Phillies Win Old-Fashioned Shootout in Denver, 12-11

2010 Game Recaps, Posts
Add one part thin air, one part erupting offense, one part bad pitching and you get a Coors Original. Not the beer, but a shootout in Denver, just like old times.
The Phillies squeaked by the Colorado Rockies to take the May 11 makeup game, 12-11. Everywhere you looked, something was happening – good or bad. First, the good:
Chase Utley hit a game winning grand slam in the seventh inning, finally breaking out of his season-long slumber. Up until the past few days, he’d been struggling with his swing, and the question became: did Utley come back too fast after injuring a thumb ligament. He silenced the critics with a 2-for-4, six RBI night.
Ryan Howard also went yard in the nine-run seventh, a two-run blast. Howard has also been a relative absentee for the Phillies since his stint on the disabled list ended. That’s now two homers in the last three games for a guy who is notorious for heating up late in the year.
Jayson Werth would not be left out of the fun as he provided some power himself, something seldom seen this season. He hit the other homer in that ridiculous seventh inning, his 19th on the year. In all, 12 Phillies stepped to the plate, nine of them scored.
Offensively as a whole, the Phillies put together 15 hits. They battered the Rockies bullpen, but they themselves were nearly stripped of a win by their own relief crew.
After Joe Blanton was embarrassed, giving up six runs (four earned) over 10 hits in just 4 1/3 innings, the Phillies bullpen did little to give the faithful an easy feeling. Antonio Bastardo struggled through an inning before giving way to the fireworks. Chad Durbin came in the game at 12-7 and it quickly became 12-10. Romero and Contreras teamed up for a scoreless eighth, but the ninth inning was a nail biter.
Brad Lidge was duped by his defense on the first batter as Ryan Howard committed an error, allowing speedster Dexter Fowler to reach base. Red-hot Carlos Gonzalez singled to move Fowler to third a batter later, providing Troy Tulowitzki the opportunity to make it a one-run game. He did so on a fielders choice, and just like that a 7-3 Rockies lead, which had turned to a 12-7 Phillies lead, became 12-11 in the final frame.
Lidge was able to bear down, throwing his patented slider seven times in eight pitches to Clint Barmes and Ryan Spilborghs, both of whom he retired to end the threat. It wasn’t easy, but it is a victory for the Phils, and a big one at that.
Atlanta finally lost to the New York Mets tonight, so the Phils jumped to two back in the NL East and now have a two game lead in the Wild Card.
Hell of a road trip! They finish it 6-1 and now head back to Philadelphia for a weekend set with the Milwaukee Brewers. September has always been a favorite of Ryan Howard’s and the Phillies. They’ve proven that with two big wins to start it off.

I know the pen gave up some runs, but really Durbin was the only one who got hit hard. Bastardo had some bad luck bounces and a bad call/play by Ryan. Should have gotten out of the inning with giving up the run, but he hung tough and only gave up one run which I think was unearned, which was huge one out bases loaded run in, and not to give up any more, that is stepping up for they young lefty. I am not sure who you can use out of the pen tonight, Cole may have to go 9, Contreous, and Madson maybe, Madson got the night off so he should be ready. Hopefully no Lidge he has pitched what 4 days in a row. Good road trip now a return home. Will be there sunday. And to the point of Braves fans not wanting to drive 40 miles, I live in Vermont and have the Sunday package, Ok so I do not go to all 14 games, my sister gets four for christmas, but I travel to Philly for the other 9 plus playoffs and that is Saturday morning down to Doylestown, Sunday night back to Vermont work on Monday, over 700 miles round trip.

Little nervous that Cole might get screwed again tonight, cause of the long trip home, does anyone know if Cole was even at the game last night, or did he fly home from LA. That would make sense, but with some philly fans that might be a sign of disrespect for the team, and not being a team player. Hopefully they had an easy flight home, but you have to figure they did not get home until after 2 am. But winning does wonders for the tired and weary. Good that Chooch had the night off, any chance Dom Brown and Ben Fran play tonight, and maybe even Valdez for Polly since he got hit it the elbow last night? Would suck for Cole but they might need to do that.

GameDay threads….generally I don’t participate. I like to watch the game too. But, occasionally, I’ll get involved if it’s a really exciting situation and I want to see what my phellow phans are saying.
But, I’m really more of a daytimer.

shag…just curious about something…..some months ago…early in the season….someone from the Channel 17 postgame show interviewed a fan from Vermont after the Sunday game…I believe it was in Chickie’s and Pete’s??….Was that, by chance, you?

@Dipsy–I like the game day threads for this reason, it’s like sitting in a bar with a bunch of people watching the game, except I’m doing it at home. I can’t do it every game, but do enjoy it.
“Inglorious Bastardo” has a decent chance of sticking, I like it.

Lefty, this is what I do instead of participating in game day threads. I sit in a bar with a bunch of people watching the game. This gives me entertainment value AND an off chance at scoring some companionship at the same time. Social multi tasking. Afternooon games are the best. Beer just takes hold of woman in a different way at 3:00 in the afternoon. Being drunk while the sun shines bright. Disorienting yet thrilling at the same time. Nobody has to worry about getting up for work, blah. Usually, I suggest that a lady stick around for Post Game Live and if she does…..slam dunk. And we’re all home in time for for the replay at 7:30. What a country.

I only started posting on this board at the beginning of the season, but I agree that PN has given us a fine board to post on. I don’t agree with everyone all the time, but I do learn from your perspective.
And despite the fact that you are all a bunch of vapid grunes- KIDDING! Just kidding! I really respect all the editors and posters here, and enjoy all of your comments.
This is a fun place. Very few Trolls compared to some boards, and it’s easy to ignore them in this format.

