Phillies save bats for nightcap, beat Marlins 7-4

2010 Game Recaps, Posts

For the first game of the day/night double header Charlie Manuel had given Jimmy Rollins the day off. He had been in a slump collecting only four hits in his last 30 at bats. For the nightcap, Rollins was reinserted into the lineup but not in his usual lead-off spot. That role was given to Shane Victorino.

Victorino did not let this chance go to waste. He went 3-5 as the top of the Phillies lineup exploded for seven hits and five RBIs between Victorino, Placido Polanco and Chase Utley. Rollins did have a hit batting in the fifth spot ahead of Raul Ibanez; who had two hits himself.

The five runs the Phillies put up in the second inning provided some breathing room for Roy Oswalt (11-13, 3.09) to do work. Oswalt pitched seven innings and allowed six hits and four runs. He struck out seven but did give up three home runs. Phillies’ starting pitchers have now given up nine home runs in the past four games. Brad Lidge pitched a scoreless ninth to get his 21st save. He is now 11 for his last 12 in save chances.

The Phillies offense managed to win this game and score seven runs without the use of the long ball. Something they have depended on in year’s past. The Phils are getting help from their pitching staff boasting a team ERA of 3.76 which is good for sixth best in the National League.

With the win tonight, the Phillies are now only a 1/2 game back of the Braves in the NL East and still 1 1/2 games ahead of San Francisco for the Wild Card.

Worth noting: Domonic Brown did get the start tonight in right field. While he didn’t collect any hits he did manage to stretch the pitchers collecting two walks in four at bats.

    .5 out for the division
1.0 out for the best record in the NL and home field throughout the playoffs.
    I am feeling it.
Come on Bobs big boy lets deal tomorrow. Like you get a french fry for every strike and burger for every out.
And a trip to the golden coral with a win.

It’s all on Fat Joe tomorrow. We should be able to tag Volstad. Of course, we should have hit Mendez this afternoon, too. Regardless, a quality start from Joe would go a long way towards a win.

Nice game..lately our starters have been giving up Home Runs but we still pulled together to get the win….Lidge well he has been getting the job has done….Rollins continues to struggle i think this was a smart move by Manuel…Vict or Werth in the lead off seems to make more sense…I wonder what we can get for Rollins? Lol….yea i went there…love Jimmy but one has to wonder at this point….

Cant lose Jimmys glove. Or what he means to this team.
When hes not in there ( see game 1 today) they show no movement on the EKG. Flatliners anyone? 1 hit anyone?
    I dont know why.
Not batting him 1 every day no matter what should definately be in the discussion though.
You cant break up the core here till they falter big time.
Like if they didnt make playoffs this year. coming off 2 Pennants and WS title and being 1 game out of best record in NL. These are our guys. Enjoy them.

OK – nice game, very nice game. Poly was on target, so was Vic and Utley. Roy did not look bad at all, the mistakes he had were hit a long way. He did have a certain nastiness on his fastball and slider which sometimes hung over the plate – he was hit for 3 hrs today.

    As the resident seamhead.
The Padres just beat the Dodgers. at 1 08 AM

Somehow I still see the Friars in the playoffs. With SF or Colorado.
The Braves? No shot. Unless they take the phillies spot. Which is highly unlikely.

Continuing the Werth/Boras thread – No. Werth is not a superstar. Werth does: Get on base, hit doubles, has some power, hustles, is a good fielder, has speed. Werth does not: Drive in runs, hit consistently, run the bases particularly well, steal bases, play smart baseball on a consistent basis.

If you’re gonna be a superstar you have to do more of the things that he doesn’t do. One fella in the last post compared Ibanez salary to what Werth might get. If you remember, Raul got his before the bottom of the economy fell out. Salaries are generally down.

I think Werth is a very good player who needs other good players around him. He has weaknesses that are obvious. They’re are very few superstars these days and Werth certainly doesn’t qualify. Someone will pay him a lot of money and it won’t be us. I say Boras comes out with an an initial demand of 6y/100m.

No easing up on your boy Kendrick – I’m sure he would appreciate the fact that someone is standing up for him!

With the performance that Worley gave us yesterday, would you even consider subbing Kendrick with Worley? It’s crunch time, we are not sure what we’re getting from Worley, with KK, it looks to be a certain Eatonesque performance – in the whole by 3 by the end of the first and hold on for at least another 2 perhaps 3 spotted to the opposition before the Phils wake up. No, 3 outrageous performances in a row, when we need courageous efforts will not do.

We got to see our right fielder for hopefully at least the next 4 to 6 years last night. Brown in, Werth gone. Looking forward to it too. What are the stats if I heard them correctly? Jayson is something like 1 for 42 with RISP since June? Give me a break!

First, and most importantly, only 1/2 game back while taking only 3 of 5. I felt the Phils would take over first, but figured we wouldn’t be within striking distance until we played the Braves. I wouldn’t count the Braves out yet, but don’t think they have enough to finish much better than 0.500 for the month. KK looks bad, but the other 4 starters look very solid (except every mistake from the Roys seems to wind up being a home run).

I don’t look at the computer on weekends or days off. Read some of the Werth string this morning. First, I’m not going to diss Werth. He’s a solid player, one of the few 5 tool rh outfielders, and we wouldn’t have near the success of the last three years without him. Sometimes he spaces out, but we are a better team with him, and I enjoy watching him play. He is a lot better all around player than Bay, and stays healthy – deserves that kind of money. With that said, I don’t think the Phils should pay what he can get. Let him go to the Red Sox, Angels,…..

Next year, platoon Ben Fran (can alternate between Ib and Brown, depending on who is hitting well at the time), give Mayberry a last shot, or see who else is out there cheap. I wouldn’t dump Werth to pick up a $10M player, even if only for a year.

