Phillies Win Old-Fashioned Shootout in Denver, 12-11

2010 Game Recaps, Posts

Add one part thin air, one part erupting offense, one part bad pitching and you get a Coors Original. Not the beer, but a shootout in Denver, just like old times.

The Phillies squeaked by the Colorado Rockies to take the May 11 makeup game, 12-11. Everywhere you looked, something was happening – good or bad. First, the good:

Chase Utley hit a game winning grand slam in the seventh inning, finally breaking out of his season-long slumber. Up until the past few days, he’d been struggling with his swing, and the question became: did Utley come back too fast after injuring a thumb ligament. He silenced the critics with a 2-for-4, six RBI night.

Ryan Howard also went yard in the nine-run seventh, a two-run blast. Howard has also been a relative absentee for the Phillies since his stint on the disabled list ended. That’s now two homers in the last three games for a guy who is notorious for heating up late in the year.

Jayson Werth would not be left out of the fun as he provided some power himself, something seldom seen this season. He hit the other homer in that ridiculous seventh inning, his 19th on the year. In all, 12 Phillies stepped to the plate, nine of them scored.

Offensively as a whole, the Phillies put together 15 hits. They battered the Rockies bullpen, but they themselves were nearly stripped of a win by their own relief crew.

After Joe Blanton was embarrassed, giving up six runs (four earned) over 10 hits in just 4 1/3 innings, the Phillies bullpen did little to give the faithful an easy feeling. Antonio Bastardo struggled through an inning before giving way to the fireworks. Chad Durbin came in the game at 12-7 and it quickly became 12-10. Romero and Contreras teamed up for a scoreless eighth, but the ninth inning was a nail biter.

Brad Lidge was duped by his defense on the first batter as Ryan Howard committed an error, allowing speedster Dexter Fowler to reach base. Red-hot Carlos Gonzalez singled to move Fowler to third a batter later, providing Troy Tulowitzki the opportunity to make it a one-run game. He did so on a fielders choice, and just like that a 7-3 Rockies lead, which had turned to a 12-7 Phillies lead, became 12-11 in the final frame.

Lidge was able to bear down, throwing his patented slider seven times in eight pitches to Clint Barmes and Ryan Spilborghs, both of whom he retired to end the threat. It wasn’t easy, but it is a victory for the Phils, and a big one at that.

Atlanta finally lost to the New York Mets tonight, so the Phils jumped to two back in the NL East and now have a two game lead in the Wild Card.

Hell of a road trip! They finish it 6-1 and now head back to Philadelphia for a weekend set with the Milwaukee Brewers. September has always been a favorite of Ryan Howard’s and the Phillies. They’ve proven that with two big wins to start it off.

This was a take notice game.

I think they have the rest of the MLBs attention now. Particularily the Braves.
With Utley and Howard hitting no team wants to face the Phillies. Noone. Not the Yankees not the rays not anyone.
Beware of the Brewers. Tomorrow is the third city in 3 nights. Lidge should be off the next 2 days at least. Phils need to score early and often vs the Brewers pitching.

This was a great game. Just like old times. Build on this Phillies build on it. On a side note Bastardo looks like he has some good stuff. These where just bloop and lucky hits I think maybe he is a little to perfect to much over the plate. With a little work i think this guy has some potential. What do yall say?

Andrew Miller better dominate the Braves tomorrow. I’m not worried about Cole.

Chuck, Before keep complaining that we don’t go to the ballpark you have to understand the geographical location of the Ballpark. Looks like you have no idea about all that in ATL.. The ball park is located in the extreme south of the city and most of the fans are 30miles away from the park. I am located 50miles away from the ballpark . Also the school system in GA starts early in Aug.. not like in North where you start in September.
And the traffic SUCKS in ATL…,

