much as a matter of fact, in the 6 starts he had in August, he gave up 22 runs in 32.2 innings for a 5.79 ERA. His last 3 outings he gave up 13 runs in 16.2 innings a 7.22 ERA. Lets hope for a better September and continued run support.

Aside from anyone hitting homers (which is always a given), we had a lot of heroes last night.

Ruiz plowed into home plate and then got the hell out of the way for Wilson Valdez. That was an inspiring two runs there.

Doc’s not-so-great nights are anyone else’s good nights.

I think Romero’s got his stuff back.

No drama from Madson or Lidge, which is always a good sign.

I’m feeling good about the bats today and KK is due for a smooth outing.

    Brooks,
Look at KK’s April splits. I don’t disagree that he’s not pitching as well now as mid season. I was only saying that he’s the same pitcher he was in April, he was actually a bit worse then. But he is what he is, we can only hope for a decent outing and some timely hitting on our part.

Also, be careful, after dollar dog night you may wind up on the same couch as Joe!!! Enjoy the game, beautiful day wish I could be there.