Most non retards can type and watch the game at the same time.

Firstly, you call ME a retard. Then YOU proclaim in your very next post the games against the Brewers will be the “toughest series of the season”. Hmmmmm.

Nope sorry, do not get to go anywhere except back home after the game on Sunday My wife has to work in the morning, and I run a restaurant so I can come in when ever I want. Also if any of you are ever in the Burlington/Colchester area of Vermont, there is a couple of drinks waiting for you at T-Bones Restaurant and Bar in Colchester VT right next to the Hampton Inn

The Phillies usually handle the Brewers in the past couple of years, just a little worried about the amount of games played in a row. That Monday Double header is going to be tough, any news on who will be pitching the second game, or will Roy 2 pitch at night, then who will pitch the first game? Carpenter seems to have done OK in the past, and the Fish are a team that he can handle I would think.
I too am not a big fan of game day threads, will read them after the fact, plus I work most nights so I DVR the Phillies game and try not to see the score on the TV in the bar and go home and watch it like it was live, except I get to skip all the comercials and trips to the mound, and pitching changes. The one bad thing about LA games starting so late on the east coast, LA loves to have mound visits, both by Torre and the catcher and I can not FF past it.
Maybe it is a coincidence but every since I paid for my post season tickets the Phillies are winning, HMMMM. Plus I got lucky and am have WS tickets if they get there, which was not guaranteed, was at game 5 last year. By the way the usually win when I am there so if anybody wants to give me tickets to all playoff home games(if they make it) I think that would be a good Idea.

Andrew you do not think the Braves games will be tougher then the Brewers games, I must be missing something. The most imported series is the 6 games left against the Braves, but they all hold importence. The 6 games against the Braves really holds the key 4 or 5 out of 6 and the division is ours. But all the games will matter if we faulter against the Braves so that we can hold on to the wild card

This is a trap series.
They will be up for the Braves thats not an issue.
This is city 3 in 3 days.

I get the 3 cities in 3 days thing and 22 games in a row or something like that, but I think the Fish will be tougher seeing that is 4 game set, and the Phillies have traditionally handled the Brew-Crew in the past. Plus I think with only 28 games left they will be up for all the teams they play, this is not August where they can skate by teams, they all have been here before and know they can not relax now.

Very exciting game last night against the Rockies. THe game will hopefully set the stage for a magnificent September where both the offense and pitching click and we win the NL East. I hope Howard is heating up and ready to roll. It looks real good

Crab fries before the wieners. Hmmm… all preceded by an ice cold 6 pack in relaxing style in the parking lot prior to the game.
Nobody will be sitting in front of me, the rail to the rf foul pole is holding my beer!
Hahha! Actually, you guys are a gas. Your personalities are all different, unique and down right funny at time – not only that, you guys are I think pretty bright fans with some decent ideas – not that anyone but us will listen to them, Cholly doesn’t give a hoot who we think would be best to lead off (Werth…).
Back to the Phils – They are in the midst of 24 straight games – 23 days of hard nosed baseball. A stellar performance by Cole is probably needed in order for the Phils to come away with a W tonight, this has been a grueling schedule. The Braves too are in the midst of playing 20 in a row. Big difference they are playing away for 6 straight then have the pleasure of coming home only to face the Cards who might be waking from thier coma anytime soon for 4 games.
The Phils of course start out with 3 vs the Brewers and I agree it is a pretty important series. They need to at least take 2 of 3.
Crazy year eh? Huge disappointments scattered throughout but we are still on the verge of WS #3.

shag…I will remember that if I am ever up you way. Thanks.
Headed down to the park in a few minutes. Traffic’s gonna be bad with Labor Day weekend and the Temple/Villanova game at the link. Oh well…it’s worth it. Hopefully, we’ll see a W!!!

The Brewers are dead… they’re playing for nothing at this point. They just got swept by the Reds and that’s all folks. They have one decent pitcher, Gallardo, and a bunch of ho-hums… Wolf is the only probable starter that scares me because he always plays up for us.

Hey Chuck my mom lives in Doylestown, that is where I stay when I am down there. I just drive to Fernrock grab the subway and off I go, total time less than an hour from my moms to walking in the Bank. No traffic, and if you go down early no crowds on the subway, and on the way home subway is usually almost empty by the time you leave city hall stop

Andrew, yes, because Chris Capuano and the rest of that terrible Brewers rotation is so tough. If you think really think they’re tough than you know less about baseball than I previously thought.
They have a good lineup, but their all around pitching is one of the worst in the league, if not the majors.
The Marlins are dangerous. They get off on playing spoiler to contending teams. That’s their mission in life…. to try and destroy the hopes of the teams playing for something.

Here I thought we could divest to a dating site?? Oh well – just a thought.
My neighbor told me that he drives to Chickie & Pete’s, valet parking and for $10 takes the shuttle to the game – its called the Crab Bus – after the game the shuttle runs like every 10 minutes and you are so close the 76 there is virtually no wait.
I will try that next time. Sunday

When I think of a “trap” series or “trap” game, its usually when you have just come off a big win against a big opponent and you have your eyes on the team you play after the current series, which would be the Marlins. The Marlins do not fall in that category. Anyway, to me, there is no such thing as a “trap” game when you are in the heat of a pennant race because a trap insinuates a letdown. If you can’t stay up, or as Sarge likes to say “stay hard”, in September then you don’t deserve to win. I believe “traps” apply more to football. That said, I expect to crush the everloving s#it out of the Brewers.

Haha hasn’t shag said before he has a wife? I’m pretty sure her or my boyfriend wouldn’t be too happy about us getting lucky.
Although, I’d be down for PN turning into a dating site. I’m sick of the sox shitheads I deal with on a regular basis who don’t know or understand real baseball.
