Phils Win, 5-1, in Escape from Los Angeles

2010 Game Recaps, Posts
The Phillies seemed to put it all together for their fifth win on this California road trip, as La Furia Roja blasted past the Dodgers, 5-1. Jimmy Rollins led off with his seventh homer of the year, and one inning later, Shane Victorino followed suit. J-Roll would later add another RBI, driving in Domonic Brown with a double in the top of the 9th. Chase Utley doubled thrice from the two-hole, driving in insurance runs in the top of the 7th inning off converted catcher Kenley Jansen and in the 9th off Hong-Chih Kuo.
All told, the Phillies tallied 10 hits, seven for extra bases, and scored on each of the four Dodger pitchers.
Roy Oswalt, for his part, pitched very well in 6 1/3 innings, despite throwing 115 pitches and tying a career high with six walks. It looked like The Speedwagon would combine with Brad Lidge on a no-hitter for the second time in his career, at least until Casey Blake singled to right in the sixth inning for the Dodgers’ only hit off Oswalt.
The bullpen, which had been implacable in recent days, once again made things interesting. After J.C. Romero ended the seventh on a double play, Ryan Madson allowed a run in the eighth on a James Loney single, which missed being a home run by a couple feet. Though Jamey Carroll scored on the play, Matt Kemp missed second base initially, forcing him to go back and holding James Loney at first. That became important when the next batter, Casey Blake, grounded into a 6-3 double play. Instead of getting out of the inning, Madson would have faced Phillie Killer Rod Barajas with runners on second and third. Brad Lidge closed out a four-run game successfully for the second time in 17 hours.
Speaking of Barajas, he and Andre Ethier, who hit Phillies pitching like Chris Brown hit Matt Kemp’s girlfriend, combined to go 0-for-7 with a walk. No doubt their quiet afternoon contributed to the Phillies’ victory.
The sun gave outfielders fits all day long. Jayson Werth lost a Barajas pop-up in short right field in fifth inning, and Dodger left fielder Scott Podsednik lost no fewer than four fly balls in the sun–both home runs, plus Utley’s 7th-inning double and Brown’s 9th-inning ground rule double–thought relatively little damage came of these missteps.
Tomorrow, the Phillies head to Denver for a makeup game against the Rockies. Joe Blanton takes the mound for the Phillies against Gustavo Chacin Jhoulys Chacin.

I like our chances against Chacin tomorrow. He was great early but as mentioned is slowing down. Let’s make it 6-1 on the West Coast tomorrow!

Are the mets/braves being broadcast locally?
Also, a win tomorrow could be a huge blow to the suddenly playoff hopeful Rockies. It’s just one game but it’s a chance at a full game push back.

HOW BOUT THAT SHIT PHILLY ?
Alright nation here’s the deal . Were sittin on 75 wins with 29 games
left. Twenty and nine puts us on that 95 win total . I predicted this team
would win 100 games this year in april. I know i’m eating that prediction
but that was based on a healthy team. If they can pull off the 20-9 and get to 95 wins with the adversity they faced this year it would be more impressive than a healthy team winning 100. The phils went 17-13 last
september so 20-9 is not pie in the sky with H2O at the top. If we saw a little glimpse the last couple days of ryan and chase coming around look out . Hitting is truly contageous and if they get goin watch everyone follow suit. Just imagine if POLLY is POLLY also. We all looked at this lineup in april and said WHAT IF ? We never got a chance to let this monster of a lineup feed itself and when i say that i’m referring to the contagious part of hitting. I really believe our real starting 8 hitting at theyre potential is the best in baseball. Yes yankee fans THE BEST !
When you combine that with the best 1,2,3 starters this 47 year old fan ever saw on the phillies my friend ANDREW is right . If they play like theyre capable ……………………. you fill in the blanks.

Mike – I cannot even imagine what this team would do if the hitting started up like it was in April and early May – wow. With the pitching we have now, 20-9 is not a laugh.

david wright got his 1st hit tonite at turner field this year.
He was like 0 for 32 before his lead off double tonite in his 2nd at bat.
Of course the mets left him there. Wow are they horrible.
How does Omar Minaya have a job. They have the 5th highest payroll
in baseball and are a “AA” team , pathetic. Hey met trolls “BITE ME”.
I know you don’t have the balls to come here now , but i said it anyway
in case your reading this. The mets are most likely gonna lose 4 straight
at turner field. We’ll take care of business ourselves. The Braves play the Cards in a 4 game set this month , hopefully the Cardinals get theyre act together by then.——–

Reds with a three run bomb, Chapman in line for first win. The Cardinals will be 8 games out! Unbelieveable.
Chapman’s the real deal. clocked at 104 tonight, then breaks your back with 88mph slider.

