Remember that playoff atmosphere from the last Braves-Phillies series? Well, with the Phils hell-bent on emptying the bench and the best record in the National League locked up, there’s not really a whole lot for La Furia Roja to play for. Of course, you could say that knocking the Braves out of the playoffs would be reward enough, but the Wild Card (to say nothing of the NL West race) will be decided in California this weekend.

For the past two months, the Braves and Padres have been stumbling like two drunks toward the finish line, and it looks like Atlanta has been the less incapacitated of the drunks leading up to this weekend. Any Atlanta win or San Diego loss will guarantee the Braves at least a one-game playoff for the Wild Card.

Kyle Kendrick will make his last-gasp case for a spot on the playoff roster tonight. Kendrick’s two starts in Atlanta this year were arguably his two best–eight innings of four-hit shutout ball on April 20 and seven innings, one earned run, five hits and four strikeouts on June 2. Of course, both of those starts turned out to be one-run losses, but I guess you can’t have everything.

Today’s lineup: Rollins SS, Francisco RF, Utley 2B, Howard 1B, Werth CF, Ibanez LF, Dobbs 3B, Ruiz C, Kendrick P

Victory LagerYour gameday beer: Sweetwater 420
This is the signature beverage from the best Atlanta-based bottler this side of Coca-Cola. Sweetwater 420 is a light, crisp ale. It’s not as hoppy as most IPAs, but while it’s not a particularly serious beverage, it’s from Atlanta and it’s pretty tasty. -by Michael

Bobby Cox gave that GS to Jimmy on a silver platter. He’s got to know the difference in how JRoll hits righty vs lefty, and he brought in the lefty one batter before Jimmy due up.

BravoMan slinks silently into the dark sewers, his dreams shredded and his hopes dashed. No longer can he hold his head high. Only the spew of sewage fills his nostrils as he sinks slowly deeper into the the filth of humiliation and defeat. He cannot even open his mouth for fear of it being filled with a severely bad taste. Yes, this defeat will leave a bad taste in his mouth that will be remembered for years to come. Poor bastard !!!!

@Kate: I think the Phillies fans will cheer Burrell… as long as he doesn’t do anything that helps his team!

I still can’t believe that Rollins grand slam.

    WIDE OPEN.

Well, of course I can believe it, but I can’t.

Hey brother mike ! how you doing buddy? I’m not normally this obnoxious, but I am so tired of the Trolls invading our board.

You are right about the AL- the Twins limping too, but they haven’t had Mauer.

    Where are the trolls
    There ought to be trolls
    Maybe next year.

Oh, they’ll give him some love. I didn’t mean to suggest otherwise. But this is the postseason.

The reds can swing the bat. If thier starters stepped up
the Reds could maybe do something. I doubt it though.

SF has the kind of pitching that could hypotheticly beat anyone. So there should be some fear. But the phils should win both series.

The braves should be barred from the post season. It reflects poorly on the sport.

Gonna monitor Giants-pads now for you guys.

    @ lefty

I thnk that you understand alot of my Braves bashing is 100% for the trolls. They deserve it and have made it where I am not giving the Braves any respect even if they did hypotheticly earn some.

    2 hits for Greggy!

I dont think the Yankees are a lock at all to make WS. Theyre pitching problems are not a mirage. Look up the ERA’S , Pettitte is getting old fast , Burnett just stinks , Hughes is a kid but not bad. After CC they have nothing compared to our big three. I really dont think theyre gonna be there , plus that 8-15 record coming in is no fluke either theyre pitching has been getting hammered. The Rays have a better chance to make it. Not sure about Texas havent seen much of them this year. Twins have a nice club , with a little luck anyone can make it in the AL theyre all pretty good teams.

    Hoover tomorrow and Schneider sunday

    Hanson vs Worley tomorrow

How far will the braves disgrace themselves?
    How bad can they get?

Outside of the Phillies and San Fran, the NL is just plain bad. Cincy couldn’t give away the Central. No one wanted it. San Diego reminds me of the Braves, only more anemic. How the team with the best record in the NL in late August misses the playoffs all together is just pathetic.

    The Braves stink.

Ill be shocked if Yankees make the WS

CC may have done well against us last year, but anyone remember how he got pwned back in good ol’ 2008?

Ah, so that’s why we haven’t seen Hoover tonight.

That was choochs last AB as a Catcher this year
Maybe will be a PH in the next 2

@Jay: They could always just disqualify the Central on general principle. Skip straight to the NLCS.

Theres a way we may yet face the padres LOL

Reds losing to the Brewers even

    @kate
That chooch is done catching reg season is hypothetical
but id say its a good bet

    BUT

    If SD wins tongiht.
The old man will believe that integrity wise he needs to try to win tomorrow. So may see more of the starters depending on how that game goes.

    Andrew I definitely understand.

Braves announcer soooo frustrated that Ruiz has killed them this year.
” Maybe Brian Schneiders dad will call up Charlie and ask him to play his son”

Zigurski can’t possibly do too much damage tonight. It’s nearly impossible.

    BTW
I agree 100% with the old man. The game and its integrity is bigger than anything else.

If Pads take two and Braves continue to embarrass themselves, there could be two seperate “play in” games. First to get the winner of the west on Monday, and then to get the wild card on Tuesday.

  • Chooch-watch: .302. Interesting to note: Phillies haven’t had a regular hit .300 or better since 2007: Utley (.332) and Rowand (.309).

I agree with Cholly too, but to a point, no injuries!!!

I can’t believe there are actually people doing that chop with the Braves down 11-2.

That chop wasn’t pathetic back when it was tied.

    It’s pathetic now.

  • Posts: 0 Andrew from waldorf

@andrew — remember I teased you the other day about being drunk when you mentioned leaving Jimmy off the playoff roster ? Even if he couldn’t play SS , no team in either league could have a more clutch hitter come off the bench in a big spot. I’ll take Jimmy up there any time in a big spot.—— I can only assume you were kidding about leaving him off the roster. I didn’t here anyone , anywhere , suggest that.

To be fair, Mike, that grand slam was Rollins’ only hit of the evening.

Reminds me of mocking with the chop while leaving Citizens Bank Park back on the 21st.

Mike I was jsut saying and hows this sound?

Jimmy vs lefties and Valdez vs righties,

But if jimmy is hitting and can run. He is in there and its huge.