Desibrave: I live in Tampa, Florida. I travel to my home state of Pennsylvania at the age of 20 years old, working part-time as a Supervisor at a Grocery store and going to the University of South Florida at least 4 times a year. During those 4 times, usually around a week a piece, I managed to attend 8 baseball games at Citizen’s Bank Park, the most recent being our series against the Diamondbacks. While in Pennsylvania, I stay with my father, who lives in Bucks County, about 35-45 miles from Philadelphia. During that Diamondbacks Series, I daily drove to each game and back — using my own money. For you to say your fans don’t go to games because it’s 40-50 miles from Atlanta is pathetic, and a complete joke of an excuse. I know I don’t stand for everyone, but at 20 years old, making around 35,000 dollars a year, paying my way through college, and living on my own, I’d say that if I can go to 8 games a year — In Philadelphia! I’ve also been to 2 games this year in Miami vs Philadelphia, which is about a 3 and a half hour drive from Tampa, and during that series, I paid for 1 night in the Fontainbleau Resort on Collins Avenue for my girlfriend and myself. It’s absolutely pathetic that you made the excuse that your “fans” won’t drive 40 miles. The traffic on I-75, crossing over to I-4, onto I-95 is far worse than the short stretch of 95 through just Atlanta. In fact, Georgia’s the quickest state to travel through until Maryland.

    Give em hell Greg
But hate having the braves pukes outside the gameday threads. They live there and we handle them there usually. They are what they are.
They wont read this. They goto the game night threads strictly to cause trouble.
The next time I goto another teams blog will be the first time.

    @Pheeling
hope you got through the storm

Its a big win. The brewers scare me a little but only for travel and let down reasons.
Phils win the division by 4 plus.

I dont know i driven through Georgia a few times it was a breeze. Must not know the hell that is the 76 and Vine Street Exp.

Or you dont want to make excuses for pathetic attendence of your team?
I swear the last day game there was less than 1,000
Tonight was pathetic with a first place team in Sept with a marquee match up of Hudson-Santana.
There shouldnt be teams in FlA or atlanta.
I wonder why the Phillies have a bigger payroll? Maybe because the fans show up.

Crazy game. Loved seeing the offense break out the last two games, and the bullpen was terrific on this trip. If this keeps up, the NL better watch out. We already know how good the starting pitching is (on most nights).

I think it’s time we give credit where credit’s due: Brad Lidge has reinvented himself as a pretty effective closer. He’s not the same guy from 2008. But I finally feel like we can win in the postseason with him closing games.

I sense the beginning of another great late-season run.

When was the last time our 3/4/5 hitters all homered in the same game?

Finally, Utley has come around. I’ve been waiting all year for this. The Phillies offense is so much more dangerous when Utley is hitting.

We need to take tonight’s game. It could be a letdown after the emotionally draining game last night plus the 3 states in 48 hours. We need to get a few runs for Cole and let him do his thing. Let’s go Phillies!

Starting pitching is awesome… kinda. Blanton (and Kendrick) were starting to show hope, till the last week or so. I hate to say it, cause I love the guy, but Cliff Lee isn’t doing so good in Texas. He had a bad August and is being treated for back problems. I think Reuben is kissing his lucky stars.

That’s the key biz – Cole doing his thing. Yes, this traveling and non stop schedule in September is always a killer. I remember in 06 when the Phils played back to back double headers on a weekend. My grand daughter and I went to the Sunday vs Atlanta – Howard had 3 hrs in the first game, she got to dance with the Phanatic at the second which the Phils lost.

Prior to the year getting underway, the schedule planners need to allow at least 6 or 7 days off in September. Load more up in April or even spread further into October but September normally has 27 or 28 games scheduled, only allowing 4 or 5 days off like every other month. They are just about always filled with make up games.

Back to tonights game. Man, do we need a gem by Hamels. We rarely get the man any run support and the team has to be beat. I too am weary of a letdown and the only solution would be for Cole to toss some heat.

Anyone hear anything about Tuesday nights starter? This is the only $dog night for me this year! One of my favorite – I like dont eat for 36 hours before the game…

    Yesssiirrrrrrrrrrrrr….

Had a feeling that the Phillies would have to punish the bullpen to get a win; Chacin is a nice young pitcher and Joe Blanton was not built for Coors. No way anyone expected it to go down like it did but watching the game early, you could just feel that the bats were ready to go.

Fear the Brewers?? Capuano/Hamels, Bush/Halladay, Wolf/Kendrick… evey time I type Kendrick’s name, I slow down and one finger type his entire name (sort of like when Seinfeld says Newman really slow, only I’m typing). We should roll.

Hudson lost last night so the Braves are heading into the next four games without their ace… Kawakami/Miller, Jurrjens/Johnson, Minor/Sanabia. The Fish could easily take 2 out of 3.

