Remember that playoff atmosphere from the last Braves-Phillies series? Well, with the Phils hell-bent on emptying the bench and the best record in the National League locked up, there’s not really a whole lot for La Furia Roja to play for. Of course, you could say that knocking the Braves out of the playoffs would be reward enough, but the Wild Card (to say nothing of the NL West race) will be decided in California this weekend.

For the past two months, the Braves and Padres have been stumbling like two drunks toward the finish line, and it looks like Atlanta has been the less incapacitated of the drunks leading up to this weekend. Any Atlanta win or San Diego loss will guarantee the Braves at least a one-game playoff for the Wild Card.

Kyle Kendrick will make his last-gasp case for a spot on the playoff roster tonight. Kendrick’s two starts in Atlanta this year were arguably his two best–eight innings of four-hit shutout ball on April 20 and seven innings, one earned run, five hits and four strikeouts on June 2. Of course, both of those starts turned out to be one-run losses, but I guess you can’t have everything.

Today’s lineup: Rollins SS, Francisco RF, Utley 2B, Howard 1B, Werth CF, Ibanez LF, Dobbs 3B, Ruiz C, Kendrick P

Victory LagerYour gameday beer: Sweetwater 420
This is the signature beverage from the best Atlanta-based bottler this side of Coca-Cola. Sweetwater 420 is a light, crisp ale. It’s not as hoppy as most IPAs, but while it’s not a particularly serious beverage, it’s from Atlanta and it’s pretty tasty. -by Michael

  • Happy Kyle Kendrick’s last start day!

I’d like to see Kyle Kendrick go deep into the game and win tonight, ending the season with a winning record. Also, I would like to see Gload in there tonight and playing left field and Sweeney playing first base. Give Ibanez and Howard an extra day off. But….. I am just a fan.

    @ bart

I think once SD is eliminated charlie will really play the B team.
He owes it to the integrity of the game to play at least something approaching a major league line up. Imagine if we were SD fans. Wed want at least that. Its enough we are resting the staff. I think madson and Lidge get in 2 games though here.

Anybody have any thoughts on who the Phils will pursue in free agency? It’s probably a little early to consider this, but Jose Lopez may be available. He plays for Seattle and 2010 was his only bad year. He will be 28 next year and plays third, short and second plus both corner outfield positions. He has some pop hitting as many as 27 homers in a year. His OBP could use some lifting but he may be a solid all-round utility player since we are not getting any younger and he could help out at multiple positions. Remember Mariono Duncan and how valuable he was playing many positions for us back in the early 90′s?

Actually looking at the standings if Sd beats SF and we beat ATL tonight its gets more intersting.

    If that happens

    SF 91-69
    atl 90-70
    SD 89-71

Puts alot of heat on ATL. ATL fans should be happy we dont need these games or theyd be in trouble. I bet Charlie wouldnt mind knocking the Braves out at all.
I guess ill monitor that game after the phils tonight.
    I want to win tonight.

@ Bart I think the big “new” player next year is dominc Brown.
Oswalt is signed through next year. So I suspect another mid range guy. Doubt any position player will get anyone too excited.
What Id really like to see is some pitchers for the pen. Middle or late innings even. Cant have enough good closers.
Even sign a closer. Love ow lidge has been but hes nto getting any younger and hes been banged up last few years. The Twins have 2 closers now 3 if you include the injured guy who was out for the year.

San DIego closer Heath Bell may be available. He is one of the best in baseball averaging over a strikeout per inning. He has 45 saves and a 1.86 ERA so far this year. He may command more from the Phils than what we are willing to sacrifice. I just do not see Lidge beyond this playoff series. He has the heart of a lion but it seems his arm and body are just caving in. I mention Jose Lopez because he is a utility possibility. But, who knows. We have the playoffs to worry about. I just cannot get excited about this series. But I am trying.

Belive me we want to win especially tonight. Its a good jab at the Braves. And looking at line ups and pitching match ups the phils should win tonight. Then you can watch SD-SF and id Sd wins the noose tightens on the braveless. Whom I have no love for.

Love to have Bell and Lidge and Madson.
If phils got Bell at 8 -10 mil Id have no issue with it.
In the 7th 8th or 9th hes dominant.

Next year’s lineup is going to be Lefty heavy, I think it may go something like this:

    Let’s go, Kendrick!

I think he finishes the season strong.

Man, when we passed through San Diego, I think we stole their mojo. They just went into a complete tailspin after the Phillies series and then the Phillies tore it up through LA, San Diego, Colorado, and then back at home.

  • Worley will start tomorrow. Hamels will start Sunday. Oswalt will follow Hamels out of pen. Dubee said Hamels looked great in bullpen today.

  • Update on playoff rotations, Hamels’ health & Phillies game plan for this weekend… http://bit.ly/ajWrR5

  • There is a big “6″ mowed into the outfield grass for Bobby Cox. I think secretly its for ryan howard, since he kills atlanta……..LOL

  • Funny how these things work out. Phillies superscout Charley Kerfeld, their most trusted pair of eyes, has been scouting Reds last 10 days.

Wheeler talking about the huge crowds. LOL
I think hes just a nice person and cant help but say good things about opponents.

Kendrick needs to be beat out for 5th starter next year. I will be pulling for Moyer.

Now hes talking abotu SF fans LOL

He makes me laugh. If you take wheeler as campy and a goof ( the hair being he best) you can enjoy him. Braodcaster? He stinks.

    Will Dobbs get to .200?

    I am thinking no way

For the record, I have faith that Dobbs will contribute nothing to the Phils in this series or the playoffs

    Dobbs does it again.

I really can’t stand this guy.

  • Posts: 0 Andrew from waldorf

    Dobbs LOL

come on how could anyone want him on a roster?

Its debatable if he should even be on TONIGHTS roster let alone a playoff roster.

Andrew is back at it I see. You really hate the Braves, don’t you? Makes me wonder if you just cringed for years and years as the Braves stomped the Phillies and the rest of the league all those years and now it’s all coming out. That’s understandable.

Did you say “stomped the Phillies”? Like Chipper and Bobby stomped their wives?

  • Posts: 0 Andrew from waldorf

WTF is Wheeler talking about? if the Braves represnted the NL in the WS it would be an embarrassment to the NL. Luckily the chances of that are 0.00%

Kendrick just retired the side jay

The Braves are irrelevant to me because they pose no threat to my team. I do hate people who troll internet blogs though.

  • Posts: 0 Andrew from waldorf

But sarge Bobby didnt win alot
He lost 17 of 18 straight trips to the playoffs

Braves are making the playoffs based on the first half performance. The Giants are going to embarrass them.

I wasn’t expecting the Phillies to win tonight, but if they do, Im going to find it hilarious.