Utley an Howard are showing sings of getting close. I know its only 2 games but its something positive. There isnt much time left now however I feel if anyone can get it together quick it would be Utley. Howard may start to come a little later hopefully not much later. Our pitching has been phenomenal and thank goodness for that as it has saved our season. I can only hope the offense gets in gear. Been a little be of a realist we cant expect this high level of pitching all the time. We cant expect The Roys and Cole to shut down or only give a run or two in every game. Blanton has looked good last few games however we never know which Blanton we going to get and how many runs he will give up in first. The Phils must score runs. It sucks that we dont have Jamie around and now have to rely on Kendrick. It is what it is. Excuse time is over all 8 starters are back on the field and have had enough games back to get it together. We have a pretty tough schedule coming up. Say what you say about the Mets but you know they always bring out there best when they face us so the Nats. Its going to be close guys hang on for the ride.

Oswalt, Hamels, Kendrick- Man if someone had bet me in the beginning of the year that only one of those three would have a winning record, and it would be Kendrick, I’d have lost some serious money.
You’re right Bacardi- the pitching has been phenomenal. Hope they can keep it up. It’s a pitchers year.

The mets are the worst.
Nats got in a nice brawl with the marlns tonight. they have heart. they may help us this year even with having no talent.
I was discussing announcers in another thread. Rob dibble did get fired for his comments on Strasburg. I thought dibble was pretty good.

Dibble was honest. Most teams don’t like that, they like guys like Wheels.

Its a shame about Dibble. Now if the Phils had him in there instead of Wheeler. Instantly mccarthy is better. Thats why I dont get on mccarthy. He is working with a handicap.
I suspect dibble wont resurface though. Like yu said he was honest and teams dont like that. He won me over last year by saying the truth about how bad the Nats are. It was refreshing.

Yeah Andrew,
It is a shame to lose an analyst that has balls, but to be honest, I only watch the Nats when they play the Phils. So I won’t miss him that much.
I’m excited about getting to listen to Phil W again now that I know where he is. Thanks again for that.
I’m out, 4:30 wake up tomorrow.

A couple homers, a half a dozen doubles, Jimmy crossing home 3 times…. What the hell is going on?
Hopefully Blanton has some fire in that big belly of his and he continues pitching the way he has been. A 6-1 road trip would be incredible.
A win here would be like a hard hook in the jaw of these Rox. We could cool their jets a little AND put another game between us and them.
Lets go Phightins!

The Braves are doing what they need to, wiping their collective tushes with the Muts. The Phils do not traditionally have such an easy time with either the Muts, Marlins, Nats or the Braves -
We have in the past taken apart each of these teams in different years although I think the best we have done recently vs the Muts is 11-7, vs the Fish about the same. 3 years ago we were 15-3 vs the Braves. It looks like with the last 25 games of the season being played in our own division, we need to go at least 17-8 with the next 4 games 3-1. That would put the Phils at 20-9 and a total of 95 wins. Giving what the Braves have left to play and their current record, they would have to go 16-13 or 17-12 in order for us to finish at least with a tie (for us to take the series from them, the tie breaker – we would have to go at least 4-2 vs the Braves). Either way, unless the Phils can dominate in this last month, 3 games will be hard to make up.
Hopefully, the 5 hits from Utley in the last 2 games and the way that Howard is making contact with the ball are not mirages. This could be the start of something big but damn, this is exhausting!

As much as I really don’t want to look at the wild card, it may be what we will be working with to get in to the Post season. And, if that is the case, who do the Phils face? Someone mentioned earlier that SD is falling, hard too. Losing 7 straight now. It appears that the Reds are going to have the #1 or #2 best record in the NL – so, if the Phils take the WC, I think we would be facing them. With the Braves facing whoever comes out of the West -
Question for everyone, if the Phils do take the WC, and the Braves lose to the West team – the Phils have a better W-L record, who would be the NLCS home team? The WC team with the better W-L record or the West Division champs?