Its games like that, that I LOVE being a Phillies PHan in Colorado! LOL. Could be the ignorrant idiots I had to deal with last night at Queensryche, who just so happened to be wearing Rockies crap. I can tell you I got some nasty looks and death stares. LOL and I LOVED it. LOL. Not like Most Rockies fans are ignorrant idiots, they arent mets fans after all, but still love seeing lots of runs onr board and a NINE run inning for a win. Obviously I wish Blanton and Bullpen didnt have to make it interesting, but at the end of the day, and the end of the season, a win is a win is a win! I figured Howard and Utley would figure it out, it was just when they would figure it out. They have a habit of going NUTS this time of year, so if this is the typical late season insane push to the playoffs we have all come to love in the last 3 years, with the number of games left against the Tomahacks (yes I meant that spelling) this could get fun.

Right now, I am still just hoping for the Wild Card honestly. Of course they have a chance of taking the division, and have done so with more games back, less games to play, but that was also against the Muts and their patented late season choke session. LOL. Braves are pretty good team, and I hope hits a slump and we keep pushing. The Braves are most certainly NOT unbeatable, nor do I believe they are better than the Phillies. After all, through all of the injuries (most in the NL I believe, and behind the Red Sox for most in MLB, not 100% sure) we are still only 2 games back!

As for the comments on $ Dog Night…LOL, only on Phillies Nation, with a bunch of die hard Phillies Phans can we have conversation about $ Dog Nights and not eating for 36 hours prior like we have known each for life. LOL. Or for that matter, can we have a “brawl” about who is more clutch, or if Lidge is going to blow a save. LOL. You gotta love this place!

Think about THIS irony… The Phillies went 6-1 on the trip. The one loss was sustained by….Roy Halladay.

    Funny game, this baseball.

I agree that we should roll against the Brewers. My only concern is maybe a little letdown after yesterday. Can’t get complacent now. The Brewers have some bats. Hamels really needs to be sharp tonight to give that pen a rest.

  • Posts: 0 Brian Sr. of CO

One more thing…@ The original Chuck P and “No way anyone expected it to go down like it did but watching the game early, you could just feel that the bats were ready to go.” I will say, you couldnt script or make that game up. LOL. I was standing in line for the concert following the game on my phone standing in awe of watching the runs PILE on. You were right, I never expected it to go down like that.

    You tell em greg!

Last night’s win was HUUUUUGE. If howard and utley really are back, everyone better watch out. This team has proven over and over that they really shine moreso in september. I have no doubt the division will end up being ours.

Let’s hope the offense gets some runs support for my main man cole tonight.

    Chase Utley arrived last night.

I still say he came back too early if it took him this long to get his swing back. But the important thing is, he has arrived along with SEPTEMBER, which renders the argument almost moot.

@Chuck: You really do have shake your head and chuckle sometimes. For a morale booster, if it had to be either Doc or Cole, I’d suffer the loss for Doc because Cole NEEDED that win and it was long deserved.

I agree…Cole deserved it. Hopefully, another W in his column tonight. For all he’s done this year it would be nice for him to have a winning record for the season.

But Kate, if he had spent more time on the DL and in the minors, letting his hand heal and getting his swing back, he wouldn’t have spent the past two weeks seeing major league pitching. We all know that he wasn’t himself early on but he’s got it back and we’ve been playing ok… he has been able to adjust and I’m not sure if he would be where he is today without jumping back into the fire.

I’ve been very critical of Chase… this is what we’ve all been waiting for.

Honeslty many people have been critical of Utley (rightfully so), because we have been spoiled. Through all of and being critical, I dont know about you, I still love him on the team, and I have my 2 (almost 3) yr old syaing 2 sayings now, “GO PHILLIES” (usually sounds like Go Phiwwees” (doesnt quite have the L just yet, but its cute) and “Vote for Chase” (sounds like Vote chase, doesnt wuite get the “for” just yet.)

Is it me, or does Bastardo have really good stuff? He had a little bad luck last night or he would have come away with a clean inning. I might feel comfortable with him in the postseason (should we get there).