I agree we should do what ever we can to try to re-sign Jayson…but if Boras comes out with initial 6y/100M demand the Phils should ….and WILL…walk away.

As for the “superstar” label…. Jayson is a very good player like Dipsy says….but he is not a superstar.

Problem is…he will most likely be paid like one because the market for available outfielders is very small…as in Werth and Carl Crawford. So someone…Boston….will overpay.

Werth would excel in Boston….generally good players, a history of contention and recent WS success, a passionate and knowledgeable fanbase like Philly. Werth would become an instant cult hero there and he would thrive in that environment.

Seriously though…I like the Michael Cuddyer idea.

Dipsy: Maybe Ibanez was signed before the economy tanked, so he got more. But look at some of the signings since: Bay for zillions, Wolf for 3 years at nearly $30 million, Marquis and Figgins for too much. I don’t think the economy has that much to do with the salaries of MLB players. It may affect the marginal types, but not those with real talent, and despite the low RISP (which has only been this season) and a diminished stolen base total, Werth does have talent. He hits, hits with power, fields well, throws well, and can run. How many other outfielders can do all that? How many outfielders that can do all that have been signed for what YOU’D pay?

Right. And all that will be taken into consideration….combined with the thin selection of outfielders that will be FAs….and Jayson will be overpaid by someone.

Let’s face it. The Phillies have a history of not offering players massive, long contracts. I think it’s only recently that managemnet has started to realize what it truly has with this franchise. But, historically, they’re cheap.

The one exception is Ryan Howard. One could argue that he was overpaid…and maybe he was. But the reality is that Howard puts a$$es in the seats. Jayson Werth really doesn’t.

And I’m glad that they practice some level of fiscal restraint. It goes back to the argument of keeping payroll at a competitive but reasonable level ….so that the average fan can still affford to go to a few games each year.

I’m glad that we’re not the New York Yankees andgoing out and buying whatever we want.

Here’s hoping that Brown will help us to forget Jayson rather quickly.

of atlanta, san fran, san diego, phils, 3 will make the playoffs!!! – and they r all bunched together now with about 20% of the season left to go!! – pretty exciting but we sure cant take anything for granted and have to go out there and play tough every night!! – occassionally i wish they had given contrares a chance to start – but i guess they’re so short in the bull pen and trying to stablize it with contrares, romero, madson, lidge, which seems finally to be coming together, that they just cant afford to! – well then maybe worley can replace kendrick!! – heres to joey boy having a good outing tonite! – i think hes going to!!

After the second game all I can wonder is where was the effort during the first?

Right now the strength of this team is it’s weakness, the offense is not consistently there, the winning or production would be byproducts but it just leaves you scratching your head when good hitters surrender outs to mediocre pitchers without making them throw great pitches and hit their spots to the inch…

The starting pitching is nothing short of great, the back of the bullpen has returned to being as good as you can expect it to be and the young arms are protecting the back-end by pitching well enough to give those guys rest.

I don’t worry about Kendrick or Baez or Blanton being great, I’m really worrying about the bungee-jump line-up because the bats aren’t showing consistent effort at the plate to stabilize the line-up.

The Phils sure need to come up big in these last 2 home games vs the Fish. Cheeseburger/Meatball Joe has to tune in tonight. Cole does not have a good career record vs the Fish but he has been outstanding this year.

The Braves should win tonight with Hudson on the mound and tomorrow they put Lowe, who has an outstanding record vs the Bucs (he is 9-0 with a 2.76 ERA!) up against the mediocre Zach Duke.

Much needed day off on Thursday.

It’s unlike anything I’ve ever seen NJ – how is it that the entire offense is stymied especially against no-name rookie pitchers or proven mediocre entities like Randy Wolf?

Some of the Phils actually double clutched when Wolf was throwing that junk. Rollins and Howard both started swinging, pulled back then swung again making contact but dribbling balls to the second baseman or a weak pop up. Frustrating, extremely frustrating. Some team, some one is hitting the crap out of these guys and its not us.

I can take it against the Randy Wolf’s or the guys who have/or are in the process of cutting their teeth in the in the majors by pitching intelligently… I just don’t get how other teams can come out and put our young pitchers under pressure and our guys just seem to only produce bi-polar offense. You want to see evidence at the plate your hitters aren’t just looking and swinging but are seeing the pitches and making adjustments accordingly.

This is a great team you just wonder what would happen if you didn’t think the video room and scouting reports were gathering dust…

Victorino should stay in the leadoff spot. He absolutely thrived there early in the season. I’m also beginning to wonder about how much longer we keep Rollins–but who would take him at this point? I don’t understand how a whole team can go into a slump in one game and then hit the next. I have no hope that last night’s offense means a thing when tonight gets here. IF this team makes the playoffs, I don’t think they will get very far unless the pitchers throw shut-outs and learn how to hit home runs as well.

I think everyone just needs to stop and realize that the Phillies are now 5-2 in Sept……… 9-3 over their last 12……. and since July 22 they are 31-14…..and over that span of time have gone from being 7 games out to just one half.

    We’ll be fine.

Sportsphan, disagree completely. Vic has ocassional nice games at lead off, then completely loses all plate discipline, especially from the left side (which makes last night so surprising). Rollins isn’t ideal (never really was, doesn’t get on base enough), but he’s the smartest baserunner on the team, far less frustrating than Vic. When he gets on base, the Phils win. Hopefully, yesterday will light a fire under Jimmy.

With next year being his last, he’ll be the 2011 version of Werth (must sign one day, he’s crap the next). There is some talent in the farm, esp at 3rd – could see PP playing short for a year if needed.

There is no doubt in my mind that the Phils make the playoffs. How far we get once in will depend on the offense.