I spend a lot of time on the message boards and Phillies blog sites… last week, I started making a cry for everyone to stop avoiding the 300 pound gorilla in the room. That being, Chase Utley’s futility this season… at that time, he was meandering around .260 with only 1 HR since May 21st… HOWEVER… the scapegoats were mainly Jayson Werth, Ryan Howard and Jimmy Rollins. Chase Utley gets a free pass for normal slumps… deservedly so… but this was no ordinary slump. I’m not saying that Chase reads the message boards but he certainly feels the pressure and if there’s one thing that Chase wants more than anything else, it’s to be successful and live up to the expectation that he has helped create in that clubhouse. He doesn’t want to let the fans down and I think that while everyone felt bad for Chase initially (the hip injury last year and the thumb injury this year), the “free pass” wasn’t helping matters…

Of course Bastardo has good stuff. Control is sometimes an issue. Remember they took him to the WS last year.

    Dipsy,
If I’m correct, Bastardo was a September call-up and therefore can’t be on our postseason roster. I don’t know for sure if he was or if this is the case but I am pretty sure September call-ups can’t be on the postseason roster.

Chuck- No way I’m sitting anywhere near Brooks!

I have never been one to give Chase an unnecessary “free pass.” Why should HE not be held accountable for his game when Howard, Werth, Rollins, at al are CONSTANTLY being criticized.

I’m glad that the fans got on him a bit. Whether or not he noticed that…who knows….but yeah, you are right, Chase truly wants to play well and not let the team down.

Dipsy…so can we say that Bastardo is i?t….the loogy we’ve wanted and needed? I sure hope so….(since we don’t have Scott Eyre)

Another funny thing about this website. When one of us does not show up for days or weeks, people begin to wonder where the went. You gotta love that sort of comraderie from people who probably have never met. LOL. For instance, I was able to log on for one of the VERY FEW times in the last few weeks, and when I finally logged on again, Andrew from Waldorf asked where I had been. LOL. I dont know about you guys, but I dont know any other board in sports that hat that sort of conistant “regulars” commenting, or in the case of Andrew and I arguing :) about their sports teams. Gotta love it. But Chuck has a good point, where is Don M? :)

I have always liked Bastardo… I’m not so sure they didn’t pull the plug on his starting days too early but he’s definitely a great LOOGY and can help this team in that role. He’s excelling as a reliever so maybe I’m dead wrong with that remark but he was compared to Johan Santana at one point… Johan started his MLB career bouncing between starter/reliever and he didn’t assume a full-time starting role until age 25 so maybe there’s hope that Bastardo could find that consistency which has allowed Johan to be so successful without the height/power that most pitchers possess. Consistency is the only thing that is limiting Bastardo at this point (that and confidence in his change-up). Is there anyone out there that would rather see 6 innings of Kyle Kendrick (rather than 6 innings of Antonio Bastardo)?

Great win by the Phillies yesterday. How I have missed you offense my old friend.

Excluding the last six games against the Braves, I think we are now heading into the seven most important games of the season starting tonight. The Phils HAVE to be tired at this point. They have not had an off day in a while and had to cross the country and back in the last two weeks and now they are being asked to play 7 games in 6 days. Even playing at home that’s tough and could prove disastrous considering that after the Marlins the Braves play the Pirates. The only good news is that we might not get to play again Josh Johnson.

If the Phils can go 5-2 in this home stand that I think we are in very good shape for the rest of September although even 4-3 might be enough depending on how the Braves do.

This is a cool board… it’s a nice place to gauge the pulse of our fan base. It helps kill time at work… I don’t do Gameday Threads because I’m too much of a homer to listen to the crap that some people spew on those things and I’m generally chasing my kids around while I’m watching the games but I like the daytime crowd. You guys are good people… even though I don’t know you and you could be sitting at home doing bad things.

It’s true Brian Sr… and yesterday during that game while I was posting something on here, I thought to myself: Hey that guy Brian Sr of COLORADO is probably in that game haha

You know who else disappeared.. Georgie! Where’d she go??

I will go as far as to say that game day threads are a waste of time. I wanna watch the game dammit, not type! Ahhhh, if some people like it then god bless. They have always said that the key to Bastardo is his change and how he doesn’t like to throw it. Nothing travels father than a botched change up but if that is his pitch, he’s gotta throw it or be destined to be a loogy. I would like to call Bastardso, Antonio “Inglorious” Bastardo. Anyone with me? Thumbs up? Down?
